"A Transient Veil": Appropriation Of Exclusionary Form In Eighteenth-Century Women's Writing, Andrea Ferniany
"A Transient Veil": Appropriation Of Exclusionary Form In Eighteenth-Century Women's Writing, Andrea Ferniany
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
“’A Transient Veil’ : Appropriation of Exclusionary Form in Eighteenth-Century Women’s Writing” is an exploration of how women writers of the eighteenth century strategically and subversively appropriated patriarchal, often misogynistic, literary idioms to expand literary discourse and craft flexible, alternative, and feminine literary forms. It emerges from the desire to underscore what rhetorical features of women’s writing can tell us about the creative agency of women writers. By exclusionary form, I mean to reference both rhetorical conventions and aesthetic traditions that excluded women writers by assuming a male subject position or by the explicit objectification of feminine figures. This dissertation …
Community Engagement/Involvement In School Life: Connecting The Missing Pieces Between School And Community, Shanika Hardy-Hickmon
Community Engagement/Involvement In School Life: Connecting The Missing Pieces Between School And Community, Shanika Hardy-Hickmon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Long Creek Elementary School is a small, rural school with approximately 292 students in Sallis, Mississippi. Long Creek Elementary School has historically struggled with stronger parent involvement in their children’s school life. To address this concern, the administration, faculty, and staff at Long Creek Elementary School targeted barriers to parental involvement/engagement to increase community engagement/involvement in school life and connect the missing pieces between school and community. This has led to discussions of the creation of a parent center to provide parents with daily support and needed resources to contribute to their child/children’s academic success.
The purpose of this study …

Exploring The Role Of Chief Marketing Officer In Profit And Non-Profit Organizations, Aisha Ghimire
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the significance of marketing in top management teams (TMTs) by examining three key areas: CMO studies in marketing strategy literature, the role of the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) in non-profit TMTs, and the role of CMO in crises such as privacy policy changes. Through a combination of panel data analysis, ordinary least squares (OLS) regression, and event studies, this dissertation investigates the influence of CMOs and provides insights for both researchers and practitioners. Overall, the essays aim to test the relevance of CMO presence in different contexts, given that the title of CMO is a significant representation …
Crosscultural Backchannelling Responses Among Second Language Learners, Chien-Hui Hsu
Crosscultural Backchannelling Responses Among Second Language Learners, Chien-Hui Hsu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Backchannel responses (Yngve, 1970) have always been an essential component of conversational interactions that facilitate speaker-listener engagement and mutual shaping of narratives (Bavelas et al., 2000). This study aims to investigate the cross-linguistic difference in backchannelling responses between Taiwan Mandarin and English (General American) second language (L2) learners, and how those differences might impact communication in a cross-cultural classroom. The current study examines 20 participants, ten each from Taiwan Mandarin speakers and American English speakers. Each speaker was observed in an online conversation to eliminate the influence of non-verbal cues such as gestures and facial expressions. The backchannelling responses they …
Examining Institutional Effectiveness Planning As A Tool To Advance Student Success Outcomes For Underrepresented Males, Jazmine Kelley
Examining Institutional Effectiveness Planning As A Tool To Advance Student Success Outcomes For Underrepresented Males, Jazmine Kelley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Higher education should operate as a tool by which democratic equality is enhanced for the betterment of society and its occupants; however, there are systemic inequities as it pertains to educational attainment for different groups when considering race, ethnicity, and sex (Anthony et al., 2021a). More often than not, male collegiates that hold racial and ethnic identities outside of the cultural majority have less than satisfactory student success outcomes when compared to their female as well as White counterparts. As scholars have noted, the burden of improvement and advancement of these outcomes should be placed on the institutions rather than …
The Third Ethos: Asexual Potentialities In Transnational Literature Between 1900-1926, Kimberly Allyn Kotel
The Third Ethos: Asexual Potentialities In Transnational Literature Between 1900-1926, Kimberly Allyn Kotel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Third Ethos responds to the call put forth by sexuality studies for more extensive research into asexualities as a burgeoning field of identity and modality. At the same time, it furthers recent literary scholarship that locates the origins of modernism in earlier aesthetic movements such as symbolism, decadence, and aestheticism, underscoring the influence of modernization on artistic output during the fin de siècle while concurrently contributing to the development of Decadent studies. Analyzing Rachilde’s La Jongleuse, Willa Cather’s O Pioneers!, and Sylvia Townsend Warner’s Lolly Willowes, I argue that the Western sociocultural understanding of sex that existed in the …
Bigger Than Bees: Victorian England’S Relationship To The Bee – Considering Symbolism And Understanding, Grace Jacqueline Kaim
Bigger Than Bees: Victorian England’S Relationship To The Bee – Considering Symbolism And Understanding, Grace Jacqueline Kaim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The complex and beautiful relationship the people in Victorian England had to the bee is one that goes beyond ideas of politics and religion. This thesis will explore this relationship by utilizing print, ephemera, jewelry, and household items, to demonstrate how the representation and symbolism of the bee was recognized and cherished by Victorians. While bees did certainly have an intimate relationship to the areas of politics and religion, one that is acknowledged throughout this work, their connection to grander themes of introspection, industrialism, folklore, morality, and status helps us understand the Victorians on a deeper level.

