Implementing Choice In Treatment Modality For Adolescents With Autism Learning Daily Living Skills, Silvia Robazza

Honors Theses

Daily living skills, categorized as personal-care activities within the home, community, and school setting, are crucial components in establishing daily routines amongst adolescents (Stabel, 2013). Many of these activities require gross motor and fine motor skills, which are skills that tend to be difficult for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD;Chen et al., 2022). When trying to express their wants and needs surrounding completing day-to-day activities, individuals with ASD may engage in problem behaviors as a way to communicate (Iwata et al., 1982). Nonetheless, implementing choice in treatment has been found to significantly decrease occurrences of problem behavior (Shogren et …

A Most Despicable Hoax: Women, Crime, And Newspapers In Depression-Era St. Louis, Nancy Stiles

Theses

This paper delves into the captivating saga of Nellie Muench, a St. Louis housewife whose life intersected with the burgeoning celebrity culture, evolving media landscape, and shifting gender dynamics of the early 20th century. Muench's involvement as a co-conspirator in the 1931 kidnapping for ransom of a wealthy doctor propelled her into the spotlight, where she navigated media manipulation to attempt to craft her own narrative. Secretly obtaining a baby and passing it off as her own child to gain jury sympathy and blackmail a rich paramour took interest in her case to sensational tabloid (and legal) heights. Drawing from …

Impact Of Empathic Concern On Prosocial Behavior In Gain And Loss Contexts: Evidence From Event-Related Potential, Xi Luo, Taowen Yu, Min Tan, Yiping Zhong

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

This study employs event-related potential (ERP) to examine the impact of empathic concern on prosocial decision-making with costs in both gain and loss contexts. In this experiment, participants can choose between two types of lottery tickets and pay lottery money to help the target person gain more money or lose less money. The behavioral results showed that regardless of the context of the decision (financial loss or gain), participants tended to help individuals who had induced high empathic concern. ERP results show that compared to the low-empathic-concern condition, the high-empathic-concern condition induced greater P3 amplitude in the gain context. However, …

Analyzing The Effect Of Targeted Activities On Linear Concept Understanding, Jenae Rogers Apr 2024

Analyzing The Effect Of Targeted Activities On Linear Concept Understanding, Jenae Rogers

Honors Theses

Despite previously showing mastery of all test topics in ALEKS, Andrews’ remedial math students continue to struggle with some of them on the paper tests. After previous research, additional teaching activities, including one targeting word problems, were implemented to address student misconceptions about linear equations. My current research compares student performance on the paper tests before and after these activities on questions regarding linear relationship word problems. My findings show no statistically significant difference in student performance after these activities. These results will lead to further curriculum changes, in an attempt to increase students’ long-term conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills.

Reading Resistance Into The Transformed Hero: An Excavation Of Race And Gender Identity In The Aeneid And Its Adaptations, Grace Song No

Honors Theses

Mythology pervades numerous areas of our everyday lives whether we recognize it or not, providing material for the language of power that controls our society today. This calls for an interrogation into the racial and gender dynamics of a key classical Roman text, Vergil’s Aeneid, and its utility for alt-right and white supremacist political agenda in the contemporary era. Regardless of how we view classical literature and history and their relevance to our modern day political and social sphere, it is undeniably a dominant figure in conversations about race and gender, especially for alt-right movements of America and Europe who …

Student Publications and Presentations

Research suggests that college student athletes experience more psychological and academic stressors than non-athletes. Therefore, it is prudent for universities to understand and plan to combat the psychological and academic risks that athletes experience. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in four psychological outcomes (stress, anxiety, depression, and resilience) and one academic outcome (GPA) for athletes (N = 44) vs. non-athletes (N = 207). The hypothesis for the study is that there is a significant difference in educational outcomes between student athletes and non-athletes; however, there is no significant difference is psychological outcomes.

The methodology of …

Can Psilocybin Be Used For The Treatment Of Major Depressive Disorder?, Suncharone Jolteus, Anaïsha Desravines, Sebastian Leslie, Khalique Ahmed

Student Publications and Presentations

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), also known as clinical depression, is a serious problem in our society as an estimated 21 million American suffer for this clinical condition. A main strategy for the treatment of MDD involves the inhabitation of the reuptake of serotonin and/or noradrenaline. To correct this problem selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are commonly used for the treatment of MDD.

This traditional treatment approach has many side effects, which include gastrointestinal problems, insomnia, cognitive impairment, and activation and aggravation of psychosis, etc. Additionally, about 20% of patients do not respond to such treatments, …

The Effects Of Class-Wide Function-Related Intervention Teams In A Self-Contained Elementary Classroom For Students With Emotional Or Behavioral Disorders, Peyton Ann Johnstone

Theses and Dissertations

Class-wide Function-related Intervention Teams (CW-FIT) is a classroom management intervention that incorporates positive behavior support (PBS) principles by teaching students specific classroom behavioral expectations during instructional time and providing students feedback on their behavior and use of social skills throughout the day. Students who are at risk for or are classified with Emotional or Behavioral Disorders (EBD) often struggle more both academically and socially than their peers. Because of the serious challenges that students with EBD face, it is important to find effective PBS interventions to help them be successful, both socially and academically. Researchers examined the effects of CW-FIT …

Multimodal 7t Imaging Reveals Enhanced Functional Coupling Between Salience And Frontoparietal Networks In Young Adult Tobacco Cigarette Smokers, Alan N. Francis, Sophie Sebille, Susan Whitfield Gabrieli, Joan Camprodon

School of Medicine Publications

Tobacco cigarette smoking is associated with disrupted brain network dynamics in resting brain networks including the Salience (SN) and Fronto parietal (FPN). Unified multimodal methods [Resting state connectivity analysis, Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI), and cortical thickness analysis] were employed to test the hypothesis that the impact of cigarette smoking on the balance among these networks is due to alterations in white matter connectivity, microstructural architecture, functional connectivity and cortical thickness (CT) and that these metrics define fundamental differences between people who smoke and nonsmokers. Multimodal analyses of previously collected 7 Tesla MRI data …

I Am A "Fruit Eater": Predicting Fruit And Vegetable Consumption With Approach Self-As-Doer Identities, Melisandra R. Mclaughlin, Abree A. Dieterman, Katelyn R. Kelley, Hannah B. Dunlavy, Ashley M. Lenarz

Research & Creative Achievement Day

The daily recommended intake of fruits and vegetables is 1.5-2 cups and 2-3 cups, respectively, but only one in 10 adults in the United States are meeting those recommendations (CDC, 2019). Research on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) indicates healthy eating behaviors can be predicted by intentions and other components of the theory (McDermott et al., 2015). Likewise, the self-as-doer, an identity that aims to describe individuals in terms of doing a behavior, also predicts healthy eating. However, less research has explored how the orientation of a doer identity predicts fruit and vegetable consumption. Those with an approach doer …
