Architecture Cultures Student Papers
Since the Romans, the Italian region has been at the forefront of architecture and public spaces in particular; with iconic landmarks such as the Roman Forum and Colosseum enabling public engagement while creating an inviting space for people to gather. Through the Renaissance period, palazzos often had areas where the public can sit as they maneuver through the city. As many traverse city streets, oftentimes they would find themselves in a piazza.

While touring many different places in Italy, I was able to recognize motifs, see architectural terms studied in class, and analyze public spaces and what they were used for. This essay explores the functioning of these old-world public spaces when they were first created, the intentions of their planners, and the ways in which these spaces have evolved and adapted over time.

In our travels to Florence and Rome we experienced various piazzas and saw how people interacted in those spaces. The piazzas chosen to analyze in this essay are Piazza della Signoria in Florence and Piazza del Popolo in Rome. This essay will analyze how the original design for these spaces translated into modern day use, and compare to modern standards, while also comparing the two piazzas.

Throughout its history, 60 families dominated Siena, while the council of the Nine, acting as the executive authority, ruled the city as a whole. In the modern day, 17 of these families remain, albeit without the power and prominence of past centuries. These ancient families divided the city into 60 contradas (districts), with the Piazza del Campo representing the historical neutral zone where all the prominent factions could come together beneath the watchful eye of the Nine.

Italy is a country filled with rich architecture that has lasted for centuries. Its iconic buildings are a testament to its history, influence, and contributions to architecture today. Going on this trip opened my eyes to how incredible some of these structures are in real life; I was able to be immersed in the environment and experience what they were purposed for. Each city we visited had its own unique atmosphere and character.

Europe has been home to a plethora of civilizations throughout the millennia. Many had blossomed into mature and powerful nations that left their lasting mark on all they encompassed, before their eventual collapse. Due to this, each subsequent society has been able to build upon what was left behind by their predecessors leading to the rich blend of antiquity and modernity in many of the continent's urban areas.

Though each city is unique in its marvels, the main focus of this paper will compare two cities of those we visited, Florence and Rome. Both cities are prominent in that they are vibrant historical centers for art, innovation, and architecture. Through personal experiences and observations of local activity we can compare the design and orientation of the streets, piazzas, and buildings, while understanding how they are used today.

Over the tropical land surface, accurate estimates of future changes in temperature, precipitation and evapotranspiration are crucial for ecological sustainability, but remain highly uncertain. Here we develop a series of emergent constraints (ECs) by using historical and future outputs from the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) Earth System Models under the four basic Shared Socio-economic Pathway scenarios (SSP126, SSP245, SSP370, and SSP585). Results show that the temperature sensitivity to precipitation during 2015–2100, which varies substantially in the original CMIP6 outputs, becomes systematically negative across SSPs after application of the EC, with absolute values between −1.10 °C mm−1 day …

Risk Management Perceptions And Preventive Practices Of Athletic Directors From Naia Schools, Yan Gioseffi
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
The increase in the number of incidents associated with sports has led to the rise of litigation, and physical, emotional, and financial damage to stakeholders. Collegiate athletic directors (ADs) have the duty to keep their programs safe.
This study aimed to explore and understand the practices, perceptions, and experiences of ADs from National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) institutions regarding preventive risk management. As risk management is significantly new in the sporting industry, an exploratory study using a qualitative design, grounded in narrative inquiry was conducted using the D.I.M. Process as a guide to collect data from 10 NAIA ADs …

The quest for a non-hormonal male contraceptive pill for men still exists. Serine protease 37 (PRSS37) is a sperm-specific protein that when ablated in mice renders them sterile. In this study we sought to examine the molecular sequelae of PRSS37 loss to better understand its molecular function, and to determine whether human PRSS37 could rescue the sterility phenotype of knockout (KO) mice, allowing for a more appropriate model for drug molecule testing. To this end, we used CRISPR-EZ to create mice lacking the entire coding region of Prss37, used pronuclear injection to create transgenic mice expressing human PRSS37, intercrossed these …

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an emerging arbovirus found in Africa. While RVFV is pantropic and infects many cells and tissues, viral replication and necrosis within the liver play a critical role in mediating severe disease. The low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (Lrp1) is a recently identified host factor for cellular entry and infection by RVFV. The biological significance of Lrp1, including its role in hepatic disease in vivo, however, remains to be determined. Because Lrp1 has a high expression level in hepatocytes, we developed a mouse model in which Lrp1 is specifically deleted in hepatocytes to test how …

BACKGROUND: Shared decision making (SDM) in breast cancer care improves outcomes, but it is not routinely implemented. Results from the What Matters Most trial demonstrated that early-stage breast cancer surgery conversation aids, when used by surgeons after brief training, improved SDM and patient-reported outcomes. Trial surgeons and patients both encouraged using the conversation aids in routine care. We will develop and evaluate an online learning collaborative, called the SHared decision making Adoption Implementation Resource (SHAIR) Collaborative, to promote early-stage breast cancer surgery SDM by implementing the conversation aids into routine preoperative care. Learning collaboratives are known to be effective for …