Examining The Impact Of Mississippi's Early Learning Collaboratives In Supporting Children From Low Socioeconomic Backgrounds With Autism, Lisa Suzanne Ryals
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mississippi established the Early Learning Collaborative Act, MS Code § 37-21-51 (2023), in 2013 to expand pre-k opportunities statewide. This study examined the processes within Mississippi’s Early Learning Collaboratives that support school readiness for children from low socioeconomic backgrounds with autism. Improving access, participation, and supports for children from low socioeconomic backgrounds with autism by increasing the components of high-quality inclusive settings allows children to gain the necessary readiness skills for kindergarten. A policy analysis of the Mississippi Early Learning Act (2023) established the first phase of the research, followed by focus groups from the Mississippi Department of Education Office …
The Value Of Empathy For Teachers In Nontraditional Classrooms, Mindy Clair Waldrop
The Value Of Empathy For Teachers In Nontraditional Classrooms, Mindy Clair Waldrop
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Little is known about the experience of teachers in nontraditional classrooms, particularly those in Juvenile Detention Centers (JDCs). Using the tenets of hermeneutic phenomenology this study interpreted the lived experience of teachers in nontraditional classrooms. Hermeneutic principles involve using texts, including interview transcripts, to develop understanding and interpret meaning. Following interviews with teachers currently practicing in the JDC nontraditional classroom setting, the researcher engaged in the hermeneutic circle of understanding, which requires an ongoing commitment to the attitude of hermeneutic phenomenology and reflection (Alsaigh & Coyne, 2021). Four themes emerged as significant to the experience of teachers and their use …
Essays On Monetary Policy And Financial Frictions, David Agyeman-Duodu
Essays On Monetary Policy And Financial Frictions, David Agyeman-Duodu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the implications of monetary policy in two interconnected frameworks. The first chapter investigates the impact of paying interest on reserves on the effectiveness of open market operations via the portfolio balance channel. Using a structural vector autoregression (SVAR) model, I find that responses of output and price levels are muted and uncertain in the post-interest-on-reserves regime, suggesting that open market operations have become less effective in transmitting monetary policy. A corollary to this is that the portfolio balance channel may have been sufficiently weakened after the introduction of interest on reserves policy. The second chapter revisits Alchian …

Dixieland Do Sul: Brazilian Racial Democracy And The Recontextualization Of Transnational Confederate Symbols (Vol. 1), Maximilian Xavier Conrad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Following their defeat in the American Civil War, tens of thousands of American Southerners, many of them former Confederates, fled the United States to seek out new homelands in Latin America. Thousands would set their sights on Brazil, encouraged by the promise of arable land and the prospect of a new society in one of the hemisphere’s last slaveholding societies. Though many of these Confederados returned to the United States after Reconstruction, their influential presence in Brazil has remained a persistent factor. What has been the resulting impact of this nineteenth century Confederate immigration? This thesis volume will argue that …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
OBJECTIVE: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk reduction strategies include early initiation of chemoprophylaxis, reducing missed doses, weight-based dosing and dose adjustment using anti-Xa levels. We hypothesized that time to initiation of chemoprophylaxis would be the strongest modifiable risk for VTE, even after adjusting for competing risk factors.
METHODS: A prospectively maintained trauma registry was queried for patients admitted July 2017-October 2021 who were 18 years and older and received emergency release blood products. Patients with deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism (VTE) were compared to those without (no VTE). Door-to-prophylaxis was defined as time from hospital arrival to first dose of …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) function as potent mediators of intercellular communication for many in vivo processes, contributing to both health and disease related conditions. Given their biological origins and diverse functionality from correspondingly unique "cargo" compositions, both endogenous and modified EVs are garnering attention as promising therapeutic modalities and vehicles for targeted therapeutic delivery applications. Their diversity in composition, however, has revealed a significant need for more comprehensive analytical-based characterization methods, and manufacturing processes that are consistent and scalable. In this review, we explore the dynamic landscape of EV research and development efforts, ranging from novel isolation approaches, to their analytical …

