Does Background Type And Blurring Affect Performance Ratings In Video Interviews?, Christina Scott, Nicolas Roulin Jan 2024

Does Background Type And Blurring Affect Performance Ratings In Video Interviews?, Christina Scott, Nicolas Roulin

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Asynchronous video interviews (AVIs) have become increasingly popular as alternatives (or complements) to more traditional face-to-face interviews. Yet, AVI research has been largely focused on applicant reactions or behaviors, and we still know very little about what influences how applicants are rated. Importantly, because AVIs afford applicants the flexibility to record their responses from their homes, the background they choose could influence raters’ judgments. This study examines whether raters’ (N=276 Prolific respondents with prior hiring experience) initial impressions and final ratings differ if applicants record their AVIs from a home-office, a bedroom, or use background blurring settings, as …

Enhancing Consistency Of Maximal Responding In Behavior Description Interviews: An Exploration Of Priming And Response Length, Allen I. Huffcutt, Satoris S. Howes, Dianne D. Murphy, Sara A. Murphy Jan 2024

Enhancing Consistency Of Maximal Responding In Behavior Description Interviews: An Exploration Of Priming And Response Length, Allen I. Huffcutt, Satoris S. Howes, Dianne D. Murphy, Sara A. Murphy

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

In a Behavior Description Interview (BDI), candidates are asked to describe past experiences that demonstrate skills and abilities important for the position (Janz, 1982). A recent study by Huffcutt et al. (2020) found that only around half of participants (48.1 percent) describe an experience reflecting maximal performance capability. Random mixing of maximal capability with day-to-day typical performance tendencies is problematic psychometrically because candidates are not all providing comparable information and top candidates could be overlooked. Given notable methodological concerns with Huffcutt et al.’s approach, our first purpose was to provide empirical confirmation that maximal responding in BDIs is, in fact, …

Animal Liberation Front: Threat To Kentucky, Zoe E. Hunt

Posters-at-the-Capitol

The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) is a global terrorist organization that was founded in 1976. Since the creation of ALF, the group has spread rapidly as well as turned into a domestic terrorist organization in the United States. With this project, the group's potential threat to Kentucky was evaluated. ALF was evaluated using four structured analytic techniques and an intelligence collection plan. A better understanding of what ALF is was formed by the discussion of the group’s origins, ideology, and organization. In addition, the group's goals, objectives, and capabilities were discussed. Using the information gathered during the threat profile, the …

Automated Model-Based Reorganization Of Speech-To-Text Transcripts, Stephane Martin, Erwan Zerhouni Jan 2024

Automated Model-Based Reorganization Of Speech-To-Text Transcripts, Stephane Martin, Erwan Zerhouni

Defensive Publications Series

Techniques are presented herein that support the automated reorganization of a meeting transcript. According to the presented techniques, when a meeting is recorded it is first transcribed through an automated speech-to-text system. Then, the resulting raw document is decomposed into sections corresponding to different topics, the topics are reorganized into a more coherent and intelligible structure, and missing pieces of information may be identified and then added to the document. Such postprocessing increases the intelligibility and value of meeting transcriptions and ensures that they remain understandable and useful over the long term. Aspects of the presented techniques may leverage large …

Techniques are presented herein that support a “copilot” for a command-line interface (CLI) in the form of a CLI-driven network assistant that may help a user through the automatic completion of a command; that may provide a one-line summary of the reasons behind a predicted command; and that may recommend expected commands and expected actions for the user, not only for the user’s current request but also considering the specific state of a network. Aspects of the presented techniques may leverage artificial intelligence (AI) technology and large language model (LLM) algorithms.

