Enduring Words: Resistance Through Sculptural Libraries, Alex C. Jacobs
Enduring Words: Resistance Through Sculptural Libraries, Alex C. Jacobs
LSU Master's Theses
Enduring Words: Resistance Through Sculptural Libraries is a thesis exhibition that challenges book censorship by transforming reading into a public and defiant act. Through direct sculptural interventions, the exhibition confronts cultural erasure, questions who controls the literature we consume, and highlights the role of art in safeguarding contested knowledge. This thesis focuses on a current body of exhibited sculptural works that embody the tension between access and erasure. These installations engage with the viewer by using a lighthouse built of books and a speech-bubble-shaped library embedded with censored texts. They do not quietly mourn the suppression of knowledge; they confront …
Exploring Sense Of Belonging Among Neurodivergent Students In Higher Education, Mollie Rubinstein
Exploring Sense Of Belonging Among Neurodivergent Students In Higher Education, Mollie Rubinstein
Theses and Dissertations
Positive academic experiences for university students are hard to come by when non-academic experiences are negative (Gidley et al., 2010; Sandhu et al., 2022; Tinto, 1975). This issue has become increasingly important for neurodivergent students in higher education as more of this population is enrolling in university (Cox et al., 2002; Edwards et al., 2022; Gurbuz et al., 2018; Lubin & Brooks, 2021; Izzo et al., 2008; Mamiseishvili & Koch, 2011; Yssel et al., 2016). The purpose of this study is to listen to neurodivergent student voices to learn about their university experience and sense of belonging. Research questions include: …
Reservation Century: The Use Of Reservations From The League Of Nations To The Genocide Convention, Emily Zekan Brown
Reservation Century: The Use Of Reservations From The League Of Nations To The Genocide Convention, Emily Zekan Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the twentieth century practice of using reservations, understandings, and declarations to undermine international treaties, specifically the League of Nations and the Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Senators first attempted to attach reservations to the Treaty of Versailles after World War I in response to the proposed League of Nations. The concerns raised in the 1910s regarding sovereignty, domestic jurisdiction, and the rights of American citizens were repeated when the Genocide Convention was proposed in 1948. The Senate refused to pass the Genocide Convention until the 1980s …

Chronic pain following peripheral nerve injury is accompanied by increased neuronal activity in the somatosensory cortex. However, whether and how cortical microglia contribute to these changes is less understood. To this end, we applied an optogenetic strategy to specifically target cortical microglia and investigate their function in behavioral pain sensitization. We found that optogenetic activation of microglia in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) via red-activated channelrhodopsin (ReaChR) triggered pain hypersensitivity and affective-motivational responses in mice. Remarkably, S1-targeted optogenetic stimulation increased microglial landscape changes and ATP release. In addition, optogenetic stimulation altered the microglial proteomic profile, upregulated neuronal c-Fos expression, and …

Mechanical Design Procedure And Modelling For 8-Dof Upper Limb Rehabilitation Robotic, Mohanad Al-Asady, Ayad Murad Takhakh
Baghdad Science Journal
Treating muscular medical injuries that impede movement of the human body has become of wide interest because of the importance it holds for improving the lives of people who are exposed to this type of injury. During the past years, several studies have attempted to create a robot that works to rehabilitate the injured upper limbs of the human body. In this research, a curriculum for the procedures will be developed for designing a medical robot by displaying the volumetric tolerances for this robot according to the age and weight of the injured person and the weight and volumetric constants …
Consumer (Mis)Understanding Of Dietary Supplement Labels, Jason Iuliano, Madison Kilbride
Consumer (Mis)Understanding Of Dietary Supplement Labels, Jason Iuliano, Madison Kilbride
Texas A&M Law Review
“Helps lower cholesterol levels” and “helps promote healthy cholesterol levels.” Both of these claims are found on pharmacy products. And to ordinary consumers, the message is the same: take this pill and improve your cholesterol. Nevertheless, Congress has placed these statements in two very different regulatory categories. The former is classified as a disease claim, and the latter as a structure/function claim. Whereas products making disease claims require years of clinical trials and analyses before regulatory approval can be granted, products making structure/function claims do not even require governmental review before they can be sold to consumers. This bifurcated regulatory …
Culpable Kids, Cara H. Drinan
Culpable Kids, Cara H. Drinan
Texas A&M Law Review
When a child commits a crime, how do states determine if that child is culpable? There are procedural rules that determine the forum for a minor’s trial and doctrines that limit children’s exposure to the most severe sentencing. But when it comes to culpability, states employ the same substantive law whether the defendant is 50 or 15. As this Article explains, that approach is profoundly flawed. In the early 21st century, in a series of cases known as the Miller trilogy, the United States Supreme Court established that youth are fundamentally different from adults and state sentencing practices must recognize …