A Critical Assessment Of Bill S-203, Ending The Captivity Of Whales And Dolphins Act: Challenging The Exclusivity Of Anthropocentrism And Science-Based Justifications, Rachel De Graaf
Animal Law Review
Bill S-203, An Act to amend the Criminal Code and other Acts (ending the captivity of whales and dolphins) became Canadian law in 2019, banning the captivity of cetaceans. This Article critically examines Bill S-203, arguing that it is underpinned by anthropocentric and science-based justifications that will work as exclusionary forces against many animals in need of legal protection. Instead, the Article advocates for an empathetic and multi-jural approach that accounts for human-animal interconnectedness and the unique cultures of animals. This argument is theoretically rooted in vegan ecofeminism’s empathic and non-binaristic perspective. As such, this Article scrutinizes the reasoning behind …

Prosecution Of Russian Corporations For War Crimes In Ukraine, Milena Sterio, Michael J. Kelly, Federica D'Alessandra, Dmytro Koval, Lydia Korostelova
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
Russian corporate assets worth billions of dollars are frozen in western capitals pursuant to a robust sanctions regime imposed in the wake of Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine in 2022. While frozen, those assets accrue interest. The costs of rebuilding Ukraine after the war are estimated to exceed $400 billion. This Article offers a legal framework to seize those assets through criminal prosecution of Russian corporations that were complicit in the commission of war crimes. By adapting the practice of securing international arbitration awards, which are regularly satisfied through attachment of assets by courts in foreign jurisdictions, the authors lay …
Delegated Corporate Voting And The Deliberative Franchise, Sarah C. Haan
Delegated Corporate Voting And The Deliberative Franchise, Sarah C. Haan
Seattle University Law Review
Starting in the 1930s with the earliest version of the proxy rules, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has gradually increased the proportion of “instructed” votes on the shareholder’s proxy card until, for the first time in 2022, it required a fully instructed proxy card. This evolution effectively shifted the exercise of the shareholder’s vote from the shareholders’ meeting to the vote delegation that occurs when the share-holder fills out the proxy card. The point in the electoral process when the binding voting choice is communicated is now the execution of the proxy card (assuming the shareholder completes the card …
Capitalism Stakeholderism, Christina Parajon Skinner
Capitalism Stakeholderism, Christina Parajon Skinner
Seattle University Law Review
Today’s corporate governance debates are replete with discussion of how best to operationalize so-called stakeholder capitalism—that is, a version of capitalism that considers the interests of employees, communities, suppliers, and the environment alongside (if not before) a company’s shareholders. So much focus has been dedicated to the question of capitalism’s reform that few have questioned a key underlying premise of stakeholder capitalism: that is, that competitive capitalism does not serve these various constituencies and groups. This Essay presents a different view and argues that capitalism is, in fact, the ultimate form of stakeholderism. As such, the Essay urges that the …

The Esg Information System, Stavros Gadinis, Amelia Miazad
Seattle University Law Review
The mounting focus on ESG has forced internal corporate decision-making into the spotlight. Investors are eager to support companies in innovative “green” technologies and scrutinize companies’ transition plans. Activists are targeting boards whose decisions appear too timid or insufficiently explained. Consumers and employees are incorporating companies sustainability credentials in their purchasing and employment decisions. These actors are asking companies for better information, higher quality reports, and granular data. In response, companies are producing lengthy sustainability reports, adopting ambitious purpose statements, and touting their sustainability credentials. Understandably, concerns about greenwashing and accountability abound, and policymakers are preparing for action.

The Marijuana Insurgency: Federalism And Social Reframing In Policy Reform, Matthew P. Cavedon
The Marijuana Insurgency: Federalism And Social Reframing In Policy Reform, Matthew P. Cavedon
Seattle University Law Review
After fifty years of federal prohibition, marijuana reform efforts have won political and legal success. These victories hold lessons for anyone seeking to resist federal law without being able to directly affect it.
Victory can come from reframing an issue. For marijuana reform, social reframing—not formal legal analysis or material factors—provides the best explanation for how advocates achieved change. Their unconventional political tactics, akin to those used by insurgents in wartime, undercut federal prohibition by winning hearts and minds.
This is an analysis of the sociology of legal change. It is also the story of how ordinary Americans retook personal …
Environmental Enrichment For Farmed Animals, Alexandra Schauer
Environmental Enrichment For Farmed Animals, Alexandra Schauer
Animal Law Review
Environmental enrichment standards are set in many animal welfare laws, but such protections are generally withheld from farmed animals. Instead, farmed animals are subject to substandard enclosures that are under-stimulating and inappropriate for their species-specific behavioral needs. Scientific studies have shown that the inclusion of environmental enrichment in an animal’s enclosure balances their production of stress hormones, which has beneficial implications for the overall health and wellbeing of the animal. Establishing enclosure standards for farmed animals that include provisions relating to environmental enrichment would improve farmed animal well-being and, subsequently, the health of the humans who consume products deriving from …

