A Domain-Knowledge Modeling Of Hospital-Acquired Infection Risk In Healthcare Personnel From Retrospective Observational Data: A Case Study For Covid-19, Phat Huynh Jan 2022

A Domain-Knowledge Modeling Of Hospital-Acquired Infection Risk In Healthcare Personnel From Retrospective Observational Data: A Case Study For Covid-19, Phat Huynh

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Healthcare personnel (HCP) is facing a consistent risk of viral infections. We proposed a domain-knowledge-driven infection risk model to quantify the individual HCP and the population-level risks. For individual-level risk estimation, a time-variant model was proposed to capture the disease transmission dynamics. At the population-level, the infection risk was estimated using a Bayesian network model constructed from three feature sets. For model validation, we investigated the case study of the Coronavirus disease. The variance-based sensitivity analysis indicated that the uncertainty in the estimated risk was attributed to two variables: the number of close contacts and the viral transmission probability. We …

Multiracial Identity As A Factor In Body Image And Disordered Eating, Kerrie Leonard Jan 2022

Multiracial Identity As A Factor In Body Image And Disordered Eating, Kerrie Leonard

Human Development and Family Science

Emerging adulthood is a significant developmental stage where both ethnic-racial identitydevelopment and body dissatisfaction/disordered eating are salient. Past research suggests that there are links between identity development and body image/disordered eating (Palmeroni et al., 2020). Additionally, studies in the body image/disordered eating field have begun to examine differences among ethnic-racial groups (see Bucchianeri et al., 2016). However, there is limited research with Multiracial individuals (i.e., individuals with two or more ethnic-racial backgrounds). It is undetermined how Multiracial identity development influences body image and disordered eating behaviors. Thus, two studies were conducted to explore such connections. Participants included 174 Multiracial emerging …

Global In Time Self-Interacting Dirac Fields In The De Sitter Space, Karen Yagdjian Jan 2022

Global In Time Self-Interacting Dirac Fields In The De Sitter Space, Karen Yagdjian

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper the semilinear equation of the spin-12 fields in the de Sitter space is investigated. We prove the existence of the global in time small data solution in the expanding de Sitter universe. Then, under the Lochak–Majorana condition, we prove the existence of the global in time solution with large data. The sufficient conditions for the solutions to blow up in finite time are given for large data in the expanding and contracting de Sitter spacetimes. The influence of the Hubble constant on the lifespan is estimated.

An Antimicrobial Polydopamine Surface Coating To Reduce Biofouling On Telemetry Tags Used In Marine Conservation Practices, Ariana Smies Jan 2022

An Antimicrobial Polydopamine Surface Coating To Reduce Biofouling On Telemetry Tags Used In Marine Conservation Practices, Ariana Smies

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Satellite telemetry tags are used to track the migration patterns of large cetaceans. These tags penetrate the dermis and remain embedded in the underlying blubber tissue. As the dermis of cetaceans is host to a diverse microbiome, and it is impossible to clean the skin before implanting the devices, the potential for infection is increased when the tags penetrate through the skin. H2O2 is a potential antimicrobial agent that, in addition to showing broad-spectrum efficacy against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, can promote wound healing outcomes by promoting proliferative factors and peptides that protect against oxidative stress. However, …

A Professional Development Plan For Educators Working With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Transitioning Into Standard Childcare Settings, Jennifer Lee Reiser Jan 2022

A Professional Development Plan For Educators Working With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Transitioning Into Standard Childcare Settings, Jennifer Lee Reiser

Human Development and Family Science

Standard childcare centers are continuing to become more inclusive to individuals of all abilities. Transition plans from specialized services such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) often include discharge criteria and a discharge transition plan for the child, but often do not include any training or development plan for educators in a standard childcare setting. Due to the limited number of plans available, transition plans vary greatly in how comprehensive they are as every organization creates their own plan or transitions children into the childcare setting without an identified plan. This paper proposes a professional development plan for educators working with …

The Effects Of Greater Dietary Protein Spread And Quality On Muscle Health In Healthy Adults, Nathaniel Johnson Jan 2022