Hyperspectral Point Cloud Projection For The Semantic Segmentation Of Multimodal Hyperspectral And Lidar Data With Point Convolution-Based Deep Fusion Neural Networks, Kevin T. Decker, Brett J. Borghetti
Faculty Publications
The fusion of dissimilar data modalities in neural networks presents a significant challenge, particularly in the case of multimodal hyperspectral and lidar data. Hyperspectral data, typically represented as images with potentially hundreds of bands, provide a wealth of spectral information, while lidar data, commonly represented as point clouds with millions of unordered points in 3D space, offer structural information. The complementary nature of these data types presents a unique challenge due to their fundamentally different representations requiring distinct processing methods. In this work, we introduce an alternative hyperspectral data representation in the form of a hyperspectral point cloud (HSPC), which …
Improving The High School And College Classroom Experience For Learners With Refugee Status: Theory, Practice, And Change., Kayte Thomas, Sara-Jean Lipmen
Improving The High School And College Classroom Experience For Learners With Refugee Status: Theory, Practice, And Change., Kayte Thomas, Sara-Jean Lipmen
Journal of Applied Disciplines
Refugee populations are increasing globally, and children make up more than fifty percent of those displaced. Unique experiences that come with forced migration including fragmented education, trauma, family separation, grief, and adverse other effects can impact learning in the classroom for refugee students. Existing data indicates that schools lack sufficient protocols to meet the needs of students with refugee status who consistently face risks associated with ill-prepared learning environments, and therefore must rethink possibilities to address this. By adopting strategic decolonized approaches, educational leaders can create supportive environments which improve instructional methods and learning outcomes for these students as they …
Solemn Vow: Solum's Originalism, Treaties, And Tribal Sovereignty In Castro-Huerta, Liam T. Sheridan
Solemn Vow: Solum's Originalism, Treaties, And Tribal Sovereignty In Castro-Huerta, Liam T. Sheridan
Maine Law Review
In Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta, the Supreme Court held that states have inherent authority to prosecute crimes committed by non-Indians in “Indian country.” Only two years earlier, the Court in McGirt v. Oklahoma held that most of eastern Oklahoma was Indian country, and thus immune from any state criminal jurisdiction. Castro-Huerta limited this immunity and narrowed the Court’s view of tribal sovereignty as a whole. The majority represented the Court’s originalist faction—minus Justice Gorsuch, who had penned both the majority opinion in McGirt and the dissent in Castro-Huerta. The majority and dissent disagreed over whether federal statutes preempted Oklahoma’s criminal jurisdiction. …

The Growing List Of Reasons To Amend The Maine Indian Jurisdictional Agreement, Nicole Friederichs
Maine Law Review
The Passamaquoddy Tribe and the Penobscot Nation brought their lands claims against the State of Maine in an effort to reclaim taken lands, to ensure that they could self-determine their futures and to hold on to their cultures and languages. What they faced were a state and federal governments opposed to such a goal. With favorable court decisions in hand, the Tribes began the long process of negotiating for the financial restitution of those claims. They learned, however, that restitution—the recovery of a small portion of their traditional territories—would only be possible if an agreement was made with the State …

One Nation, Under Fraud: A Remonstrance, Hon. Donna M. Loring, Hon. Eric M. Mehnert, Joseph G.E. Gousse Esq.
Maine Law Review
This Remonstrance presents a counter-cultural narrative and analysis of Maine’s legal, political, economic, and social interactions with the Wabanaki people. Although contemporary indicia of abuses by the State are glaringly obvious, a cohesive modern narrative that incorporates Maine’s history of predation upon and mistreatment of the tribes has remained poorly defined from an historico-legal perspective. Presenting its analysis through an historic, legal, political, economic, and social nexus, this Remonstrance traces the ontogeny of control exerted by the State of Maine over the Wabanaki tribes and endeavors to excavate the hidden historical narrative of the calculated politico-legal regime that has for …
The Dark Matter Of Federal Indian Law: The Duty Of Protection, Matthew L.M. Fletcher
The Dark Matter Of Federal Indian Law: The Duty Of Protection, Matthew L.M. Fletcher
Maine Law Review
The United States and every federally recognized tribal nation originally entered into a sovereign-to-sovereign relationship highlighted by the duty of protection, an international customary law doctrine in which a larger, stronger sovereign, America in this case, agrees to “protect” the small, weaker sovereign, in this case, tribal nations. America agreed to this in exchange for massive, occasionally unquantifiable amounts of land and resources, as well as the power to control the external sovereign relations of the protected sovereign. The smaller sovereigns received protected reservation lands, hunting and fishing rights, small cash infusions, and the vague promise of protection. What tribal …

