The Impact Of Race On Sentencing Outcomes In The United States, Tijana Krivokapic
The Impact Of Race On Sentencing Outcomes In The United States, Tijana Krivokapic
Honors Theses
The United States, with just 5% of the world’s population, houses nearly a quarter of the world’s prisoners. Moreover, the racial composition of the United States prison population is 56.8% White, 38.0% Black, 2.9% Native American, and 1.5% Asian (Federal Bureau of Prisons, 2023). This highlights the disproportionate presence of minority offenders in the prison system, prompting concerns about racial disparities in sentencing. While research on sentencing is robust, much of the research relies on outdated data sources. This study adopts a contemporary approach by utilizing current data to examine whether the race of an offender affects two essential sentencing …
Relationship Between Department Of Justice Consent Decrees And Police Use Of Force And Search And Seizure Incidents, Judith Crowell
Relationship Between Department Of Justice Consent Decrees And Police Use Of Force And Search And Seizure Incidents, Judith Crowell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Efforts to reform law enforcement practices related to use of force and search and seizure incidents have largely involved policy revisions and training enhancements. This study compares use of force and search and seizure incidents in the Baltimore City (BCPD) and the Chicago (CPD) Police Departments before and after the implementation of a Department of Justice (DOJ) Consent Decree. An Independent Samples t-test was used to analyze whether there was a statistically significant difference between pre and post use of force incidents and search and seizure incidents by the BCPD and the CPD. Secondary data regarding the BCPD use of …

Empathy In Occupational Therapy: A Call For Reflection, Razan Hamed, Vikram Pagpatan
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Empathy is a building block in health care professions and it has been studied for decades in social and medical sciences given its significant role in health care outcomes and client satisfaction. In a climate where societies are congested with ideological conflicts, sociopolitical issues, racism, microaggressions, and bias, we must reflect on how we are preparing our students and future occupational therapists to be empathetic communicators and clinicians. We must also capture the evolution of empathy in new generations of occupational therapy students in the era of sociopolitical change, telehealth practices, and remote learning. Empathy decline is a documented trend …

Themes Of Moral Injury In The Field Of Asl Interpreting, Samantha Michaelson
Themes Of Moral Injury In The Field Of Asl Interpreting, Samantha Michaelson
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
This research project explores connections between a moral injury framework and the recognition and mitigation of ethical stress and trauma experienced by ASL-English interpreters. I have employed strategies such as thick description, textual analysis, and a narrative synthesis of existing literature on moral injury and ethical stress in interpreting to arrive at my findings. The study explains Demand Control Schema (DCS) and the Code of Professional Conduct (CPC) as valuable tools for interpreters to discuss and address ethical stresses that arise in their work. Additionally, I examine the concept of role space and its relevance to the experience of ethical/moral …

Barriers To Care Within The Nampa Population, Jenni Matthews, Sydney Nickel
2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Social determinants of health (SDOH) play a critical role in shaping healthcare utilization and overall well-being within communities. This study examines trends and patterns in SDOH within the Nampa community to identify social variables affecting the utilization of health services and determine the services needed to best serve the population. Data were collected through surveys distributed by St. Luke’s Hospital, including both clinic-based and community-wide surveys. Using Excel for data cleaning and RStudio for statistical analysis, we evaluated SDOH trends across multiple data sources and assessed differences in their ability to capture key indicators, such as housing instability.
Preliminary analysis …