The Effects Of Greater Dietary Protein Spread And Quality On Muscle Health In Healthy Adults, Nathaniel Johnson

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

Skeletal muscle is critically important, but is often overlooked, not getting the respect or attention the tissue demands. Muscle is responsible for locomotion and physical performance, uses large amount of energy preventing gains in fat mass, and acts as an amino acid reservoir during trauma. Nonetheless, as individuals age, they lose muscle and to a greater extent strength. Maintaining muscle mass and strength is paramount for preventing disability and mortality. There are many aspects of diet that affect muscle tissue, but dietary protein directly activates muscle protein synthesis, so is important to consider as part of a balanced diet. Research …

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) are expected to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on athletes experiencing cardiac arrest regardless of the protective equipment worn by the athlete. Additionally, ventilation devices used by ATCs aid in the delivery of ventilations during CPR. The goal of this research was to determine which ventilation device allowed ATCs to deliver adequate ventilations and to establish recommendations for helmet removal method in hockey players requiring CPR. Twenty ATCs completed four scenarios of CPR according to the 2020 AHA guidelines using a PocketMask (PM) or FaceShield (FS) to deliver ventilations and accessing the airway by removing only the …

Systematic Intervention Component Analysis: Dose-Response For Therapeutic Ultrasound, Stephanie Hamersky Jan 2022

Systematic Intervention Component Analysis: Dose-Response For Therapeutic Ultrasound, Stephanie Hamersky

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

Therapeutic ultrasound has been well documented in the literature to affect human tissue. The four main parameters practitioners are able to influence are frequency, duty cycle, intensity, and treatment time. Alteration to one or more of these parameters will affect the total dose of acoustical energy delivered to the tissue resulting in a target tissue temperature increase or biophysical effect. The goal of this two-part study was to determine the appropriate energy dose of therapeutic ultrasounds needed to create a beneficial intervention when treating unhealthy human tissue. Prior to the investigation a non-systematic review was conducted to determine the dose-response …

Led Astray: How Command Influence Contributed To The Atrocities Of The Us-Dakota War Of 1862-1865, Jacob Morris Jan 2022

Led Astray: How Command Influence Contributed To The Atrocities Of The Us-Dakota War Of 1862-1865, Jacob Morris

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

During the US-Dakota War of 1862-1865, fighting and bloodshed targeted unarmed non-combatants on both sides. American memory has often fixated only on actions committed by Dakota peoples, Oceti Sakowin, that were deemed depraved. However, sane and level-headed US soldiers also killed and mutilated wounded warriors, as well as fired on women and children. The key elements that made disciplined American soldiers in the US-Dakota War commit atrocities against fallen enemies and noncombatants were the illegal and immoral actions passively permitted, acquiesced through slight penalties, and outright ordered by ranking army commanders prior to and during the campaigns. Commanders were able …

Let All Voices Be Heard: Creating An Engaging And Inclusive Asynchronous Qr Classroom, Ruby Daniels, Kathryn Appenzeller Knowles

Marketing Faculty Publications (Archived)

With the shift to remote teaching, many instructors used Zoom for synchronous work. However, this presented issues (fatigue, turning cameras off, inequitable technical hurdles) that motivated quantitative reasoning (QR) instructors to look for asynchronous alternatives. A common technique has been text-based online discussions, which can be difficult for students to find engaging. This mixed method study (N = 41) describes an inclusive video alternative, specifically for teaching QR and quantitative fluency skills, which was piloted in two asynchronous sections and one hybrid section of the same course. Students posted their video responses, watched their classmates’ videos, and wrote short …

A Question Of Affect: A Queer Reading Of Institutional Nondiscrimination Statements At Texas Public Universities, Sarah Dwyer Jan 2022

A Question Of Affect: A Queer Reading Of Institutional Nondiscrimination Statements At Texas Public Universities, Sarah Dwyer

English Faculty Publications (Archived)

Grounded in my embodied experiences as an openly-queer faculty member at a Texas public university and drawing from Sara Ahmed’s work on affect and institutional diversity, I argue that nondiscrimination statements at Texas public universities are affective objects which serve as straightening devices on the queer bodies that they affect, even as they purport to and often do protect them. The goals of my critique are twofold: 1) to support the work of those tasked with writing revisions to these policies by offering a few practical suggestions to allow for greater enforcement of the nondiscrimination practices that these policies espouse; …

