Effects Of Sudden Removal Of High Social Enrichment Upon Monoamine Levels In Cortical And Subcortical Structures Of The Rat Brain, Rachel Lichtenstein, Spencer Feehan, Hailey Robson

Research Days Posters 2023

The goal of this study was to evaluate a novel stress-induced animal model in both male (n=28) and female (n=28) Sprague-Dawley rats. Stress was induced during adolescence by exposing the rats to standard social enrichment following a period of high* social enrichment (*frequent handling and playdates with 12 same sex non-cagemates). High Performance Liquid Chromatography was used to evaluate monoamine levels in post-mortem tissue from cortical structures (prefrontal cortex, motor cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, orbitofrontal cortex) and from subcortical structures (amygdala, hypothalamus, hippocampus, lateral thalamus, medial thalamus, dorsal striatum, ventral striatum). Overall, results showed that monoamine levels were lower in …

Relationships Between Impostorism, Perceived Parental Support, And Gender In First-Generation Undergraduate Students, Julianna Wroblewski, Isabella Marcel

Research Days Posters 2023

Impostorism is characterized by feelings of self-doubt and phoniness regarding one’s abilities and achievements, despite one’s history of success. Previous research has demonstrated a link between impostorism and perceived parental support (PPS), such that higher degrees of parental care were associated with lower imposter feelings. Our research examined the relationship between impostorism and PPS among first-generation college students (FGCS), a population shown to be more vulnerable to impostorism. Additionally, we investigated whether gender moderates the link between impostorism and PPS. A total of 503 FGCS at Binghamton University were included in the study. The results revealed a significant negative correlation …

Libraries

The purpose of this study was to analyze biomedical research productivity in Africa South of Sahara indexed in Scopus. Using a retrospective bibliometric analysis with Scopus databases, data covering 2010-2022 from 41 South of Sahara countries was retrieved and analysed using H-Index, webometrics and impact factor. The results show that the biomedical research output by Africa South of Sahara was 2,207 documents, almost half (1,087) from South Africa alone followed by Nigeria (282), Kenya (236) and Uganda (193). The least was Somalia, one (01) document. Overall, the University of Cape Town in South Africa had the highest publications (269) as …

A Qualitative Enquiry Of Health Care Workers’ Narratives On Knowledge And Sources Of Information On Principles Of Respectful Maternity Care (Rmc), Adelaide Lusambili, Stefania Wisofschi, Terrance J. Wade, Marleen Temmerman, Jerim Obure Jan 2023

A Qualitative Enquiry Of Health Care Workers’ Narratives On Knowledge And Sources Of Information On Principles Of Respectful Maternity Care (Rmc), Adelaide Lusambili, Stefania Wisofschi, Terrance J. Wade, Marleen Temmerman, Jerim Obure

Institute for Human Development, East Africa

Research from sub-Saharan Africa indicate that many women experience varied forms of disrespectful maternity care, which amount to a violation of their rights and dignity. Notably, there is little research that sheds light on health care workers (HCWs) training and knowledge of principles of respectful maternity care (RMC). Formulating appropriate interventional strategies to promote the respectful provision of services for women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period requires an understanding of the current state of knowledge and sources of information on respectful maternity care among HCWs. This paper reports findings from a qualitative study that examined the knowledge and sources …

Delivering Health Services During Early Days Of Covid-19 Pandemic: Perspectives Of Frontline Healthcare Workers In Kenya’S Urban Informal Settlements, Vibian Angweny, Sabina Odero, Stephen Mulupi, Derrick Ssewanyana, Constance Shumba, Eunice Ndirangu, Amina Abubakar

Institute for Human Development, East Africa

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused widespread disruptions to health, economic and social lives globally. This qualitative study explores frontline healthcare workers’ (HCWs) experiences delivering routine care in Kenya’s informal settlements during the early phases of the pandemic, amidst stringent COVID-19 mitigation measures. Thirteen telephone interviews were conducted with facility and community-based HCWs serving three informal settlements in Nairobi and Mombasa. Data were analyzed using the framework approach. Results indicate there were widespread fears and anxieties surrounding COVID-19 and its management. Secondly, access to facility-based care at the onset of the pandemic was reported to decline, with service availability hampered by …

Neural Correlates Of Memory Formation Of Young Children In A Term And Preterm Born Sample, Christina Lee Jan 2023

