Fashioning The Body Politic: Explorations Of The Political Semiotics Of Fashion In France And England During The French Revolution, Annika F. Gauthier Jan 2026

Fashioning The Body Politic: Explorations Of The Political Semiotics Of Fashion In France And England During The French Revolution, Annika F. Gauthier

Scripps Senior Theses

In the midst of the French Revolution, women’s fashion underwent a complete revolution, moving from the multi-layered elaborate gowns of the ancien regime, to light, form-fitting dresses. These gowns reveal the way clothing reflects the political positions of women and the ways the French and the British used clothing to construct national identity and politics. Following research on the political symbolism and role of clothing across France and Britain, this thesis reviews fashion’s overarching connection to politics, revealing its role in the early French Revolution’s conception of women and patriotism, women’s responses to political exclusions, and rival nations’ adaptations of …

Social Work Faculty Publications

Background: In recent years, the sociopolitical landscape in the United States has shifted due to an increase in state-level legislation regarding LGBTQ+ rights, a trend that has been particularly pronounced in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. While the mental health impacts of enacted laws are increasingly documented, a critical gap remains in understanding the psychological toll of the legislative debates themselves—the prolonged periods of public discourse surrounding the restriction of rights.

Methods: Utilizing data from the 2025 Queer Kentucky Survey (N = 817), this exploratory study examined the association between LGBTQ+ community belongingness and acute suicidality attributed specifically to anti-LGBTQ+ legislative …

The Impact Of Extreme Risk Protection Orders On Homicide And Suicide: Are There Any Red Flags?, K. Alexander Adams Jan 2026

The Impact Of Extreme Risk Protection Orders On Homicide And Suicide: Are There Any Red Flags?, K. Alexander Adams

Wyoming Law Review

Twenty-two states have instituted Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) laws, also known as red flag laws. These laws allow law enforcement, family members, and others to petition courts to temporarily seize firearms from an individual believed to be a danger to themselves or others. These laws have been passed with the goal of reducing firearm-related homicide and suicide. This Article tests whether these laws save lives by using a generalized synthetic control model, improving upon the previously used difference-in-difference and standard synthetic control models. This preliminary study suggests ERPOs, as currently written, fail to statistically significantly reduce total homicide, total …

Black Americans' Interactions With Law Enforcement: The Black Church's Response, Shalanda Ehiozee Jan 2026

Black Americans' Interactions With Law Enforcement: The Black Church's Response, Shalanda Ehiozee

Doctor of Ministry

This research interrogates the disproportionate frequency of lethal law enforcement encounters involving Black Americans, contextualizing these fatalities within the systemic racial hierarchies foundational to the United States. By tracing the historical evolution of policing from antebellum slave patrols to contemporary practice, this study contends that modern law enforcement serves as a sophisticated mechanism of racial and social control.

To examine this phenomenon, the research employs a qualitative, multidimensional methodology that synthesizes Comparative Caste Analysis, case study examination, and a Christological framework. This inquiry is further bolstered by a longitudinal analysis of African American ecclesiological activism, culminating in a theological reflection …

How To Manage The Wolf In The Fold, Susan Bisom-Rapp, Urwana Coiquaud Jan 2026

How To Manage The Wolf In The Fold, Susan Bisom-Rapp, Urwana Coiquaud

Faculty Scholarship

Recent scholarly work on regulatory capture in the platform economy accounts for the political role and power wielded by app-based firms aiming to reform the existing legal environment to favor their low-cost labor business models. This article adds to scholarly perspectives on the platform economy by shifting the focus to government actors, the role of narrative in communicating with the public, and institutional constraints which may hamper the government’s ability to provide a cogent rationale for opposing or implementing legal change. The article’s central contribution is underscoring the role the government plays in facilitating or preventing regulatory capture. To that …

Principle Over Pedigree: United States V. Rahimi, Post-Ratification History, And The Case For Justice Barrett’S Approach, Joel Myers

Nebraska Law Review

Four years ago, the Supreme Court revolutionized Second Amendment law in New York Rifle & Pistol Ass’n, Inc. v. Bruen by instituting a test concentrated on text, history, and tradition. To uphold a firearm regulation, the government must demonstrate a relevantly similar historical analogue. Shortly after, the Court affirmed but clarified its position in United States v. Rahimi by performing the Bruen analysis at a higher level of generality and rejecting a challenge to 18 U.S.C. 922(g)(8). The Court’s evolving Second Amendment jurisprudence offers fertile ground for the Court’s originalists to elucidate their perception of constitutional interpretation. In Rahimi, Justice …

What Constitution? The Dual State Theory In Immigration Law & Practice, Elizabeth Keyes Jan 2026

What Constitution? The Dual State Theory In Immigration Law & Practice, Elizabeth Keyes

SMU Law Review

Immigration law in the second Trump Administration has created profound disorientation and dissonance, where some legal matters proceed in largely familiar ways, and others seem to occur in an entirely new dimension. This Article avails itself of Ernst Fraenkel’s Dual State theory to examine this dissonance. It argues that a duality exists in U.S. immigration law today between the federal courts and the administrative immigration system. In Fraenkel’s terms, constitutional challenges to immigration policies and individual habeas cases demonstrate important features of the Normative State, one that is consistent with the Rule of Law. By contrast, the administrative system—comprising the …

Biosecure-Llm Framework: Protecting Llms From Cyberbiosecurity Threats And The Case For Independent Ai Safety Governance, Xavier-Lewis Palmer, Lucas Potter, Srdjan Lesaja, Sotirios Karathanasis, Mohammad Ghasemigol Jan 2026

Biosecure-Llm Framework: Protecting Llms From Cyberbiosecurity Threats And The Case For Independent Ai Safety Governance, Xavier-Lewis Palmer, Lucas Potter, Srdjan Lesaja, Sotirios Karathanasis, Mohammad Ghasemigol

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Large Language Models (LLMs) are becoming critical infrastructure in scientific, healthcare, and governmental contexts. As frontier AI laboratories increasingly partner with government agencies, a fundamental question arises: Who should control the safety and policy-enforcement layers that constrain model behavior? Current safety mechanisms (LLM guardrails) are typically designed for generic "harmlessness" and operate by detecting semantic patterns and refusing requests. However, they are inadequate governance instruments because they cannot implement auditable, domain-specific controls tied to external regulatory policy objects (e.g., control lists or rules governing personally identifying information). Even a perfectly aligned model is not able to express institution-specific policy without …

Examining The Effectiveness Of Higher Education For Incarcerated Women In Midwest Correctional Facilities, Stacy Dority-Edwards Jan 2026

Examining The Effectiveness Of Higher Education For Incarcerated Women In Midwest Correctional Facilities, Stacy Dority-Edwards

All Capstone Projects

Research has shown that attainment of higher education reduces the likelihood of recidivism, which is also known as reoffending (National Institute of Justice, n.d.). Based upon the research, formerly incarcerated individuals with higher levels of education tend to exhibited lower rates of recidivism upon re-entry into the community. This suggests that educational opportunities are crucial for successful reintegration into the community and for reducing recidivism (Appleby, 2023). This study is an investigation into the effectiveness of higher education on the lives of incarcerated women in the Midwest correctional facilities. This study examined the impact and effectiveness of college-level instruction, where …
