Democratic Education As Expressed In Practice: An Integrative Literature Review, Rachel L. Wadham, Lynnette Christensen, Heather Leary
Democratic Education As Expressed In Practice: An Integrative Literature Review, Rachel L. Wadham, Lynnette Christensen, Heather Leary
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Despite a strong theoretical foundation, teachers’ pedagogical practices that represent the principles of democratic educational theory are not holistically understood. This qualitative integrative literature review provides a more complete view of the practices used by those who define themselves as democratic educators. By analyzing and integrating existing literature on classroom practice this review discusses four pedagogical approaches that engage democratic educational practices including inquiry, artistic, oral, and student-centered methods.

Evaluation Of Toxicity Of Lunar And Martian Regolith On Skin Microbiome-Relevant Bacteria, Makaila R. Olson, Noah Robbins, Helena Huyke, Hugo Castillo
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
The exploration and potential colonization of celestial bodies such as the Moon and Mars present unique challenges, one of which is understanding the toxicity of lunar and Martian regolith to the colonizers and to their microbiomes. Our study assessed the toxicity of regolith simulants on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis, commonly associated with human skin microbiome. For this purpose, various concentrations of simulants were added to E. coli and S. epidermidis cultures before incubation at 30 °C and 37 °C, respectively, with constant agitation at 200 rpm. Changes in the growth rates, viability, and biofilm development of our models were …

Comprehensive Review Of Distracted Driving Programs In The United States, Keenan P. Hubbard, Amelia K. Lawson, Nolan J. Metz, Kiara R, Meggit-Goff, Charles H. Hruda, Jacob D. Wilhelm
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
With advances in technology throughout the course of time, distracted driving is at an all-time high in the United States. Even with high numbers, distraction is likely underreported because the behavior is difficult to detect during crash investigation, and police reports likely understate its incidents. According to NHTSA’s newest analysis of 2021 fatal crash data, fatalities in distraction-affected crashes increased by 12% from 2020 to 2021, a total of 8.2% of all fatalities reported. The impact of distracted driving has recently worsened. A study estimated distraction was involved in 29% of all crashes by observing driver behavior in the real …

Airbus Financial Analysis - We Make It Fly, Jane Lam
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
The primary objective of this project is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of Airbus SE's (NBB: EADS Y) recent financial performance, with a specific focus on its business activities. Located in the Netherlands, Airbus was founded by Anthony Fokker in 1912 and went public on July 10, 2000. In our study, we will look at financial figures to make sense of alignment with business activities. After a disastrous period of the pandemic, Airbus rebounded in the financial year 2022, with a net income of 4.2 billion Euros, surpassing its pre-pandemic level of 3 billion Euros in 2018.
We will carry …

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to compare the prevalence of self-reported cardiovascular conditions among individuals with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) to a propensity-matched control cohort.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A cross-sectional study described self-reported cardiovascular conditions (hypertension, congestive heart failure [CHF], myocardial infarction [MI], and stroke) from participants who completed interviews between January 2015 and March 2020 in 2 harmonized large cohort studies, the TBI Model Systems and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Mixed-effect logistic regression models were used to compare the prevalence of cardiovascular conditions after 1:1 propensity-score matching based on age, sex, …

Chronic Stress-Induced Neuroinflammation: Relevance Of Rodent Models To Human Disease., Abigail G White, Elias Elias, Andrea Orozco, Shivon A Robinson, Melissa T Manners
College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
The brain is the central organ of adaptation to stress because it perceives and determines threats that induce behavioral, physiological, and molecular responses. In humans, chronic stress manifests as an enduring consistent feeling of pressure and being overwhelmed for an extended duration. This can result in a persistent proinflammatory response in the peripheral and central nervous system (CNS), resulting in cellular, physiological, and behavioral effects. Compounding stressors may increase the risk of chronic-stress-induced inflammation, which can yield serious health consequences, including mental health disorders. This review summarizes the current knowledge surrounding the neuroinflammatory response in rodent models of chronic stress-a …

Causal Inference In Ethnographic Research: Refining Explanations With Abductive Logic, Strength Of Evidence Assessments, And Graphical Models, Jeffrey G. Snodgrass, H. J. François Dengah Ii, Seth I. Sagstetter, Katya Xinyi Zhao
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
In their classic accounts, anthropological ethnographers developed causal arguments for how specific sociocultural structures and processes shaped human thought, behavior, and experience in particular settings. Despite this history, many contemporary ethnographers avoid establishing in their work direct causal relationships between key variables in the way that, for example, quantitative research relying on experimental or longitudinal data might. As a result, ethnographers in anthropology and other fields have not advanced understandings of how to derive causal explanations from their data, which contrasts with a vibrant “causal revolution” unfolding in the broader social and behavioral sciences. Given this gap in understanding, we …