The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act Should Be Updated To Recognize Remote Courtroom Appearances, Hon. William G. Montgomery, Hon. Gerald A. Williams
Texas A&M Law Review
Allowing military members to continue pending civil litigation so that they can focus their attention on warfighting is sound public policy. Most agree we should protect those “who dropped their affairs to answer their country’s call,” and various federal laws have codified that protection for over a century. But what if the civil matter is com- paratively minor or could otherwise be easily resolved? While the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (“SCRA”) provides essential protections against harassing civil litigation, it should still pro- vide for the ability of deployed personnel to remotely resolve matters. Virtually every military member can easily be …
The Nih-Moderna Public-Private Partnership: A New Contractual Model For Securing Innovation, Karen Sandrik
The Nih-Moderna Public-Private Partnership: A New Contractual Model For Securing Innovation, Karen Sandrik
Texas A&M Law Review
The public–private partnership between the National Institutes of Health (“NIH”) and Moderna was considered “one of the few bright spots of the pandemic.” Yet as the NIH–Moderna collaboration progressed at an unprecedented pace, going from vaccine development to FDA authorization in nine months, cracks began to appear in the partnership. Public trust in vaccinations wavered, multiple patent disputes arose, and global frustration erupted over Moderna’s lack of commitment to equitable access to the vaccine that was largely paid for by U.S. taxpayers. This Article argues that the parties’ contractual agreements did shockingly little to support or, indeed, set up the …
Dialing In Or Dialing Out? The Relationship Between State Telemedicine Law And Access To Buprenorphine, Stacey A. Tovino
Dialing In Or Dialing Out? The Relationship Between State Telemedicine Law And Access To Buprenorphine, Stacey A. Tovino
Texas A&M Law Review
This Article begins by reporting the results of a comprehensive 50-state survey assessing state laws and other state sources governing the telemedicine induction (“tele-induction”) and subsequent telemedicine prescription (“tele-prescription”) of buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder (“OUD”) following the expiration of the COVID-19 public health emergency (“PHE”). Original, concrete findings include: (1) the glaring patchwork of state law governing the tele-induction and subsequent tele-prescription of buprenorphine for the treatment of OUD in the United States; (2) the variety of primary authorities and secondary sources that house relevant permissions, prohibitions, and affiliated requirements; (3) the number of primary authorities …
Reviving Exclusion, Leo Yu
Reviving Exclusion, Leo Yu
Texas A&M Law Review
Over a century ago, 15 states enacted alien land laws designed to deprive Japanese immigrants of property rights. It took half a century for these laws to be repealed. Today, alien land laws are experiencing a strong revival in America. Twelve states have enacted new versions targeting the Chinese community, with seventeen states preparing to follow suit. This Paper provides a comprehensive analysis of this revival, tracing its legal roots to early 20th-century Supreme Court cases that upheld the constitutionality of the old alien land laws. These cases, referred to as “zombie cases,” remain on the books despite being irreconcilable …
The National Bioengineered Foods Disclosure Standard & Absence Claims: The Cost Of The Butterfly, Cahlen Cheatham
The National Bioengineered Foods Disclosure Standard & Absence Claims: The Cost Of The Butterfly, Cahlen Cheatham
Texas A&M Law Review
The National Bioengineered Foods Disclosure Standard (“NBFDS”) is a step in the right direction in providing a uniform labeling standard for genetically engineered organisms (“GEOs”) that meet the statutory definition of “bioengineered.” Importantly, the law provides a consensus that GEOs are safe and that labeling standards should be uniform across the United States. However, the law largely fails to settle the broader debate and the issues associated with GEO labeling. Namely, the NBFDS’s use of the term “bioengineered” causes additional confusion, and terms like “genetic modification” and “genetic engineering” remain ambiguous. Furthermore, the Final Rule promulgated by the U.S. Department …

