Every year, an estimated 12.3 million tons of glass are generated in the United States. Of all glass generated, only 3.1 million tons are recycled. Despite the near endless recyclability of glass waste, recycling rates in the United States remain low. This is primarily due to the lack of color separation and presence of non-recyclable materials associated with single-stream curbside collection used in many municipalities throughout the country. These factors make recycled glass unusable for many glass bottle manufacturers, causing the majority of glass placed in a recycling bin to eventually be landfilled. The purpose of this research is to …

Background: Low birthweight (LBW) is a leading cause of neonatal mortality in the United States and a major causative factor of adverse health effects in newborns. Identifying high-risk patients early in prenatal care is crucial to preventing adverse outcomes. Previous studies have proposed various machine learning (ML) models for LBW prediction task, but they were limited by small and imbalanced data sets. Some authors attempted to address this through different data rebalancing methods. However, most of their reported performances did not reflect the models’ actual performance in real-life scenarios. To date, few studies have successfully benchmarked the performance of ML …

Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASi) and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) are important interventions to improve outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease and heart failure, but their use is limited in some patients by the development of hyperkalemia. The risk of hyperkalemia may differ between agents, with one trial showing lower risk of hyperkalemia with the novel non-steroidal MRA finerenone compared with steroidal MRA spironolactone. Novel potassium binders, including patiromer and sodium zirconium cyclosilicate, are available interventions to manage hyperkalemia and enable continuation of RAASi and MRAs in patients who could benefit from these treatments. These agents bind free potassium ions …
Multi-Physics Numerical Simulation Of Corrosion And Service Life Evaluation Of Novel Reinforced Concrete Systems, Jin Fan
Dissertations
Durability challenges of reinforced concrete materials can shorten the service life and increase the carbon footprint of civil infrastructure systems. Novel alternative materials, such as high-performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites (HPFRCCs) and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), offer an alternative to tradi-tional concrete materials by increasing the service life of infrastructure or reducing raw material consumption, thereby reducing the life-cycle carbon footprint. Due, in part, to a lack of robust numerical tools, predicting the durability response of these emerging cementitious materials has been insufficiently addressed. A time-dependent multi-physics modeling framework is proposed and adopted to investigate the chloride induced deterioration mechanisms …

Development Of Novel Hybrid Structures For Fast Dissolution Of Hydrophobic Drugs, Mohammad Saiful Islam
Dissertations
Nanomaterials have proven to be highly effective in the design and development of biomedicine. Complementary nanostructured hybrid particles show great promise in drug delivery applications. By improving functionalization, the physicochemical properties of the particles can be enhanced resulting in a high surface area, tunable hydrophilicity and porosity. These characteristics can provide a suitable environment for drug encapsulation, biocompatibility, high drug loading, and customizable release capabilities.
The formulation of drugs with poor water solubility faces multiple challenges, such as insufficient dissolution and inconsistent therapeutic efficacy, particularly when administered orally over an extended period. To overcome these challenges, some of the beneficial …

Oil Droplet Size In Subsea Oil Spills: The Experimental And Numerical Investigation, Ruixue Liu
Dissertations
Well blowout or oil leakage may occur during the offshore oil exploration activities. A great number of crude oils are released to the water environment in those accidents. Three sequent processes after the blowouts are commonly modelled: the droplet formation near the leakage or orifice, the transport of oil droplets in the water column, and the transport of oil slick with waves near the ocean surface. The oil droplet size distribution (DSD) serves as a vital role as it affects any further process, including chemical process such as biodegradation and physical process such as transport, which provides reference for assessing …

A Piezoelectric Gelatin Scaffold For Schwann Cell Induced Spinal Cord Repair, Scott Stratton
Dissertations
Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in axonal damage and consequently, functional loss for which there is no effective treatment at the present time. Axon growth across the injured site is needed to restore disruptive axonal circuitry, which is needed for recovery of lost function, but endogenous axon growth is poor. A Schwann cell (SC) transplant has shown promise in promoting axon growth in the injured spinal cord. Similarly, it has been shown that axons grow into biomaterial conduits especially when they are engineered to provide physical and biochemical growth-promoting cues. While both approaches are promising, their overall effect on axon …

