Technology Driven Racial Reconciliation: A Practical Guide For The Use Of Technology In Truth Commissions, Oladeji Tiamiyu, Amy J. Schmitz, Colin Rule
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Truth and Reconciliation Commissions have played a valuable role internationally in providing an outlet for meaningful dialogue concerning systemic factors contributing to regional instability. At the same time, technology has become an important vehicle for dialogue. This article therefore introduces considerations about how technology can be used to expand dialogue and strengthen the objectives of American truth commissions addressing racial inequities. As a larger segment of the population shows increasing preference for technology-based systems, this article emphasizes that technology can and should complement, rather than supplant, in-person engagements to respond to differing stakeholder preferences for online and in-person interactions. Intimate Partner Violence Screening In The Emergency Department, Rebecca Stuerman
Intimate Partner Violence Screening In The Emergency Department, Rebecca Stuerman
Dissertations
Problem: Intimate partner violence [IPV] is a public health concern that affects one in three women worldwide. IPV can be addressed through identification and early intervention with minimal risk to the patient. The emergency department is an important setting for screening given the frequency with which people who experience abuse may present with IPV-related injuries and other related concerns (depression, suicidality, etc.). Successfully implementing a validated tool for screening and providing early access to resources and referrals may help to mitigate the longterm negative impacts of IPV. The need for increased staff education was a major barrier to screening for …

Cyber Plungers: Colonial Pipeline And The Case For An Omnibus Cybersecurity Legislation, Asaf Lubin
Articles by Maurer Faculty
The May 2021 ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline was a wake-up call for a federal administration slow to realize the dangers that cybersecurity threats pose to our critical national infrastructure. The attack forced hundreds of thousands of Americans along the east coast to stand in endless lines for gas, spiking both prices and public fears. These stressors on our economy and supply chains triggered emergency proclamations in four states, including Georgia. That a single cyberattack could lead to a national emergency of this magnitude was seen by many as proof of even more crippling threats to come. Executive Director of …

Architecture Faculty Research
In modern cities, urban public spaces, such as parks, gardens, plazas, and streets, play a big role in people’s social activities, physical activities, mental health, and overall well-being. However, the traditional post-occupancy evaluation (POE) process for public spaces such as large urban parks is extremely difficult, especially for long-term user experiences through observations, surveys, and interviews. On the other hand, social media has emerged as a major media outlet recording millions of user experiences to the public, which provides opportunities to inform how public space is used and perceived by users. Furthermore, unlike previous research that primarily presented descriptive characters …

Harnessing Large Language Models For Simulink Toolchain Testing And Developing Diverse Open-Source Corpora Of Simulink Models For Metric And Evolution Analysis, Sohil Lal Shrestha
Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive
MATLAB/Simulink is a de-facto standard tool in several safety-critical industries such as automotive, aerospace, healthcare, and industrial automation for system modeling and analysis, compiling models to code, and deploying code to embedded hardware. On one hand, testing cyber-physical system (CPS) development tools such as MathWorks’ Simulink is important as a bug in the toolchain may propagate to the artifacts they produce. On the other hand, it is equally important to understand modeling practices and model evolution to support engineers and scientists as they are widely used in design, simulation, and verification of CPS models. Existing work in this area is …

Disease-Associated Mutation A554v Disrupts Normal Autoinhibition Of Dnmt1, Rebecca L. Switzer, Zach J. Hartman, Geoffrey R. Hewett, Clara F. Carroll
Faculty Journal Articles
DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) is the enzyme primarily responsible for propagation of the methylation pattern in cells. Mutations in DNMT1 have been linked to the development of adult-onset neurodegenerative disorders; these disease-associated mutations occur in the regulatory replication foci-targeting sequence (RFTS) domain of the protein. The RFTS domain is an endogenous inhibitor of DNMT1 activity that binds to the active site and prevents DNA binding. Here, we examine the impact of the disease-associated mutation A554V on normal RFTS-mediated inhibition of DNMT1. Wild-type and mutant proteins were expressed and purified to homogeneity for biochemical characterization. The mutation increased DNA binding affinity …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Enabling education programs in Australia assist students, who would otherwise have been excluded from higher education, to transition into undergraduate study. These programs emerged independently in response to the needs of individual universities and the varying cohorts of students they serve. The exclusion of these programs from the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) has meant they remain unregulated, with no national framework for standards. The development of academic standards is a dynamic, consensus driven process, and benchmarking provides a method through which academics from across institutions can work in partnership to reach shared understandings and improve and align practices. This practice …
Trans-Formation: Establishing Interdisciplinary Support For The Transgender Experience Through Historical, Biological, And Religious Lenses, Gaymarie Vaughan
Trans-Formation: Establishing Interdisciplinary Support For The Transgender Experience Through Historical, Biological, And Religious Lenses, Gaymarie Vaughan
Graduate Liberal Studies Theses and Dissertations
Quite frankly, nothing could be more relevant to a modern discussion about what it means to be human than the emergence of discourse on transgender identity. By looking at the long history of human evolution, the impact that the progressing fields of science and medicine have had on human development, and the human need for bodily autonomy, it should be taken for granted that transgender issues belong in public discourse and that transgender people deserve to enjoy the same rights and freedoms all other humans share. This research advocates for best and most inclusive societal practices for transgender individuals by …
The Realisation Of Grammatical Tone In Cigogo Verbs, Amani J. Chipalo
The Realisation Of Grammatical Tone In Cigogo Verbs, Amani J. Chipalo
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This descriptive study aims to investigate how grammatical tone is realized in Cigogo verbs. The information was gathered through interviews and oral history techniques in the villages of Muungano, Ilolo, and Ndebwe in the Mvumi division. The replies from the interviews and the storytelling were captured using an MP3 recorder. The verb forms were then evoked for the analysis of the tone patterns based on the autosegmental theory. The findings show that Cigogo uses a grammatical tone to convey the perfective aspect, imperative mood, and reflexiveness in the past tense (immediate past). The kind of verb stem determines where the …

