Integrative And Holistic Approaches To Treating Ptsd: Two Theoretical Models To Guide Best Practice, Audrey G. Mcguinness Apr 2024

Integrative And Holistic Approaches To Treating Ptsd: Two Theoretical Models To Guide Best Practice, Audrey G. Mcguinness

Psychology Honors Projects

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating disorder that deserves quality psychotherapeutic treatment. As research on PTSD has progressed, it has become increasingly clear that the disorder is rooted in both neurological and psychological abnormalities. However, many currently available gold-standard psychotherapies target symptoms which arise from only one of these dysfunctional origins, leaving symptom profiles inadequately addressed and contributing to issues with attrition and residual symptoms. Integrative therapies, while still in the early stages of gaining empirical support, seem promising in terms of their ability to offer more complete symptom resolution than cognitive or somatic therapies alone. Another crucial aspect …

Final Scholarly Project: Optimal Perioperative Analgesic Management Guidelines For Elective Hip Arthroplasty In Adults, Makyah Dittoe

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Hip arthroplasty, a frequently performed orthopedic surgery, is gaining popularity. However, postoperative pain, opioid utilization, nausea, and vomiting are common side effects associated with this procedure. Perioperative analgesic management for hip arthroplasty varies among providers, leading to possible inadequate pain management. The goal of this scholarly project is to provide an optimal perioperative analgesic guideline to decrease postoperative pain, opioid consumption, nausea, and vomiting in adults undergoing elective hip arthroplasty utilizing evidence-based practice. The evidence suggests that a multimodal analgesic approach incorporating multiple drug classes and types of anesthesia is most effective in reducing adverse postoperative outcomes. Using the Johns …

A Cryptid For Catholics And Communists: The Asuang As An Apparatus For Socio-Political Control In The History Of The Philippines, Alexandra Eckhart

Honors Projects

This essay explores the utilization of folklore beliefs in psychological warfare through a comparative analysis of General Edward Geary Lansdale's tactics during the Hukbalahap insurgency at the beginning of the Cold War and the historical exploitation of the asuang myth by Spanish Catholic missionaries in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. While both instances involved leveraging local superstitions to influence behavior, their motivations and approaches diverged significantly. Unlike the missionaries, Lansdale's actions stemmed from a strategic imperative to combat communism rather than a sense of racial superiority or religious domination. Drawing parallels between Lansdale's methods and centuries-old patterns of oppression, this …

Defendant Attractiveness And Gender: A Question Of Juror Bias, Genevieve Smiley Apr 2024

Defendant Attractiveness And Gender: A Question Of Juror Bias, Genevieve Smiley

Honors Projects

Despite the United States’ punitive reputation, many perpetrators of sexual assault are often left unprosecuted. A reason for this, among many, may be the jury’s propensity for bias due to several extralegal factors. The current study examines the ways the extralegal factors of defendant attractiveness and gender affect juror decision-making in an acquaintance sexual assault case. Mock jurors read a short summary of a sexual assault case accompanied by a randomized photograph of a defendant manipulated by attractiveness and gender. Mock jurors were then asked to give determinations of guilt and sentencing length, their perceptions of the defendant, and responsibility …

Assessing Social Engagement Differences Across The Continuum Of Sexuality, Ariana Cunningham Apr 2024

Assessing Social Engagement Differences Across The Continuum Of Sexuality, Ariana Cunningham

Honors Projects

Individuals attracted to more than one gender identity, also known as non-monosexuals, exist in a unique place in the sexuality dichotomy. Often experiencing prejudice from both their heterosexual and homosexual peers, they are prone to increased rates of loneliness. Loneliness has been shown to increase both mental and physical health risks. Due to the dangers of loneliness, the current study set out to examine this relationship between non-monosexuals and loneliness. A two-phase study was created containing an online survey portion and an in-person interview procedure. Due to small sample sizes, no statistical significance was found but data has been trending …

MSN Capstone Projects

The purpose of this implementation project is to help decrease the rates of mucosal barrier injuries (MBI’s) and oral mucositis (OM) in patients receiving chemotherapy on the oncology unit. In 2022, it was reported that seven MBI’s occurred on an oncology unit in a large county hospital in an urban area. This secondary infection has the potential to increase morbidity, increase treatment costs, lengthen hospital stays, and can have a devastating impact on quality of life (Correa et al., 2019). There is currently no protocol in place at the proposed location for this intervention that will help reduce this potential …

Neural And Computational Mechanisms Of Effort Under The Pressure Of A Deadline, Andrea Pisauro, Daniele Pollicino, Lucy Fisher, Matthew A.J. Apps Apr 2024

Neural And Computational Mechanisms Of Effort Under The Pressure Of A Deadline, Andrea Pisauro, Daniele Pollicino, Lucy Fisher, Matthew A.J. Apps

School of Psychology

Deadlines fundamentally shape the motivation for effort. Research examining effort-based choices findshigh effort is an avoided cost. However, this work overlooks the fact that effort can be valuable when itmakes progress on long-term goals before deadlines. We test a new framework where motivationdepends on deadline pressure (work remaining / time remaining). Across three studies we usecomputational modelling on novel tasks examining effort-based decisions when effort makes progresson goals with deadlines. In support of hypotheses, deadline pressure significantly impacts decisionmaking, shifting people from avoiding effort, to seeking and valuing it. Using ultra-high-field fMRI, weshow that functionally connected putamen and midcingulate cortex …

An Evaluation Of The Book Of Hosea And Its Impact For Our Lives Today, Nathan Fulton Apr 2024

An Evaluation Of The Book Of Hosea And Its Impact For Our Lives Today, Nathan Fulton

Honors Projects

The book of Hosea provides a rich story of the life of the prophet Hosea and the constant woes of the nation of Israel. Through analysis of commentaries from past theologians and modern psychological studies, the contents of Hosea will be reinforced as viable literature to learn from. Despite belief in the historical legitimacy of the book, through research, we find humanity’s deepest desire is to be fully loved and fully known. Analysis of attachment theory and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs show us that the story of Hosea demonstrates our insecurities and the proper response to them.