Building Wealth One Sentence At A Time: A Capitalist’S Guide To Criminal Justice, Alexandra J. Lindell
Masters Projects
This project explores the underutilized profit potential of criminal justice in the United States. Its systemic design and aggressive market positioning have made long-term success possible. Nevertheless, this is just the beginning; there are new revenue streams to unlock and untapped markets to capture. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research identifies key historical policies, how collateral consequences contribute to customer retention and acquisition, and current barriers to profit maximization. The findings emphasize the importance of a coordinated, multi-level strategy involving lawmakers, media, corporations, and private stakeholders to protect and expand revenue streams, manipulate public perception, and disrupt reform efforts. By …
Investigating Cold Homicide Cases In Michigan: Combining Systematic Research With Experiential Insight, Jaqueline Chavarria
Investigating Cold Homicide Cases In Michigan: Combining Systematic Research With Experiential Insight, Jaqueline Chavarria
Honors Theses
According to the Michigan State Police (2023), murder/non-negligent manslaughter, commonly known as homicide, is the “willful (non-negligent) killing of one human being by another.” The Murder Accountability Project suggests there could be over 20,000 unsolved homicide cases in Michigan between 1965 and 2023 (2024). Despite the prevalence of unsolved cases, scholarly analysis on the topic is limited. This study examines solvability factors, also known as clearance factors, for cold homicide cases in Michigan by conducting a systematic literature review with news publications. Additionally, this study incorporates experiential insight, offering a holistic exploration of solvability factors. Using a systematic approach, 15 …
Sleep Health In The United States: A Public Health Perspective, Krista Chelsea Coipel, Yenigat Abate
Sleep Health In The United States: A Public Health Perspective, Krista Chelsea Coipel, Yenigat Abate
Liberty University Research Week
Background: Sleep is recognized as a multifaceted neurological condition that facilitates rest and enables the body to replenish its energy reserves. The significance of sleep is underscored by the observation that individuals dedicate approximately one-third of their lives to this state. In adults, insufficient sleep is defined as obtaining less than seven hours per night, which can elevate the risk of chronic health issues and adversely affect overall well-being and quality of life. Research has established correlations between inadequate sleep and various health problems, including obesity, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, and metabolic and endocrine dysfunctions, among others. Data indicate that …

Ca Harmful Algae Risk Mapping (C-Harm), Clarissa Anderson Phd, Raphael M. Kudela
Benefits of Ocean Observing Catalog (BOOC)
The CA-Harmful Algae Risk Mapping (C-HARM) system generates predictions of harmful algal bloom (HAB) conditions in California and Southern Oregon coastal waters through a combination of 1) real-time circulation models that predict the ocean physics, i.e. the West Coast Operational Forecast System (WCOFS), 2) satellite remote-sensing data of the ocean “color” and chlorophyll patterns, and 3) statistical models for predicting bloom and toxin likelihoods. These predictions are generated daily to provide a forecast of where you might encounter a Pseudo-nitzschia bloom and/or domoic acid event in the next one to three days.

Systemic Failures Of The Criminal Justice System, Isabella Lucero
Systemic Failures Of The Criminal Justice System, Isabella Lucero
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
America’s history as a nation that was founded on the unjust treatment of the people of color has forever shaped the way our justice system has evolved. From slavery to “Black Codes” to Jim Crow Laws, the system has never been set up for equal administration of justice. The purpose of this essay is to evaluate how the Criminal Justice System disadvantages and targets individuals at all stages of justice involvement, with a particular focus on individuals from communities of color.

Hindsight Is 20/20: Epilepsy Is Not One-Size-Fits-All, Raika Kim
Hindsight Is 20/20: Epilepsy Is Not One-Size-Fits-All, Raika Kim
Northwestern University Law Review
For many, epilepsy is one of the first conditions that come to mind when thinking of a disability, and for good reason: over 50 million people in the world live with epilepsy. Yet misunderstandings about epilepsy have perpetuated social stigma surrounding the disability for centuries. Ableist beliefs led to the passage of laws in the 1900s condoning—and in some cases, requiring—sterilization of individuals with epilepsy and restriction of their right to marry. Even today, state driving laws, justified as promoting public safety, categorically prevent anyone diagnosed with epilepsy from driving unless they are seizure free for an arbitrary, nonuniform period …

Introduction
When Fred Korematsu stood in the San Francisco federal district court in 1942 to challenge the constitutionality of a criminal charge that he had violated an exclusion order issued pursuant to Executive Order 9066, he was represented by pro bono counsel funded by the San Francisco office of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). But just four days after Fred’s attorneys filed a motion to dismiss his criminal charges, ACLU director Roger Baldwin—wanting to avoid angering President Roosevelt—conveyed the “national board’s decision to prohibit test cases from challenging Roosevelt’s authority to issue Executive Order 9066.” Instead, local ACLU affiliates …

An Investigative Analysis Into The Correlation Between Police Department Budgets And Violent Crime Rates., Julie Schwartz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Criminal justice reform and calls to defund the police have become more prevalent since the unrest that occurred in 2020. Research to date has looked at criminal justice reform, crime causation, and discussions surrounding defunding the police. Previous research has looked at police funding conceptually but not from a quantitative lens. The purpose of this quantitative nonexperimental study was to provide an investigative analysis into police department funding and the effect of the funding on violent crime rates using strain theory as its foundation. The research question addressed the relationship between police department budgets, specifically the criminal investigations unit, and …
