The Synesthesia Suite: The Color Pieces Of Andy Akiho, Jessica Marie Williams
The Synesthesia Suite: The Color Pieces Of Andy Akiho, Jessica Marie Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this dissertation is to discuss the contributions to steel pan literature by Andy Akiho, a biographical sketch of him, and to create a performance practice of his Synesthesia Suite. Information regarding the other types of steel pans—double seconds, double tenors, cellos/cello guitars, and basses—will be addressed briefly, such as the ease or difficulty performing the Synesthesia Suite on these instruments. Nonetheless, the C-lead tenor pan will be the primary instrument discussed in this document. This dissertation will also examine the experiences that Andy Akiho has with his form of synesthesia and how it has influenced his compositional …
Race And Media In The Deep South: Factors Related To Covid-19 Vaccination, Melissa Arismendy
Race And Media In The Deep South: Factors Related To Covid-19 Vaccination, Melissa Arismendy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
There is an overwhelming amount of mistrust and hesitancy toward the COVID-19 vaccine. Research has established that the main reasons for COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy are low confidence in vaccines, medical mistrust, and various other demographic factors. A less understood yet critically important factor that uniquely affects vaccination efforts is conflicting messages from mainstream social media and misinformation. This research aimed to investigate this emerging phenomenon of media influence in Mississippi, which ranks second in the nation with the lowest vaccination rates and number one in COVID-19 related deaths. This study draws on secondary data consisting of mail-in surveys of randomly …

Abstract Examining adult learners' perceptions of effective teaching in career and technical education is needed to enhance the principal objective of refining learning value is determining acceptable teaching practices for the student (Davies & Wilson, 2020). In addition, this subject is worth investigating to highlight the social inequalities that plague nontraditional learners' lives within the educational system (Clycq et al., 2014). Finally, to show the need for a support system inside the classroom and out (Chao & Good, 2004). Duncan-Andrade (2009) introduces the concept of Critical Hope. Critical Hope comprises three elements that can stand independently or collectively: material, Socratic, …
Legacies Of The Death Penalty: Sacrifice, Survival, And The Possibility Of Justice, Sarah Kathryn Marshall
Legacies Of The Death Penalty: Sacrifice, Survival, And The Possibility Of Justice, Sarah Kathryn Marshall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Concluding the first year of his seminars on the death penalty, Derrida writes that “even when it will have been abolished, the death penalty will survive.” This dissertation interprets his claim in various contexts and with particular attention to the specificity of Derrida’s discourse on survival or survivance. The first chapter attends to the complicity of the Western philosophical tradition, through the example of Martin Heidegger, in providing the theoretical scaffold for the institution of capital punishment. This chapter also traces a logic of donner la mort, or giving death, from the philosophical level to the social level, working out …
A Qualitative Study Of Critical Consciousness: How Black Leaders Perceive Their Roles In The Sociopolitical Development Of Their Students, Ray Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Paulo Freire (1970) Pedagogy of the Oppressed explained how his theory of critical consciousness could liberate the low-income Brazilian workers. Freire's theory was that his people should be able to see their culture in their education and be equipped with the tools to analyze the world around them and find their sources of oppression. This research study uses Roderick J. Watts’ theory of Sociopolitical Development (SPD) is a branch of Freire's critical consciousness theory. This research study examines the critical consciousness of ten (10) Black urban school leaders by utilizing a semi-structured interview process to explore their educational and life …
No To Language-Based Discrimination: The Effect Of Multimedia, Perspective Taking, And Itas’ Exposure On Native Speakers’ Attitude Toward L1-Accented Speakers, Shima Farhesh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Linguistic stereotyping research posits that native speaker favor standard variety speakers which results in discrimination against non-native speakers (Rubin 2002, Kang & Rubin, 2009). However, it may be possible to improve native speaker attitudes towards accented speech, and through that, accented speakers. Research on improving native speakers’ (NSs) attitudes toward non-native speakers (NNSs) suggests that direct exposure through interpersonal contact (Kang et al., 2015) and indirect exposure may both decrease prejudice towards marginalized groups (Rani & Samuel, 2019). Little is known, however, about the relative effectiveness of different interventions such as video interventions (Multimedia group), intergroup contact through International Teaching …
Financial Exchange Industrial Organization, Sports Championships And Stock Market Reaction, Beauty Premiums, And Machine Learning, David Adan Taylor
Financial Exchange Industrial Organization, Sports Championships And Stock Market Reaction, Beauty Premiums, And Machine Learning, David Adan Taylor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
First, I examine how the forces of automation, competition, and demutualization are rapidly changing the industrial organization, ownership, and capital structure of the financial exchange industry. I propose the conditions under which demutualization becomes optimal from the perspective of mutually owned exchange owners. I then proceed to build an empirical dataset characterizing the evolution of the leading stock and derivative exchanges around the World along these dimensions. I empirically find that technology driven growth opportunities, product driven growth opportunities and increases in market concentration are the main stimulants for demutualization. In this paper I examine market reaction at the firm-level …
The Relationship Of Cognitive Load And Motivation As A Predictor Of Persistence In Accelerated Online Asynchronous Courses, Alan Wesley Kinsey
The Relationship Of Cognitive Load And Motivation As A Predictor Of Persistence In Accelerated Online Asynchronous Courses, Alan Wesley Kinsey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
With the increase in online course enrollments each year, there is a continued examination of online course persistence, particularly in accelerated online courses. This examination of online course persistence has typically examined individual learner factors as contributors to persistence. However, research examining the institutional and pedagogical factors of persistence can continue to further understanding what factors lead to learner persistence decisions. The purpose of this quantitative, predictive correlational study is to examine to what extent, if any, community college learners’ perceived online course cognitive load and motivation predict persistence in an accelerated online course. The theoretical framework for this study …