Atrapado En Limbo: Fronteras, Anthropologists, And Translation In Contexts Of The Missing And Unidentified At The México-Us Border, Aliya M. Godoy
LSU Master's Theses
The Missing Migrants Project reports that in the past 11 years, 11,138 missing migrants have been recorded in the Americas, with 6,512 of those migrants situated at the México-United States (US) border (Migration Within the Americas, n.d.). The crisis of missing and unidentified migrants at the México-US border is a topic of great discussion in the field of anthropology, and specifically in discourses of humanitarian forensic anthropological work. This research addresses the crisis at the border, expanding on the scholarship of family agency and language barriers between Spanish-speaking communities and medicolegal actors by investigating the role of anthropologists …

Manila As Sophie’S World: Mapping Sites Of Wonder In Intramuros And Environs, Jovino De Guzman Miroy
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
This paper draws a philosophical heritage map of Intramuros and environs. The map includes several religious sites in Intramuros and two monuments of heroes outside the walls. The paper explains the reason for drawing such a map by, firstly, discussing the theory of place-based learning. Secondly, it will discuss the philosophical walk as a dialogue with the environment (nature and the city). A philosophical heritage map is also understood not only as a tour of sites associated with philosophers and the history of ideas but a movement along sites of wonder, rumination, contemplation, and critical thinking. As such, walking as …

Aging-Induced Increase In Top-Down Connectivity From Dlpfc To Sma/M1 And Decrease In Inter-Limb Motor Coordination During Standing Tasks, Jiahao Pan, Shuqi Zhang
International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
This study aimed to investigate the effects of aging on inhibitory control from the prefrontal cortex (PFC) to the motor cortices and inter-limb coordination during dual task standing. Participants performed single-task and dual-task standing. Ground reaction force, center-of-pressure, muscle activity, and cortical activation were measured. The older group showed a greater effective connectivity index from the intra-hemispheric dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC) to supplementary motor area (SMA) (right, p = 0.009; left, p = 0.003) and left DLPFC to right M1 (p = 0.020)than the young group across task conditions. Also, the older group had greater inter-tibialis anterior coherence at 15–35 …

A Circular Economy Framework For Reducing Construction Waste During The Design Process In Egyptian Architectural Design Firms, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Abeer Ahmed Kamel, Fatma Othman Alamoudy
Architectural Engineering
Purpose – Construction waste drivers, amplified by the linear economy model, contribute significantly to resource consumption and waste generation across various phases of the construction process. Recognizing the critical influence of the design process on these outcomes, this study aims to develop a framework integrating circular economy to reduce construction waste and promote sustainable practices during the design process within architectural design firms in Egypt.
Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative and quantitative research approach was used to accomplish four objectives. A comprehensive literature review explored the concepts of construction waste, the design process, the circular economy and Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy …
Corporate Governance Outside Wall Street, Gideon Parchomovsky, Asaf Eckstein
Corporate Governance Outside Wall Street, Gideon Parchomovsky, Asaf Eckstein
Texas A&M Law Review
Private companies far outnumber public ones but receive scant scholarly attention and little is known about their governance. The largest private companies are on par with public corporations in terms of their annual revenues, number of employees, and impact on the economy. At the same time, private companies are not subject to the reporting requirements that apply to public corporations. Furthermore, private companies are virtually free of all the other market forces that improve corporate governance. They need not comply with the governance norms that institutional investors impose on public corporations or worry about activist hedge funds intervening in their …

Beyond Methodology: Hungry Translation As A Yearning For Justice, Richa Nagar
Study of Women, Gender, & Sexuality: Faculty Publications
This essay emerges from an invited lecture that I delivered at the University of Amsterdam in 2024. My reflections include glimpses from three decades of journeying within and across diverse sites of knowledge-making: a farmers’ and workers’ movement, a theatre group and my classrooms. I ask: how do we move from the idea of remaking research to a transformational praxis through which we can co-create shared hungers for justice that refuse the borders among research, creativity, unlearning and relearning? I draw on my co-authored labours in Playing with Fire, Muddying the Waters and Hungry Translations to explore this question …
