Evaluating The Benefits Of “Science Of Learning To Learn” In Foundational Undergraduate Biology Courses, Kathryn M. Rafferty, Jenifer Utz, Christy Strong, Matthew Bernacki
UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo
Our objective was to foster increased retention of freshman student and subsequent progression into upper division coursework by incorporating learning skill development and motivational activities into the Introductory Biology courses (BIOL190/191). Enhancement of the introductory biology courses at UNLV has the potential to improve the educational experiences of thousands of students, since about 600 to 800 students enroll in the introductory biology courses each semester. We have previously developed a multimedia learning skill intervention called "The Science of Learning to Learn" which covers the importance of self-testing, spacing out and scheduling study sessions, and managing one's goals, habits, and learning …

Facilitating Freirean Pedagogy And Asset-Based Learning In An Asynchronous Environment In A Doctoral Public Health Course, Manoj Sharma, Liliana Davlos, Sharmistha Roy
UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo
The Department of Social and Behavioral Health offers an asynchronous course, Advanced Applications of Social and Behavioral Theories (HED 762), to doctoral students in public health. In this course, commonly used behavior and social change theories are taught. One such theory is the Freirean theory of adult education, which emphasizes dialogue, critical conscientization, praxis, transformation, and critical consciousness. The instructor of this course uses a variety of methods to imbibe this pedagogy that comprise (a) the use of the fourth-generation multi-theory model (MTM) of health behavior change to motivate students, (b) Freirean dialogue in the Canvas discussion forum with students …

Is Less More? An Analysis Of Microblogs Vs. Discussion Forums As Tools For Understanding The Public, Marco Castillo
Is Less More? An Analysis Of Microblogs Vs. Discussion Forums As Tools For Understanding The Public, Marco Castillo
Publications and Research
Social media platforms offer valuable tools for public administrators seeking to assess public sentiment on policy issues, especially in urban areas with diverse stakeholder interests. This study investigates how public administrators can leverage social media by comparing communications on Reddit’s discussion forum platform with X’s microblogging platform. I hypothesize that Reddit fosters more subjective, nuanced discussions, providing richer insights into public sentiment. To test this, sentiment and regression analyses are conducted on communications about urban cycling on both platforms. Results indicate that while Reddit facilitates deeper exploration of public issues, X also effectively assesses public sentiment. The study concludes by …

Implementation Of Kansei Engineering Method In Designing Spreadable Cheese Packaging, Novi Purnama Sari, Mega Analisa, Suci Puji Lestari, Khofifah Nur Amalia
Makara Journal of Technology
Some spreadable cheese packaging uses flexible plastic without additional features and easily damaged boxes. This packaging causes several problems, such as difficulty in re-storage, loss of product information due to damaged box packaging, wasteful use of packaging materials, and making the product less hygienic. The purpose of this study is to develop packaging that focuses on consumer emotions. The packaging was developed using the Kansei Engineering method, supported by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) as a determinant of the design concept, and Quantification Theory Type 1 (QTT1) to identify design elements. This study produced 46 packaging samples and 40 Kansei words. …

