Despite the implementation of national programs like the National Safe Motherhood Program (NSMP) that aims to improve maternal health outcomes, women in the Philippines still continuously face barriers in accessing quality maternal healthcare (MHC) due to systemic, societal, and psychological factors. Other persistent issues like poor healthcare service, insufficient understanding of health-related knowledge, and the lack of autonomy in decision making, which are especially prevalent in underserved communities, further discourage women from seeking care. This study aims to investigate these barriers and their impact on the overall well-being of mothers from Miriam College's partnered communities, like Kaingin 1. To explore …

The anonymity afforded by university freedom walls has proliferated the spread of information and digital gossip, actively shaping ideologies surrounding campus hierarchies—an influence that remains critically underexplored in academic research. This study addresses that gap by seeking to understand how freedom walls function as a form of discourse that constructs and negotiates hierarchical ideologies within academic communities. It analyzes 18 purposively sampled posts from the three most followed Facebook freedom walls of universities in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), namely the University of the Philippines Diliman (UP), National University (NU), and Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU). Using …

Traffic congestion is a widespread issue for commuters, influenced by multiple factors and variables. One such area affected is Laguna Boulevard, a critical road connecting multiple essential facilities in Biñan and Sta. Rosa, including Laguna Technopark and educational institutions like De La Salle University Laguna Campus and Caritas Don Bosco School. The roadway experiences significant congestion during peak hours due to high traffic volumes along segments and intersections impacted by uncoordinated road expansions, inconsistent transitions between one-way and two-way flows, limited sight distances, and obstructive roadside elements that collectively disrupt vehicular movement and compromise safety. This study proposes a replanned …

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
In 2023, the three-decade territorial dispute between the cities of Makati and Taguig ended when the Supreme Court ruled to transfer the ten Embo barangays to the latter. One significant consequence of this ruling is the discontinuation of assistance to former Makati residents, particularly healthcare benefits. Understanding how this ruling affects residents’ experiences can provide insights for policy recommendations promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 16. This phenomenological study, grounded in the Adapted Levesque’s Conceptual Framework, gathered data from six participants who were at least 10-year residents of Embo barangay and beneficiaries of Makati and Taguig public …

Exploration Of Adventure-Based Counseling And Its Impact On The Self-Concept Of At-Risk Youth, Kendall Kern, Mary Bess Pannel, Todd Davis, Thales Barbosa
Journal of Academic Underperformance
Background: Integrating experiential therapy techniques with physical activity and nature improves aspects of self-concept: social connectedness, resilience, and healthy coping skills in the short-term for at-risk, underperforming youth (Kraft & Cornelius-White, 2020). Kraft and Cornelius-White (2020) found that wilderness therapy counselors that taught communication skills and prioritized “group cohesion in group therapy” led to positive “changes to self-concept” (p. 350-351). Purpose: The researchers hypothesize that community-based adventure therapy will have a positive impact on the self-concept in at-risk, rural youth. Methodology/Approach: The researchers utilized a quasi-experimental model to assess the impact of adventure therapy on rural at-risk youth (N~6) after …

Globalization has significantly impacted education in the Philippines, notably with the influx of international students coming into the country for educational opportunities. This phenomenon has led to numerous studies examining the various aspects of their experiences, such as their cultural adaptation processes, academic difficulties, and economic contributions. However, their interpersonal relationships, particularly their more intimate connections, have been largely overlooked. This study aims to probe into this, focusing on the dynamics, navigation strategies, and external influences that shape these relationships. Utilizing both online and face-to-face interviews, as well as online surveys, the experiences of nine (9) intercultural couples, each of …

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
Media plays a crucial role in shaping public perceptions of gender and sexuality, yet representations of queer female characters in Philippine cinema remain underexplored. While portrayals of bakla characters have been widely studied, lesbian narratives often remain sidelined or framed through limited, stereotypical lenses. This lack of nuanced representation perpetuates narrow understandings of queer identity and reinforces gendered power structures within Philippine society. This research examines lesbian characters in the films Baka Bukas (2016) and Si Chedeng at Si Apple (2017), using Herman’s Narrative Framework and Intersectionality Theory. The study found that both films construct lesbian identities within specific socio-cultural …

This study examines how Filipino women evaluate physical attractiveness, likeability, and social competence based on variations in skin color and body build—traits shaped by colonial legacies and reinforced by contemporary media. A 2×2 factorial experimental design was used, involving 180 female college students (ages 18–25), who rated target images that varied by skin color (light vs. dark) and body build (slim vs. large). While neither skin color nor body build alone had a significant main effect on perceptions of attractiveness, a significant interaction emerged: slim, dark-skinned individuals were rated more attractive than their light-skinned counterparts, whereas light-skinned individuals were preferred …

Robbing The Cradle: Georgia's Battle To Enact "Raise The Age" Legislation Through Hb 462, Elizabeth Hammond
Georgia Criminal Law Review
In the state of Georgia, seventeen-year-olds are not old enough under the law to vote or consume alcohol and tobacco products. Despite this, they are old enough to be criminally tried as adults. Georgia is one of three states that continues to process seventeen-year-old juvenile offenders through the criminal justice system instead of juvenile court. In September 2023, forty-five juveniles were prosecuted as adults and incarcerated in Georgia prisons. This is significant because juvenile offenders experience better outcomes when they are processed through the juvenile court system because juvenile courts account for a youth’s “naturally high capacity for change and …