Considerations For Developing Effective Mobile Mental Health Applications, Brennan Remington, Daniel F. Upchurch
Considerations For Developing Effective Mobile Mental Health Applications, Brennan Remington, Daniel F. Upchurch
Multidisciplinary Psychology: A Journal of Collaboration
Mobile mental health applications (MMHAs) are mobile applications developed with the intention of bettering the mental health of their users. There is a wide array of MMHAs currently available on digital markets, but the effectiveness of these applications remains in question. Research on the persuasive strategies employed by these applications would lead to an increase in the effectiveness of intervention methods utilized. Developing guidelines to assist in the creation of these applications would benefit developers and end-users. There is a critical need for MMHAs as they are accessible and often affordable treatment options for hard-to-reach, stigmatized or undertreated populations. This …

The Changing Contours Of The Indian Public Sphere: Courtesans, Culture, And The British Invasion Of Oudh In Kenizé Mourad’S In The City Of Gold And Silver, Anurag Kumar, Isha Malhotra, Rishav Bali
Journal of International Women's Studies
The article explores the role of women in the Indian freedom struggle, particularly Begam Hazarat Mahal of Lucknow through Kenizé Mourad’s In the City of Gold and Silver (2010). The text explicitly and implicitly foregrounds the role of tawaifs (courtesans) in the culture and the literature of the public sphere prior to 1857 or the first Indian freedom struggle. Their participation in the freedom struggle was a response to the British attempt to reduce their role to strictly economic and sexual purposes. The article imbricates the issues of nationalism, gender, and sexuality by mining the invisible contributions of various groups …
Why Ismat Chughtai Faced Trial: An Intersectional Reading Of The Reception Of “Lihaaf” In Colonial India, Mrinalini Raj
Why Ismat Chughtai Faced Trial: An Intersectional Reading Of The Reception Of “Lihaaf” In Colonial India, Mrinalini Raj
Journal of International Women's Studies
In this paper, I study Ismat Chughtai’s short story “Lihaaf” (“The Quilt,” 1942) side by side with her essay “The Lihaaf Trial” (English translation, 2000). I also analyze their reception of these texts in regards to their treatment of sexuality, women, and morality in the colonial period. I engage the texts through the lens of intersectionality. Multiple aspects affected the reception of Chughtai’s “Lihaaf” because it explores the intersection of multiple axes of oppression like gender, colonialism, class, and sexuality. During the colonial period in India, the British colonizers directly influenced Indian morality through laws and emphasized British cultural superiority. …

Assertion Or Transgression: A Critical Study Of Surpankha As An Unwelcomed Girl Child In Kavita Kané’S Lanka’S Princess, Nancy Sharma, Smita Jha
Journal of International Women's Studies
Kavita Kané’s Lanka’s Princess is the retelling of Ramayana3 from the perspective of the often misrepresented and misunderstood character of Surpankha,4 the daughter of rishi (sage) Vishravas and rakshasi (monster) Kaiskesi. Kavita Kané uses myths as a pretext to defy the idea of an ideal femininity in her book. Kané’s representation humanizes the character of Surpankha (translation: woman with sharp fingernails) who was born as the beautiful princess Meenakshi, but her defiant demeanor caused her brother Ravan to give her the name of Surpankha. Kané’s work exhibits the inner thought process of an unwelcome girl child in the family who …

Mothers Born Or Produced?: An Analysis Of The Mother-Daughter Relationship In Well-Behaved Indian Women, Shivalika Agarwal, Nagendra Kumar
Journal of International Women's Studies
The word motherhood has been used for centuries without thorough examination of what it encompasses. Literature exhibits the changing reality and needs of mothering irrespective of the outcome: imposed motherhood, and institutionalized mothers. Motherhood has been bifurcated in meaning as “the potential relationship of any woman to her powers of reproduction and to children; and the institution, which aims at ensuring that that potential-- and all women--shall remain under male control” (Rich 13). A woman’s biological capacity to bear and nurture a child has been a significant factor in the existence of human life. Another facet of this is the …

Redrawing The Contours Of Nationalist Discourse Through The Voices Of Courtesans-Turned-Warriors, Neha Arora
Journal of International Women's Studies
The last quarter of the twentieth century has seen the emergence of a “cult of pluralism” (Chakrabarty) in the writing of Indian history, thus challenging the standardized narrative of the nation. The hegemonic accounts of India’s struggle for independence, which have failed to acknowledge the involvement of many significant warriors, make the inextricable links between power, history, and representation quite apparent. One such exclusion is that of the tawaifs2 of Awadh.3 This hypocrisy combined with the facade of respectability has eclipsed the contribution of tawaifs, demoting them to singing and dancing girls merely. By looking at the role of Begum …