How Speaker Gender Shapes Audience Perceptions Of Credibility: Responses To Humor, Reed Wilson
Honors Theses
This study aims to answer the question of whether the speaker’s gender, the participant’s gender, or the interaction between the two has an effect on the audience’s opinions of the message and the credibility of the speaker. Public speaking has been and continues to be a tool used by politicians, both on the campaign trail and as they seek to advance their agendas in the public sphere. Politicians use humor to relate to their audience and enhance their likeability and credibility. Google VEO 3’s generative text-to-video AI capabilities were used to create two videos of political speakers, one male and …
Greeting Death “Sitting Up:” How Children’S Literature Provides Modern Death Education, Reilly Kendrick
Greeting Death “Sitting Up:” How Children’S Literature Provides Modern Death Education, Reilly Kendrick
Honors Theses
Western culture places a lot of importance on legacy and friendship as important lessons to learn from death. However, children do not have as much experience with death due to changing cultural customs, and our society lacks a formal death education system that can promote these values and teach children how to respond to death in their lives. Literature, though, can fill this gap in children’s knowledge by teaching the basic physical components of death and philosophical understandings of death. These ideas are learned through vicarious reading, in which children experience the character’s emotions and reactions as they read. The …
Platforms Of Exemption (For New Relations) Within Suburbia And Other Consolidating Hegemonies, Ayden Pritchard
Platforms Of Exemption (For New Relations) Within Suburbia And Other Consolidating Hegemonies, Ayden Pritchard
Honors Theses
Theory is a mode of action that opens up revisionary spaces in the world. By voicing complexity and ambivalence in a situation, disembodied patterns are put in contact with compliant, unclaimed material, and they gain a foothold within the established structures of the present. This paper seeks to sketch the lines of influence that govern association and perception in suburbia, and to speculate the kinds of spaces where new relations between people who are normally segregated can occur. The information presented here hopes to join the reservoir of patterns that structure your everyday theoretical (revisionary) activity, to make changes possible …
Sacred Steps: Walking, Religion, And The Path To Peace, Francesca Benna
Sacred Steps: Walking, Religion, And The Path To Peace, Francesca Benna
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Walking is one of the simplest and most primordial human acts, yet it carries profound meanings that transcend cultures, religious traditions, and paths of individual and collective transformation. Walking is not merely a means of movement but a practice that fosters reconnection with oneself, the environment, and the community. Bruce Chatwin, in The Songlines (1987), highlights how nomadism is an inherent human condition, suggesting that movement is essential not only for physical survival but also for mental and spiritual well-being. In an era marked by environmental crises, conflicts, and increasing technological alienation, rediscovering the value of walking responds to a …

Building A Culture Of Psychological Safety In The Nicu Through Leadership Rounds, Erica Huckaby, Julie Veselinovic, Tomica Franklin
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
In 2024, the GLINT survey conducted in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) showed a psychological safety score of 61 out of 100, with nurses reporting avoidance of speaking up because they feared negative reactions from physicians and leadership. These results identified a critical need for leadership interventions.
NICU nursing leaders (nurse managers and director of nursing) implemented evidence-based leadership rounds which have been shown to enhance communication and psychological safety in critical care environments (Diabes et al., 2021). Rounds were conducted on all shifts and included five main components: workflow assessment, concern identification, immediate need evaluation, staff recognition for …

Nurse Preceptors' Perceptions Of Barriers And Facilitators To Effective Precepting, Kelly Anne Jenkins-Arraf
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Introduction: Nursing school is a rigorous and demanding program, often presenting more challenges than other baccalaureate degree programs. Clinical rotations can be particularly challenging as students spend over 50% of their time learning under the guidance of clinical nurse preceptors. The effectiveness of preceptors is crucial to the students' success (Cipher et al., 2021).
Purpose Statement: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to examine how clinical nurse preceptors perceive their effectiveness while working baccalaureate nursing students.
Methodology: Convenience sampling was employed, and the inclusion criteria specified that participants must be registered nurses with at least one preceptorship experience …