Neural Correlates Of Memory Formation Of Young Children In A Term And Preterm Born Sample, Christina Lee

Wayne State University Theses

Episodic memory facilitates the ability to encode and retrieve information. This is especially important when considering special populations, such as children born prematurely, who are at high risk of developing deficits in episodic memory. Utilizing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the current study aimed to examine differences between activations of neural correlates (MTL, PFC) of episodic memory compared to activations in a control region, the primary visual cortex (BA17) in children born full-term and preterm. More specifically, differences during memory encoding and subsequent memory effects (SMEs) were investigated. The MTL, PFC, and BA17 regions showed encoding activation while participants were …

Ignored, Harassed, And Endangered: States Must Provide Gender-Affirming Healthcare To Transgender Youth In Juvenile Detention, Jake Gnolfo Jan 2023

Ignored, Harassed, And Endangered: States Must Provide Gender-Affirming Healthcare To Transgender Youth In Juvenile Detention, Jake Gnolfo

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

In 2019, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Edmo v. Corizon, Inc. held a prison’s denial of gender-affirming care to a transgender adult prisoner constituted cruel and unusual punishment under the Eighth Amendment. However, the reality for incarcerated transgender juveniles is much different. It is incredibly hard, if not impossible, for transgender juveniles to obtain access to gender-affirming care while detained. Furthermore, states have begun banning gender-affirming healthcare for all transgender youth. Preliminary injunctions of these laws have been swift and successful; however, transgender juveniles remain left out of the conversation. While being restrained of their …

Marginalized Community College Students' Perspectives Of Their First Time In Honors And Experiences With Tracking, Trina Sotirakopulos Jan 2023

Marginalized Community College Students' Perspectives Of Their First Time In Honors And Experiences With Tracking, Trina Sotirakopulos

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Many of the variables that determine college admission are beyond a student’s control, including the academic track they were assigned as early as primary school—often referred to as “ability-grouping” or skills-homogeneous classes. Even in higher education, students feel the effects of unequal sorting and sifting from tracking. The purpose of this study was to learn from marginalized community college students who were in low and middle track courses in high school. The study located how socially marginalized students taking honors courses for the first time perceived their past experiences with tracking, current opportunities in community college honors, and ways tracking …

The Urgent Need For Neuroscience Research To Consider Culture When Assessing The Development Of Gait In Autistic Children: A Scoping Review, Milijana Buac, Gabriela Ibarra, Ricardo Torres, Sinana Onal, Allison Gladfelter, Ziteng Wang Jan 2023

The Urgent Need For Neuroscience Research To Consider Culture When Assessing The Development Of Gait In Autistic Children: A Scoping Review, Milijana Buac, Gabriela Ibarra, Ricardo Torres, Sinana Onal, Allison Gladfelter, Ziteng Wang

CISLL Publications

Background: Over the last decade, there has been a steady increase in the number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on a global scale, impacting all racial and cultural groups. This increase in the diagnostic rate has prompted investigation into a myriad of factors that may serve as early signs of ASD. One of these factors includes the biomechanics of gait, or the manner of walking. Although ASD is a spectrum, many autistic children experience differences in gross motor function, including gait. It has been documented that gait is also impacted by racial and cultural background. Given that …

Effects Of Indonesian Cuisine On The Dutch Kitchen And Culture Post World War Ii, Anton Syril Van Schaik Jan 2023

Effects Of Indonesian Cuisine On The Dutch Kitchen And Culture Post World War Ii, Anton Syril Van Schaik

Pitzer Senior Theses

As a colony of the Netherlands, the Dutch East Indies (upon independence named Indonesia) was a prodigious source of economic revenue -- first due to the spice trade and then coffee -- for the Netherlands from around 1610 to 1949. But, despite the long history of Dutch colonization in Southeast Asia, Indonesian cuisine failed to make a large impact on Dutch culture and cuisine until the 1940s. Before World War II, despite the Netherlands primarily deriving its revenue from global trade, both economically, and especially culturally, all areas, except for the economically engaged, Western cities, were extremely insulated. However, due …

La Puerta Park, Graeme F. Logan Jan 2023

La Puerta Park, Graeme F. Logan

Pitzer Senior Theses

The thesis at hand analyzed ecological corridors, biophilic design, and native planting as individual design entities, and eventually combined them through the creation of a comprehensive park proposal called La Puerta Park. The park was located in the urban matrix of Claremont, CA on a 10-acre parcel of land. The land was recently purchased by Trumark Housing, and a housing development plan was put forth. This project creates a superior alternative to the high levels of impervious surfaces, loss of biodiversity, and lack of community that would ensue after the housing plan implementation. The design process was fluid, as each …

