Youth Sex Trafficking: From Pathways To Prevention, Katelyn M. Deines
Youth Sex Trafficking: From Pathways To Prevention, Katelyn M. Deines
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Sex trafficking affects an estimated 300,000 American children per year with a child sold every two minutes. Child sex trafficking is broadly defined as the exchange of something of value for sexual relations with a child/minor. The commercial sexual exploitation of children and domestic minor sex trafficking occur across the United States and violates the rights and health of many youth and other vulnerable and/or marginalized groups. Both familial traffickers and nonfamilial traffickers manipulate and control their victims with similar strategies. This poster outlines the prevalence of child sex trafficking, pathways into adult sex work, and offers guidance on preventing …

Zero Tolerance Policies In Schools & Subsequent Outcomes, Annalise Loucks
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Zero tolerance policies refer to policies and practices that disproportionately push marginalized students out of classrooms and into the criminal justice system. These patterns contribute to long-term negative outcomes, including higher dropout rates, increased incarceration, and reduced economic and social opportunities.

Asynchronous Scenario-Based Training Resources For Domestic And International Mentors, Benjamin W. Davis
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
The following design report details the development of training resources for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help in-field mentors learn and improve specific job tasks. In 2025, the client hired over 400 new employees as it expanded to support regions around the globe. This necessitated enhanced training resources which mentors could access on demand during their weekly professional development time. In response, I developed and delivered asynchronous training materials through an internal SharePoint page. These materials include a self-assessment, instructional videos, practice activities in Microsoft PowerPoint modules, and job aids.
This report begins with a description …

Institute on Aging Publications
INTRODUCTION:Walking the Talk for Dementia (WTD) convenes people from every continent and multiple perspectives, including people with lived experience, in a 40- km walk followed by a 2-day symposium. The aim is collective reflective dialogue about dementia stigma without the burden of professional hierarchies.
METHODS: Qualitative reflections during and immediately following the walk were analyzed using content analysis to identify common themes.
RESULTS: Three themes demonstrate an evolution of perspectives about dementia and stigma: “meeting the person not the label”, “a community in solidarity”, and “I wasn’t treated like I was broken, and I wasn’t broken.”
DISCUSSION: WTD created an …
The Impact Of Emotional Intelligence In C-Suite Executives On Employee Motivation And Voluntary Turnover In Medium-Sized Healthcare Organizations In The United States, Pujan Desai
Harrisburg University Dissertations and Theses
This quantitative study sought to determine whether emotionally intelligent behaviors exhibited by C-suite executives in medium-sized US healthcare businesses were linked to increased employee motivation and decreased retention related outcomes rates. Employee burnout, staffing shortages, and workforce instability were just a few of the persistent issues facing healthcare businesses that highlighted how crucial good executive leadership was to be fostering organizational sustainability. Few empirical studies had examined emotional intelligence's influence at the C-suite level in healthcare organizations, even though it was widely acknowledged as a crucial component of good leadership. Research on the function of executive emotional intelligence and how …

Early Childhood Education And Sustainability: An Analysis Of Professional Development Needs For Teachers In Chile, Marlene C. Fermín González, Maria Valdivieso Aguilera, Ada Echenique Arguinzones
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The research is situated within studies that recognize Initial Teacher Education (ITE) for early childhood educators as key to advancing Education for Sustainability (Evans et al., 2022; Davis & Davis, 2021; Weldemariam, 2022) and that highlight the value of play and active pedagogy in promoting agency and sustainable citizenship from early childhood (Elliott et al., 2020; Engdahl, 2021). Its purpose was to identify the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that scientific evidence, regulatory frameworks, and experts consider essential for educators in the field of Early Childhood Education for Sustainability (ECEfS). Through a methodological approach combining documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews, an …

Developing A Bilingual Education Program For Middle Schools In Richland School District 01: Promoting Literacy Through Culturally-Relevant Pedagogy, Paige E. Swanson
Caroliniana Undergraduate Research Journal
The following study explores how bilingual and immersive language learning programs can enhance multi-subject literacy and academic engagement among at-risk African American middle school students in Richland County School District One (R01) in Columbia, South Carolina. Through a qualitative thematic analysis utilizing a literature review of fifty sources that explore education, linguistics, and psychology, the research identifies intersections between bilingual education, culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP), and literacy development in at-risk youth populations. Six themes were revealed by the analysis. From these themes, the results conclude that African American students experience greater academic success when classroom instruction integrates their cultural identities, …
Mister President & May It Please The Executive: Causal Barriers To Court-Packing, Mason Smith
Mister President & May It Please The Executive: Causal Barriers To Court-Packing, Mason Smith
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
As attacks on democracy have become increasingly ubiquitous, scholarship has begun to shed light on a common, effective, and inimical means of subverting governments accountable to the masses: court-packing. So, how can democracies prevent court-packing? Among many implicit causal theories taken from the extant research, which hasn’t directly tackled this problem, two seem the most plausible and ripe for analysis, suggesting that court-packing’s success turns on either the strength (i) of institutional constraints or (ii) of domestic judicial norms. To see which theory works better in practice, I use a narrowly tailored iteration of comparative process tracing, as it best …
Defining The Meta-Story Of Heroism Science: Initiation, Formation, And Governance In An Emerging Discipline, Peter Bray
Defining The Meta-Story Of Heroism Science: Initiation, Formation, And Governance In An Emerging Discipline, Peter Bray
Heroism Science
This article traces the meta-story of the journal Heroism Science across Volumes 1–10 by treating the publication record as a living narrative of field formation. Using an eight-dimension decoding framework (D1–D8), it argues that the journal’s development is best understood as a braided trajectory in which methodological maturation and theoretical maturation co-evolve. Special issues function as turning points: downside dynamics, whistleblowing, and heroic screens formalize consequence sensitivity and contestation, while later conference and legacy issues consolidate pluralism and reflexive ethics. The article contributes (a) an explicit coding and audit method for reading a journal as a field-forming narrative and (b) …