The purpose of this study was to describe the lived experiences of Black women’s mental health and methods of spiritual healing from intersecting oppressions. The research questions that guided this study were centered on identifying how Black women understand and narrate their experiences of mental health, the role of misrepresentations on Black women’s mental health, and the methods of …
Magnetocaloric Effect In Oxide Materials, Dipesh Neupane
Magnetocaloric Effect In Oxide Materials, Dipesh Neupane
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is the heating or cooling of a magnetic material due to the application of a magnetic field. Magnetic refrigeration (MR) based on the MCE is a promising alternative to conventional gas compression-based cooling techniques. Because of the increased interest in these materials over the last two decades, less expensive materials, such as garnet and perovskite oxides, have been investigated as possible MC materials by altering their microstructure. In this view, the motivation for this work is to explore the effect of impurity atoms in these oxides from the technological and scientific point of view and highlight …

Canyon Or Crevasse? The Gender Pay Gap In Nursing, Stanley Carlton Wilkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Despite good progress toward gender equality in recent decades, women continue to lag significantly behind men in wages and compensation at workplaces. This study examines the gender pay gap in the nursing profession – one traditionally female dominated field. By analyzing the 2019 American Community Survey (ACS) data, I conduct cross-tabulation and multivariate linear regression analyses to test two core hypotheses: (1) men are more likely to work in the nursing fields with higher pay; and (2) male nurses tend to have higher wages than female nurses. I find that female nurses predominate in the fields with lower pay, such …

Enhanced Dopamine Autoreceptor Functioning During Blockade Of Dopamine Transporters, Rachel Pace
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Dopamine autoreceptors (DARs) and dopamine transporters (DATs) influence dopamine transmission in the brain's mesolimbic pathway. Prior studies have focused on how activation of DARs influences trafficking of DATs, but how DATs influence DARs remains unclear. Male and female C57BL/6J mice received daily injections of either cocaine (DAT blocker) or saline for seven days then underwent stereotaxic surgery to obtain fixed potential amperometric recordings of DAR-mediated dopamine release. All mice received a mid-surgery injection of cocaine, and DAR-mediated dopamine release was assessed once more during maximal DAT blockade. The current study found that DAR functionality was increased during peak cocaine effects, …