The Shadow Pandemic: The Response To Domestic Violence In The Wake Of Covid-19 And What We Can Carry Forward, Presley Sneed
Georgia Criminal Law Review
When the COVID-19 virus brought the pandemic to the United States in March of 2020, the legal system was not prepared for the increase in domestic and intimate partner violence that would follow. The United Nations (UN) later identified this social phenomenon as a second pandemic, a “shadow pandemic” that resulted from an increase in stay-at-home orders and a decrease in support services for victims. By the end of 2021, forty-five percent of women globally reported either they themselves or a woman they know had experienced some form of domestic or intimate partner violence since the emergence of COVID-19. One …
Time To Put Down Iq Testing: Analyzing The Unreliability Of Iq Testing In Capital Offenses, Nik Giyanani
Time To Put Down Iq Testing: Analyzing The Unreliability Of Iq Testing In Capital Offenses, Nik Giyanani
Georgia Criminal Law Review
Georgia sentences individuals with intellectual disability (“ID”) to death at an alarming rate. As a result, Georgia has likely executed individuals with ID in violation of the United States Constitution already. These unjust executions are a result of the impossibly high “beyond a reasonable doubt” burden of proof that capital defendants in only Georgia must meet to prove they are intellectually disabled. One large hurdle for defendants attempting to meet this standard is the unreliability of IQ testing. IQ testing, a soft science, provides inconsistent results due to ever-changing variables in the testing process. Additionally, the generally accepted threshold IQ …
Misreading The Federal Child Pornography Statutes, Owen Senders
Misreading The Federal Child Pornography Statutes, Owen Senders
Georgia Criminal Law Review
For the past 40 years, federal courts have committed two grievous textual errors in interpreting the federal child-pornography statutes and sentencing guidelines. These errors have caused hundreds of wrongful convictions—many the bases for decades-long sentences—and have produced a body of caselaw that is profoundly incoherent and in direct conflict with basic tenets of First Amendment doctrine. They have also likely endangered children. This article identifies these errors, surveys their consequences, and suggests legal arguments for people charged or convicted under the child-pornography statutes.
The first error impacts the application of all of the federal child-pornography statutes and sentencing guidelines. These …

Moving A Maxillary Incisor Across The Midline For Substitution Of Contralateral Missing Incisor In A Multiple Anterior Teeth Missing Patient, Ling-Yu Huang, Chun-Liang Kuo, Chun-Hsiu Yang, Ting-Wei Liu
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Loss of permanent maxillary incisor causes a significant esthetic problem, and there are various treatment options for rehabilitation. Moving the contralateral tooth across the facial midline for substitution of missing tooth is a possible treatment alternative for closing the maxillary anterior space.
This report presents an unusual treatment for a bimaxillary protrusion patient who typically requires premolar extraction to improve the convex profile. However, due to multiple missing anterior teeth, the left maxillary central incisor was moved across the facial midline to substitute the absent contralateral tooth, resulting in an improved profile after treatment.
The case was an 18-year-old female …

Rebooting A Foundational Reading Program With Recent Evidence From The Science Of Reading, Kate Franz, Bong Gee Jang
The Language and Literacy Spectrum
The Science of Reading (SOR) movement has reshaped literacy education, emphasizing evidence-based instructional materials and practices. School districts have been propelled to evaluate existing instructional materials and to consider adopting new reading programs. This article examines how Road to Reading (RTR), an evidence-based program that aligns with the SOR focus on phonics and word recognition, can be updated to reflect newer research. Rather than a full overhaul, this paper proposes a “reboot”— targeted updates that refine the five-step lesson structure. Key improvements include expanded assessments, phonemic awareness integration, motivational supports, and instructional scaffolds to better meet diverse learner needs. These targeted …

The Language and Literacy Spectrum
Students in U.S. elementary schools continue to experience difficulty learning to read, with some attributing these difficulties to a lack of alignment with the Science of Reading (SOR). Social media plays a prominent role in disseminating information about the SOR, serving as a platform for discussion and debate that reflects many tenets of effective online professional development (OPD). The current study examines how one group of educators on social media sought out and discussed information related to the SOR. Content analysis was utilized to determine how contributors engaged with the group and what pedagogical content knowledge and SOR topics were …

Exploring Culturally Informed Approaches To Book Read-Aloud With Young Children, Raquel Plotka
The Language and Literacy Spectrum
Early childhood is a critical period for language and literacy development. One-way adults introduce children to the world of books is through picture books read-aloud. Adults from different cultural background engage in this activity differently, and to date, the early childhood field has emphasized a constructivist approach to book reading typical in individualistic cultures. Other approaches to reading books that are common in collectivist cultures have not been explored. The present study investigated the reading styles teachers (n = 40) use in naturalistic settings and compared the advantages of using individualistic versus collectivist styles related to children participation and …
