Monty Hall Problem: Will You Win A Car?, Tien Nguyen Chu
Osmosis Magazine
Suppose you’re on a game show. There are three closed doors. Behind one is a brand-new car; behind the other two, goats. You pick a door. The host, who knows what’s behind all the doors, opens one of the remaining doors to reveal a goat. Now you’re offered a choice: stick with your original door or switch to the other unopened one. What should you do? Will changing your choice increase your chances of winning the car - or or does it make no difference at all?

Balancing Privacy And Security: A Comparative Analysis Of Ai-Driven Surveillance In The Uae And Usa, Belal Alghafri, Abdallah Tubaishat
Balancing Privacy And Security: A Comparative Analysis Of Ai-Driven Surveillance In The Uae And Usa, Belal Alghafri, Abdallah Tubaishat
All Works
AI-driven surveillance has emerged as a critical tool for enhancing public safety, enabling authorities to monitor and prevent crime and terrorism more effectively. In countries like the UAE and the USA, these systems are often implemented under the pretext of national security, offering advanced methods to track potential threats. However, the increasing reliance on AI for surveillance raises significant ethical concerns about privacy and individual freedoms. The boundary between protecting citizens and infringing on their privacy becomes increasingly blurred, potentially leading to abuses of power, diminished public trust, and a pervasive atmosphere of fear. This paper explores the complex relationship …

Thompson’S Rifle Battalion: The Original Unit Of The Army Of The United Colonies (Now The United States Regular Army), John A. Bonin
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
©2025 John A. Bonin
Although 1775 is indisputably the birth year of the US Army, two events occurred on June 14 of that year to which the Army can credit its birthday. One is the adoption by the Continental Congress of the collective militia forces from several colonies outside Boston to form a Continental Army, of which Congress appointed George Washington the commander in chief on June 15, 1775. In addition, the US Regular Army officially dates its beginning to June 14, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress directed 10 companies of expert riflemen to be raised immediately in Pennsylvania, …

Incalculable Harm: Analyzing The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Immigration Detention In Canada, Efrat Arbel, Molly Joeck
All Faculty Publications
This paper reflects on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on immigration detention in Canada. Drawing on research spanning 2020 to 2022, we analyze how the pandemic impacted rates of detention, conditions of detention, and other related issues. Data released by the Canada Border Services Agency shows that despite an initial decrease in absolute numbers, Canada detained people at a higher rate after the onset of the pandemic than it did prior. Canada also held people for longer periods of time and relied more heavily on jails than dedicated Immigration Holding Centres. Conditions of confinement deteriorated significantly across all detention …

Honors Projects in Politics, Law, and Society
This paper thesis examines how the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL has influenced voting behavior within the affected community, specifically regarding candidate and policy preferences related to gun control, mental health support, and school safety. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study incorporates surveys and interviews to capture voters' opinions and attitudes in the aftermath of the tragic event. Public voter data is also analyzed to identify shifts in voting patterns and candidate support over time. The research aims to understand the magnitude to which the Parkland shooting has shaped voters' views and decisions, and whether …

