The Hip Ontology: A Formal Framework To Support Disaster Risk Reduction And Management, Shirly Stephen, Mark Schildhauer, Krzysztof Janowicz, Kitty Currier, Pascal Hitzler, Cogan Shimizu, Colby K. Fisher, Dean Rehberger

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Open data initiatives and knowledge graphs, in synergy, have contributed to an increasing volume of disaster-related data in the Semantic Web. Synthesizing and enriching these data is critical to support all aspects of data-driven disaster risk reduction and management. A standard template that coherently defines, maps, and classifies the wide range of hazards to which communities are exposed is a key input for this task. The UNDRR-ISC Hazard Information Profiles (HIPs) provide evidence-informed standardization of hazard nomenclature and definitions and a “science-backed” classification. Unfortunately, they are not in a machine-readable format. This paper develops the HIP Ontology as its FAIR …

Integrating Contradictory Perspectives In Latin American Philosophy: A Multialism Approach, Maikel Yelandi Leyva Vázquez, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This study explores the integration of indigenous philosophies and postcolonial modernist theories within the framework of MultiAlism, highlighting the potential for dialogue and synthesis between these diverse philosophical traditions in Latin America. MultiAlism, a concept developed by Florentin Smarandache, is utilized to bridge the gaps and contradictions between these systems by focusing on areas of neutrality such as cultural diversity and power structure critiques. The research emphasizes the importance of incorporating both ancestral wisdom and modern critiques to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Latin America’s rich philosophical heritage. This integrative approach offers practical insights for developing inclusive policies …

A Review At Two Nuclear Reactor Problems In Asia, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The development of nuclear power plants (NPP) is often a heated debate, especially in developing countries [1]. In relation to this, it is worth the public's attention that lately, it seems that there have been increasingly frequent press releases from various parties representing the government regarding plans to build the first nuclear fission reactor in Indonesia in the not too distant future. Reportedly there will be a large amount of additional energy supply planned (around 100 GW to be built in Indonesia within the coming decade). For this reason, the authors would like to invite readers to take a moment …

Enforcing International Human Rights Law Against Corporations, Barnali Choudhury Jan 2024

Enforcing International Human Rights Law Against Corporations, Barnali Choudhury

All Papers

International human rights law is generally thought to apply directly to states, not to corporations since the latter is not a subject of international law. Some domestic courts are, however, enforcing these norms against corporations in domestic settings. Canadian courts have, for instance, recognized that corporations can be liable for breach of customary international law norms while UK courts have enforced international human rights norms indirectly against corporations relying on a combination of domestic corporate and tort law.

At the same time, some states are choosing to enforce international human rights norms against corporations using regulatory initiatives. These initiatives, known …

Legal Infrastructure For Inclusive Tech Development: Artificial Intelligence In The Global South, Jake Okechukwu Effoduh, Kingsley Eze, Victor Ufot Jan 2024

Legal Infrastructure For Inclusive Tech Development: Artificial Intelligence In The Global South, Jake Okechukwu Effoduh, Kingsley Eze, Victor Ufot

The Transnational Human Rights Review

Artificial intelligence (AI) is impacting economic and legal orders, yet its benefits and burdens remain unevenly distributed. This paper asks whether, and under what institutional and material conditions, the Global South can secure equitable participation in the AI economy. It advances a normative claim grounded in distributive justice, drawing on Rawls, the capabilities approach, and TWAIL critiques, arguing that bridging the AI divide is not a matter of charity but a duty of international cooperation under ICESCR Articles 2(1) and 15. Methodologically, the paper combines doctrinal analysis of international human rights law with comparative assessment across six constraint domains: energy, …

Commentary - Much Ado About Nothing? The Importance Of A Decolonial Framing Of The Withdrawal Of The United States Of America From The World Health Organization, Omowamiwa Kolawole Jan 2024

Commentary - Much Ado About Nothing? The Importance Of A Decolonial Framing Of The Withdrawal Of The United States Of America From The World Health Organization, Omowamiwa Kolawole

