Social-Emotional Learning In Early Childhood, Darcy L. Logan
Social-Emotional Learning In Early Childhood, Darcy L. Logan
Masters Projects
According to research, many students exhibit problematic behavior within the classroom. These problematic behaviors can disrupt the academic school day. Teachers are reporting more instances of anger, anxiety, lack of impulse control, and oppositional defiance in their students (Aksoy, 2020). The rates of suspension and expulsion for children under five are alarmingly high. To help struggling students, teachers need better support and resources. Providing these resources can help students develop appropriate social skills and succeed academically. This project aims to provide teachers with the necessary support required to enhance social-emotional learning in their classrooms. Research has shown that problematic behavior …
Combating Trauma And The Immigrant Paradox In Schools, Emma Bergman
Combating Trauma And The Immigrant Paradox In Schools, Emma Bergman
Honors Projects
Over time, research on immigrant populations has revealed a trend known as the immigrant paradox in which, the further generations get from the generation of immigration, the poorer their outcomes are in areas such as mental health, delinquency, substance abuse, and education. Though a definitive explanation for this trend has yet to be identified, prevailing theories include several social, familial, and community-based factors such as the impacts of bilingualism, parental expectations, biculturalism, co-ethnic peers, quality of schools, and community support. Little attention has been paid to individual factors such as mental health and trauma. The present study proposes the transgenerational …
Sexual Health Education Scope And Sequence, Sara Wadsworth
Sexual Health Education Scope And Sequence, Sara Wadsworth
Honors Projects
Based on a significant amount of prior research, comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) has been identified to be the most effective method of teaching sexual health education (SHAPE America, 2021; World Health Organization, 2023). Comprehensive sexual health education improves healthy behaviors and outcomes, provides useful information, and is positively perceived by students (Gardner, 2015; Kirby, 2002; Robinson et al., 2022). However, the United States’ current sexual health education has not implemented this ideal method, which is shown through state laws, students’ experiences, underdeveloped skills and flawed understanding of concepts, and – most importantly – a lack of resources for teachers (Foley, …

Autism And Experiences In Relationships: A Moderated Mediation Analysis Exploring Different Pathways For Gender And Sexuality, Evah-Marie Lemma
Undergraduate Theses
Objective: Autistic individuals are at higher risk of sexual victimization than the general population. The purpose of this study was to examine experiences of insecurity and adverse sexual experiences in romantic relationships from the perspective of those with autism diagnoses, those who suspect they have autism, and those with autistic traits, as well as determine potential mediating and moderating factors.
Methods: Participants (N=452 U.S. adults) completed various measures assessing autistic traits, masking, insecurity in relationships, adverse sexual experiences, perceived social support, discrimination, and perceived availability of partners via online survey. Participants also reported formal autism diagnosis or suspected …

Student Publications and Presentations
This study examined trauma-informed practices of mental health professionals from eight different countries. The literature indicates that many practitioners feel unprepared and unequipped to therapeutically work with individuals who have experienced trauma-related psychological disorders (SAMHSA, 2014). This poster highlights themes derived from interviews with nine different mental health practitioners from around the globe, offers recommendations to emphasize graduate and post-graduate trauma-informed training, and also offers suggestions for future trauma competencies. The researchers utilized Hermeneutic Phenomenology methodology to analyze the themes from the nine interviews. Common themes identified in the interviews suggest that mental health systems in all nine countries are …
Examining Populist Political Parties In The Baltic States, Lilly Thompson
Examining Populist Political Parties In The Baltic States, Lilly Thompson
Honors College Theses
Globally, populist political parties and leaders have been making gains over the last decade. Many of these populist leaders have been using their power to erode democratic institutions and public trust. While the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have long distinguished themselves from the other post-communist countries of Eastern Europe, they are no exception to the populist trend. Under what conditions are populist political parties in the Baltic states successful? In this paper, I analyze the distinctive variables present that can explain the popularity of populism in all three states. I argue that there is a positive correlation …