Reimagining Discipline: Elementary School Counselors’ Experiences Implementing And Advocating For Restorative Practices As An Alternative To Exclusionary Discipline, Kim Kelly
Dissertations
School counselors are positioned as leaders and advocates within their school communities, playing a critical role in promoting equitable practices and systemic change. Despite decades of research indicating the harmful effects of exclusionary discipline, this approach continues to be implemented in schools across the United States. Emerging literature has indicated restorative practices as an alternative discipline approach that promotes equity, reduces disproportionality in school discipline, and fosters a positive school climate. This research focused on the experience of elementary school counselors advocating for and implementing restorative practices as an alternative to exclusionary discipline. Through a hermeneutic phenomenological and social constructivist …
Systematic Analysis On The Applications Of Infrastructure Asset Management In Utah, Kelvin Kozakevitch
Systematic Analysis On The Applications Of Infrastructure Asset Management In Utah, Kelvin Kozakevitch
Theses and Dissertations
Public infrastructure is essential to a region’s economic stability and quality of life, especially its rural infrastructure where most consumable and essential goods derive from. Given the high capital investment required for infrastructure development and maintenance, asset management plans (IAM) are critical. Even though academic research exists on the problems rural infrastructure management face, little is known about the actual state, barriers and causes for the challenges IAM faces in rural Utah. This study examines the current challenges and barriers in IAM among rural communities in Utah. Employing a grounded theory approach, data was collected through a two-phase methodology: phase …
Correctional Officer Stress: The Effects Of Supervising Mentally Ill Inmates, Samuel T. Akers
Correctional Officer Stress: The Effects Of Supervising Mentally Ill Inmates, Samuel T. Akers
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The work of correctional officers goes unnoticed and unappreciated even though the job is one of the most stressful and dangerous in the United States and worldwide (Pittaro, 2017). Correctional officers work with a population that has proven their propensity to commit offenses against others, such as assaults, rapes, and murders. Officers are on constant alert for threatened or realized personal attacks. Witnessing daily violence and mayhem causes work stress and adversity experienced by no other occupation, yet correctional officers’ occupation lacks research concerning stress on officers and how that stress negatively affects inmate supervision (Lambert et al., 2018). Without …
Perceptions Of Preparedness Regarding School Violence: A Qualitative Hermeneutical Phenomenological Study, Kirkham Moyle Burbidge
Perceptions Of Preparedness Regarding School Violence: A Qualitative Hermeneutical Phenomenological Study, Kirkham Moyle Burbidge
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study is to understand the school violence preparedness training perceptions of teachers in K-6 Utah schools. Bandura’s social cognitive theory guides this study by supporting knowledge via social connections and context-specific situations. The central research question was “What are the school violence preparedness training experiences of Utah K-6 school teachers?” Van Manen’s approach to researching lived experiences methodologically guides the qualitative study. Participants were K-6 elementary school teachers in Utah, recruited using purposeful and criterion sampling. Teachers were interviewed individually and in focus groups and invited to reflect on their training experience via protocol …
A Phenomenological Study Of The Perspectives And Experiences Of Male Military Spouses, Shannon Rene Goodwin
A Phenomenological Study Of The Perspectives And Experiences Of Male Military Spouses, Shannon Rene Goodwin
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Although there has been a significant decline in the armed services’ overall enlisted forces, the number of women enlisting has tripled over the last forty-plus years, with many women joining the reserved forces. In particular, the ratio of women in the United States National Guard is higher than that of men, 52.9% compared to 47.1%. With this large increase comes an increase in military family members, particularly children and male civilian spouses, in need of assistance, especially during deployments. This phenomenological study examines the male spouses’ lived experiences within the District of Columbia National Guard military community, identifying the needs …

Emergency Management Single Points Of Failure, Todd Alan Smith
Emergency Management Single Points Of Failure, Todd Alan Smith
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Disaster management begins and ends at the local level and encompasses every aspect of public administration. Emergency management practices using jurisdictional authority are central to protecting communities during incidents and events. Although contemporary emergency management plans, procedures, and policies are methodically developed over time, a single point of failure may cause preventable issues that result in a measurable loss of time, funding, or opportunity. A single point of failure can be any moment where a process, action, or detail was either overlooked or executed incorrectly and caused emergency management challenges. Fred Fiedler and William Scott’s descriptions of Contingency Theory, a …

Enhancing Animal Shelter Operations With Time Series And Machine Learning, Sakava L. Kiv, Donald L. Anderson, Shivam Negi, Jacquelyn Cheun
SMU Data Science Review
Enhancing animal shelter operations through machine learning involves employing a variety of advanced techniques aimed at increasing efficiency, promoting animal welfare, and optimizing resource allocation. This paper explores predictive analytics for adoption rates using regression models to estimate the likelihood of adoption based on historical data, encompassing variables such as breed, health status, and previous adoption trends. Additionally, classification algorithms are utilized to categorize animals by adoption probability, facilitating better resources and marketing prioritization. Clustering algorithms are employed to group animals according to behavior patterns and/or physical health, enabling tailored medical care and enrichment activities that improve their mental and …
Government-Backed Insurance For Artificial Intelligence Technologies, Renee Henson
Government-Backed Insurance For Artificial Intelligence Technologies, Renee Henson
Georgia State University Law Review
Artificial intelligence (AI) is an unpredictable technology that has the capacity to both help and harm people. Although insurance plays a key role in compensating for harms in other contexts, AI-produced damages evade traditional principles of risk pricing which limits viable commercial insurance coverage. AI requires modified insurance systems that can compensate diverse and unpredictable losses. Just like AI, at one time nuclear energy was viewed as a new and profitable, yet wholly unpredictable, technology that had the capacity to cause devastating harm. AI poses similar threats to society in certain domains, including, for example, health care (e.g., risk management …

Vigilante Justice Violence In Ghana: Does A Visible Police Force Reduce Support For Instant Justice?, John Ampomah
Vigilante Justice Violence In Ghana: Does A Visible Police Force Reduce Support For Instant Justice?, John Ampomah
Theses
Vigilante justice remains a persistent issue in Ghana, with a significant portion of Ghanaians subscribing to it to address their grievances. While existing research has examined the social and cultural drivers of vigilante justice in Ghana, the role of visible police presence (i.e., police station and police patrol) on vigilante justice has received limited attention. This study seeks to add to the literature by exploring the relationship between visible police presence and support for vigilante justice by drawing on Black’s (1983) Self-Help Theory. First, I argue that a visible police force directly reduces public support for vigilante justice and indirectly …
