Framework For Ethical Worldbuilding With Solidarity-Driven Co-Design, Laura Cechanowicz, Steven Zuiker, Michelle Jordan, Ed Finn, Ruth Wylie
Learn X Design Conference Series
Diversity is a fundamental resource in co-design processes; however, centering wide-ranging participants around a design rather than individual, disciplinary, or other forms of expertise can be challenging. Expanding the scope of design to include the entanglements of temporality and community amplifies these challenges. Addressing these challenges requires a reconfiguration of the fundamental relationships between designers, researchers, research participants, collaborators, and the land and place where research and design outcomes occur, including a deeper form of engagement with communities. Despite the substantial groundwork existing approaches have developed, emerging efforts challenge us to conceptualize an ethical approach for recognizing, working with, and …

Scale Up: Enabling Definitional Discussion In Graphic Design Using A Visual Analogue Scale (Vas), Alis Iacob, Meherunisa Baig
Learn X Design Conference Series
This letter aims to highlight some of the definitional challenges in graphic design research. The authors suggest using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), a psychometric tool traditionally employed in psychology, as a prompt for facilitating discussions around the definition of graphic design. By anchoring the scale's endpoints with the divisive concepts of "form" and "function," the proposal seeks to contextualise these diverse opinions within the historical and current complexities involved in defining graphic design. According to the literature, ambiguous viewpoints often emerge from the nature of the discipline and its evolving practices, perspectives which are frequently influenced by socio-cultural, political, …

From Interviews With Practitioners To Distributed Design Knowledge, Ladislava Zbiejczuk Suchá, Roman Sellner Novotný
Learn X Design Conference Series
Design education faces ongoing challenges in bridging the gap between theory and practice. This paper explores how practitioner voices can serve as a critical educational resource by fostering distributed and experiential learning. Using a collection of interviews conducted by students of the Information Services Design program at Masaryk University and published on Medium, this study illustrates how engaging with real-world design narratives can promote reflexivity, critical thinking, and ethical awareness in future designers. By integrating practitioner insights, students move beyond learning static epistemologies and methods toward developing adaptive approaches to complex challenges. This paper presents a model for incorporating practitioner …
Mindful Design And Techno-Empathy. Toward A Better Tomorrow, Dominika Sobolewska
Mindful Design And Techno-Empathy. Toward A Better Tomorrow, Dominika Sobolewska
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper explores the integration of techno-empathy and mindful design as tools for addressing global challenges through speculative storytelling and interdisciplinary collaboration. Drawing on principles advocated by Neri Oxman and others, it positions design as a bridge between technological progress and imaginative, socially engaged practices. Design is presented not merely a as a medium of representation, but as a research method, persuasive tool, and mode of speculative fabulation—capable of crafting alternative futures through material and interactive experimentation. Mindful Design Studio (MDS) at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art & Design exemplifies these principles by emphasizing simple interactive technologies that create …
From Diamonds To Braids: New Metaphors For Teaching Transformative Design, Melanie Kahl
From Diamonds To Braids: New Metaphors For Teaching Transformative Design, Melanie Kahl
Learn X Design Conference Series
Drawing from my experience as a hybrid practitioner-educator, this pedagogical statement examines how we teach the invisible dimensions of transformative design. While traditional design process diagrams and metaphors—from squiggles to diamonds—effectively structure design activities, they fall short in teaching students how to facilitate transformative design processes. I propose braiding as a complementary cross-cultural metaphor that illuminates the concurrent processes woven through design work. I define four fundamental strands that expert practitioners weave into complex design processes: learning (growing capacity), narrative (weaving stories), relationships (growing connections and trust), and change (rehearsing transformation). This framework emerged from my practice of teaching students …

Connecting The Dots Through Visuals-Driven Data Collection, Carly Hagins, Verena Paepcke-Hjeltness, Benjamin Bush
Learn X Design Conference Series
This research explores career trajectories in an effort to increase diversity in design. It connects designers to their past by way of visually telling their story, to discover hidden patterns and shared experiences. This research disrupts traditional data collection by leveraging a visual prompting template which has been tested through a series of interactive, hands-on workshops. The template served as a catalyst, encouraging designers to articulate and visually depict their career journeys. This study investigates how designers engaged with this template and the subsequent development of their narratives, in order to solicit deeper connections to their career paths. It scrutinizes …
Let’S Figure This Out Together: Building Social Support Through Cross-Pollinative Design Studio Pedagogy, Zhengping Liow, Ye Zhang
Let’S Figure This Out Together: Building Social Support Through Cross-Pollinative Design Studio Pedagogy, Zhengping Liow, Ye Zhang
Learn X Design Conference Series
In an era characterised by global interconnectedness and complexity, integrating diverse perspectives through cross-pollinative design processes has become paramount. However, the unidirectional, the ubiquitous One-on-One Master-Apprentice design studio pedagogy has negated the potential of Social Support towards a divergent and explorative design process. This study discussed the impact of social support on academic scores of beginning design students in two district studio pedagogical frameworks: the traditional One-on-One Master-Apprentice model and the experimental Cross-pollinative Team Learning (CTL) studio pedagogy. With a longitudinal quantitative Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) design, participants’ perceptions of Social Support as Teacher-student relationship (TSR) and Student-student relationship (SSR) …
The Idea Design Scaffold: Empowering Novice Designers With Systemic And Sustainable Design Education, Ioannis Xenakis, Despoina Grigoreli
The Idea Design Scaffold: Empowering Novice Designers With Systemic And Sustainable Design Education, Ioannis Xenakis, Despoina Grigoreli
Learn X Design Conference Series
Designing for complex sociotechnical systems challenges novice designers, requiring them to align abstract systemic priorities with actionable functional goals. The IDEA Design Scaffold (IDEAS) addresses this by integrating hierarchical goal-setting, systemic affordances (SysAf), and iterative feedback loops into a structured framework. At its core, the Iterative Innovation Cycle (IIC) guides designers through iterative exploration and refinement, enabling the evolution of foundational affordances into innovative solutions that balance operational clarity with systemic priorities. IDEAS organizes design goals across Systemic Levels (SL), helping students deconstruct high-level objectives into actionable subgoals while maintaining systemic alignment. SysAf emerges dynamically, linking functional feasibility with broader …