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is one of the global health issues causing high mortality. Hence, timely and agile detection of such arrests and immediate defibrillation support to the victim is of the utmost importance. An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a medical device that provides defibrillation support to patients suffering from SCA. AED is typically used to restore a normal heart rhythm during cardiac arrest. AED implements the machine learning (ML) or deep learning (DL)-based approach to detect whether the patient needs an electric shock or not and then automates the electric shock to the SCA victims through the chest …

The Article provides background on the contexts in which tax opinions are issued and considerations that are relevant to the composition of such opinions; defines and distinguishes among the levels of assurance at which tax opinions are typically provided; and presents an overview of ethical rules and related considerations, including Circular 230 and the Code's preparer penalty provisions, implicated in the process of drafting and issuing tax opinions. …
When Exemptions Discriminate: Unlawfully Narrow Religious Exemptions To Vaccination Mandates By Private Colleges And Universities, Ronald J. Colombo
When Exemptions Discriminate: Unlawfully Narrow Religious Exemptions To Vaccination Mandates By Private Colleges And Universities, Ronald J. Colombo
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Numerous colleges and universities have imposed COVID-19 vaccination mandates upon their students. Most of these mandates also include language purporting to recognize medical and religious exemptions. With regard to religious exemptions, some are unjustly discriminatory. Most notably, some give preference to students who are members of organized religions over students who are not. And even facially neutral exemptions can be administered in an unjustly discriminatory way by, for example, giving preference to one set of religious denominations over another, or by engaging in “religious profiling” (whereby students of a particular denomination are held completely beholden to the beliefs of that …

Can You Be A Legal Ethics Scholar And Have Guts?, Cynthia Godsoe, Abbe Smith, Ellen Yaroshefsky
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Recent efforts to hold lawyers accountable for their actions-including lawyers who sought to overturn the 2020 Presidential election based on false evidence, and New York City prosecutors who have committed serious misconduct-failed to draw a significant number of legal ethics scholars. The authors of this Essay are troubled by this. We understand why practicing lawyers might be reluctant to join such an effort; calling out other lawyers inpositions of power can be had for clients. But it is less understandable when it comes to law professors who, except for those who teach in law clinics or otherwise engage in law practice, …

Expanding The Federal Work Product Doctrine To Unrepresented Litigants, Jennifer A. Gundlach, Zeus Smith
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Clerk' offices in federal courthouses across the country designate individuals who do not have counsel as "pro se," a term that comes from the Latin inpropria persona meaning 'for oneself " The term is ambiguous as to the reasons why individuals appear without counsel. While some may purposefully choose not to hire a lawyer, for many it is not a choice.
Access to justice in federal courts requires not just entry into the courts for all litigants, but also fair treatment during the course of litigation. Unfortunately, all unrepresented individuals face disadvantages in federal courts. They are, for the most …
Considering The Consequences Of An Unchecked Presidential Recognition Power For U.S. Taiwan Policy, Julian G. Ku
Considering The Consequences Of An Unchecked Presidential Recognition Power For U.S. Taiwan Policy, Julian G. Ku
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
This Article will begin by discussing the not entirely but still surprising rise of an unchecked presidential recognition power. As the Zivotofsky dissents noted, the Court had to reject various historical precedents supporting a meaningful role for Congress in the determination of state recognition. Such a role for Congress was wholly rejected in Zivotofsky.
The Article will then review the implications of this unchecked presidential power. It argues that it is possible, even likely, that this power will be used in a way that does not attempt to conform with international law and contradicts prior U.S. policy.
The Article concludes …
The Thin Blue Line Between Virtue And Vice: Confronting The Moral Harms Of Policing, G. Alex Sinha
The Thin Blue Line Between Virtue And Vice: Confronting The Moral Harms Of Policing, G. Alex Sinha
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Scholarship on policing has exploded in recent years as bystanders increasingly record and circulate videos of police brutality, much of it directed at civilians of color. These incidents have invited significant attention on the culture of police departments and police unions, generating widespread calls for the reform or even the abolition of police forces. The traditional considerations at the center of these debates include the practical challenges to enacting reforms, the expected efficacy of proposed changes for curtailing abuses, and the possible costs of these changes (whether measured in dollars or crime rates). The moral premises that are inherently embedded …