Risk For Diagnosis Or Treatment Of Mood Or Anxiety Disorders In Adults After Sars-Cov-2 Infection, 2020–2022, Christina X. Wang, Rhea Kohli, Veronica R. Olaker, Pauline Terebuh, Rong Xu, David C. Kaelber, Pamela B. Davis

Faculty Scholarship

COVID-19 is associated with increased risks for mood or anxiety disorders, but it remains uncertain how the association evolves over time or which patient groups are most affected. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using a nationwide database of electronic health records to determine the risk of depressive or anxiety disorder diagnoses after SARS-CoV-2 infection by 3-month blocks from January 2020 to April 2022. The study population comprised 822,756 patients (51.8% female; mean age 42.8 years) with COVID-19 and 2,034,353 patients with other respiratory tract infections (RTIs) (53.5% female, mean age 30.6 years). First time diagnoses of depressive or anxiety …

Thinking Backwards About Time, D. P. Sheehan Jan 2024

Thinking Backwards About Time, D. P. Sheehan

Physics and Biophysics: Faculty Scholarship

The concept of time in physics and its connection to consciousness are becoming increasingly problematic. A missing ingredient to both could be retrocausation — the temporal inverse of everyday causation — in which the future influences the past. Apparent evidence for it is in the phenomenon of precognition. Thus far, psychology and physics have assiduously avoided incorporating precognition into their paradigms, even though experimental evidence for it is substantial. Among many noteworthy studies, the Graff–Cyrus experiment is explicated here as an outstanding example of the phenomenon. It is hoped that consciousness, retrocausation, and precognition can be accommodated within the current …

Colloidal Calcium Phosphate (Ccp) Causes Problematic Acid Variation In Cheddar Cheese, Sakshi Singh

Research on Capitol Hill

pH variation in cheese during the early ripening stages causes changes in the texture, body, and flavor of cheese. The dairy industry, encompassing over 50,000 dairy farms nationwide and several regional dairy farmers and companies in Utah, suffers substantial financial loss as cheese with varying pH is rendered mostly useless.

Can Algorithms And Urban Greening Repair Historic Injustice?, E. Paige Sargeant

Research on Capitol Hill

In Baltimore, a vacancy crisis and continuing impacts of historical ‘redlining’ that discouraged investment in minority neighborhoods prompted city officials to use an algorithm generated Housing Market Typology (HMT) map to guide municipal service distribution. The current strategy channels maintenance to wealthier areas and prioritizes tree-planting and demolitions in struggling areas.

Self-Efficacy, Grit, And Rural Career Aspirations Among Early Career Nurses: A Repeated Cross-Sectional Study, Daniel Terry, Blake Peck, Ed Baker, David Schmitz

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background Global nursing workforce shortage represents an impediment to the delivery of safe, evidence-based healthcare. Despite collective efforts, a consistent stream of nurses leaving the profession remains, particularly within the first five years of practice, which is exacerbated in rural communities. The aim of the study was to compare self-efficacy, grit, and rural career aspirations among nursing graduates between their second and fourth year of their nursing profession.

Methods As part of a longitudinal investigation, a repeated cross-sectional design was utilised. Participants included, 117 (response rate 52.2%) who completed an online questionnaire 18–24 months after graduating, and 32 participants (response …

The Prisma Statement In Enviropreneurship Study: A Systematic Literature And A Research Agenda, Muath Maqbool Albhirat, Aamir Rashid, Rizwana Rasheed, Shahid Rasool, Siti Nur Atikah Zulkiffli, Hafiz Muhammad Zia-Ul-Haq, Al Montaser Mohammad

Publications and Research

As environmental awareness takes centre stage in business, entrepreneurship research has established a dedicated subfield for sustainability-driven ventures. The growing emphasis on sustainable business practices has led entrepreneurship research to identify entrepreneurship-related sustainability as a critical subfield. However, the inconsistent terminology used, such as “green entrepreneurship,” “ecopreneurship”, and “entrepreneurship” (ENP), reflects the fragmented nature of research in this area. A Systematic Literature Review on entrepreneurship-related sustainability was conducted to address this, focusing on the term “enviropreneurship” and applying PRISMA guidelines for transparency and methodological standardization. A total of 67 research articles published between 2013 and 2022 were analyzed to identify …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Understanding the global impact of offshore wind farms (OWF) on biodiversity and ecosystem services (ES) is crucial in developing sustainable energy transition pathways. This study takes a holistic approach, coupling a semi-systematic review with a novel analytical methodology, to consider the consequences of construction & operation of OWF deployment on biodiversity and ES. 314 pieces of evidence taken from 132 peer-reviewed studies provide the basis to determine the ecological and ES impacts. The process showed that construction impacts were predominantly negative across the ecological subject groups (52%), compared with positive impacts (8%) with several species of fish (e.g. brill, cod, …