An Examination Of Land Preparation Methods To Alleviate Common Issues Associated With Pipeline Reclamation, Jarrett Lardy Jan 2022

An Examination Of Land Preparation Methods To Alleviate Common Issues Associated With Pipeline Reclamation, Jarrett Lardy

Soil Science

Post-seeding land preparation methods can improve reclamation success; however, limited research is available for the Williston Basin. A field study evaluated four treatments: land imprinting, hydromulch, straw crimping, and the combination of hydromulch and land imprinting for their abilities to reduce simulated rainfall runoff and sediment losses and for their ability to promote plant growth. Straw crimping reduced total runoff and may likely be the best option for providing surface cover. However, vegetation establishment was found to be not significant among the treatments. Additionally, a laboratory study examined seven soils for their penetration resistances (PR) across variable water contents (Θg) …

An Investigation On Residual Stress Build-Up In Cold Sprayed Metallic Samples: Effect Of Stress Relaxation Heat Treatment, Deepika Shrestha

Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics

Residual stress formation during cold spraying process may result in deteriorative effects on the performance of coating materials. The objective of this investigation is to characterize residual stress built-up in some of well-known metallic alloys deposited by cold spraying. Two different nickel based super alloys (Inconel 625 and Inconel 718) and the most commercially used titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) were considered for investigation in this study. The average residual stress was higher in Inconel samples compared to the titanium one. Stress relaxation heat treatment helped in the reduction of porosities. However, the recovery of residual stress was highest in Ti-6Al-4V compared …

Healthcare Provider Education For Recognizing And Assisting Victims Of Human Trafficking, Haley Nicole Fisher Jan 2022

Healthcare Provider Education For Recognizing And Assisting Victims Of Human Trafficking, Haley Nicole Fisher

Nursing

Human trafficking has increasing prevalence in the United States (U.S.) with an estimated 1.6 million people trafficked at any time. Healthcare systems are one of the most critical access points for identifying and recognizing victims of human trafficking. Unfortunately, a majority of healthcare providers have never received training on human trafficking. There are approximately 835 nurse practitioners (NPs) within North Dakota (ND). With increasing prevalence of human trafficking in the U.S., education for healthcare providers must be provided to aid in the fight against human trafficking. The purpose of this practice improvement project (PIP) was to increase NP perceived knowledge …

Assessment Of Health Literacy And Preferred Learning Style Of Patients In A Rural North Dakota Primary Care Clinic, Cassie Rose Holt Jan 2022

Assessment Of Health Literacy And Preferred Learning Style Of Patients In A Rural North Dakota Primary Care Clinic, Cassie Rose Holt

Nursing

Individuals with low health literacy face many difficulties within the healthcare system, including seeking medical care in inappropriate places, foregoing appointments and preventative health screenings, and misunderstanding self-care instructions. This leads to more hospitalizations, increased healthcare expenses, and use of healthcare resources. Low health literacy is especially significant in rural populations, where there are additional barriers to healthcare such as geography, distance, weather, inadequate financial resources and lower socioeconomic status, and lack of primary care and specialty providers. Furthermore, providers often do not consider patients’ preferred learning styles, which may be significant for those who have difficulty understanding instructions. Patient …

Kisspeptins: Airway Remodeling In Asthma, Niyati Borkar Jan 2022

Kisspeptins: Airway Remodeling In Asthma, Niyati Borkar

Pharmacy

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder that affects people of all ages. Sex and gender disparity in asthma is recognized and suggests a modulatory role for sex steroids, particularly estrogen. However, there is a dichotomous role of estrogen in airway remodeling, making it unclear whether sex hormones are protective or detrimental in asthma and suggesting a need to explore mechanisms upstream or independent of estrogen. Kisspeptins (Kp) are a novel peptide existing upstream of sex steroids and function as a crucial regulator of puberty. Kp via KISS1R are further implicated in the sex steroid biogenesis via action on the gonadotrophins. …
