Group Action Planning To Promote Well-Being Of Non-Traditional Students In A Hybrid Program, Elena W. Espiritu Jan 2022

Group Action Planning To Promote Well-Being Of Non-Traditional Students In A Hybrid Program, Elena W. Espiritu

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Non-traditional occupational therapy students experience stress and occupational imbalance during their educational experience due to academic and non-academic factors, which decreases their well-being. Throughout the occupational therapy literature, participation in a variety of occupations is known to positively impact well-being. However, there are limited interventions available to foster occupational therapy students’ overall well-being through occupational engagement. Furthermore, there is a scarcity of interventions specifically designed to meet the unique needs of non-traditional occupational therapy students. Action planning is a structured goal setting format by which a person develops specific strategies to achieve desirable outcomes. This qualitative descriptive study described the …

Service-Learning And Case-Based Learning’S Impact On Student’S Clinical Reasoning: A Repeated Measures Design Study, Gordon B. Tsubira, Traci Garrison, Sapna Chakraborty, Shana Cerny

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Clinical reasoning is crucial for the occupational therapy profession to thrive in an ever-changing healthcare environment but is seldom isolated for explicit instruction and outcome measurement in educational course curricula. A single-factor repeated measures design study was conducted to compare the impact of didactic case-based learning and experiential service-learning on the development of the clinical reasoning of students at a midwestern public university’s entry-level Master of Occupational Therapy program. The participants were sixteen graduate occupational therapy students who had completed their foundation-level courses. Participants explored modes of clinical reasoning in occupational therapy for eight weeks (the first half of the …

Landscape Architecture Theses

My study is to answer the question how can landscapes themselves be interactive, could they be learning & teaching experiences? Can you learn actively from design? Could a landscape teach you a story of a people or a lesson? Are their existing sites that do these things already that we can learn from them? Could it be replicated? What are their structures and programing that make them successful? My study is also promoting and proposing an environment for learning objectives for young developing children in low income housing, with project elements such as natural playground setting, pushing a narrative of …

Drifting Intersections: A Campus For Inciting Collaboration, Bennett Rindy Jan 2022

Drifting Intersections: A Campus For Inciting Collaboration, Bennett Rindy

Landscape Architecture Theses

Collaboration among design professionals is a crucial component of a comprehensive design solution. The proximity of minds, each providing expertise and experiences unlike the others, produces an environment ripe for ideation. In traditional university settings intradisciplinary education has become more common. This educational method develops praiseworthy but brief projects. However, it lacks the built environment to sustain long term collaborative design relationships between students, graduates, and practitioners. Frequently, the design and other allied disciplines reside in separate buildings on campus. Leading to the question, do the proximity of these buildings between synergistic design fields improve collaboration levels? Qualitative research methods …

Artificial Intelligence-Empowered Structural Health Monitoring, Damage Diagnosis, And Prognosis Of Metallic Structures, Zi Zhang Jan 2022

Artificial Intelligence-Empowered Structural Health Monitoring, Damage Diagnosis, And Prognosis Of Metallic Structures, Zi Zhang

Civil and Environmental Engineering

etallic structures are the key backbone of the society and economy, which are often subjected to different types of loadings resulting cracking, corrosion, and other material discontinuity, and affecting structural integrity and safety. Therefore, ultrasonic guided wave (UGW) has been widely used for structural health monitoring (SHM) to gain a deep understanding of structural performance, assess the current state of structural conditions, and avoid potential catastrophic events. Despite advances in technologies and methods in data process, microdamage detection still posts great challenges in their detectability. Different from conventional physics-based methods, artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) has recently fueled profound …

Multiscale Modeling Of Conjugated Polymers Towards Predicting Their Multifunctional Behaviors, Amirhadi Alesadi Jan 2022

Multiscale Modeling Of Conjugated Polymers Towards Predicting Their Multifunctional Behaviors, Amirhadi Alesadi

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Easy processability, tunable mechanical and optoelectronic properties, and the endless possibilities of molecular modifications enable conjugated polymers (CPs) to be used in a wide range of lightweight, low-cost, and flexible organic electronic devices. However, despite the tremendous efforts in molecular engineering and improved electronic properties, the thermomechanical-structure-property relationship of these semiconducting materials is still less investigated. Predicting the thermal, mechanical, and photovoltaics (PV) properties of CPs is challenging due to heterogeneous chain architectures and diverse chemical building blocks. To address this critical issue, this dissertation aims to employ novel multiscale modeling and data-driven approaches to characterize the thermomechanical and optoelectronic …