Social Action, Service Learning, And Youth Development, Joan Arches
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
University service-learning students worked with middle school youth in a social change project addressing positive youth development and civic engagement. Based on their knowledge of positive youth development theory and British Social Action, they facilitated a weekly group in which the youth identified combatting oppression by teachers (adultism) for their project. They discussed the problem, designed surveys, analyzed the data, and presented their findings. The youth demonstrated individual competencies and connected with adults while they learned to work collectively in a community change project.
Service Learning Students’ Perceptions Of Citizenship, Audrey Faye Falk
Service Learning Students’ Perceptions Of Citizenship, Audrey Faye Falk
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
This study examines the conceptions of citizenship held by students engaged in a service learning course. Open-ended responses to instructor-developed surveys were analyzed. Results indicated that students primarily viewed good citizenship in terms of community service; however, their ideas about service were limited to passive kinds of service such as helping others and volunteering, rather than active kinds of service such as community organizing. Results were compared with conceptions of citizenship held by students engaged in another course with a smaller volunteering component. Opportunities for broadening service learning students’ understanding of citizenship are discussed.

Engagement Of Community Health Workers In The Research Enterprise: A Survey Of Organizations And The Research Roles Given Chws, Holly C. Felix, Delia Lee, Kathryn Stewart, Paul G. Greene
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
Community health workers (CHWs) have long been engaged by organizations to assist underserved populations with unmet health-related needs. CHWs’ roles in effectively addressing service and health barriers—for example, through navigation and health promotion—are well established. Few published studies address how the skills and roles of CHWs are applied to support research, though similar barriers exist. To address this gap, we surveyed CHW programs about the extent and type of CHW involvement supporting research.

Campus-community partnerships are increasingly recognized as important parts of curricula and have become central to the missions of many colleges. Yet while the notion of service is becoming more prominent at the institutional level, the number of faculty who are actually teaching community-engaged courses is alarmingly low. This paper addresses the problem of inadequate faculty participation in campus-community partnerships through the case study analysis of the pathways that brought six faculty members from different backgrounds and disciplines into the world of the engaged classroom. From the stories of individual faculty members, a model of involvement emerged that illustrates a common …

For faculty committed to socially responsible community engagement, the process of interdisciplinary course design and assessment can be charged and challenging. At Cabrini College, faculty are involved in precisely this kind of work as part of the College's new core curriculum, Justice Matters. Our study of two connected interdisciplinary courses marks a shift in conceptual models: how we developed from a “community service learning (CSL) approach into a participatory, collective process that embeds community based research (CBR) protocols more intentionally and explicitly. Additionally, the two linked courses illustrate how interdisciplinarity, when combined with CBR best practices, can offer powerful solutions …

Community-Based Learning And Social Capital: Exploring Student Attitudes And Perceptions Of Connectedness To Campus And Diverse Communities, August John Hoffman
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
Community service activities, civic engagement, and volunteer services have been identified as key elements in improving how individuals relate and communicate with each other in society. Social capital also has been described as a highly useful form of social networking that empowers community members to collectively use each other as potential resources. The current study explored how participants from non-traditional backgrounds (i.e., ethnicity, culture, and age) completed a variety of interethnic community service activities. We hypothesized that increased exposure with members of diverse ethnic groups through community service activities would show reductions in ethnocentric attitudes and also show increases in …

How Students Learn In A Service-Learning Course: A Quasi-Experimental Field Study Of Generative Learning, Valerie I. Sessa, Dana K. Natale, Manuel London, Courtney A. Hopkins
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
Sessa and London’s (2005, 2006) continuous learning model was used to generate hypotheses suggesting that service-learning courses trigger student engagement in generative learning processes moderated by the students’ prior experience and that engagement in generative learning behaviors impact learning outcomes. 127 students in eight courses participated in a quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group design with a pre-test and two post-tests. Results partially support hypotheses. Implications for theory development, future research, and service learning pedagogy are discussed.