“I Cannot Bring A Child Into This World”: Hearing And Writing I Poems With Birthstrike Testimonials, Leola Meynell

The Qualitative Report

BirthStrike for Climate was a UK-based movement whose members “striked” against having children, to demonstrate the desperate need for political action on climate change. In this article, I engage with the Listening Guide (Gilligan & Eddy, 2017) to hear, trace and construct “I poems” with BirthStrike members’ testimonial statements, which were published online between 2019-2020. My analysis focusses on how BirthStrike stories articulate the psychosocial impacts of climate change, particularly in relation to questions about having (and not having) children in times of environmental and social crises. I provide an iteration of how the Listening Guide can be applied to …

Autoethnographies Exploring The Cultural Spirit Murdering And Nurturing Of Three Minority Educators In K-12, Sara Z. Beg, Maritza Caldera, Denise Ross

Dissertations

This autoethnography sought to understand how our experiences during our K-12 journey as three minority students shaped our identities as students and our teaching style today. An autoethnography allowed us to analyze our experiences through the lens of Cultural Spirit Nurturing and Cultural Spirit Murdering. Cultural Spirit Nurturing, as we defined it, is the acceptance, respect, and inclusion of different cultures, ethnicities, nationalities, races, languages, and religions in society. We dissected our lived moments as Pakistani Muslim American, African American, and Mexican American students turned educators, defined them as Cultural Spirit Nurturing or Murdering, and bridged them with the concepts …

Publications and Research

Although not uncommon worldwide, consanguinity has been a part of Arab culture and tradition as a means to strengthen tribal blood relations. However, this type of union has been linked to inherited diseases, particularly those of a recessive nature (e.g., hemoglobinopathies). Furthermore, several recent studies have documented highly significant associations between consanguineous parentage and common multifactorial diseases, including but not limited to hypertension, mental disorders, and several cardiovascular diseases. In Iraq, the prevalence of consanguinity is very high and still on the rise. This has resulted in an increased prevalence of inherited diseases and has significant negative impacts on Iraq’s …

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can be used to non-invasively augment cognitive training. However, the benefits of tDCS may be due in part to placebo effects, which have not been well-characterized. The purpose of this study was to determine whether tDCS can have a measurable placebo effect on cognitive training and to identify potential sources of this effect. Eighty-three right-handed adults were randomly assigned to one of three groups: control (no exposure to tDCS), sham tDCS, or active tDCS. The sham and active tDCS groups were double-blinded. Each group performed 20 min of an adapted Corsi Block Tapping Task (CBTT), …

The Spirit-Murdering Of Black Students From White Educators, Brian C. Guilfoyle, Casetta D. Brown, Sarah J. Guilfoyle, Courtney D. Jude

Dissertations

In this collection of autoethnographies, four researchers explored our deeply personal experiences and encounters with racialized oppression in the form of spirit-murder. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Critical Whiteness Studies, this dissertation explores how two white educators have committed spirit-murder against Black students and how two Black educators have both experienced spirit-murder as students and have spirit-murdered their Black and Brown students as classroom teachers. We wanted to elevate our voices using counter-stories as a tenet of CRT and examples of our teaching practices. We aimed to elicit relatable suggestions to combat spirit-murdering from white educators toward Black students …

Social Order In Age Of Artificial Intelligence, Yongnian Zheng

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

While the rapid development of artificial intelligence is empowering society, it is also posing serious threats to the continuation of the traditional social order. The "de-intellectualization" function of AI has given rise to the phenomenon of "artificial ignorance", referring to the self-inflicted intellectual harm caused by the uncontrolled and excessive misuse of AI-related tools, thus causing a profound impact on the social order. The technical structural characteristics and governance structural characteristics of AI contributed to the emergence of the phenomenon of "artificial ignorance". The technical structural characteristics of AI can be summarized as highly concentrated capabilities, highly centralized control, highly …

Anthropogenic Noise Limits Resource Distribution Without Changing Social Hierarchies, S. Tidau, Mark Briffa Apr 2024

Anthropogenic Noise Limits Resource Distribution Without Changing Social Hierarchies, S. Tidau, Mark Briffa

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Increasing evidence demonstrates that anthropogenic noise is a global pollutant that threatens marine ecosystems. Mounting numbers of studies show its diverse effects on individuals and their behaviour. However, little is known about how individual changes in response to anthropogenic noise could cascade through groups and populations affecting resource distribution vital for survival and fitness. Here we test the hypotheses that anthropogenic noise could alter resource distribution, associated hierarchies and consequently individual benefits. We used groups of hermit crabs, a globally distributed model system for assessing impacts of environmental change on wildlife and measured in controlled laboratory conditions the resource distribution …