Anonymity, Social Identification, And Online Social Influence, Mir Md Fazla Rabby Jan 2022

Anonymity, Social Identification, And Online Social Influence, Mir Md Fazla Rabby

Communication

This experiment investigated the primacy of social identification in the online social influence process with anonymity as a contextual variable. Other key variables were perceived argument strength and attitude toward abortion. Participants (N = 229) were randomly exposed to four conditions, in which they read three pro-life or pro-choice arguments from either three identifiable people (known) or three unidentifiable people (unknown). Based on the social identity model of deindividuation (SIDE), the study tested if social identification had a greater effect on attitude in unknown conditions through depersonalization. Results demonstrated that social identification predicted attitude, but anonymity did not affect the …

Voting Technology, Democracy, And Propaganda: Ontological Considerations For The 2020 Presidential Election, Erik Gustafson

Communication

The 2020 United States Presidential election was considered one of the most tumultuous political contests in the 21st century. During an international pandemic, travel restrictions and social distancing requirements created uncertainty about whether to vote in person or via absentee-mail-in ballot. The present study sought to investigate how voters experience different technologies in the 2020 United States Presidential election. Selected concepts in media ecology supplemented Fox and Alldred’s (2013) framework for new materialist inquiry to explore the technical material characteristics of voting technology and the discursive elements of voter fraud propaganda. By tracing the history of voting technologies and voter …

Activism Challenges Faced By Black Student-Athletes At Predominantly White Institutions, Alexis Pitchford Jan 2022

Activism Challenges Faced By Black Student-Athletes At Predominantly White Institutions, Alexis Pitchford

Communication

For decades, black athletes have used sports as a stage to spread awareness of the injustices that are overlooked in our country. Black student-athletes are treated as ambassadors of the predominantly white universities they represent in their sports. However, they still endure prejudice from students, faculty, and local community members who are supposed to be their supporters. In this study, I investigated the factors influencing black student-athletes’ willingness to speak out on social issues. Through interviews with ten black student-athletes at NDSU, I found the concerning factors, identity issues, and levels of comfortability that black student athletes experience at this …

“You Are An Experience!”: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Transgender And Gender Nonconforming Characters In Children's Animated Series, Olivia Vogt

Communication

Western society has slowly evolved to accept the identities of LGBTQ+ people. With strides forward in laws and public opinion, queer people are overall more accepted now than they have been in previous decades. However, there remains a social resistance to accepting transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people. While queer sexualities are more widely embraced, queer genders are not. Public debate surrounding the rights of TGNC people provide evidence to the prejudice, as cisgender people discuss whether transgender people should be allowed to participate in sports or hold any position of recognition in the social sphere. This discrimination can be …

Sentiment Analysis Of Covid-19 Vaccination Impact On Twitter Tweets Using Nlp Supervised Learning And Rnn Classification Comparison, Tanvir Ahmed

Computer Science

Twitter provides a platform for exchanging information and opinions on global concerns like the COVID-19 epidemic. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we used a collection of around 16,180 tweets to derive inferences regarding public views toward the vaccine impact once immunizations became widely available to the community. We use natural language processing and sentiment analysis techniques to uncover information regarding the public's perception of the COVID-19 vaccine. Our findings demonstrate that people are more pleased about taking COVID-19 shots than they are about some of the vaccines' side effects. We also look at people's reactions to COVID-19 safety measures after they …

Political Activism Through Music For Piano: A Performer’S Guide To Interpreting The Ideology In Frederic Rzewski’S (1938-2021) North American Ballads (1979) And Cornelius Cardew’S (1936-1981) Thälmann Variations (1974), Michael Jorge Langer

Music

Political music is an emerging and relevant phenomenon. These works can pose challenges to performers in terms of understanding and interpreting their nuanced historical and political ideology. This dissertation is about the philosophical intersection of politics and works for solo piano. The primary works I examine are Thälmann Variations (1974) by English composer Cornelius Cardew (1936-1981) and North American Ballads (1979) by American composer Frederic Rzewski (1938-2021). I investigate the political ideology of each composer and connect it to their works. I explore the theoretical and philosophical implications of these works and offer my interpretive and programmatic recommendations to the …