The Transnational Human Rights Review

The withdrawal of the Unites States from the World Health Organization (WHO) has been decried as bad for global health governance and the financing of the WHO. While there are legitimate concerns around the implications of this withdrawal, it is important that the action is framed through a decolonial lens. I argue that global health scholars must not replicate paradigms that problematize the withdrawal as a loss of the global north’s leadership in global health. I argue that the withdrawal offers an opportunity to interrogate the terms upon which global solidarity is built, and to push for the normative primacy …

Covid-19 Pediatric Vaccine Authorization, Fda Authority, And Individual Misperception Of Risk, Joanna K. Sax, Neal Doran

Faculty Scholarship

Vaccines are one component to the public health strategies to alleviate the COVID-19 pandemic. Hesitancy regarding COVID-19 vaccines in the United States has been problematic, which is not surprising given increasing overall vaccine hesitancy in recent decades. Most vaccines are administered during childhood years. Consequently, understanding hesitancy toward administration of vaccines in this age group may provide insight into possible interventions to reduce vaccine hesitancy. The present study analyzed a subset of over 130,000 public comments posted in response to a notice of meeting of the vaccine advisory group to the Food and Drug Administration. The meeting addressed whether to …

Interracial Friendships And Symptoms Of Depression And Anxiety Among College-Age Filipino Americans, Jenyse Rojo Jan 2024

Interracial Friendships And Symptoms Of Depression And Anxiety Among College-Age Filipino Americans, Jenyse Rojo

Global Public Health | Senior Theses

Background: There is little research on interracial friendships and Filipino American mental health. A previous study found that Filipino Americans are more likely to be depressed and anxious when having 3 or more non-Filipino close friends, and that friendship discord mediated this relationship. Studies that look at Filipino American mental health have also found that there is a relationship between colonial mentality and depression. In this study, we further examine the relationship between depression and anxiety and interracial friendships. We also examine the relationship between colonial mentality and friendship discord.

Methods: This study’s sample is taken in the San Francisco …

Participants were recruited using convenient sampling, then randomized into the intervention group and control group. Individuals self-reported demographics, baseline information and initial Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores using …

The Need For Corporate Guardrails In U.S. Industrial Policy, Lenore Palladino Jan 2024

The Need For Corporate Guardrails In U.S. Industrial Policy, Lenore Palladino

Seattle University Law Review

U.S. politicians are actively “marketcrafting”: the passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act collectively mark a new moment of robust industrial policy. However, these policies are necessarily layered on top of decades of shareholder primacy in corporate governance, in which corporate and financial leaders have prioritized using corporate profits to increase the wealth of shareholders. The Administration and Congress have an opportunity to use industrial policy to encourage a broader reorientation of U.S. businesses away from extractive shareholder primacy and toward innovation and productivity. This Article examines discrete opportunities within the …

Securities Regulation And Administrative Deference In The Roberts Court, Eric C. Chaffee Jan 2024

Securities Regulation And Administrative Deference In The Roberts Court, Eric C. Chaffee

Seattle University Law Review

In A History of Securities Law in the Supreme Court, A.C. Pritchard and Robert B. Thompson write, “Securities law offers an illuminating window into the Supreme Court’s administrative law jurisprudence over the last century. The securities cases provide one of the most accessible illustrations of key transitions of American law.” A main reason for this is that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is a bellwether among administrative agencies, and as a result, A History of Securities Law in the Supreme Court is a history of administrative law in the Supreme Court of the United States as well.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, three studies related to understanding and predicting recharge are presented. First, geospatial techniques were used to identify potential groundwater recharge areas in the High Plains Aquifer. Second, a precipitation generator was developed to produce site specific synthetic precipitation series that depend on daily precipitation occurrences, particularly on the distribution of wet spells for sites to be used in numerical modeling. Third, the unsaturated flow code VS2DI was modified to allow the simulation of chloride accumulation from recharge, and this model was used to evaluate errors in the Chloride-Mass-Balance (CMB) method for estimating recharge due to heterogeneity.
