The Etiology Of A New Era: Where Heroes Become Zeros And Victims Become Villains, Traci Jo Harmon
The Etiology Of A New Era: Where Heroes Become Zeros And Victims Become Villains, Traci Jo Harmon
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The United States is in a state of turmoil. Unlike any time before this, division in the country is overtaking the COVID-19 pandemic as the biggest threat to life and liberty. Previous research is contradictive in identifying the etiology of anti-police rhetoric, anti-Christian rhetoric, and victim-blaming. The current research attempts to find out if mainstream and or social media is the etiology of the racial, religious, and victim division in The United States. Attitudes towards law enforcement, Christians, and victims were measured against platforms for current events, hours per day on mainstream and social media, age, gender, and race/ethnicity. Significant …
A Phenomenological Study Of Teacher Experiences With Implementation Of Crisis Prevention And Intervention In Military-Connected Schools, Rebecca Young Carmichael
A Phenomenological Study Of Teacher Experiences With Implementation Of Crisis Prevention And Intervention In Military-Connected Schools, Rebecca Young Carmichael
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental, phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of educators with classroom-based crises at military-connected schools and the crisis prevention and intervention training they have received. Knowles’ theory on adult education guided this study as it provides a useful framework for evaluating the provision and implementation of effective staff training. This qualitative study followed a phenomenological research design and involved 10 special education and general education teachers from military-connected schools. Sources of data included interviews, letters to new teachers, and a focus group. Data gathered was analyzed using the procedures of phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation, …

Mitigating School Violence Through The Lens Of School Officials In Southern States, Faith Derrick
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand the threats of school violence to children and school personnel employed in the South Central and Southeastern part of the United States and to identify strategies to mitigate these threats. The theory that guided this study was Clarke’s (2019) Situational Crime Prevention as it aims to improve the understanding of violence and the impact of potential strategies for the prevention of violence. Data for the thematic analysis were obtained directly from school personnel. The information from the findings could aid in understanding the process of threat assessment to determine if …
Learning Science: Physical And Life Sciences In Curricula Across U.S. Schools Of Nursing, Valerie C. Sauda
Learning Science: Physical And Life Sciences In Curricula Across U.S. Schools Of Nursing, Valerie C. Sauda
Dissertations
Nursing educators are being challenged to provide curriculum that meets the changing healthcare environment and demand for creative, innovative nurses to assist in transforming healthcare into the future (Benner, Sutphen, Leonard, & Day, 2010; Institute Of Medicine, 2011). The liberal education provided within a baccalaureate of science in nursing (BSN) degree program provides a diversity of courses within the curriculum, including courses in the natural, physical, mathematical, and social sciences (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2008). Although nursing programs have included science courses in curriculum since the early 1900s (Nutting & Dock, 1907), there is lack of nursing …
The Deep Ecology Movement
The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)
There are two great streams of environmentalism in the latter half of the twentieth century. One stream is reformist, attempting to control some of the worst of the air and water pollution and inefficient land use practices in industrialized nations and to save a few of the remaining pieces of wildlands as "designated wilderness areas." The other stream supports many of the reformist goals but is revolutionary, seeking a new metaphysics, epistemology, cosmology, and environmental ethics of person/planet. This paper is an intellectual archeology of the second of these streams of environmentalism, which I will call deep ecology.

Personal Life Security, Nonmonetary Benefits And Executive Compensation : Evidence From Stand Your Ground Laws, Zixuan Zeng
Personal Life Security, Nonmonetary Benefits And Executive Compensation : Evidence From Stand Your Ground Laws, Zixuan Zeng
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
People prefer an amenable location and companies have to pay a higher level of salary to their executives in a less livable place. Focusing on a particular aspect of livability, i.e. life security, we investigate whether life security condition in a region has an impact on CEOs’ compensation using the enactment of Stand Your Ground (SYG) laws in U.S. 26 states from 2003 to 2020 as an exogenous shock. SYG laws, which grant individuals the legal right to use lethal force in self-defense without the duty to retreat, have the potential to affect executives' perception of personal security and consequently, …