Preemptive statutory language within tobacco minimum legal sales age (MLSA) laws has prohibited localities from enacting stricter laws than state statutes. With the recent uptake of state Tobacco 21 laws in the US, the current landscape of preempted MLSA laws is unknown. This study sought to update the status of preemption in MLSA laws enacted in US states between 2015–2022. A public health attorney reviewed state tobacco MLSA laws (n = 50) and state tobacco control codes, searching for language regarding preemption. When statutes were unclear, case law was reviewed by examining local ordinances that were invalidated by state court …

What happens to everyday social interactions when other-race recognition fails? Here, we provide the first formal investigation of this question. We gave East Asian international students (N = 89) a questionnaire concerning their experiences of the other-race effect (ORE) in Australia, and a laboratory test of their objective other-race face recognition deficit using the Cambridge Face Memory Test (CFMT). As a ‘perpetrator’ of the ORE, participants reported that their problems telling apart Caucasian people contributed significantly to difficulties socializing with them. Moreover, the severity of this problem correlated with their ORE on the CFMT. As a ‘victim’ of the ORE, …

Vitamin D can modulate immune responses, and its deficiency is linked to increased autoimmunity and susceptibility to infection. In the general population, it has been observed that serum vitamin D levels are connected with the risk of COVID-19 and its severity. Our study aims to examine reported findings on the effect of vitamin D serum levels on infection of COVID-19 during pregnancy. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched for relevant studies. Serum vitamin D serum levels in COVID-19-positive and COVID-19-negative pregnant women were 24.61 ± 20.86 ng/mL and 24.12 ± 17.33 ng/mL, respectively. In mild vs. …

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) fusion protein (F) is highly conserved between subtypes A and B (RSV/A and RSV/B). To become fully active, F precursor undergoes enzymatic cleavage to yield F1 and F2 subunits and releases a 27-amino-acid peptide (p27). Virus-cell fusion occurs when RSV F undergoes a conformational change from pre-F to post-F. Previous data show that p27 is detected on RSV F, but questions remain regarding if and how p27 affects the conformation of mature RSV F. Monoclonal antibodies against p27, site Ø (pre-F specific), and site II were used to monitor RSV F conformation by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay …

Homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) testing has been approved by FDA for selecting epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) patients who may benefit from the first-line poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor (PARPi) maintenance therapy. However, the effects of HRD on the clinical outcomes of first-line chemotherapy and first-line PARPi maintenance therapy have not been rigorously evaluated in Chinese EOC patients. Here, we developed an HRD assay and applied it to two large retrospectively collected Chinese EOC patient cohorts. In the first-line adjuvant chemotherapy cohort (FACT, N = 380), HRD status significantly improved PFS (median, 15.6 months vs. 9.4 months; HR, 0.688; 95% CI, 0.526-0.899; …

Graft-versus-leukemia (GvL) reactions are responsible for the effectiveness of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation as a treatment modality for myeloid neoplasia, whereby donor T- effector cells recognize leukemia neoantigens. However, a substantial fraction of patients experiences relapses because of the failure of the immunological responses to control leukemic outgrowth. Here, through a broad immunogenetic study, we demonstrate that germline and somatic reduction of human leucocyte antigen (HLA) heterogeneity enhances the risk of leukemic recurrence. We show that preexistent germline-encoded low evolutionary divergence of class II HLA genotypes constitutes an independent factor associated with disease relapse and that acquisition of clonal somatic …

INTRODUCTION: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has reduced mortality and improved life expectancy among HIV patients but does not provide a cure. Patients must remain on lifelong medications and deal with drug resistance and side effects. This underscores the need for HIV cure research. However, participation in HIV cure research has risks without guaranteed benefits. We determined what HIV healthcare providers know about HIV cure research trials, the risks involved, and what kind of cure interventions they are likely to recommend for their patients.
METHODS: We conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with 39 HIV care providers consisting of 12 physicians, 8 counsellors, 14 …

Irritability Moderates The Association Between Cognitive Flexibility Task Performance And Related Prefrontal Cortex Activation In Young Children, Yanwei Li, Adam S Grabell, Susan B Perlman
2020-Current year OA Pubs
The association between cognitive flexibility and related neural functioning has been inconsistent. This is particularly true in young children, where previous studies have found heterogenous results linking behavior and neural function, raising the possibility of unexplored moderators. The current study explored the moderating role of dimensional irritability in the association between cognitive flexibility task performance and prefrontal activation in young children. A total of 106 3- to 7-year-old children were recruited to complete a custom-designed, child-adapted, cognitive flexibility task, and 98 of them were included in the data analysis. The children's dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activation was monitored using functional near-infrared …

