The Kamikaze Throughline—U.S. Fleet Air Defense From Imperial Japan To Drones, Tyler A. Pitrof

Naval War College Review

Since World War II, fleet air defense has been organized around the principle of engaging threats as far out from the fleet as possible, motivated by early failures to engage the kamikaze threat. This approach remains as vital as ever and progressively more challenging in the face of the contemporary threats posed by cruise missiles and—increasingly—by drone warfare.

Phantom Tax Loopholes, Emily Cauble

Florida Tax Review

This Article reports the results of a new survey of 726 U.S. adults designed to gauge people’s intuitions about tax law. Survey respondents consider several scenarios. In each scenario, the survey describes two ways that parties to a transaction can achieve their non-tax objectives. The two available routes are equivalent from a non-tax perspective. The survey asks respondents to provide their best guess about whether the two routes will produce the same or different U.S. federal income tax consequences. The survey asks respondents to rate on a five-point scale how confident they are that their answer is correct and to …

The Association Between Fairness And Judicial Decision-Making: Evidence From Tax Law, Jonathan Farrar, Harjot Mehmi

Florida Tax Review

Empirical literature on judicial decision-making has not yet considered the association between the normative value of fairness and judges’ decisions. Using a sample of tax cases at the Tax Court of Canada (2010–2019) containing 4,420 disputes, we investigate whether a litigant is significantly more likely to obtain a favorable outcome if there is a reference to fairness in the court judgment. Compared to disputes without a mention of fairness in the court judgment, disputes with any mention of fairness have a 51% greater likelihood of a successful outcome. Notably, even when a court judgment mentions fairness not clearly in favor …

Journal of Graduate Education Research

Recent data published by the Council of Graduate Schools indicates approximately 40% of students who begin doctoral coursework do not complete their degree. This asserts the need for graduate schools to examine ways in which they can support their doctoral student population, particularly through the dissertation writing process. The purpose of this autoethnographic study was to explore two methods of dissertation writing support: a dissertation writing group sponsored by a graduate school and independent dissertation coaching services. The article highlights key findings from each support system and provides implications for dissertation writing group facilitators, dissertation coaches, and graduate schools.

The Emergence Of Ai Chatbots In Education, Trek Martin

Journal of Graduate Education Research

The recent advent of popular AI applications in educational contexts has sparked renewed interest in the question of AI and guided learning platforms as teaching tools. What are the possibilities for learning? In the attempt to answer that question, limitations of the field must be brought to full attention, as well an understanding of whether or not those limitations will continue into the immediate future; this research examines the technical evolution of artificial intelligence in education, from early symbolic reasoning systems to modern machine-learning-based chatbots. It then examines that evolution in terms of the key challenges it faced throughout, and …

Pandering With Worksheets: Graduate Professors’ Pedagogies, Chris Mayer Aug 2025

Pandering With Worksheets: Graduate Professors’ Pedagogies, Chris Mayer

Journal of Graduate Education Research

This exploratory, arts-based study investigates how three tenured professors in a humanities department conceptualize graduate-level teaching and envision their ideal graduate classrooms. Through semi-structured interviews, qualitative coding, and arts-based interpretation, the study identifies three key tensions in their pedagogical thinking: balancing independence and structure, the stigma surrounding “undergraddy” approaches, and valuing long-term intellectual struggle as a means to master threshold concepts. Despite clear visions for ideal pedagogies, professors face significant barriers to implementing them, including time constraints and entrenched norms about what graduate education “ought” to look like. Findings suggest that despite strong pedagogical insight, professors struggle to bridge the …

Journal of Graduate Education Research

International students make important contributions to the US academic landscape and broader society; however, their numbers continue to decline in the face of an unwelcoming and unsupportive environment compared to their counterparts worldwide. This manuscript presents findings from a student satisfaction survey (n = 423) that included both multiple-choice and open-ended questions. We used the ecological model and the Spanning Systems Model as a framework, looking at how individual, community, institutional, and larger societal factors impacted the experiences of international students in the US. For quantitative analysis, hierarchical multiple linear regressions were conducted to examine factors associated with student satisfaction. …