Integral Citizenship, Cassandra Burke Robertson, Irina D. Manta
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Does the Constitution’s promise of birthright citizenship to all born “in the United States” cover the United States Territories? Residents of the Territories have regularly sought judicial recognition of their equal birthright citizenship under the Fourteenth Amendment, most recently in some prominent cases reaching federal appellate courts. When rejecting these claims, the courts have been unable or unwilling to articulate a unified theory of citizenship. Most problematically, judicial decisions have continued relying on the Insular Cases, whose reasoning over a century ago was explicitly based on a policy of racial exclusion.
We argue that the time has come for unambiguous …

The current study examines the nature of actions that U.S. college women (N = 267) engage in to promote, protect, or enhance the welfare of other women. The study had two goals: 1) to distinguish between traditional forms of action (traditional collective action) and more informal, interpersonal, forms of action (small acts) among college women; and 2) to test whether the classic antecedents of collective action (gender identity, feminist identity, women’s activist identity, efficacy, appraisals of gender inequality, and injustice standards) are differentially predictive of these two types of participation. A confirmatory factor analysis provided strong support for these two …

Many academic libraries have historically limited textbook purchases. Given recent calls to support expanded online education programs and textbook affordability initiatives, however, many academic libraries have changed course to invest considerable amounts of money to license electronic books (e-books) that are assigned in courses. This study explores the value of these materials by leveraging commonly used evaluative methods, such as benefit-cost ratio and usage statistics, as well as novel criteria, including a quality analysis using Resources for College Libraries (RCL) and an analysis of the persistence of assigned titles across semesters. The findings suggest that assigned e-books are a wise …

Lifting Labor’S Voice: A Principled Path Toward Greater Worker Voice And Power Within American Corporate Governance, Leo E. Strine Jr., Aneil Kovvali, Oluwatomi O. Williams
Ira M. Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership
The dramatic decline in corporate gainsharing with American workers over the last two generations has contributed to stagnating wages, soaring inequality, and economic insecurity. There are global causes of greater inequality and depressed pay that go beyond the decline in workers’ share. But many public policymakers and economists believe that the reduced share of corporate prof its that American workers receive has been a major factor in the much larger increase in inequality that has occurred in the United States, compared to its market economy allies in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). To some, the explanation for …

Water quality monitoring in coastal areas is challenging due to cost and time constraints. Identifying and selecting sampling sites accurately and effectively is crucial for efficient monitoring. The need for efficient monitoring of marine waters has led to exploring the use of remote sensing as one helpful alternative. Remote sensing is practical in several applications based on pattern recognition and information processing of large terrestrial and aquatic surface areas. Collected information is processed with various image processing techniques to identify objects such as microorganisms. Fecal coliforms are microorganisms that are indicators of sanitary quality and are present in human and …

Background: Sex differences in incidence and/or presentation of schizophrenia (SCZ), major depressive disorder (MDD), and bipolar disorder (BIP) are pervasive. Previous evidence for shared genetic risk and sex differences in brain abnormalities across disorders suggest possible shared sex-dependent genetic risk. Methods: We conducted the largest to date genome-wide genotype-by-sex (G×S) interaction of risk for these disorders using 85,735 cases (33,403 SCZ, 19,924 BIP, and 32,408 MDD) and 109,946 controls from the PGC (Psychiatric Genomics Consortium) and iPSYCH. Results: Across disorders, genome-wide significant single nucleotide polymorphism–by-sex interaction was detected for a locus encompassing NKAIN2 (rs117780815, p = 3.2 × 10−8 …