Saving Species Or Sacrificing Science?: Navigating The Legal Labyrinth Of Research And Conservation Through The Case Of The Long-Tailed Macaque, Maliat Chowdhury
Animal Law Review
For decades, long-tailed macaques have served an instrumental role in advancing biomedical research. However, due to the recent primate shortage in U.S. laboratories, these macaques have become coveted targets for poachers. In 2022, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) elevated the long-tailed macaque’s threat level from “Vulnerable” to “Endangered,” citing research-related capture as a critical factor contributing to their decline. Under this new status, long-tailed macaques are at risk of being categorized under Appendix I of CITES, a designation that will subject them to stricter trade regulations. Alarmed by the potential obstacles this reclassification may pose to scientific …
Animal Sentience Should Be The Key For Future Legislation, Margaret Landi, Lida Anestidou
Animal Sentience Should Be The Key For Future Legislation, Margaret Landi, Lida Anestidou
Animal Law Review
This Article posits that changes in U.S. laws and policies regarding animal experimentation depend on the recognition of animal sentience. Sentience—distinct from cognition and self-awareness—is the ability of an animal to experience pain, pleasure, and other emotions. First, this Article reviews the reasons animals are still used in biomedical research and the relevant characteristics of U.S. law. This is followed by a discussion of sentience and the concepts of cognition and self-awareness, and a discourse on societal interests. The Article concludes with an analysis of six bioethical principles considered central to the future of animal experimentation. Overall, conferring sentience would …
The Repeal Of Religious Accommodations -- A Constitutional Analysis, Ronald J. Colombo
The Repeal Of Religious Accommodations -- A Constitutional Analysis, Ronald J. Colombo
American University Law Review
Under modern Supreme Court jurisprudence, the First Amendment ordinarily imposes no heightened standard of review upon neutral laws of general applicability that coincidentally burden the free exercise of religion. To relieve or minimize this burden, however, lawmakers are generally free to promulgate exemptions from, or accommodations to, such laws for the benefit of religious adherents. Such accommodations are common.
When a law is not neutral with respect to religion, or when the law is not generally applicable, then it will be subject to the exacting test of strict scrutiny to the extent that it burdens the free exercise of religion. …
Targeting Children: Liability For Algorithmic Recommendations, Michal Lavi
Targeting Children: Liability For Algorithmic Recommendations, Michal Lavi
American University Law Review
We live in the algorithmic society, characterized by massive digital surveillance and data collection by private companies exploiting human information vulnerabilities for profit. The infrastructure of free expression translates into an infrastructure of digital surveillance. This model, dubbed “surveillance capitalism,” includes massive personalized algorithmic targeting that departs from human speakers, allowing a level of influence never witnessed before in scale, scope, or depth.
Personalized targeting can garner many benefits, as it allows individuals to find content that interests them without needing to invest energy in seeking out that content. However, personalized targeting can also cause tremendous harm because it can …

Blacklisting Or Banning Technologies That Scare Us: Ai, Cryptocurrencies, And More, Nizan Geslevich Packin, Hadar Yoana Jabotinsky
American University Law Review
Policymakers often play a critical role in regulating the use and advancement of technology. Their decisions can have significant positive impacts on the development, adoption, and use of various technologies, but also negative ones if they decide to limit or even block a certain technology. Italy’s temporary banning of the Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) platform ChatGPT, much like New York City’s Department of Education, demonstrates administrations’ and policymakers’ reliance on blacklisting and banning.
Blacklisting and banning are often used interchangeably. Nevertheless, in the context of regulation, the terms are different and used for different purposes, and it is key to …

Securing Workers' Futures: Why Replacing Union Workers With Artificial Intelligence In Creative Professions Is The New Subcontracting, Katherine J. Kyriakoudes
American University Law Review
Artificial intelligence poses a significant threat to unionized professionals in creative industries, particularly as employers may be tempted to replace unionized workforces with artificial intelligence. However, Supreme Court precedent and the National Labor Relations Act paves a path forward for unionized workers in creative fields to safeguard themselves from job displacement through collective bargaining.
This Comment argues that replacing a unionized workforce with artificial intelligence is analogous to subcontracting under Fibreboard Paper Products Co. v. NLRB, First National Maintenance Corp. v. NLRB, and congressional intent behind the National Labor Relations Act. Consequently, artificial intelligence should be a mandatory subject of …