Mindful Parenting And Harsh Parenting: The Indirect Role Of Maternal Stress, Heidi M. Sanders
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
This study explored associations between maternal mindful parenting (i.e., mindful discipline, being in the moment with the child), maternal parental stress, and harsh parenting (i.e., physical and psychological harsh parenting) in early childhood. A sample of 172 mothers of young children in New Mexico completed questionnaires assessing perceived parental stress, use of harsh parenting, and mindful parenting. Results of the path model analysis demonstrated that being mindful in the moment with the child was directly, negatively associated with physical harsh parenting and also negatively associated with perceived stress. Mindful discipline was directly, negatively associated with both psychological aggression and perceived …
Psychological Influences On Reaction When Faced With Failure And Difficult Experiences, Marcus Cunha
Psychological Influences On Reaction When Faced With Failure And Difficult Experiences, Marcus Cunha
Honors Theses
The current study investigated the impact of psychological traits on emotional reactions in the face of challenges. The study employed tasks designed to induce negative psychological states, such as a Learned Helplessness (LH) task (Hooper & McHugh, 2013) and the difficult Compound Remote Associate (CRA) task (Bowden & Jung-Beeman, 2003). A correlational study was conducted using a within-subjects design. All participants were given initially the same questionnaires measuring the following predictor variables: Grit, Need for Cognition (NFC), Psychological Flexibility (PF), Trait Cognitive Fusion (CF), and Emotional Stability. Participants then engaged in the LH and CRA tasks followed by completing outcome …
Effects Of Postural Position, Eeg Asymmetry, And Temperamental Style On Cognitive Task Performance, Taylor Cops, Christy D. Wolfe
Effects Of Postural Position, Eeg Asymmetry, And Temperamental Style On Cognitive Task Performance, Taylor Cops, Christy D. Wolfe
Undergraduate Theses
The literature shows hemispheric asymmetry in individuals corresponding with temperamental style. Those with greater right-frontal activation tend towards withdrawal/inhibition and those with greater left-frontal activation tend towards approach/activation (e.g., Davidson, 1992). Other literature suggests that greater right-parietotemporal activation is associated with increased arousal (Heller, 1993; Wolfe & Bell, 2014). Temperamental style has been linked with cognitive performance with approach-oriented temperaments being associated with both higher and lower performance depending on the task requirements (Khan et al., 2024; Wolfe & Bell, 2007). Literature further suggests that postural position (e.g., sitting, standing, lying down) may influence feelings of approach/withdrawal and cognitive processing. …
New England High School Coaches’ Perceptions Of The Role Of Team Culture On Performance And Well-Being, Stephen Brown
New England High School Coaches’ Perceptions Of The Role Of Team Culture On Performance And Well-Being, Stephen Brown
Counseling and Psychology Dissertations
High school sports are the most popular extracurricular activity in the United States. Coaches serve as gatekeepers to team culture and influence student athletes’ experiences in those sports. Team cultures influence performance and well-being outcomes. Those outcomes are not inherently beneficial and have caused harm to some student-athletes. Guided by a constructivist approach paired with grounded theory analysis, this study investigates how high school coaches in New England perceive the role of team culture in promoting student-athlete well-being and performance. Thirteen head varsity athletic coaches from New England schools took part in interviews via Zoom to share their thoughts on …
Investigating The Impact Of Outpatient Mental Health Follow-Up Care On Continued Adolescent Suicidality: An Evidence-Based Change Project Proposal, Kimberly Feifel
Investigating The Impact Of Outpatient Mental Health Follow-Up Care On Continued Adolescent Suicidality: An Evidence-Based Change Project Proposal, Kimberly Feifel
MSN Capstone Projects
The escalating rates of adolescent suicide globally, coupled with the surge in pediatric hospitalization rates, underscore the urgent need for effective intervention strategies. Despite hospitalization, many patients persist in experiencing suicidal ideation and behaviors, often leading to readmissions. A significant portion of these individuals do not receive adequate outpatient mental health follow-up care post-discharge. As a leading pediatric healthcare institution committed to delivering exemplary care, particularly to those struggling with mental health challenges, the organization’s commitment demands proactive measures.
The attached proposal aims to establish an organizational policy to reduce 30-day readmission rates among adolescents with persistent suicidal thoughts and …
Discharge Preparedness For The Type 1 Diabetic Patient, Nathan W. Sewell
Discharge Preparedness For The Type 1 Diabetic Patient, Nathan W. Sewell
MSN Capstone Projects
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the individual who suffers from type 1 diabetes, because there appears to be a disparity in the equity of their healthcare needs as compared to other chronic illness. Type 1 diabetes is a progressive illness that places a tremendous burden on the person inflicted with it, including emotional, physical, and financial strains, and these burdens contribute to an emotional condition known as diabetic distress (Orben et al., 2022). This distress impacts the individual’s self-efficacy, and they see more frequent exacerbations of their diabetes like diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) (Fisher et al., 2018; Hood …

