The Biblical Worldview And Libraries, Gregory A. Smith
The Biblical Worldview And Libraries, Gregory A. Smith
Faculty Publications and Presentations
This essay documents the process and outcomes of a structured, group-based effort used to explore the connections between the biblical worldview and librarianship. Participants in the inquiry process included the author (as moderator) and seven of his colleagues. The process entailed examining four “frames” of the biblical narrative (Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Consummation) and eliciting implications for the realm of libraries. The biblical worldview was found to provide remarkably practical theory concerning libraries, accounting for their existence across diverse cultures worldwide; plausibly explaining virtues, flaws, opportunities, and challenges; and prescribing principles through which Christians can advance God’s kingdom through library …

New England Households Rely On A Mix Of Child Care Arrangements, Jess Carson
New England Households Rely On A Mix Of Child Care Arrangements, Jess Carson
Carsey Publications
In this data snapshot, author Jess Carson reports that data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau between January and May 2023 show that 70 percent of New England households with a child under five use child care, and more than one-third of those rely on multiple arrangements. Findings suggest that even having access to a formal slot in center- or home-based care may not be sufficient for meeting families’ needs. Finding the right type and mix of care is complex and underscores the need for flexible and diverse child care options for New England families.

The Effect Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Kps Student Enrollment And Nwea Test Scores, Randall W. Eberts
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This report focuses on the COVID-19 pandemic in the Kalamazoo Public Schools District in Kalamazoo, Michigan, which closed its doors to students from mid-March 2020 to June 2021. During this time, instruction transitioned from face-to-face to virtual, with students having three options for virtual instruction. In addition to individual KPS student data, the study looks at the NWEA national sample as presented in several publications and technical appendices. The study addresses three basic questions, as well as examining students’ race/ethnicity and poverty status, summer learning loss to determine the change in achievement gains, and attendance rates as an example of …

Neurons in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) generate circadian changes in the rates of spontaneous action potential firing that regulate and synchronize daily rhythms in physiology and behavior. Considerable evidence suggests that daily rhythms in the repetitive firing rates (higher during the day than at night) of SCN neurons are mediated by changes in subthreshold potassium (K

METHODS: The top 100 articles with the highest AAS were identified using the Altmetric explorer in May 2020. AAS, journal name, and mentions from various social …
Evaluating Salmonella Cross Contamination In Raw Chicken Thighs In Simulated Post-Chill Tanks, Raziya Sadat
Evaluating Salmonella Cross Contamination In Raw Chicken Thighs In Simulated Post-Chill Tanks, Raziya Sadat
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Salmonella contamination poses a significant risk to food safety, particularly in poultry products and public health. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of peracetic acid (PAA) treatment in mitigating Salmonella cross-contamination in chicken thighs within simulated post-chill tanks, considering different inoculum concentrations and organic matter (OM) levels.
The experiment involved the use of five distinct Salmonella serovars to inoculate chicken thighs, which were categorized into two groups: higher inoculation level (ca. 7 log CFU/mL) and lower inoculation level (ca, 4 log CFU/mL). These groups underwent treatment with four different solutions, including 540 ppm PAA with 1.5% OM, 540 ppm …

Language Ideologies And Practices In Ghana's English Language Education: A Critical Analysis Of Golden English And National Literacy Acceleration Program Formative Report, Gideon Kwashie Kwawukumey
Theses and Dissertations
Ghana’s transitional bilingual education has received scholarly attention of policymakers and language educators. Despite the extensive scholarship on transitional bilingual education in Ghana, little has been done to examine the relationship between transitional bilingual policy: National Literacy Acceleration Program (NALAP) and language teaching materials (e.g., English Textbooks) to ascertain whether the two have a shared ideology in promoting multilingual education. Through the use of thematic analysis and discourse analysis tools, this thesis examines both linguistic and the rhetorical (specifically visual) features of Golden English. In this work, I emphasize the importance of storytelling as a language practice used to show …
Student Perceptions Of Praise In L2 Written Feedback, Kate Matthews
Student Perceptions Of Praise In L2 Written Feedback, Kate Matthews
Theses and Dissertations
Providing students with meaningful written feedback is a difficult task that teachers must perform in an ESL classroom. Although many studies have looked at written feedback in terms of directness, criticism, and suggestions, very few studies have examined praise in the form of written feedback and what students' perceptions of praise are. To determine the effect that praise has on ESL students, we examined student responses to two praise types given student proficiency levels and cultural backgrounds. In this study, 109 students from an intensive English Program participated in a survey that asked for opinions on person and performance praise …

