Introducing Online Dreamwork During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Method, Training, And Impact, Gregory Scott Sparrow, Yih-Jiun Shen, Marilu Pintor

Counseling Faculty Publications

In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the Counseling and Training Clinics of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) to shut down. Consequently, our graduate counseling program students needed help accruing the direct counseling hours required by their degree programs. Without an established telehealth option, the UTRGV Counseling Department supported the creation of DreamStar Free Online Counseling (DFOC), an online counseling program initiative facilitated through Zoom video. In response to our students’ urgent need for clients, we added individual and group dreamwork to DFOC’s array of services, increasing the referral level. This article describes the creation of DFOC, …

Kelley, Nathan M. Sharfman, Keishla Rodriguez-Graciani, Tiffany A. Wills, Nicholas W. Gilpin, Elizabeth M. Avegno

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Alcohol withdrawal is characterized by various symptoms that include pain and negative affect in the absence of the drug. The neural underpinnings of these behaviors are not entirely understood, but orexin has emerged as a candidate target for the treatment of substance use disorders. Here, we explored changes in orexin system-related gene expression in brain regions important for mediating reward and stress, including the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and extended amygdala (including the central amygdala, nucleus accumbens shell, and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis), in adolescent and adult female Wistar rats following chronic alcohol exposure. We observed higher numbers …

Chemically-Triggered Dopant Release From Surface Modified Polypyrrole Films, Grant A. Richter, Allen Knepper, Paul J. Molino, Timothy Hanks Apr 2025

Chemically-Triggered Dopant Release From Surface Modified Polypyrrole Films, Grant A. Richter, Allen Knepper, Paul J. Molino, Timothy Hanks

Chemistry Department Faculty Citations

Polypyrrole (PPy) is cationic in its conducting form, requiring a charge-balancing counterion, or dopant. The release of bioactive dopants, driven by the reduction of PPy films, offers a route to controlled drug delivery. Thiol-terminated long chain poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) reacts with a dodecylbenzene sulfonate (DBSA)-doped PPy, forming a dense overlayer and partially liberating DBSA via the chemical reduction of the film. The resulting PEG brush acts as a barrier to dopant diffusion from the film, but proteins have been shown to disrupt this layer, releasing the DBSA. The mechanism by which this disruption occurs has not been thoroughly investigated. …

A Geospatial Approach To Measuring Economic Activity, Anton Yang, Jianwei Ai, Costas Arkolakis Apr 2025

A Geospatial Approach To Measuring Economic Activity, Anton Yang, Jianwei Ai, Costas Arkolakis

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We introduce a new methodology to detect and measure economic activity using geospatial data and apply it to steel production, a major industrial pollution source worldwide. Combining plant output data with geospatial data, such as ambient air pollutants, nighttime lights, and temperature, we train machine learning models to predict plant locations and output. We identify about 40% (70%) of plants missing from the training sample within a 1 km (5 km) radius and achieve R2 above 0.8 for output prediction at a 1 km grid and at the plant level, as well as for both regional and time series …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Capacity building is critical for research and practice as the fields of dissemination, implementation and translation science continue to grow. Some scholars state that capacity building should be grounded in competencies. However, the fields are unclear in determining which competencies are relevant for whom, including the content and appropriate level of information and skills for different roles. The goal of this study was to catalogue competencies across current D&I capacity building initiatives.

Methods: We conducted a mapping review to examine to what extent are theories or frameworks used to guide capacity building, who is being trained, to what extent …

Religious Fundamentalism, Motivation, And Empathy Towards Sexual Minorities, Nora Martin Apr 2025

Religious Fundamentalism, Motivation, And Empathy Towards Sexual Minorities, Nora Martin

Honors Theses

In the United States, political and social opposition to sexual minorities is often associated with high religiosity — in particular, Christianity (Bjork-James, 2019; Toorn et al, 2017; Westwood, 2022). However, the relationship between religiosity and prejudice is complex, with religiosity being both positively and negatively associated with prejudice towards marginalized groups (Laythe et al., 2002; Liht et al., 2011). One aspect of religiosity that is correlated with prejudice against LGBTQ+ individuals is religious fundamentalism (Altemeyer & Hunsberger, 1992; Fisher et al., 2017; Laythe et al., 2002). Religious internalization, a related concept, assesses the degree to which an individual ‘adopts’ an …

Chimica et Natura Acta

Although COVID-19 is no longer a global health emergency, rapid, sensitive, and specific detection tests are still needed. In this study, we developed a cost-effective test, the SYBR Green-based rRT‒PCR kit, using new custom primers targeting the N and NSP10 genes of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The specificity of the designed primers was determined through agarose gel electrophoresis. A standard curve generated from a ten-fold dilution of SARS-CoV-2 RNA was used to determine the efficiency and sensitivity of the kit. Validation of this protocol was carried out on ten clinical specimens. As expected, the results showed that the N and NSP10 …

Oral Hygiene And Cardiovascular Health, Md. S. Zaman, S. M. Golam Alam, Mohammed S. Razzaque Apr 2025

Oral Hygiene And Cardiovascular Health, Md. S. Zaman, S. M. Golam Alam, Mohammed S. Razzaque

School of Medicine Publications

The human oral microbiome plays a vital role in maintaining oral and systemic health. This diverse microbial community includes over 700 bacterial species, some of which are implicated in developing systemic diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Research highlights a strong association between periodontal disease and increased cardiovascular risk, suggesting that good oral hygiene practices may reduce the incidence of CVDs. Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum drive chronic inflammation in periodontal disease; these bacteria can extend beyond the mouth and contribute to systemic inflammatory responses. The inflammatory factors, including C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukins (IL-1, IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), damage …

Measures Of Verbal Comprehension Patterns In Autistic Females, Savanna Leigh Parady

Theses and Dissertations

Although a rapidly growing body of scientific literature is leading to more understanding of autistic traits in women and girls, their diagnosis continues to occur at later ages. Diagnosis received at later ages limits access to early intervention and related positive outcomes. The purpose of this study was to add data to the weight of evidence approach in differential diagnosis of autism in females and other underserved groups. Specifically, I set out to identify patterns between verbal comprehension tasks measuring vocabulary knowledge (crystallized knowledge) and analogous verbal comprehension (similarities) tasks drawing on additional cognitive abilities. Verbal analogy tasks measure knowledge …