Nonfinancial Conflict Of Interest In Medical Research: Is Regulation The Right Answer, Nehad Mikhael
Nonfinancial Conflict Of Interest In Medical Research: Is Regulation The Right Answer, Nehad Mikhael
Journal of Law and Health
Medical research plays a vital role in advancing human knowledge, developing new therapies and procedures, and reducing human suffering. Following the atrocities committed in the name of medical research by German physicians during the Nazi era, the Nuremberg trials were held, and an ethical code was created to establish the limits within which medical research can operate. Consequently, legal regimes built upon this ethical foundation to develop laws that ensure the integrity of medical research and the safety of human subjects. These laws sought to protect human subjects by minimizing conflicts of interest that may arise during the process. Furthermore, …
A Trigger Warning: Red Flag Laws Are Still Constitutionally Permissible And Could Reduce The Suicide Rates In The Country's Most Vulnerable States, Joseph C. Campbell
A Trigger Warning: Red Flag Laws Are Still Constitutionally Permissible And Could Reduce The Suicide Rates In The Country's Most Vulnerable States, Joseph C. Campbell
Journal of Law and Health
Montana, Alaska, and Wyoming lead the United States in a category coveted by no one: the suicide rate. Firearm ownership drives the rate to the disproportionate level it reaches year after year and the states are left with little recourse. This article argues the usefulness and constitutionality of narrowly tailored red-flag laws aimed exclusively at reducing the rate of suicide in these mountain states. The article follows Supreme Court jurisprudence leading up to New York Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen and offers an analysis that complies with the hyper textualist history and tradition test laid out by Scalia in …

The Changing Nature Of Education In Youth Justice Centres In New South Wales (Australia), Laura Metcalfe, Cathy Little Dr, Garner Clancey Dr, David Evans Dr
Journal of Prison Education Research
Education is an important protective factor in preventing involvement in crime. For those young people that enter the youth justice system, and especially youth justice centres, education is a critical, but infrequently explored part of their time in custody following generally disrupted schooling experiences. There are currently six youth justice centres in New South Wales, Australia. Each of these centres have an Education and Training Unit which are schools funded by and staffed with Department of Education personnel. There is evidence that young people accessing these schools regard them very positively. However, this article, drawing on publicly available information, raises …