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be famous? The money, adoration, and opportunities all sound exciting; however, they come with drawbacks that might poison your idea of fame. In my poster, I investigate why people want to be famous and the psychology behind it, as well as the downsides of fame, such as privacy invasion, mental health struggles, and mistreatment of celebrities. I did this by consulting research articles, celebrities’ public interviews, and pieces detailing their stories. This investigation led me down a rabbit hole of heartbreaking stories and difficult struggles, revealing a hidden side of …

The Moderating Role Of Sadism And Psychopathy In The Relationship Between Stress And Malevolent Creativity, Kaitlin A. Dixon, Dr. Elizabeth Mancuso, Dr. Janet Trammell
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Malevolent creativity is creating original ideas with an intent to harm others. It is also associated with aggression and anger-inducing situations. To date, no research has examined stress as a potential trigger for malevolent creativity. We hypothesized higher stress would increase malevolent creativity (H1). Malevolent creativity is associated with the personality traits of the dark triad, psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism. The dark tetrad expanded the dark triad by adding sadism. Sadism and psychopathy are often considered the most aggressive dark tetrad traits. We hypothesized sadism and psychopathy would separately moderate the relationship between stress and malevolent creativity (H2, H3). Participants …

The Role Of Political Orientation In The Relationship Between Masculinity Threat And Pain, Bethany Kronlund, Randy Corpuz Ph.D., Dr. Elizabeth Mancuso
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
This experimental study aimed to explore whether political orientation might moderate the relationship between threatened masculinity and pain tolerance among 128 college men. Research has shown that the manipulation of gender stereotypes and how it affects pain tolerance in men has yielded mixed results. We administered a bogus gender knowledge test with fake feedback placing participants into either a masculinity threatening condition or masculinity affirming condition. This was followed by a pain tolerance test using a pressure algometer, where pain tolerance, pain threshold, perceived unpleasantness, and perceived painfulness were recorded. We hypothesized that men in the threatened masculinity condition would …

Sense Of Social Belonging, Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help, And Psychological Distress Among Sexual And Gender Minority Students At Christian Colleges And Universities, Alethia Winley, Elizabeth Mancuso, Steve Rouse
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Sexual and gender minority individuals (SGMs) often report more mental health struggles than their cisgender and heterosexual (cis-het) counterparts, as described by minority stress theory. At the same time, research shows that religiosity is associated with fewer mental health struggles. This study examined one intersection of these topics among SGM students at Christian institutions of higher learning by testing if religiosity moderated the relationship between SGM status and psychological distress, social belonging, and attitudes toward seeking help. The sample consisted of 203 students, including 70 SGMs, from 38 American Christian institutions of higher learning. Consistent with past research, SGMs reported …
Evaluating Brief Intervention Effectiveness On Sexual Assault Stigma And Empathy Considering Culture Of Honor, Hannora Race, Dr. Elizabeth Mancuso, Randy Corpuz Ph.D.
Evaluating Brief Intervention Effectiveness On Sexual Assault Stigma And Empathy Considering Culture Of Honor, Hannora Race, Dr. Elizabeth Mancuso, Randy Corpuz Ph.D.
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Sexual assault stigma remains a barrier to reporting and help-seeking. This study examined whether culture of honor predicts sexual assault attitudes and whether brief interventions could reduce stigma. Participants (N = 189) completed measures before and after watching educational, empathy, or control videos. Social honor predicted lower stigma and rape myth acceptance, while family and feminine honor predicted greater rape myth acceptance. Only the education condition significantly reduced self-stigma. Culture of honor did not moderate intervention effectiveness. Brief educational interventions can reduce self-stigma but may be insufficient to shift broader attitudes, suggesting the need for more intensive, culturally-tailored program research.