“They Hurt Me Pauley:” Applying Queer Performance Theory Within L.B. Hamilton’S Play A Midnight Clear To Understand Gendered Violence And Prejudice Against Feminine Msm, Skyllar M. Schoening Jan 2023

“They Hurt Me Pauley:” Applying Queer Performance Theory Within L.B. Hamilton’S Play A Midnight Clear To Understand Gendered Violence And Prejudice Against Feminine Msm, Skyllar M. Schoening

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

This essay uses the theoretical lens of queer performance theory to analyze L.B. Hamilton’s play, A Midnight Clear, to increase awareness of gendered violence and prejudice against feminine men-seeking-men (MSM). I first contextualize existing literature about sexual assault and the limited research about feminine men regarding sexual violence and assault. Then, I examine the components of queer performance theory, positing a metaphorical equation of combining both queer theory and performance theory to further understand the roots of queer performance theory. In this section, I also suggest the importance of representation and identity within a dramaturgical and theatrical-based lens from both …

The Influence Of Peyton Manning’S Christian Masculinity, Jacob Edwards

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

Have you ever had a role model or favorite athlete? I had a few, Peyton Manning was and still is my favorite. My favorite team has always been the Indianapolis Colts and that is the team Peyton Manning played for. Growing up I collected a variety of trading cards. I have a couple of Peyton Manning’s rookie cards and even one of his jersey cards. I remember getting those and being pretty fired up when I got them. I admired his attitude toward the sport as it always seemed like he was trying to make a positive impact, work hard, …

Bloodred: Violence On Screen, Emma Kuitunen

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

The dishonest mob boss goes down in a spray of bullets and blood; a humanoid machine meets her end amidst flying glass shards; a son smothers his mother in her hospital bed; a former assassin confronts the red in her ledger. Violence in films exists in a variety of dimensions. It can be graphic or subtle, triumphant or tragic. It can be primarily masculine and heterosexual, or it can involve other genders and sexualities. However it is portrayed, violence plays an important role in a film’s narrative and cultural messages. The four films I analyze in this essay—The Godfather (1972), …

Murderess Row: Selling Morals To 1920s America, Rachel Goldsmith

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

Genevieve Forbes-Herrick gave her thoughts on Maurine Watkins’ new play “Chicago” in the October 16th, 1927, edition of the Chicago Tribune. Forbes-Herrick requested that the management reserve a block of seats for a few local women who “tarried on the fourth floor of the building at Dearborn Street and Austin Avenue long enough to get themselves into a play”. In Forbes-Herrick’s opinion, Beulah Annan should have been given an aisle seat for her incredible beauty, inspiring the character named Roxie. The next best seat should have gone to the incredibly stylish Belva Gaertner to witness the characterization of Velma. Moonshine …

A Register Analysis Of Public Prayers, Lindsey Newton, Brett Hashimoto Jan 2023

A Register Analysis Of Public Prayers, Lindsey Newton, Brett Hashimoto

BYU Studies

Prayer, as defined by scholars Corwin and Brown, is “a form of ritual language . . . [that] affords humans the possibility to communicate with non-human others.” As a linguistic register (that is, a variety of language defined by an area of use, such as academic research articles, text messages, sermons, or blog posts), it denotes communication with an unseen being, primarily in a religious context. However, “despite the importance of religion and ritual in anthropology, prayer, a key component of religious practices and institutions, has received very little empirical attention.” This is partially because the complexity of religion as …

“The Gospel Of Intelligence And Culture”: Literature And Literary Instruction In The Twentieth-Century Mia Curriculum, Michael Austin, Rachel Meibos Helps

In his journal for April 29, 1888, Bishop Orson F. Whitney recorded a curious meeting that he had with an Apostle. “Had a long conversation in the morning with Apostle Moses Thatcher,” wrote Whitney. “He gave me a blessing and set me apart to deliver a lecture on Sunday, June 3rd next, at the Mutual Improvement Conference in the Tabernacle. My subject is Home Literature. I consented to deliver it, though very busy and overworked, at the request of the Authorities.” This remarkable assignment— he was called and set apart to give a speech in the way men at the …