Promoting Positive Traffic Safety Culture In Riti Communities Through Active Engagement: Implementation Guide And Outreach Activities, Jacob Pehrson, Logan Prescott, Ahmed Abdel-Rahim
CSET Project Reports
RITI crash data analysis clearly highlights three major areas of concern: prevalence of excessive speed, impaired and distracted driving, and underage driving. Safety-focused educational programs and awareness campaigns have all contributed to a reduction in crashes in urban areas. However, in RITI communities, much more work is still needed. It is important that communities are provided with the proper resources and methods to deliver the appropriate training and educational tools that promote and cause a significant positive change in the traffic safety culture. Through reviewed literature and interviews with tribal community stakeholders, this research team came to understand that tribal …

Expressive Therapies Dissertations
Narrative and storytelling creates a formidable foundation for individuals to convey their lived experiences. Utilizing indigenous arts-based research (ABR), poetics as an inquiring and exploratory tool, and an ABR interviewing technique called poetic emergence by the researcher, this study asked two essential questions: What are the lived experiences of individuals in and outside of carceral states? Will these experiences reflect certain aspects of an individual’s life journey? The purpose of this study was to explore the embodied voices and lived experiences of adult Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC), diagnosed with mental health issues who were formerly incarcerated (n=3) …

Perception Of Crisis Management, Service Quality, And Loyalty Programs On Airline Travel Intention: What Roles Do Fear Of Covid-19 And Risk Attitude Play?, Sohel M. Imroz, Tamilla Curtis, Scott C. Ambrose
Publications
This research investigates the antecedents of airline travel intention, including the effects of crisis management, service quality perceptions, and loyalty programs, along with the fear of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and risk attitude among individuals from different parts of the world during the peak of the pandemic. Its main objective is to assess how these variables impact passenger airline travel intention. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to assess the measurement model and test the hypothesized relationships on the sample of 944 travelers. Results indicated strong positive associations between fear of COVID-19, risk-averse attitudes, and service quality with respect …

When Social Media Fails: Exploring Alternative Technologies For Effective Communication In Disasters, Safianu Omar, Jean-Paul Van Belle
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
Effective communication plays a critical role in disaster management, encompassing both data gathering and information dissemination. This study examines the utilization of alternative technologies for communication during disasters, aiming to address the vulnerabilities of relying solely on social media platforms. To answer the research questions, a qualitative methodology employing an inductive approach was used to gather and analyze data from literature and officers working in disaster management organizations. The research findings reveal the efficacy of employing SMS, emails, phone calls, and other supporting technologies as viable alternatives for disaster communication. These approaches have demonstrated their reliability to overcome challenges posed …

The Impact Of Community Engagement On Undergraduate Social Responsibility Attitudes, Daniel S. Schiff, Jeonghyun Lee, Jason Borenstein, Ellen Zegura
The Impact Of Community Engagement On Undergraduate Social Responsibility Attitudes, Daniel S. Schiff, Jeonghyun Lee, Jason Borenstein, Ellen Zegura
Department of Political Science Faculty Publications
The literature on student development cautions that social responsibility attitudes may stagnate or decline as students proceed through college. Given the importance of students’ future professional obligations to society, identifying ways to reverse this trend is crucial. In turn, an important aim of this study, situated at a large public university, is to evaluate the prospects of community engagement as a strategy to foster professional social responsibility development. The study uses longitudinal results from an instrument known as the Generalized Professional Responsibility Assessment (GPRA) to assess personal and professional social responsibility attitudes. The study’s sample includes 128 students who completed …

Keep Your Fingerprints To Yourself: New York Needs A Biometric Privacy Law, Brendan Mcnerney
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
Imagine walking into a store, picking something up, and just walking out. No longer is this shoplifting, it is legal. In 2016, Amazon introduced their “Just Walk Out” technology in Seattle. “Just Walk Out” uses cameras located throughout the store to monitor shoppers, document what they pick up, and automatically charge that shoppers’ Amazon account when they leave the store. Recently, Amazon started selling “Just Walk Out” technology to other retailers. Since then, retailers have become increasingly interested in collecting and using customers’ “biometric identifiers and information.” Generally, “biometrics” is used to refer to “measurable human biological and behavioral …

Post 9/11 Protection And Policies, Caleb Clayton, Alison Ringhiser
Critical Questions
Americans have had over two decades to reflect back on how the September 11th attacks shook our nation to its core. The psychological damage done to the American public had a drastic effect on attitudes toward responding to the threat of international terrorists targeting the United States and the potential for internal threats within their own communities. Being members of Gen Z, many of our generation only know the events of 9/11 and its aftermath in retrospect. With this in mind, we examined policies enacted under the Bush administration and their significance in response to 9/11, how they affected American …