Language Contact And The State Of Multilingualism In The Linguistic Landscape Of Tete Province In Mozambique, Crisófia Langa Da Da Câmara, Amani Lusekelo
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Mozambique is a multilingual country that adopted Portuguese as the language of official communication right from Independence Day in 1975. Later in the 1990s it adopted 19 Bantu languages as the media of instruction in lower education. This move opened an avenue for Bantu languages to be used in public domains in the country. Since the Metropolitan Maputo had been the centre of previous research of languages of public spaces, this paper looks at the language uses that unfold in the signposts of Tete Province to determine the manifestations of the Bantu languages in urban public spaces. Firstly, the findings …

Neurofibromatosis Type 1-Associated Optic Pathway Gliomas: Current Challenges And Future Prospects, Yunshuo Tang, David H Gutmann
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Optic pathway glioma (OPG) occurs in as many as one-fifth of individuals with the neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) cancer predisposition syndrome. Generally considered low-grade and slow growing, many children with NF1-OPGs remain asymptomatic. However, due to their location within the optic pathway, ~20-30% of those harboring NF1-OPGs will experience symptoms, including progressive vision loss, proptosis, diplopia, and precocious puberty. While treatment with conventional chemotherapy is largely effective at attenuating tumor growth, it is not clear whether there is much long-term recovery of visual function. Additionally, because these tumors predominantly affect young children, there are unique challenges to NF1-OPG diagnosis, monitoring, …

Parental Involvement And Student Success, Sally Demolen
Masters Projects
Research has revealed important information about the importance of parental involvement within the school setting, yet Brimley Area School has not developed nor implemented any components of the MiFamily: Michigan Family Engagement Framework. This project explores the history of parental involvement, and the benefits students inherit such as academically, socially, and emotionally. An effective parent-to-school relationship must acknowledge the differing dynamics of families within the district and develop a plan that is cohesive to the needs of all families. Such a plan needs to stretch beyond traditional parental involvement and intentionally target needs that are affiliated with correct grade levels. …

Time-Varying Predictability Of Financial Stress On Inequality In United Kingdom, Edmond Berisha, David Gabauer, Rangan Gupta, Jacobus Nel
Department of Economics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Purpose: Existing empirical evidence suggests that episodes of financial stress (crises) can act as driver of growth of inequality. Consequently, in this study, the authors explore the time-varying predictive power of an index of financial stress for growth in income (and consumption) inequality in the UK. The authors focus on the UK since income (and consumption) inequality data are available at a high frequency, i.e. on a quarterly basis for over 40 years (June, 1975 to March, 2016). Design/methodology/approach: The authors use Wang and Rossi's approach to analyze the time-varying impact of financial stress on inequality. Hence, the method provides …

1. Researchers can investigate many aspects of animal ecology through noninvasive photo–identification. Photo–identification is becoming more efficient as matching individuals between photos is increasingly automated. However, the convolutional neural network models that have facilitated this change need many training images to generalize well. As a result, they have often been developed for individual species that meet this threshold. These single-species methods might underperform, as they ignore potential similarities in identifying characteristics and the photo–identification process among species. 2. In this paper, we introduce a multi-species photo–identification model based on a state-of-the-art method in human facial recognition, the ArcFace classification head. …

Increasing Retention And Knowledge Transfer Through Digital Storytelling And The Comics Medium: A Design Case, Kevin Thorn, Edd
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Asynchronous multimedia learning is a common form of delivering training in the workforce industry, and organizations rely on a completion status to measure that training. However, measuring retention and knowledge transfer of new material rarely occurs during asynchronous learning. Grounded in the Visual Language Theory (VLT) and a delivery modality of digital storytelling (DST) suggest that sequential images presented as a visual narrative have higher degrees of retention. Thus, knowledge transfer occurs when learners relate to the narrative and visual applications when engaging with a comics approach to learning. From 2019-2022 a story emerged to design and develop an asynchronous …

BACKGROUND: For difficult or rare procedures, simulation offers an opportunity to provide education and training. In developing an adequate model to utilize in simulation, 3D printing has emerged as a useful technology to provide detailed, accessible, and high-fidelity models. Nasal osteotomy is an essential step in many rhinoplasty surgeries, yet it can be challenging to perform and difficult to receive adequate exposure to this nuanced portion of the procedure. As it currently stands, there are limited opportunities to practice nasal osteotomy due to the reliance on cadaveric bones, which are expensive, difficult to obtain, and require appropriate facilities and personnel. …

Background:
Early treatment of infants with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) improves outcomes. Newborn screening allows for early treatment of infants with SMA, even before signs of the disease are evident. In spite of early identification and treatment, newborn screen and prenatally-identified infants with SMA may still suffer effects of their disease. Approximately half of infants have significant gross motor developmental delays, while others meet developmental milestones on time. There is no current objective method to identify early-treated infants with SMA at risk for gross motor delays who might benefit from modifications to current treatment practices.