Resident macrophages are distributed across all tissues and are highly heterogeneous due to adaptation to different tissue-specific environments. The resident macrophages of the sensory ganglia (sensory neuron-associated macrophages, sNAMs) are in close contact with the cell body of primary sensory neurons and might play physiological and pathophysiological roles. After peripheral nerve injury, there is an increase in the population of macrophages in the sensory ganglia, which have been implicated in different conditions, including neuropathic pain development. However, it is still under debate whether macrophage accumulation in the sensory ganglia after peripheral nerve injury is due to the local proliferation of …

BACKGROUND: Single-cell RNA-seq has emerged as an innovative technology used to study complex tissues and characterize cell types, states, and lineages at a single-cell level. Classification of bulk tumors by their individual cellular constituents has also created new opportunities to generate single-cell atlases for many organs, cancers, and developmental models. Despite the tremendous promise of this technology, recent evidence studying epithelial tissues and diverse carcinomas suggests the methods used for tissue processing, cell disaggregation, and preservation can significantly bias gene expression and alter the observed cell types. To determine whether sarcomas - tumors of mesenchymal origin - are subject to …

Private 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) fifth-generation (5G), or Private 5G (P5G), networks are local networks or local area networks (LANs) that are built using 3GPP 5G wireless technology to carry traffic within a specified area, such as within an organization, on a campus, or within an industrial space. A growing number of enterprise and public sector companies are considering building their own P5G networks to address their need for clean spectrum, high bandwidth, low latency, higher availability, and increased visibility. With the introduction of P5G networks, there may be scenarios where both Wi-Fi and P5G networks are present in …

Collective Musical Cognition: Relevance, Dialogue, And Reflection In Group Learning, Leonore Pogonowski, Cindy Bell, Nathalie Robinson
Visions of Research in Music Education
The purpose of this article is to introduce collective musical cognition as a mode for developing diagnostic critical thinking in music at all levels of the educa-tional continuum–kindergarten through graduate school. It defines and illustrates how collective musical cognition is influenced by relevance, dialogue, and reflection as social and educational practices in the classroom. Relevance, dialogue, and reflection - the three components of collective musi-cal cognition–are critical social practices that transform music education pedagogy, whether practiced in the orchestral rehearsal room, the general music classroom, or the choral and band rehearsal rooms. The prevailing idea is student engagement: student engagement …

Visions of Research in Music Education
The Creative Arts Laboratory (CAL) was the embodiment of Lee Pogonowski’s teaching philosophy and an outgrowth of her work with the Manhattanville Music Curriculum Project (MMCP). Through frequent workshops and weekly in-class mentoring by CAL Teaching Artists, CAL facilitated teachers' capacities to help students make connections across subject matter areas. In this article I discuss how CAL as a professional development model for integrating the arts into the school curriculum, formed the basis of many of the School-University Partnerships, I developed to connect pre-service music education students with in-service music teachers. Through our partnerships, our students are learning what I …

Lessons From The Stairwell: Celebrating And Sustaining The Pedagogical Legacy Of Lee Pogonowski, Shane Bordeau
Visions of Research in Music Education
As a teacher and researcher of music education for more than forty years, Lee Pogonowski was an early voice in disrupting traditional approaches to teaching and learning, inviting student-centered approaches that emphasized music as an aesthetic experience (Biasini & Pogonowski, 1969; Pogonowski, 2001). The influence of her work continues to reverberate throughout the field of music education, through the legacy of her impact on her students (Allsup, & Baxter, 2004; Greher, 2004; Robinson et al., 2011). Reflections on this legacy, through stories and memories of experiences in her classroom serve as a reminder and challenge to continue and expand the …

Visions of Research in Music Education
This essay concerns the educational legacy of Professor Lenore (Lee) Pogonowski, who passed away in early 2022 after a long career of teaching music education at Teachers College Columbia University. In this manuscript, I discuss the instructional design model that Lee Pogonowski called the “creative music strategy.” Her greatest achievement, most will agree, was her ability to inspire creativity while modeling the implementation of this instructional model. Pogonowski’s beliefs about the ineffability of the creative classroom aligned with her refusal to fix its instructional processes through the inherent linearity of the printed word. She did, however, leave her university students …
