Electric Fields In The Atmosphere Might Help Snow Crystals Form, Joseph Cooney Jan 2024

Electric Fields In The Atmosphere Might Help Snow Crystals Form, Joseph Cooney

Research on Capitol Hill

Orographic clouds generally form over mountains when valleys are sunny. The unstable atmosphere can trigger clouds over the mountains, which can be convective. When this happens, the cloud particles (water droplets and ice particles) become charged, ultimately creating ice crystals. I wanted to evaluate the impact of electricity on the formation of ice crystals and built a computer simulation to do so.

Abstract

Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is an increasingly common treatment option for individuals with severe obesity, but utilization disparities remain with race and ethnic minority groups completing the procedure less frequently than non-Hispanic Whites. We examined the trends in MBS procedure types and prevalence of utilization by race and ethnicity among Florida inpatients.

Discharge records with any MBS using the International Classification of Diseases 9th or 10th edition Procedure Coding System (ICD-PCS), were extracted from the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) inpatients’ data (2006 to 2017). Those who completed either Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB), Sleeve Gastrectomy …

Introduction Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects approximately one in four individuals and its prevalence continues to rise. The advanced stages of NAFLD with significant liver fibrosis are associated with adverse morbidity and mortality outcomes. Currently, liver biopsy remains the 'gold-standard' approach to stage NAFLD severity. Although generally well tolerated, liver biopsies are associated with significant complications, are resource intensive, costly, and sample only a very small area of the liver as well as requiring day case admission to a secondary care setting. As a result, there is a significant unmet need to develop non-invasive biomarkers that can accurately stage …

Sphere-Graph: A Compact 3d Topological Map For Robotic Navigation And Segmentation Of Complex Environments, Meryl Spencer, Reid W. Sawtell, Sarah Kitchen

Michigan Tech Publications

Topological maps are a common framework for enabling autonomous robotic navigation. To be effective for robotic exploration the maps must be able to be generated quickly and compact enough to store on lightweight hardware. Here we propose a novel 3D topological map called Sphere-Graph which has adaptive edge lengths, can be quickly generated, and can be used to semantically identify hallways and rooms to produce a compact representation of complex environments. We give examples of the Sphere-Graph representation of large 3D urban and cave environments.