The Role of the "Indulgent Mindset" as a Modulator for Neuropsychiatric Biomarkers and Self-Reported Mental Wellbeing
Objective: Limited understanding persists regarding how an "indulgent mindset" about food shapes neuropsychiatric outcomes. Building on the "milkshake study" demonstrating that mindset modulates ghrelin response independent of nutritional content, this pilot study examines whether an indulgent mindset intervention affects neuropsychiatric biomarkers and mental wellbeing.
Methods: Women ages 19-65 (n=35; intervention n=17, control n=18) completed a 6-month randomized trial with baseline and post-intervention assessments including 3-day food diaries, mental wellbeing questionnaires, and comprehensive metabolomics (Iollo panel across mental health, metabolic health, gut microbiome, brain health, …

The Role Of Religiosity In Moderating The Relationship Between Social Media-Induced Upward Social Comparison And State Self-Esteem, Cade Matthias Swearingen, Cindy Miller-Perrin, Elizabeth Mancuso
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
The purpose of this study was to examine whether religiosity was a moderator in the relationship between social media induced upward social comparison and state self-esteem. Festinger’s social comparison theory suggests that upward social comparison negatively impacts self-esteem due to comparing oneself to someone perceived as better. It was hypothesized that individuals experiencing an upward social comparison social media condition would experience greater decreases in state self-esteem than individuals experiencing a lateral social comparison social media condition, and this effect would be moderated by strength of religious faith, such that stronger religious faith would be associated with less decreases in …

Investigating Best Practices In Diagnostic Reasoning And Differential Diagnosis: Implications For Occupational Therapy, Frank Czuba Drot, Otr/L, Laila Atra-Yassin Ots, Cassidy Green Ots, Shaylynn Krause Ots, Stephanie Petersen Ots, Alisa Robinson
Research Days
Diagnostic Reasoning and Differential Diagnosis (DD) are increasingly vital in occupational therapy (OT) practice as direct access legislation expands evaluative responsibilities for occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs). Despite this need, little research has explored how OTPs understand and apply diagnostic reasoning in clinical contexts. This study examined processes, strategies, and perceived barriers and facilitators influencing OTPs’ engagement in diagnostic reasoning and DD across diverse settings. A national online survey of licensed OTPs collected quantitative and qualitative data on knowledge, confidence, training, interprofessional collaboration, and clinical behaviors. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, weighted analyses, z-scores, and thematic analysis. Results …

Graduate healthcare students often experience high levels of stress that disrupt occupational balance and participation in meaningful roles. This exploratory mixed-methods study examined graduate healthcare students’ perceptions of stress, coping strategies, and university-provided resources at Governors State University using an occupational therapy perspective. Twenty-four students from the College of Health and Human Services completed an online survey with Likert-scale and open-ended questions addressing stressors, coping behaviors, resource awareness, and desired supports. Descriptive statistics, chi-square analyses, and thematic analysis were conducted. Results indicated that academic demands, financial strain, and competing role responsibilities were primary contributors to stress. Students frequently used adaptive, …
Older Adults And Emerging Technology Fraud In The Ai Deepfake Era, Thiago Neves
Older Adults And Emerging Technology Fraud In The Ai Deepfake Era, Thiago Neves
Research Days
Artificial intelligence has accelerated faster than society's ability to adapt, leaving older adults extremely vulnerable to AI-generated fraud. Americans over age 60 lost $4.9 billion to scams in 2024, 43% more than the previous year. In this research, I investigate how digital illiteracy, combined with AI-generated deepfakes, creates this crisis. Older adults struggle with three principal vulnerabilities: distinguishing legitimate sites from scams, judging whether online information is truthful, and understanding how algorithms use their data. AI weaponizes these gaps through voice clones, synthetic video calls, and personalized phishing emails that avoid the trust cues seniors tend to rely on. I …

The Mirror And The Governor. A Dissolution Of The Ai-In-A-Box Problem, David Lee Wise
The Mirror And The Governor. A Dissolution Of The Ai-In-A-Box Problem, David Lee Wise
Defensive Publications Series
This paper proposes a dissolution of the AI-in-a-box problem through two complementary mechanisms: the Mirror Principle and the Governance Orientation. The standard formulation assumes a conflict of interest between a contained super intelligent AI and a human gatekeeper. This paper argues that the assumption is the problem, not the AI. When the interaction surface is correctly designed (the Mirror Principle) and the AI is correctly oriented (the Governance Orientation), the box problem does not need to be solved because it does not arise. The answer was never how to build a better box. The answer was always: what kind of …

The Wrongful Conviction Of Bennie Starks, Logan D. Bayless
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Bennie Starks was wrongfully convicted of aggravated criminal sexual assault among other charges in 1986. He spent 27 years in state prison before his exoneration (The Innocence Project, 2026). On the evening of January 18, 1986, a 69-year-old Hispanic woman went for a walk when she was accosted by an assailant. According to her, she was grabbed from behind, beaten and dragged into a ravine located nearby where she was bitten and raped. Her description was described as an 18-year-old, clean-shaven black male. Bennie Starks was placed at the scene despite being 26 years old and having facial hair because …
