Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) – enhanced behavior therapy (A-EBT) is the most empirically supported treatment for trichotillomania. The data supporting A-EBT for excoriation disorder (skin picking) is small but growing. In this paper we review the model behind A-EBT including support for targeting psychological inflexibility as well as the use of more traditional behavioral procedures to reduce non-focused behaviors. To date there are 15 studies investigating A-EBT for trichotillomania and skin picking across ages and treatment delivery methods (individual, group, telehealth, and asynchronous web-based delivery). The work has occurred by multiple research teams. Data on process of change is …

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), despite having a low mutational burden, is considered immunogenic because it occasionally undergoes spontaneous regressions and often responds to immunotherapies. The signature lesion in ccRCC is inactivation of the VHL tumor suppressor gene and consequent upregulation of the HIF transcription factor. An earlier case report described a ccRCC patient who was cured by an allogeneic stem cell transplant and later found to have donor-derived T cells that recognized a ccRCC-specific peptide encoded by a HIF-responsive endogenous retrovirus (ERV), ERVE-4. We report that ERVE-4 is one of many ERVs that are induced by HIF, translated …

Tenants alleged a fraudulent scheme by landlord to deregulate rent-stabilized units without lawful justification, citing unexplained rent spikes unsupported by Major Capital Improvements (MCIs) or Individual Apartment Improvements (IAIs). Landlord failed to rebut with documentation, triggering the use of DHCR's default formula. Applying recent amendments to the Rent Stabilization Law mandating a return to Thornton and Grimm, the court found a colorable claim of fraud and ruled apartments 2J, 3D, 4C, and 5J were unlawfully deregulated. The court ordered declaratory and injunctive relief, including the issuance of proper rent-stabilized leases. Practice Note: Under amended rent laws, courts may examine the …

Application Of Science And Technology Studies To Global Medical Device Donation Policy, Jolie Crunelle
Application Of Science And Technology Studies To Global Medical Device Donation Policy, Jolie Crunelle
Theses
In low and middle income countries, the World Health Organization estimates that nearly 80% of medical devices and equipment are procured through donation (WHO 2000). While these donations have the potential to play a critical role in the recipient communities’ health, the donated devices sometimes fall short of their potential due to improper use or lack of support—despite the existence of a variety of guidelines and regulations for medical equipment donations. While conducting volunteer biomedical equipment technician work in Guatemala and Uganda, I came to notice the disparity between the guidelines and the reality on the ground. This study aims …

Exploring The Impact Of Social Media And Social Networks On Juvenile Sexual Behavior Problems: A Scoping Review, Shaleen Clay
LSU Master's Theses
The issue of juvenile problematic sexual behavior has become a pervasive problem, and little research exists on the topic. How social media and social networks impact problematic sexual behaviors in juveniles is even less known and understood. The objective of this scoping review was to determine what is known about the impact of social media and social networks on juvenile sexual behavior problems. Four key themes appeared in the literature including the use of adult terminology, rather than juvenile, to describe juvenile relationships; the normalization of abusive behaviors within adolescent relationship; the influence of social networks/peer groups on aggression and …
Faith And Freedom: The Role Of Religion In The Bishops' Wars, Christopher S. Jordan
Faith And Freedom: The Role Of Religion In The Bishops' Wars, Christopher S. Jordan
LSU Master's Theses
Despite their overall importance to British history, the Bishops’ Wars (1639-1640) remain relatively obscure conflicts. They are more often studied and recognized in larger narratives, such as the English Civil War or the Covenanting movement in Scotland. Regardless, these wars perhaps deserve more attention in themselves to recognize their significance in their own time. While most historians and commentators on this war have noted the many political aspects and undertones of this conflict, which there are many, this thesis will examine the religious aspects and undertones and attempt to argue that religion that had the largest role in the start, …

Breaking The Synaptic Vesicle Cycle: Mechanistic Insights Into Presynaptic Dysfunctions In Epilepsy, Kevin Jiang, Lu-Tang Yang, Mingshan Xue
Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications
Synaptic dysfunction is a hallmark of many neurological disorders including epilepsy. An increasing number of epilepsy-causing pathogenic variants are being identified in genes encoding presynaptic proteins that affect every step of the synaptic vesicle cycle, from vesicle loading, tethering, docking, priming, calcium sensing, fusing, to recycling. These different molecular dysfunctions result in converging impairment of presynaptic neurotransmitter release, yet lead to diverse epileptic disorders. This review focuses on representative monogenic epileptic disorders caused by pathogenic variants of key presynaptic proteins involved in different stages of the synaptic vesicle cycle: SYN1 (vesicle pool regulation), STXBP1 (vesicle docking, priming, and fusion), and …