Enhancing Assessment Tools For Foster Youth: A Phenomenological Approach To Preparing For Independent Living, Karen M. Armstead
Enhancing Assessment Tools For Foster Youth: A Phenomenological Approach To Preparing For Independent Living, Karen M. Armstead
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
Abstract
Foster youth transitioning to independent living often face challenges that extend beyond technical life skills. This qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of 10 former foster youth (ages 18–21) regarding readiness for independent living and the adequacy of preparation they received. Semi-structured interviews were guided by an 18-question instrument reflecting real-world transition domains commonly addressed by nonprofit independent living programs. Thematic analysis yielded three primary themes: (1) lack of preparation, (2) emotional strain and abandonment, and (3) life skills training. Findings indicate that readiness is multidimensional and shaped by practical preparation, emotional readiness, and relational support. For nonprofit …
Framing Digital Donation: Innovation And Audience Engagement In Short Video Fundraising On Douyin, Qiuyi Chen
Framing Digital Donation: Innovation And Audience Engagement In Short Video Fundraising On Douyin, Qiuyi Chen
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
Short video platforms are increasingly adopted by nonprofit organizations as tools for charitable communication and fundraising. However, limited research has examined how donation appeals are structured and interpreted within these environments. Existing studies focus on emotional appeal, influencer involvement, and algorithmic visibility, yet donation is often treated as a behavioral outcome rather than as a communicative process.
This study conceptualizes charitable donation as a social situation that must be framed and recognized by audiences in short video contexts. Drawing on Goffman’s frame analysis and employing the Visual–Verbal Video Analysis (VVVA) method, the study analyzes 32 publicly available videos from a …
Staff Education To Improve Culturally Responsive Mental Health Care For African Immigrants, Martha Eseh
Staff Education To Improve Culturally Responsive Mental Health Care For African Immigrants, Martha Eseh
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mental health disparities among African immigrant populations are often influenced by cultural stigma, limited mental health literacy, and providers’ insufficient understanding of culturally specific beliefs and help-seeking behaviors. In outpatient psychiatric settings, these gaps can negatively affect engagement, diagnosis, and treatment outcomes. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate whether a structured staff education program could improve provider knowledge of culturally responsive care for African immigrant patients. Guided by the Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice model, a pretest–posttest design was implemented with 13 interprofessional staff members, including psychiatric providers, therapists, and support staff, in an outpatient mental health …
Staff Education On The Implementation Of Walking Interventions, Cynthia Ononobi
Staff Education On The Implementation Of Walking Interventions, Cynthia Ononobi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The doctoral project was a staff education project aimed at improving the knowledge of psychiatric nurses on the use of structured walking interventions to manage depression. The practice problem was related to the lack of consistency in the application of walking as a treatment for depression. This gap was significant to address because psychiatric nurses are in the center of behavioral activation, and insufficient knowledge may deny patients the right to potentially valuable, affordable, and nonpharmacological treatment. The practice-based question was: Among psychiatric nursing staff does education on structured walking intervention, compared to standard care, improve staff knowledge and skills …

A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Finds That Psychological Well-Being Predicts All-Cause Mortality Independently Of Psychological Ill-Being., Max Genecov, David Yeager
Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Does psychological well-being (e.g. life satisfaction, happiness, meaning in life) predict the length of a person’s life, or are measures of well-being simply assessing the absence of ill-being (depression, loneliness, sadness) and are therefore redundant with ill-being measures? Individual studies have examined this question by measuring and controlling for both well-being and ill-being, but inconsistent findings have been reported. METHODS: A systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis was conducted on the literature of prospective longitudinal studies linking all-cause mortality to well-being. Studies that controlled for ill-being were compared to studies that did not control for ill-being to identify the unique …
Administrative Burdens In Post-Filing Eviction Prevention Programs: Focusing On Oregon's Safe Harbor Policy, Minji Cho
Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative Publications and Presentations
This study examines the administrative burdens faced by tenants in post-filing eviction prevention programs, focusing on Oregon’s Safe Harbor Policy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Safe Harbor, paired with the Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) Program, aimed to prevent tenants from being evicted while waiting for rental assistance applications to be processed and for the monies to be disbursed, by inserting a long pause in the otherwise short eviction process. Despite its novelty, tenants in post-filing eviction stages faced challenges with tight timelines and navigating both eviction proceedings and ERA applications. This study demonstrates the administrative burden tenants experienced when securing Safe …

Reimaging Wayang In The Digital Age; "The Sintren" Project And Cultural Commoning, Maya Purnama Sari, Nuning Yanti Damayanti, Irfansyah Irfansyah, Hafiz Aziz Ahmad
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Wayang, as a traditional performing art in Indonesia, continues to develop through various forms of experimentation. One example is the Wayang Lostang YouTube channel, developed by Samuel Indratma through the animation project Sintren, save the planet in collaboration with students from SMK Komputama Majenang. Distribution through YouTube indicates that the transformation of wayang is not merely visual but is also a collective cultural practice grounded in social relations, reflecting cultural commoning in the Indonesian context. This study aims to understand how these practices operate through production, social relations, and the formation of cultural meaning in digital circulation. The research employs …