Cornets, Creativity, And Celebration: The Life And Works Of Virtuoso Cornetist Alessandro Liberati (1847-1927), Byron Ward Jan 2022

Cornets, Creativity, And Celebration: The Life And Works Of Virtuoso Cornetist Alessandro Liberati (1847-1927), Byron Ward

Music

Alessandro Liberati (1847–1927) lived during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when music for solo cornet was one of the most popular musical outlets in America. He and many performers of this instrument were virtuosos and traveled the world performing beautiful melodies and stylistic acrobatics on the instrument. They were the stars of their day and were often also conductors who led their own bands. Scholarly literature has only been written about a select few of these cornet soloists and band leaders. Names like Herbert L. Clarke (1867–1945), Jean Baptiste Arban (1825–1889), and John Phillip Sousa (1854–1932), are far …

From Paintings To Opera: Discovering The Reimagination Of William Hogarth's A Rake's Progress In Igor Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, Hong Liang Ng

Music

The Rake’s Progress (1951) is a well-known satirical opera in three acts with an epilogue by Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), with a libretto written by Wystan Hugh Auden (1907-1973) and Chester Kallman (1921-1975). This opera is based on William Hogarth’s (1697-1764) series of eight paintings, A Rake’s Progress (1734), which inspired Stravinsky during his visit to the Art Institute of Chicago on May 2, 1947. Even though many scholars have conducted discussions on the opera itself, there is little scholarship on the influence of Hogarth’s paintings on Stravinsky’s opera. This dissertation considers how Stravinsky, Auden, and Kallman translated Hogarth’s series of …

Establishing And Characterizing Patient-Derived Breast Cancer Cell Lines, Farid Solaymani Mohammadi Jan 2022

Establishing And Characterizing Patient-Derived Breast Cancer Cell Lines, Farid Solaymani Mohammadi

Biological Sciences

Commercial cancer cell lines have long been extensively used as an important platform to study cancer. They have contributed to a plethora of discoveries in the field of cancer research. However, there are limitations with using these cell lines, such as induced mutations over the long-term in vitro culture. These mutations cause incorrect exhibition of the in vivo characteristics of the cancer cells. Here, we focused on establishing Patient-derived breast cancer cell lines and attempted to characterize them in terms of several biomarkers that are shown to be overexpressed in breast cancer cells. Patient-derived breast cancer cell lines are more …

Architecture Theses

Tourism has the unique opportunity to support and create a thriving community in locations across the world that would otherwise be small and sleepy. But what are the impacts of tourism on the local communities of those towns; there are the obvious financial benefits to tourism but how does the fluctuation of tourist throughout the year impact the social and cultural health of the local community. When focusing on catering to a transient community, what becomes of a town’s identity? A town has much more to its story then the expensive boutiques and tourist destinations; there is the story and …

Framing And Contesting Unauthorized Work, Angela D. Morrison Jan 2022

Framing And Contesting Unauthorized Work, Angela D. Morrison

Faculty Scholarship

Unauthorized workers face precarity in the workplace and the threat of forced expulsion from their communities. Some of the reasons for that precarity result from how the law frames unauthorized workers. The law views unauthorized workers as lacking full human or civil rights, as “unauthorized,” to the exclusion of their other identities. The legal system also creates a binary that views unauthorized workers as either criminals who are complicit in their exploitation or passive victims for employers to exploit. This Article draws on social movement literature to theorize the processes that result in this framing and to explore how immigrant …

Green-Line: Nature In An Urban Setting, Hunter Chaput Jan 2022

Green-Line: Nature In An Urban Setting, Hunter Chaput

Architecture Theses

Many cities lack one of the most beautiful and important aspects of life, nature. When people think of cities they think of traffic and concrete and congestion. It can be a big turn off to people who are used to trees and grass and the empty sounds of nature. With the ever-expanding construction of cities nature gets pushed farther and farther out. Grass turns into concrete, trees get chopped down and in their place businesses are built. Thus, the question arises: how can architecture help bring nature back into the city? For the past century cities have been designed around …
