The Future Of Professional Sports’ Audiences: How Organizational Cultures And Social Media Usage Impact Mlb’S Ability To Appeal To Younger More Diverse Fanbases, Alexis Clancy
Honors Projects in Management
Professional sports organizations are continually attempting to broaden their fanbases and appeal to different groups. Major League Baseball (MLB) has particularly struggled to attract younger more diverse fans. Current literature has focused on the ability of social media and front office representation to cultivate social identification and organizational commitment to broaden existing fanbases across all American professional sports. The purpose of this study is to identify how MLB clubs are adapting to combat a diminishing fanbase and how to effectively diversify their reach. Qualitative research was conducted through twenty interviews of MLB and Minor League Baseball (MiLB) front office employees. …

Documenting Shared Human Experiences Of Loss And Grief, Emily Yuruki, April Masarik
2024 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Every human experiences the world uniquely; however, there are also universal experiences that all humans share with one another, regardless of historical period or cultural setting. For instance, all humans experience loss and grieve those losses. The ways in which people mourn and cope may differ, but the experience of loss itself is part of the human condition. In a society where tensions and conflicts appear at the forefront of our minds, research that highlights commonalities rather than our differences is desperately needed.
To showcase the common features of loss and grief, we will analyze hundreds of undergraduate students’ narratives, …

Diagnostic Disclosure Using Script-Driven Imagery In Borderline Personality Disorder, Michelle Rodriguez
Diagnostic Disclosure Using Script-Driven Imagery In Borderline Personality Disorder, Michelle Rodriguez
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Borderline Personality Disorder is a widely underdiagnosed psychiatric disorder associated with stigma and misinformation, both in the general public and clinical settings. Current diagnostic disclosure methods do not consider borderline-specific challenges, such as interpersonal hypersensitivity and emotion dysregulation. This has led to discrepancies in patient-provider communication approaches, perpetuating underdiagnosis and negative diagnostic experiences, impacting recovery outcomes and attitudes toward the condition. We seek to determine the efficacy of using script-driven imagery as a method of diagnostic disclosure and psychoeducation versus current practice for individuals newly diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Our randomized controlled trial will assess efficacy as the proportion …

Prolonged Metformin For Managing Postpartum Weight Retention In Women With Gestational Diabetes, Ashley Manning
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Gestational diabetes is one of the most common obstetric complications and causes both intrapartum issues and increased long-term cardiometabolic risk of type 2 diabetes. Overweight and obese populations are more likely to develop gestational diabetes, which manifests as increased gestational weight gain and postpartum weight retention, perpetuating the cycle of obesity and diabetes in future pregnancies leading to further type 2 diabetes risk. Metformin has become more widely accepted for use during pregnancy and has been associated with decreased gestational weight gain; however, its long-term effects in the postpartum period remain poorly understood. This randomized controlled trial seeks to determine …

Performance Orientations: A Critical Inquiry With The Mmai In An Urban High School, Kenneth Butler
Thomas C. Hunt Building a Research Community Day
In this study, the Motivation for Mathematics Abbreviated Instrument (MMAI) was administered to students in an urban high school in one Midwestern city. Demographically, the vast majority of these students identify with categories other than white. There is a strong emphasis on college readiness and high expectations within the school’s culture. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of the 168 responses revealed strong fit to a four-factor model. The items within each factor are shown to discriminate between factors, converge together within factors, and to reliably measure their individual factors. This model strongly aligned with the four intended motivational constructs; however, EFA …

Assessing The Need For A Mental Health Task Force For Aviation Science Students At Bridgewater State University, Cooper Castellone
Honors Program Theses and Projects
In the current landscape of aviation, the issue of mental health is of great concern, particularly among flight training students who have shown to grapple with depression in silence. A report issued by the Pilot Mental Health Aviation Rulemaking Committee in April 2024 underscored seven significant barriers impeding pilots from seeking necessary support for mental health concerns. Consequently, we completed a study aimed at understanding the prevailing mental health challenges among flight training students and identify strategies for institutions such as Bridgewater State University (BSU) to offer meaningful assistance. Our study consisted of a survey distributed to 14 institutions in …
With Great Power: A Content Analysis Of Masculinities And Appearance-Related Themes In The Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ryan Maxim
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Comic book characters and superheroes have served as Hollywood’s biggest cash cow of the last two decades, dominating box office records, over-saturating the release schedules of major movie studios, and influencing the cultural consciousness in a way that is historically unprecedented. The most notable and financially successful example of this trend can be seen in the form of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a franchise that has grossed an estimated $29.8 billion in box office revenue since its inception in 2008. Due to their immense popularity and global reach, superhero characters serve as role models for young boys and adult …

From Content To Composition: Equipping Non-Writing Instructors For Interdisciplinary Writing Proficiency, Taylor Weintrop
From Content To Composition: Equipping Non-Writing Instructors For Interdisciplinary Writing Proficiency, Taylor Weintrop
Theses
Academic writing is a fundamental component across disciplines in higher education, serving as a critical mode of communication and assessment of student understanding, proficiency, and mastery of course content. Despite its ubiquity, the responsibility for explicit writing instruction is often regulated to composition courses frequently housed within English departments, leading to a systemic and normative view that isolates writing development to a single field. This thesis critically explores the literature on writing studies, focusing on disciplinary attitudes toward writing, interdisciplinary movements, and how writing transfer occurs as students traverse academic fields. Along with the comprehensive literature review, this project includes …