INTRODUCTION: Patients with chronic pain frequently report cognitive symptoms that affect memory and attention, which are functions attributed to the hippocampus. Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a chronic neuropathic pain disorder characterized by paroxysmal attacks of unilateral orofacial pain. Given the stereotypical nature of TN pain and lack of negative symptoms including sensory loss, TN provides a unique model to investigate the hippocampal implications of chronic pain. Recent evidence demonstrated that TN is associated with macrostructural hippocampal abnormalities indicated by reduced subfield volumes; however, there is a paucity in our understanding of hippocampal microstructural abnormalities associated with TN.
OBJECTIVES: To explore …
The Relationship Of Self-Determination And Self-Construal On College Adjustment, Rayhane Baniardalan
The Relationship Of Self-Determination And Self-Construal On College Adjustment, Rayhane Baniardalan
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the interplay between self-construal (individualistic vs. collectivistic), basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness), and college adjustment among a diverse student population. Contrary to expectations, self-construal did not directly predict overall adjustment. However, horizontal individualism (valuing personal achievement over group success) was negatively associated with adjustment. Supporting self-determination theory (SDT), all three basic psychological needs were positively correlated with all three domains of college adjustment (academic, social, and psychological). The strongest correlations were between relatedness and social functioning, and competence and social functioning. Racial differences in adjustment could not be examined due to sample limitations. Interaction effects between …
Collaboration Of Board Certified Behavior Analysts And Special Education Teachers In Transition, Amelia Ruth Spencer
Collaboration Of Board Certified Behavior Analysts And Special Education Teachers In Transition, Amelia Ruth Spencer
Theses and Dissertations
Transitions occur at many points in a child's educational journey. For children with disabilities, these changes in routine, service providers, and setting may be especially difficult and result in problem behavior. Special education teachers are expected to facilitate a smooth transition from one setting to another, teaching appropriate skills and addressing problem behavior as it arises. Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), who have an expertise in problem behavior and skill generalization, are currently under-utilized in schools and could work collaboratively with special education teachers and other stakeholders to make it easier for students with disabilities experiencing a school transition. As …

When They Just Don’T Sleep: Differential Impacts Of Reduced Child Sleep On Depression, Anxiety, And Stress Among Caregivers Of Children With And Without Neurogenetic Syndromes, Kimberly Galvez-Ortega, Kristine Marceau, Dan Foti, Bridgette Kelleher
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Introduction: Children with neurogenetic syndromes commonly experience significant and pervasive sleep disturbances, however, associations with caregiver mental health remains unclear. Previous studies have linked sleep disturbances with increased caregiver depression in typically developing populations, and heightened caregiver stress among neurogenetic populations. The present study expands on findings by exploring the longitudinal association between child sleep duration and caregiver mental health (depression, anxiety, stress) throughout development (infancy to school-aged children) in dyads with and without a child affected by a neurogenetic syndrome.
Methods: Participants were drawn from the Purdue Early Phenotype Study, including 193 caregivers (Age: M = 34.40 years, SD …

Green Solutions: A Smart Strategy For Recycling Electronics In Ghana, Yodit Fitsum
Honors Theses
Electronic waste (e-waste) presents a significant environmental challenge, particularly in developing nations like Ghana. This study examines the opportunities and challenges associated with e-waste recycling in Ghana, focusing on the Agbogbloshie dumpsite. In Ghana, the informal e-waste sector plays a crucial role, providing employment to marginalized individuals who dismantle and process e-waste using basic methods. However, these practices raise concerns due to hazardous working conditions and environmental pollution. Conversely, certified recycling companies adhere to strict safety and environmental standards. Key challenges include recycling contaminated e-plastics and declining precious metal content in modern electronics, highlighting the need for improved recycling infrastructure. …

Implementing Choice In Treatment Modality For Adolescents With Autism Learning Daily Living Skills, Silvia Robazza
Implementing Choice In Treatment Modality For Adolescents With Autism Learning Daily Living Skills, Silvia Robazza
Honors Theses
Daily living skills, categorized as personal-care activities within the home, community, and school setting, are crucial components in establishing daily routines amongst adolescents (Stabel, 2013). Many of these activities require gross motor and fine motor skills, which are skills that tend to be difficult for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD;Chen et al., 2022). When trying to express their wants and needs surrounding completing day-to-day activities, individuals with ASD may engage in problem behaviors as a way to communicate (Iwata et al., 1982). Nonetheless, implementing choice in treatment has been found to significantly decrease occurrences of problem behavior (Shogren et …