An Observed Increase In Cardiovascular And Respiratory-Disease Related Hospitalizations And Mortality In An Area Surrounding A Hazardous Waste Thermal Treatment Plant, Liana Isabelle Dela Torre Baconguis
LSU Master's Theses
Particulate matter (PM) pollution is highly correlated with respiratory and cardiovascular disease incidence. The generation of oxidative stress is a major way by which PM can damage the body. Environmentally persistent free radical-containing PM are generated by combustion processes and are capable of exerting increased damage on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems due to their ability to remain stable and regenerate reactive oxygen species for up to five years. Clean Harbors, LLC operates a thermal treatment plant near the city of Colfax, LA in Central Louisiana. Its regular open burning of explosives causes disturbances to the community, such as loud …

Writing Trauma At Home: The Poetics Of Testimony In Iraq’S Literary And Cultural Production, Imran Alkhalifah
Writing Trauma At Home: The Poetics Of Testimony In Iraq’S Literary And Cultural Production, Imran Alkhalifah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation explores the unconventional forms of testimony to trauma in Iraq. Due to a long history of war and/or sectarian violence, Iraq’s literary and cultural production provide unique ways of representing traumatic experience. These representations, I argue, challenge the predominate western notions of representing trauma. The unique ways of writing/expressing trauma examined in this dissertation offer a new perspective of reading trauma as opposed to the postmodern trauma aesthetics that highlights fragmentation, repetition, and dissociation as symptoms of traumatic experience. This hegemonic approach has led to a deprived investigation of the unique social and historical contexts in which trauma …
Combining Financial Literacy, Capability And Homebuyer Education: The Effects Of A Young-Adult Tailored Homeowner Preparation Course On Understanding Homeownership And Ownership Sustainability In Urban Memphis, Cashundra Jackson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Research has shown that the levels of financial literacy in urban communities are extensively low and directly affect individuals’ financial capability while determining the success of their financial future. This lack of financial literacy is reflected through the lack of wealth accumulation in these communities. One of the biggest measures of wealth is homeownership and minority groups are least likely to own homes in their lifetimes while being most likely to default on home loans due to the lack of financial literacy and capability needed to sustain their finances. The purpose of this study is to determine whether educating younger, …
Lipid Membranes Mediated Interactions And Self-Assembly Of Janus Nanoparticles, Yu Zhu
Lipid Membranes Mediated Interactions And Self-Assembly Of Janus Nanoparticles, Yu Zhu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Since many advanced applications require specific assemblies of nanoparticles (NPs), considerable efforts have been made to fabricate nanoassemblies with specific geometries. In this dissertation, we demonstrate the potential of lipid membranes as a medium for the self-assembly of NPs. To control their degree of adhesion to lipid membranes, the NPs are surface modified into hydrophilic Janus NPs such as one moiety interacts more attractively with the lipid head groups than water while the other moiety interacts more attractively with water than the lipid head groups. First, using extensive molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained implicit-solvent model, in conjunction with the …