Rebuilding Lives: Occupational Therapy's Crucial Role In Community Reintegration To Reduce Recidivism Rates, Julie Burgoon, Kari Joyce
MOT Student Capstones
The integration of occupational therapy (OT) in the criminal justice system provides a promising and unique approach for addressing community reintegration, thereby contributing to the reduction of recidivism rates in the United States. OT impacts recidivism rates by addressing three main areas; occupational deprivation, mental health, and community reintegration. OT addresses the negative consequences of incarceration by promoting engagement in meaningful activities, establishing routine, and assisting individuals in achieving a variety of skills necessary for successful reintegration. OTs can provide valuable interventions that support mental and occupational engagement to decrease recidivism rates. OT led community reintegration program not only improves …

A Multi-Site Qualitative Analysis Of The Juvenile Justice And Child Welfare Systems: Implications For Dual System Youth, Lauren Morgan
A Multi-Site Qualitative Analysis Of The Juvenile Justice And Child Welfare Systems: Implications For Dual System Youth, Lauren Morgan
Dissertations
Researchers have been studying juveniles who experience both child maltreatment and delinquency for decades. These studies document the prevalence, outcomes, and demographics of youth who navigate child welfare and juvenile justice systems, also known as dual system youth. However, there is a lack of investigation into the complex processes occurring at the intersection of these two systems. This dissertation aims to fill that gap by building on previous research, organizational theory, and the growing area of punishment literature in criminal justice. The goal is to better understand how juvenile justice and child welfare systems organizationally manage dual system youth. Specifically, …

Resonance: A Methodology And Pedagogy For Socially Just Storytelling, Helen Plevka-Jones
Theses and Dissertations
Through a close analysis of Valeria Luiselli’s Lost Children Archive and a comparative analysis of the intertexts it references, this dissertation argues that literary scholars and literacy pedagogues can learn from sound studies and archival practices together to achieve more socially just reading, writing, and teaching. The novel narrates a family traveling across the United States, not only experiencing their own journey but also learning about past forced migrations upon the same land and present attempted migrations into the country. As they encounter and interact with different print, audio, and visual artifacts, the characters achieve a more inclusive and complex …

Rainbows Around The Throne: Theological Aesthetics In Evangelism To Same-Sex Attracted Men, Austin Tucker Kemp
Rainbows Around The Throne: Theological Aesthetics In Evangelism To Same-Sex Attracted Men, Austin Tucker Kemp
Senior Honors Theses
Cultural barriers and worldview differences between American evangelicalism and the LGBTQ+ movement have historically hindered evangelism to same-sex attracted men. Although recent Christian theologians have offered wisdom for including same-sex attracted believers in the church and for combating prevailing secular worldviews, evangelistic strategies to reach gay unbelievers remain underdeveloped. This thesis identifies five desires common within the population of same-sex attracted men (beauty, friendship, romance, sexuality, and masculinity) and proposes a method of evangelism which targets these desires using theological aesthetics to communicate the beauty of the gospel creatively and compellingly. A focus on aesthetic apologetics, aesthetic community, and aesthetic …
Social-Emotional Learning In Early Childhood, Darcy L. Logan
Social-Emotional Learning In Early Childhood, Darcy L. Logan
Masters Projects
According to research, many students exhibit problematic behavior within the classroom. These problematic behaviors can disrupt the academic school day. Teachers are reporting more instances of anger, anxiety, lack of impulse control, and oppositional defiance in their students (Aksoy, 2020). The rates of suspension and expulsion for children under five are alarmingly high. To help struggling students, teachers need better support and resources. Providing these resources can help students develop appropriate social skills and succeed academically. This project aims to provide teachers with the necessary support required to enhance social-emotional learning in their classrooms. Research has shown that problematic behavior …
Combating Trauma And The Immigrant Paradox In Schools, Emma Bergman
Combating Trauma And The Immigrant Paradox In Schools, Emma Bergman
Honors Projects
Over time, research on immigrant populations has revealed a trend known as the immigrant paradox in which, the further generations get from the generation of immigration, the poorer their outcomes are in areas such as mental health, delinquency, substance abuse, and education. Though a definitive explanation for this trend has yet to be identified, prevailing theories include several social, familial, and community-based factors such as the impacts of bilingualism, parental expectations, biculturalism, co-ethnic peers, quality of schools, and community support. Little attention has been paid to individual factors such as mental health and trauma. The present study proposes the transgenerational …
Sexual Health Education Scope And Sequence, Sara Wadsworth
Sexual Health Education Scope And Sequence, Sara Wadsworth
Honors Projects
Based on a significant amount of prior research, comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) has been identified to be the most effective method of teaching sexual health education (SHAPE America, 2021; World Health Organization, 2023). Comprehensive sexual health education improves healthy behaviors and outcomes, provides useful information, and is positively perceived by students (Gardner, 2015; Kirby, 2002; Robinson et al., 2022). However, the United States’ current sexual health education has not implemented this ideal method, which is shown through state laws, students’ experiences, underdeveloped skills and flawed understanding of concepts, and – most importantly – a lack of resources for teachers (Foley, …
