“I Need To Borrow Some Money”: How Community College Students Of Color Experience Punitive Financial Aid Structured Disbursements, Devon L. Graves May 2025

“I Need To Borrow Some Money”: How Community College Students Of Color Experience Punitive Financial Aid Structured Disbursements, Devon L. Graves

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Community college students must navigate complex financial aid policies and procedures to obtain their aid award. In this study, I investigated how Students of Color at a community college experience financial aid disbursements. Through qualitative interviews, I found that community colleges disburse aid to students through a process I define as structured disbursements, which delays students’ receipt of their aid. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) to frame this study, I argue that racist notions about Students of Color with financial need influence how aid is disbursed in the community college sector, which ultimately harms these students. I provide recommendations for …

Pride Flags And Five-Headed Monsters: A Portrait Of A Transgender College Student's Experiences In Campus Housing, Andrew Bamford May 2025

Pride Flags And Five-Headed Monsters: A Portrait Of A Transgender College Student's Experiences In Campus Housing, Andrew Bamford

Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to develop an understanding of how transgender students experience living in on-campus housing and how these experiences affect their senses of wellbeing, inclusion, safety, and connection with their college. Additionally, this study solicits suggestions from its participant that can help campus housing departments identify ways to best serve their transgender student populations. Imperative due to the precarity suffered by the transgender community, especially during the notoriously anti-trans second Trump administration (Francois, 2025), this research focuses on transgender student experiences in housing due to the heightened vulnerability they experience in the confines of their on-campus housing assignments (Brauer, …

Some Studies On Information Set Decoding Algorithms And Universal Hash Functions, Sreyosi Bhattacharyya May 2025

Some Studies On Information Set Decoding Algorithms And Universal Hash Functions, Sreyosi Bhattacharyya

Doctoral Theses

This thesis presents some studies on Information Set Decoding algorithms and Universal Hash Functions. In the context of Information Set Decoding (ISD) the thesis studies time/memory trade-off of ISD algorithms and in the context of universal hash functions, the thesis studies design and efficient implementations of polynomial hash functions defined over prime order fields. A cornerstone of ISD algorithms is the algorithm proposed by Stern and it introduced the meet-in-the-middle collision search approach to ISD algorithms. Though this algorithm is more efficient in terms of asymptotic time complex- ity than the preceding algorithms proposed by Prange, Lee and Brickell and …

Solution Of Wave Equation By Linear Regression Artificial Neural Network, Nahdh S. M. Al-Saif, Mahmood A. Shamran, Samah Mohammed Ali, Saad Naji Al-Azzawi

Baghdad Science Journal

Wave partial differential equations are one of the most important topics that model, for example, the wave motion of ground vibrations. Hence, finding approximate solutions to such equations with high accuracy and speed faster than difficult and complex analytical solutions has become possible through the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods. This research has three goals. The first is to transform the problem of the initial value of the wave equation into its legal form and find its accurate solution. The second is to write a linear-regression neural network algorithm. The third result is applying this algorithm to …

Advancing Butterfly Systematics Through Genomic Analysis, Jing Zhang, Qian Cong, Jinhui Shen, Leina Song, Nick V. Grishin May 2025

Advancing Butterfly Systematics Through Genomic Analysis, Jing Zhang, Qian Cong, Jinhui Shen, Leina Song, Nick V. Grishin

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Within the framework of an ongoing comparative genomic study of global butterfly diversity, we construct phylogenetic trees combining all protein-coding genes assembled from the whole genome shotgun data. When viewed in the context of current taxonomy and phenotypic knowledge, the genome-wide phylogeny points to further advances in butterfly systematics, which are presented here. We assign major clades with comparable levels of genetic divergence to the same taxonomic rank and apply criteria involving relative population divergence and gene flow to define species boundaries. As a result, one genus, 13 subgenera, 62 species, and five subspecies are proposed as new (type species …

Teaching Transcription For Social Justice In Linguistic Anthropology, Thea R. Strand, Michael Wroblewski May 2025

Teaching Transcription For Social Justice In Linguistic Anthropology, Thea R. Strand, Michael Wroblewski

Anthropology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The careful transcription of socially-occurring speech can be usefully incorporated into undergraduate classes in linguistic anthropology through in-class practice, discussion, and, especially, as a formal assignment. Teaching transcription—a key method for professional linguistic anthropologists—is particularly effective for engaging students in active learning of key disciplinary principles, as well as promoting critical (self-)awareness of, and reflection on, sociolinguistic practice. As students’ written reflections on transcription assignments show, teaching close transcription contributes to deepened understandings of the fundamental characteristics and complexities of human speech, the key roles language plays in social interaction and inequality, and how they might apply these lessons toward …

Progress Towards The Asymmetric De Novo Synthesis Of Tetracyclic Triterpenoids: Cucurbitanes, Lanostanes, And Cardiotonic Steroids, Andrea Rachel Bucknam May 2025

Progress Towards The Asymmetric De Novo Synthesis Of Tetracyclic Triterpenoids: Cucurbitanes, Lanostanes, And Cardiotonic Steroids, Andrea Rachel Bucknam

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

The complex molecular scaffolds of tetracyclic triterpenoid natural products continue to inspire novel chemical reactions. Steroid-based drugs have contributed significantly to human health in the past century, demonstrating a broad range of therapeutic applications including anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer activities. However, the efficient and flexible synthesis of tetracyclic triterpenoids remains an unsolved problem. Despite numerous reports of medically relevant bioactivity associated with cucurbitanes, lanostanes, and cardenolides, exploration of their pharmaceutical promise has been limited by a lack of access to molecules bearing their requisite carbon frameworks. Prior to the initiation of my doctoral research, there were no reported syntheses of …

Conversational Theatre Rehearsals For English Language Education, Empowerment, And Healing, Jennifer Schaupp May 2025

Conversational Theatre Rehearsals For English Language Education, Empowerment, And Healing, Jennifer Schaupp

Theses and Dissertations

I set out to examine the history and current structure of the English-learning classroom, with a strong focus on adult learners in community-based classrooms, of immigrants, refugees, and more who arrive and make their home in the U.S. as well those born in the U.S. to multilingual homes. I incorporate elements of therapy and theatre, particularly improvisational comedy and Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, as points of comparison to the teachers and students of the classroom by way of Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed. I use the concept of rehearsal to compare the three disciplines of psychology, language …