Interconnectedness And Solidarity Networking; A Case Of New Media Commoning In Indonesian Regional Youtube Series, Ratna Erika M. Suwarno
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The 2010s saw a surge in the number of Indonesian regional filmmakers using YouTube to showcase their creative practices and engage in cultural and media commoning activities. This article explores the production practices and community networking of Hajar Pamuji and his eponymous YouTube channel (HP channel). In exploring their media commoning practices, I examine the HP channel’s YouTube series Film Pendek Hajar Pamuji (FPHP), particularly its production strategies as creative negotiations and engagement schemes. Tracing the connections and networking of their YouTube channel, I further examine HP’s positioning within its solidarity networks, alongside its viewership, local collaborators and …
Staging The Commons Through The “Padha Nonton” Song; Youtube, Community Engagement, And Gandrung Cultural Practice, Intan Mustika Sari
Staging The Commons Through The “Padha Nonton” Song; Youtube, Community Engagement, And Gandrung Cultural Practice, Intan Mustika Sari
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This study examines how the Gandrung accompaniment song “Padha nonton” participates in processes of digital cultural sharing when circulated on YouTube. It employs a qualitative interpretive method within a netno‑pragmatic framework to analyse audience engagement as a culturally informed social practice. The findings show that the song’s linguistic features convey cultural scripts of invitation, togetherness, and communal spectatorship, reflecting the role of the Gandrung tradition in shaping shared social relationships and cultural values. Furthermore, the study identifies three interrelated processes: re-medialization, re-experiencing, and re-conception through which the performance extends beyond its original ritual context and becomes a shared …

"Commoning" The Artist-Led Archive; Sharing Heri Dono’S Private Archive With A Public Audience, Eliza O’Donnell, Agni Saraswati
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Built from the ground-up and with no formal government support, artist-led archives in Indonesia engage in commoning practices by creating community-centred platforms for knowledge sharing, in both physical and digital spaces. This article examines “acts of commoning” through the lens of artist Heri Dono at Studio Kalahan in Yogyakarta, an artist-led archive that challenges institutional approaches by treating Dono’s practice-based knowledge as shared creative resources, rather than private intellectual property. Three “acts of commoning” are explored through an iterative process of 1) building, 2) reproduction and digitization, and 3) sharing through exhibition and Instagram. It is argued that commoning of …

Beyond Creative Tourism Cities; Youth Media Commoning In Urban Indonesia, Amalia N. Andini, Mely Noviryani, Andhika Krisnaloka, Anton Novenanto
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
How do young people make sense of themselves through the stories they tell about their lives in cities? In this article, we examine youth media-making in Malang and Batu, Indonesia, as a meaningful practice of commoning that engages with the construction of youth and the city under the neoliberal logic of urban development in Southeast Asia. Our Participatory Action Research (PAR) with young people in local neighbourhoods has produced a series of documentary films and an anthology, co-authored to narrate their lived urban experiences and interactions with tourism. By telling their own stories from kampung wisata (tourism neighbourhoods), they …

Genetic Variation In Slc6a4 And Cytochrome P450 Enzymes: Implications For Personalized Antidepressant Treatment In Major Depressive Disorder, Claudia Buda
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders worldwide, with a significant impact on quality of life and global health. Despite the widespread use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) as first-line treatment, individual responses vary significantly due to genetic differences. Variations in the serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4) and the cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzyme family have been identified as key factors influencing the efficacy, metabolism, and tolerability of SSRIs. This thesis examines the impact of polymorphisms in SLC6A4 and CYP450 on SSRI pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, explores their potential for guiding personalized antidepressant therapy, and discusses the ethical and practical …

Peer Cultural Socialization As A Moderator Of Perceived Discrimination And Ethnic-Racial Identity Exploration Among Korean Adoptees, Josie Braun, Majel Baker, Jae-In Kim, Richard Lee, Elisheva Perelman
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
As peers become increasingly salient sources of affirmation and cultural learning across adolescence and emerging adulthood, peer cultural socialization may play a distinct and critical role in moderating Korean adoptees' exploration of their ethnic-racial identity. This study hypothesized that 1) ethnic-racial discrimination experienced in the past year in adulthood (T3) will be unrelated to exploration of Korean ethnic-racial identity in adulthood (T3). However, peer racial socialization in adulthood (T3) will moderate the relationship between ethnic-racial discrimination experienced in adulthood (T3) and exploration of Korean ethnic-racial identity in adulthood (T3), and 2) ethnic-racial discrimination experienced in the past year in adulthood …