Message In A Bottle, Saptarshi Biswas Aug 2025

Message In A Bottle, Saptarshi Biswas

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

The title of the image is inspired by a famous old song by the British rock band The Police. The song featured Sting’s evocative lyrics and captures a profound sense of isolation and longing. The song tells the story of a castaway who sends out a distress signal, only to discover that he is not alone in his feelings of loneliness. Through its haunting melody and rhythmic pulse, the track conveys themes of connection and the human experience, illustrating how, despite physical separation, people share similar struggles and emotions. The metaphor of the bottle serves as a poignant reminder of …

“Good Enough Mother”: Accepting The Imperfections Of Motherhood In Medicine, France M. Leandre Aug 2025

“Good Enough Mother”: Accepting The Imperfections Of Motherhood In Medicine, France M. Leandre

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

This article draws attention to Winnicott's concept of the “good enough mother” and how it can be applied to those in medicine. It emphasizes that no one is perfect, and our children learn best from our imperfections. I was reminded of that while kayaking on the Lost Spring Lake in Ocala, FL, and took this picture. If we can find beauty in nature’s imperfections, we can also find it within our own imperfections.

Multi-Genre Storytelling: Creating An Eclectic Screenplay, Jason Daniel Faull

Masters Theses

Eclectic storytelling can encompass multiple genres. An attempt to combine the storytelling elements and genres of prequel, sequel, metafiction, and historical fiction into one story occurs in the screenplay The Legend of Eglantine Price. This screenplay is an attempt to combine successful storytelling genres to continue the story about the character Eglantine Price, created first by Mary Norton in her publication of The Magic Bed-knob (1945), and later with Walt Disney’s film adaptation Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971). The research provided demonstrates the possibility of successfully crafting each of these genres into one screenplay which pushes the story of Eglantine, a …

Understanding The Ontological Argument Through Love: The Paradox Between Faith And Reason, Bill Goodson Aug 2025

Understanding The Ontological Argument Through Love: The Paradox Between Faith And Reason, Bill Goodson

Masters Theses

This thesis argues that while the ontological argument as presented by Saint Anselm of Canterbury offers a formal logical explanation for the existence of God, love is presented as the bridge that enables the skeptic and the believer to engage the argument from a relational and experiential perspective in joining faith and reason through God’s divine love. The paradox found therein is that love, being kind, generous, and caring, initially appears to be too soft for the hard truth and sheer facts of reason. The calling of the theologian is to expose the good news of his faith, and his …

Peaceful Politics According To Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him The Foundations And Manifestations, Thaer Hassan Dhahi Mazhir Aug 2025

Peaceful Politics According To Imam Ali, Peace Be Upon Him The Foundations And Manifestations, Thaer Hassan Dhahi Mazhir

NJF Islamic University Journal

Peace is inseparable from Islam in terms of legislation, as contained in the Muhammadan Sharia in all its aspects and at various levels, and in terms of behavior in practical life, as it is the established value, morality, and methodology upon which true Islamic behavior is distinguished from un-Islamic behavior. Even if an individual or group is characterized by the claim and adherence to the attribute of Islam, Islam, in its comprehensive normative structure, does not stop at the limits of a claim without evidence to prove its veracity. What this study has concluded is that peace is an inherent …

The Adopted Daughter Of Revelation, Fatimah Al-Zahra (Peace Be Upon Her) Between Revelation And Rationality, Mahmood Shakir Alkhafagi Aug 2025

The Adopted Daughter Of Revelation, Fatimah Al-Zahra (Peace Be Upon Her) Between Revelation And Rationality, Mahmood Shakir Alkhafagi

NJF Islamic University Journal

This study explores the unique status of Fatimah al-Zahra (peace be upon her), the daughter of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), through the dual lenses of divine revelation and rational philosophy. It argues that her infallibility, authority, and role in Islamic history are not only rooted in prophetic lineage but also reinforced by rational principles intrinsic to Islamic epistemology. Drawing on Qur’anic verses, Hadiths, and classical Islamic scholarship, the paper examines how Fatimah represents a convergence between abstract reason and cognitive rationality, and how divine revelation elevated her to a status of spiritual and moral infallibility. …

Faculty Publications

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is a key index of parasympathetic function and environmental adaptability. Lower resting RSA has been linked to preterm (PT) birth in infancy and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in childhood, yet RSA across the first 2 years in young infants born PT or later diagnosed with ASD remains unknown. This study examined resting RSA and mean interbeat interval (IBI) development from 1 to 24 months in infants at varying ASD likelihoods, including infant siblings of children with ASD and those born PT. A longitudinal design tracked resting RSA and mean IBI in 137 infants from 1 to …
