Workplace Wellness Programs: Do Programs Impact Employer Healthcare Costs?, Ryan Martin

SPNHA Review

With the overwhelming cost of healthcare in the United States and the preponderance of employer sponsored health care, it is no surprise that workplace wellness plans (WWPs), promising to improve employees’ health and reduce healthcare costs, are on the rise. The effectiveness of WWPs in delivering cost savings has been debated over the past several decades as researchers attempted to replicate the savings promised by early case studies and minimize the biases of those studies. The purpose of this literature review article is to summarize the historical debate concerning whether WWPs save employers’ healthcare expenditures and weigh the evidence to …

Sportisation And Values Of Competition : The Case Of Yo-Yoing, Ho Wang, Danny Kwong Jan 2022

Sportisation And Values Of Competition : The Case Of Yo-Yoing, Ho Wang, Danny Kwong

Bachelor of Social Sciences – Senior Theses

Yo-yoing was a popular pastime in the 90s. It has now developed as a sport with standard rules. This research locates competitive yo-yoing within the sociology of sports, specifically, it builds on the lifestyle sports literature. I understand yo-yoing as a lifestyle sport, serious leisure, and subculture. I argue that competition is a site of meaning-making in competitive yo-yoing and delineate the community’s response to sportisation through interviews with 15 yo-yo players in Hong Kong and an examination of a Netflix documentary on yo-yo. The findings suggest 2 implications: a re-visit to the anti-competition discourse among lifestyle sports, and, a …

Executive Job Motivation: A Non-Profit Perspective, Jacques Kalume Mambo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractNonprofit organization (NPO) executives, who serve others while accepting substantial salary and benefit packages, may be motivated by extrinsic and intrinsic elements of their job satisfaction. Yet little is known about the extent to which executives are motivated by altruism alone or by financial compensation and other extrinsic rewards. The purpose of this quantitative study was to test the extent to which intrinsic and extrinsic motivation was correlated with the job satisfaction of NPO executives. The theoretical framework was Ryan and Deci’s self-determination theory, which suggest NPO executives may be solely satisfied through intrinsic motivation. A stratified random sample of …

Factors That Predict Military-Connected Student Academic Success At A Community College, Susan Elizabeth Neimic

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem addressed through this study is the low graduation rate of military-connected students who received benefits from military funding programs (FMCSs) at a community college in the northeastern United States (CCNE). Increasing the graduation rate will prepare more FMCSs for gainful employment and their transition into civilian life. The purpose of this quantitative study was to measure the effects of the nontraditional predictors, age, gender, and ethnicity on completing a 2-year associate degree within 6 years for FMCSs. The research questions determined whether nontraditional predictors for success were the same for FMCSs. Knowles’s theory of andragogy provided the framework …

The Ties That Bind: The Relationship Between Law Firm Growth And Law Firm Survival, Alan J. Kluegel

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

For the better part of the twentieth century, law firms hired, trained, and grew through a stable and predictable pattern: hire new law school graduates, monitor and evaluate their work, and pick promising attorneys from among their ranks and elevate them to partner. Rinse, lather, repeat. A combination of professional norms and organizational inertia made this approach the dominant method of growth among large corporate law firms until changes in legal market broke down these customary practices, ushering in a new era of lawyer mobility. Now, it has become commonplace for lawyers to leave for greener pastures as more law …

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

Courtrooms operate as unique microcosms—inhabited by courtroom personnel, legal actors, defendants, witnesses, family members, and community residents who necessarily interact with each other to conduct the day-to-day functions of justice. This Article argues that these interactions create a nuanced and salient courtroom culture that separates courtroom insiders from courtroom outsiders. The authors use the Cook County courts, specifically the George N. Leighton Courthouse at 2650 S California Avenue in Chicago, Illinois, to investigate courtroom culture and construct a thematic portrait of one of the largest criminal court systems in the United States. Using this newly constructed data source of rich …

Unhrc Resolution 26/9: Is A New International “Red Card” Enough To Keep Fifa And Others Accountable?, Griffin A. Clark

Chicago Journal of International Law

The lead-up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar has generated significant controversy due to the host country’s exploitative labor system and sub-standard human rights record. While FIFA has not remained completely insulated from criticism for its involvement, the sport’s principal governing body has avoided all serious threats of liability for its connection to human rights violations associated with the 2022 World Cup. This immunity largely stems from limitations on domestic courts in adjudicating domestic corporations’ foreign business activities. Yet, the ongoing development of a new treaty under the U.N. offers a different approach to liability for transnational business …
