In orthognathic surgical planning for patients with jaw deformities, it is crucial to accurately simulate the changes in facial appearance that follow the bony movement. Compared with the traditional biomechanics-based methods like the finite-element method (FEM), which are both labor-intensive and computationally inefficient, deep learning-based methods offer an efficient and robust modeling alternative. However, current methods do not account for the physical relationship between facial soft tissue and bony structure, causing them to fall short in accuracy compared to FEM. In this work, we propose an Attentive Correspondence assisted Movement Transformation network (ACMT-Net) to predict facial changes by correlating facial …

Modeling And Numerical Analysis Of The Cholesteric Landau-De Gennes Model, Andrew L. Hicks Apr 2024

Modeling And Numerical Analysis Of The Cholesteric Landau-De Gennes Model, Andrew L. Hicks

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis gives an analysis of modeling and numerical issues in the Landau-de Gennes (LdG) model of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) with cholesteric effects. We derive various time-step restrictions for a (weighted) $L^2$ gradient flow scheme to be energy decreasing. Furthermore, we prove a mesh size restriction, for finite element discretizations, that is critical to avoid spurious numerical artifacts in discrete minimizers that is not well-known in the LC literature, particularly when simulating cholesteric LCs that exhibit ``twist''. Furthermore, we perform a computational exploration of the model and present several numerical simulations in 3-D, on both slab geometries and spherical …

Analysis And Improvement Of Efficient Charge Recovery Logic Adiabatic Circuits, William Morell Apr 2024

Analysis And Improvement Of Efficient Charge Recovery Logic Adiabatic Circuits, William Morell

Response To Repressions: Lithuanian Clergy In Dramatic Post-War Turmoil, Regina Laukaityte

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

For a long time after the war, Lithuanians were convinced that the United States of America and England would demand that Stalin withdraw his troops from the occupied European countries. Predictions of imminent political change, based on all sorts of reasoning rather than evidence, continued to circulate among the people. The hopes of liberation were directly linked with the phenomenon of hiding, a self-defense against assumed or imminent Stalinist repression. The aim of this article is to highlight the causes and prevalence of the phenomenon of hiding in Lithuania in the face of Soviet repressions, and the role of the …

Religious Security: Its Essence And Main Factors (Ukrainian Context), Olena Predko, Denys Predko

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Religious security is the protection of the religious space from internal and external threats, which is a particularly important issue in Ukraine today. In the premodern era, the idea of security was formed, which ensured, on the one hand, the development of a certain system of practices as auxiliary factors of neutralizing fear, insecurity, etc., and on the other hand, contributed to strengthening the protective function of various gods and forces as a means of preserving human integrity. In contrast, in the Christian worldview, chain interdependence is built between the concepts of “prayer,” “religious faith,” and “religious freedom,” the totality …

Observation Of Seven Astrophysical Tau Neutrino Candidates With Icecube, Karen Andeen

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

We report on a measurement of astrophysical tau neutrinos with 9.7 yr of IceCube data. Using convolutional neural networks trained on images derived from simulated events, seven candidate 𝜈𝜏 events were found with visible energies ranging from roughly 20 TeV to 1 PeV and a median expected parent 𝜈𝜏 energy of about 200 TeV. Considering backgrounds from astrophysical and atmospheric neutrinos, and muons from 𝜋±/𝐾± decays in atmospheric air showers, we obtain a total estimated background of about 0.5 events, dominated by non-𝜈𝜏 astrophysical neutrinos. Thus, we rule out the absence of astrophysical 𝜈 …

Culturally Grounded Well-Being Assessment For Arab Americans, Rawan H. Atari-Khan, Lawrence H. Gerstein

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Recognizing the influence culture plays in shaping our understanding of various phenomena, scholars have posed questions about how well-being might be differentially defined across diverse racial/ethnic groups. In the field of psychology, frequently used instruments of well-being are grounded in individualistic cultural frameworks that assume factors such as greater autonomy/independence are associated with improved well-being. For minoritized groups in the United States, such as Arab Americans, who ascribe to collectivist values, these instruments may not be culturally relevant. The purpose of the present study was to use an etic–emic approach to identify what well-being means for Arab Americans. In doing …
