Biophysics Research Data

Eye lens a-crystallin has been shown to become increasingly membrane-bound with age and cataract formation; however, to our knowledge, no studies have investigated the membrane interactions of a-crystallin throughout the development of cataracts in separated cortical membrane (CM) and nuclear membrane (NM) from single human lenses. In this study, four pairs of human lenses from age-matched male and female donors and one pair of male lenses ranging in age from 64 to 73 years old (yo) were obtained to investigate the interactions of a-crystallin with the NM and CM throughout the progression of cortical cataract (CC) and nuclear cataract (NC) …

Unraveling The Impact Of Curricular Complexity On Graduation Time: A Causal Analysis In Higher Education, Ameer Slim Apr 2025

Unraveling The Impact Of Curricular Complexity On Graduation Time: A Causal Analysis In Higher Education, Ameer Slim

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

This study examines the causal relationship between program complexity and graduation time at UNM. While program complexity is recognized as a factor influencing student outcomes, its precise impact on graduation timelines remains underexplored. Using comprehensive cohort data, this study employs causal inference methods, including generalized propensity scores, to estimate the effect of complexity on time-to-degree. Findings reveal that higher program complexity extends graduation timelines, even after controlling for demographics and academic preparedness. Socioeconomic factors also play a role. Specifically, programs with more Pell Grant recipients and lower median high school GPAs tend to have lower complexity levels. These results provide …

Assessment Of A Textbook Affordability Initiative: A Framework For Measuring The Impact On Student Enrollment And Retention Outcomes, Katie Bishop, Omer Farooq, Andrew Swift, Stephen Craig Finlay

Criss Library Faculty Publications

The rising costs of textbooks have prompted widespread textbook affordability initiatives in higher education. Programs that reduce student costs and offer increased access have become an integral part of campus strategic planning initiatives. In this case study, we discuss the design, implementation, and assessment of an Affordable Content grant program at a medium sized, R2, urban university. The grant was awarded with a stipulation that the system-wide program will also be assessed. The assessment of the impact and efficacy of affordable course content initiatives requires quantitative strategies often outside academic librarians' expertise. To this end, we partnered with campus stakeholders …

Fraudulent Transfer Law And Sovereign Immunity: An Actual Abuse Of Federalism?, Kyle Beck Apr 2025

Fraudulent Transfer Law And Sovereign Immunity: An Actual Abuse Of Federalism?, Kyle Beck

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

After All Resort Group filed for bankruptcy, David Miller, its appointed trustee, sought to claw back tax payments the company had made on behalf of two of its principals to the IRS by arguing the payments constituted fraudulent transfers. Unlike a typical clawback action, however, the trustee brought this proceeding under Section 544(b), rather than the more common fraudulent transfer provision, Section 548, because § 544(b) permits the trustee to rely on state fraudulent transfer law—which has longer statutes of limitations than the federal fraudulent transfer provision. The Government challenged this action, arguing that recovery from the IRS was barred …

Two Neighbors Walk Into A Ballot Box A Soon-To-Be Lawyer’S Second Take On Jesus And 21st Century Politics, Trey Murphy

Undergraduate Theses

Although the overarching question of the thesis is "What party would Jesus register for in a 21st century election?", the goal is to teach Christians how to think about politics well. By critically analyzing scripture and four controversial issues that pervade politics, the thesis intends to detach the preconceived notions of our day and attach logically sound thinking to the minds and hearts of Christians who are politically active in the United States. The four issues that are tackled include the following: Same-sex marriage, abortion, immigration, and Just-War theory. Each chapter contains an argument for the Republican party and Democratic …

Activists On Board: Shareholder Activists And Their Influence On Firm Strategic Change, Eugene See Apr 2025

Activists On Board: Shareholder Activists And Their Influence On Firm Strategic Change, Eugene See

Management and Decision Sciences

The prevalence of shareholder activism has resulted in the placement of activist-appointed directors onto the boards of firms. Extant research on this phenomenon has taken a rational approach in examining how such directors bring about change but has not accounted for the behavioral implications associated with their placement on boards. Building on theory involving alignment and legitimacy at the team level, this paper adopts a behavioral approach in theorizing how the placement of activist shareholders themselves as directors onto the boards of firms brings about firm change. The study finds that such activists lead to less firm change. Further, it …

A Non-Linear Optimization Model For Controlling The Real Area Of Contact In Surface Texture Design, Sandra Eksioglu, Min Zou

Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Motivated by the potential of surface texturing to enhance the tribological performance of micro- and nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS), this study proposes a novel non-linear optimization approach for designing textured surfaces. This model minimizes the contact area between interacting surfaces and deformation during sliding under dry conditions by controlling key design parameters, such as the size and shape of the designed surface. We test the performance of the proposed model using the lotus leaf surface with dimensions of 248 x 136 micrometers. Due to the large size of the model, we propose a solution approach which consists of a data aggregation …

Stoicism As A Panacea For Contemporary Problems, Taiwo Oriyomi Akande Apr 2025

Stoicism As A Panacea For Contemporary Problems, Taiwo Oriyomi Akande

LSU Master's Theses

The contemporary world is battling with the persistent problems of racism and environmental crises that threaten human co-existence and constitute an existential threat in general. These pressing issues have led to injustice, disunity, and ecological destruction. Though human history has recorded some victories in the advancement of human rights and environmental policies yet, there are still some forms of racism that are entrenched in society's structure. Environmental degradation also continues due to the failure or limitation in policies meant to tackle it, and the unsustainably bad attitudes of humans toward the environment. This thesis argues that Stoicism, a philosophical tradition …

Growing The Good: A Communal Garden Case Study Among Marginalized, Rural Populations, Claire Barbier Apr 2025

Growing The Good: A Communal Garden Case Study Among Marginalized, Rural Populations, Claire Barbier

LSU Master's Theses

Community and Communal gardens (CG) have been documented as early as the late 1800s during periods of economic recessions and high food insecurity (The MIT Press Reader, 2022). However, C.G. adoption rates are expanding on a global scale as communities and municipalities see the potential for the tool to bring relief to environments in dire need of additional resources. Utilizing a communal garden can be used to address a surplus of systemic barriers a community faces; it has a significant opportunity to bring forth the interconnected tiers of public health altogether (Twiss et. al, 2003). Modernized C.G projects bring forth …

Using Oer To Champion Dei Amid Anti-Dei Legislation, Nancy A. Henke

About OER

As anti-DEI legislation spreads and the February 2025 “Dear Colleague” letter from the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights deems DEI programs federally unlawful, faculty—particularly contingent instructors—may self-censor DEI discussions out of concern for job security. This lightning talk examines how OER librarians can support faculty in navigating these challenges by leveraging adaptable Open Educational Resources (OER) and open pedagogy to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Empowering Local Water Resources Managers With Global Hydrological Model Information Through Bias Correction Of Their In-Situ Data Using Saber, Yubin Baaniya

Theses and Dissertations

There is an increase in the frequency and intensity of water related natural disasters driven by climate change and human activities. While satellite data provides extensive coverage of many climatic variables, streamflow monitoring remains inadequate for effectively responding to water-related hazards, particularly in developing regions that lack integrated gauge networks. This study evaluates how incorporating local streamflow gauge data enhances bias correction of the GEOGLOWS Hydrologic Model (RFS) in gauged and ungauged basins using the Stream Analysis for Bias Estimation and Reduction (SABER) method. We analyzed approximately 19,200 gauge stations globally, using machine learning, spatial analysis and Flow Duration Curve …
