According to the World Meteorological Organization, since 2000, there has been an increase in global flood-related disasters by 134 percent compared to the previous decades. Efficient flood risk management strategies necessitate a holistic approach to evaluating flood vulnerabilities and risks. Catastrophic losses can occur when the peak flow values in the rivers in a basin coincide. Therefore, estimating the joint flood risks in a region is vital, especially when frequent occurrences of extreme events are experienced. This study focuses on estimating the joint flood risks due to river flow extremes in the Grand River watershed in Canada. For this purpose, …

The Real Energy Burden: Exploring The Intersection Of Equity And Home Energy Efficiency In Vermont, Nathaniel G. Roe
ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)
This thesis quantifies the financial burden induced by a home energy efficiency and electrification project through a new metric, the real energy burden (REB). REB captures the percentage of income allocated to the annualized capital cost and the annual energy expenditure of an energy efficiency project. To characterize and demonstrate the use of REB, I draw data from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory ResStock Housing Stock tool to simulate a 2023 energy efficiency and electrification project for three Vermont household archetypes: low, moderate, and high incomes. I find that the REB for the low income archetype is above the energy …

Leveraging Magnetic Nanoparticles And Photothermal Heating For On-Chip Processing Of Therapeutic Exosomes, Siddhant Parwal
Leveraging Magnetic Nanoparticles And Photothermal Heating For On-Chip Processing Of Therapeutic Exosomes, Siddhant Parwal
Engineering Undergraduate Senior Theses
Drug delivery is a key area of therapeutic development that focuses on delivery of active agents to target tissues while minimizing off-target toxicities. Current methods have drawbacks including immunogenicity and suboptimal tissue targeting. Exosomes have gained attention as an ideal delivery molecule due to their high biocompatibility, cargo agnostic nature, and innate targeting ability. The current roadblock for exosomes as a therapeutic modality is the unscalable and inefficient manufacturing paradigm.
We validate a developed microfluidic device for integrated isolation and therapeutic loading of exosomes from native biofluid. The developed system captures exosomes by use of anti-exosome antibodies conjugated to magnetic, …

Formalizing Dispute Resolution: Effects Of Village Courts In Bangladesh, Martin Mattsson, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak
Discussion Papers
Disagreements over business deals, land boundaries, or loan non-repayment are very common sources of disputes, and courts are congested in developing countries. We evaluate the effects of the government introducing formal “village courts” (VCs) in rural Bangladesh using a randomized controlled trial with a pre-analysis plan. VCs were designed to improve dispute resolution and relieve the pressure on congested district courts. We find that VCs are more of a substitute for the ubiquitous informal dispute resolution mechanism (DRM) called shalish. VCs become functional and active in treated areas, but shalish remains the primary preferred DRM in both treatment and …

Gnsi Decision Brief: A Lasting Peace To The Russo-Ukraine War: Obstacles And Considerations, Golfo Alexopolous, Tad Schnaufer
GNSI Decision Briefs
When the current conflict between Ukraine and Russia started in 2014, with Russia’s annexation of Crimea and support of separatists in the Donbas, negotiated settlements failed to bring peace. Both Minsk agreements of 2014 and 2015 did little to return to pre-war conditions and instead created a frozen conflict that reignited with Russia’s invasion in February of 2022. With that recent failure, how will opposing Russian and Ukrainian perspectives limit the success of any settlement to the conflict? Each of the belligerents in the current war in Ukraine has a distinct perspective regarding their nation’s origins, historical experiences, and national …

Taking The Gavel Away From The Executive Branch: The Indeterminate Sentencing Scheme Under S.B. 201 Is Ripe For Review And Unconstitutional, Jessica Crtalic
Cleveland State Law Review
In 2019, Senate Bill 201, also known as the Reagan Tokes Act, reintroduced an indeterminate sentencing scheme in Ohio whereby sentences are assigned in the form of a range. Under this sentencing scheme, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, through the parole board, has discretion to retain an inmate past the presumptive release date. This fails to afford the accused their guaranteed right to a jury trial, improperly places judiciary power in the hands of the executive branch, and scrutinizes the violation of due process such that the defendant is being denied a fair hearing and notice. Not only …