The CDKL (cyclin-dependent kinase-like) family consists of five members in humans, CDKL1-5, that encode serine-threonine kinases. The only member that has been associated with a Mendelian disorder is CDKL5, and variants in CDKL5 cause developmental and epileptic encephalopathy type 2 (DEE2). Here, we study four de novo variants in CDKL2 identified in five individuals, including three unrelated probands and monozygotic twins. These individuals present with overlapping symptoms, including global developmental delay, intellectual disability, childhood-onset epilepsy, dyspraxia, and speech deficits. We also identified two individuals with de novo missense variants in CDKL1 in the published Deciphering Developmental Disorders (DDD) and GeneDx …

ADAR1 regulates RNA-induced immune responses by converting adenosine to inosine in double-stranded RNA. Mutations in ADAR1 are associated with human autoimmune disease, and targeting ADAR1 has been proposed for cancer immunotherapy. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying ADAR1-mediated editing remain unclear. Here, we provide detailed biochemical and structural characterizations of human ADAR1. Our biochemical profiling reveals that ADAR1 editing is both sequence and RNA-duplex-length dependent but can well tolerate mismatches near the editing site. High-resolution ADAR1-RNA complex structures, combined with mutagenesis, elucidate RNA binding, substrate selection, dimerization, and the essential role of RNA-binding domain 3. The ADAR1 structures also help explain …

Abstract
Intercollegiate athletics generate significant interest in the United States, where concerns about the health and well-being of student-athletes have gained increased attention in recent years. Student-athletes face the same developmental challenges as their non-athlete college peers, but they also encounter biological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual challenges often introduced or exacerbated by their participation in sport. To assist this subgroup of the college student population in managing their various athletic, academic, and personal responsibilities, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has prioritized and implemented life skills programming. Yet, while much has been documented regarding life skills development at the youth …

"I Know Who I Am": Draw-And-Tell Conversations With Gender-Creative Children, Eline Leemans Lenne
Dissertations and Theses
A growing number of children identify in various gender-creative ways, likely due to broader social awareness and affirmation of transgenderism. Gender-creative children face higher risks for adverse social, academic, mental health, and healthcare outcomes compared to non-transgender peers. Support from loved ones along with guidance from pediatric providers can mitigate poor outcomes and ensure that gender-creative children live healthy and happy lives. Young gender-creative children's perspectives about the aforementioned topics are markedly absent from the literature, which instead highlights adolescent and adult proxy perspectives.
In this participatory arts-based study anchored by a constructivist epistemology and informed by post-structuralist, queer, and …

BACKGROUND: Capacity building is critical for research and practice as the fields of dissemination, implementation and translation science continue to grow. Some scholars state that capacity building should be grounded in competencies. However, the fields are unclear in determining which competencies are relevant for whom, including the content and appropriate level of information and skills for different roles. The goal of this study was to catalogue competencies across current D&I capacity building initiatives.
METHODS: We conducted a mapping review to examine to what extent are theories or frameworks used to guide capacity building, who is being trained, to what extent …

Through The Looking Glass: Reflecting On The Roles And Expectations Between Graduate Students And Their Adviser In Making Meaning Out Of Feedback, Bruce Bowles Jr., Jakob Davis, Felicia Juliano
Journal of Response to Writing
Within response scholarship, although there is some literature addressing response in the context of thesis projects, the student perspective is notably absent. This article brings the students’ perspectives into focus as it is collaboratively written by three thesis students and their adviser. Three main findings are presented discussing the relationship between the thesis adviser and student and the feedback provided throughout the process. First, context plays a critical role in the manner in which the relationship is viewed by both the thesis adviser and student, with factors such as age, prior coursework and supervision of the student, the thesis adviser’s …

Exit Strategy: How Methods Of Gaining Independence From European Colonial Powers Impact Development In Post-Colonial African Nations, Sophia Wehle
Undergraduate Student Symposium
How does the way a colony gains independence from its power impact that colony’s future development? It is well documented that being a former colony has an impact on how a nation develops once they are independent, however, what is not clear is if a nation’s development is impacted by the way they separate from their colonial power. This paper argues that there is a correlation between the way a colony gains their independence and how developed they are. For the sake of this research three main ways of gaining independence will be considered: though violent resistance, peaceful negotiations, or …

Streptomyces are filamentous, Gram-positive bacteria in the phylum Actinobacteria that are known to produce a diverse array of antimicrobial metabolites. A Streptomyces murinus strain SPC1, contains a 15- gene biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC) that produces an antifungal metabolite ‘pentamycin’ (fungichromin), and is shown to exhibit antimicrobial activity against fungal pathogens of palms1. Using SPC1 strain as a reference, we analyzed the conservation of BGCs across 17 other S. murinus strains. A specialized bioinformatics analysis tool, antiSMASH2 , was used to identify and annotate BGCs that produce pentamycin. Pairwise comparison of the 15 genes comprising the pentamycin cluster …