Cultural Expression And Relevancy Communicated Through Marching Band Performance In Louisiana, Nicholas Ashton
LSU Master's Theses
This study explored the use of marching band membership as a medium of mass communication through in-depth interviews with Louisiana collegiate marching band participants and subsequent analysis. Since these groups tend to serve as their school’s face and brand ambassadors in many cases, this study will look to their constituent members to explore what it is truly like to be a small cog that makes the whole run effectively and efficiently. Intersections of a marching band’s outward-facing image and its members’ personally held values, beliefs, and preferences are of specific interest in an effort to understand the effects of mass …
Evaluating Vaccine Management Strategies For Edwardsiella Ictaluri Infections In Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Brandy Malbrough
Evaluating Vaccine Management Strategies For Edwardsiella Ictaluri Infections In Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Brandy Malbrough
LSU Master's Theses
Aquaculture is a globally important industry that faces significant challenges due to infectious diseases, which can result in substantial financial losses. In 2011, a new strain of Edwardsiella ictaluri emerged as a major pathogen affecting zebrafish in the ornamental fish industry, leading to high mortality rates and posing a severe threat to the sector. Vaccines provide potential benefits for disease prevention in aquaculture, particularly live-attenuated vaccines (LAVs), which induce strong host immune responses. Bacterial attenuation for vaccine development has evolved from serial passage to more targeted genetic modification techniques. However, regulatory constraints limit the availability of licensed LAVs for aquaculture. …

The Limitations Of Periapical X-Ray Assessment In Endodontic Diagnosis—A Systematic Review, A Gliga, M Imre, S Grandini, C Marruganti, C Gaeta, D Bodnar, Ba Dimitriu, F Foschi
Peninsula Dental School
Diagnosis is a key aspect in endodontic treatment, in a decade where invasive interventions are misapprehended as social tendency instead of medical necessity. All diagnostic facets should be considered before intending the operative phase. Intraoral endodontic radiology-based diagnosis has been shown to be limited. Periapical X-ray is the most used endodontic imaging, yet it does not provide high accuracy. Traditionally, dentists have been trained to diagnose a cyst by certain aspects (size, shape and appearance); hence, an assumption that teeth are affected by “periapical cyst” were subjected to unnecessary extraction or apicoectomy. The aim of this systematic review is to …

Moral Framing And Affirmative Outreach As Drivers Of Health Insurance Enrollment In Medicaid And A State Exchange: A Randomized Field Experiment, Wendy Netter Epstein, Hansoo Ko, Christopher Robertson, Kevin Wilson, David Yokum
Faculty Scholarship
Legal efforts to expand health insurance coverage have relied on traditional economic theory. Despite expanded subsidies and some state mandates, nearly 30 million Americans are uninsured, including many who could afford it. Where economic self-interest has not fostered enrollment, we test whether moral framing around community or responsibility could be more effective.
We present a pre-registered field experiment with a state government (Maryland) dataset of uninsured residents (N=16,477). We randomized to four conditions: (a) no-contact control, (b) affordability messaging (status quo), (c) responsibility messaging, or (d) community messaging, and found responsibility and community messages most effective (an 18.5% change).

Institutional Rhetoric And Campus Reactions: A Multi-Method Case Study Exploring University Communication And Social Responsibility In A Racial Crisis, Rockia K. Harris
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This case study explores how an institution in the southeastern conference (SEC) responded to racial reckonings before and after the 2020 murder of George Floyd, how students came to perceive the institution's responses and commitment to diversity and inclusion. To understand this phenomenon beyond apologia and image repair theory, the discourse of renewal theoretical framework and university social responsibility guides this dissertation. This work fills a gap in the literature on crisis communication in response to racism in higher education spaces. Using critical discourse analysis and an open-ended survey, this dissertation further explores the idea of social responsibility of institutions …

Size Effects In Additively Manufactured Inconel-718 Thin Elements And Cellular Structures, Reem Abdelkarim Abo Znemah
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A current focus in the additive manufacturing (AM) research community is the production of complex shaped metallic parts and cellular structures. Many researchers went on analyzing and simulating these structures without considering the effect of the element thickness and heterogeneous printing parameters on the resulting material behavior. To advance the application of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), an AM process, in producing Inconel718 (IN718) complex shaped parts and cellular structures, this study aimed to investigate the effect of thin-walled elements thickness on the mechanical characteristics of both the individual elements and overall cellular structure. A multiscale experimental evaluation of the …
