I have been fortunate enough to work with at-risk children within the youth services and education fields for over 20 years now and through this experience I have learned much about the successes and difficulties that these young people face as they navigate life and work their way toward adulthood. An at-risk youth is a child who, because of various life circumstances, is less likely to transition successfully into adulthood. This success could include in the academic realm, job readiness as well as the ability to become financially independent as an adult. In working directly with these students and their …

A Tax Morale Approach To Compliance: Recommendations For The Irs, Marjorie E. Kornhauser May 2023

A Tax Morale Approach To Compliance: Recommendations For The Irs, Marjorie E. Kornhauser

Florida Tax Review

Why do people follow the law? The answer, under the traditional theory of compliance, is fear of detection and punishment. The deterrence model, however, accounts for only a minor portion of actual compliance levels. It has such poor explanatory power because it assumes that the decision to comply is based solely on a rational cost-benefit analysis in which people weigh the benefits of non-compliance against the costs of detection and penalties. Recent literature reveals, however, that the decision to comply is not purely rational. Rather, personal values, social norms, and non-rational cognitive processes also strongly affect the decision.

What holds …

The Benefits Of Dance/Movement Therapy For Adult Survivors Of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Aubrey Workman

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This literature review focuses on how dance/movement therapy can be beneficial for adult survivors of adverse childhood experiences. The long-term effects of adverse childhood experiences have recently gained attention after a study in 1998 had profound results. Adverse childhood experiences have long-lasting results that continue into adulthood and the more adverse childhood experiences an individual has the more risk they are at for developing psychological and medical diagnoses later in life. Trauma impairs the brain’s functioning and structure, and it takes multiple positive experiences to rewire the brain. Unhealed adverse childhood experiences can lead to impaired relationships with offspring and …

Interest Convergence And Neoliberalism: Effects On Entry-Level Staff Of Color Who Perform Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion In Higher Education, Jesse N. Avila

Master's Theses

Higher education was not originally built to benefit people of color. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are many ways in which universities seek to change higher education. Improving Timely Sepsis Care Through Staff Education Within The Emergency Department, Shirley Chen May 2023

Improving Timely Sepsis Care Through Staff Education Within The Emergency Department, Shirley Chen

Master's Projects and Capstones

Problem: This project was implemented to decrease patient fallout rates through timely compliance with sepsis management according to the SEP-1 bundle. The SEP-1 bundle is already implemented in the emergency department. However, a microsystem assessment indicated barriers are preventing the achievement of the SEP-1 bundle milestones.

Context: This 16-bed emergency department (ED) at an urban Bay Area hospital provides 24-hour emergency services to individuals who suffer from medical injuries, accidents, and other serious health conditions. A random audit of the electronic health system (EHS) revealed that this emergency department consistently fails to meet the sepsis management time goals by 90%. …

Educating Labor And Delivery Nurses On Evidence-Based Birthing Positions To Promote Fetal Descent During First And Second Stage Labor, Sophia Nguyen

Master's Projects and Capstones

The goal of this project was to increase confidence of labor and delivery nurses in utilizing evidence-supported birth positions during the first and second stages of labor in order to aid in fetal descent and labor progression. Current statistics demonstrate climbing trends in cesarean deliveries, which have been associated with increased maternal morbidity and mortality. One nurse intervention that can reduce failure to progress, a main contributor to cesarean sections, is the use of various evidence-supported maternal birth positions such as ambulation, assisted squat, sitting, backwards sitting, lunging, throne, side-lying with peanut ball, hands-and-knees, and throne position. This evidence-based practice …

Increasing Compliance Through Nurse Education On The Bundle, Zachary Harrison-Evans May 2023

Increasing Compliance Through Nurse Education On The Bundle, Zachary Harrison-Evans

Master's Projects and Capstones

In an effort to decrease complications and events connected to sepsis in the ED, there is room for improvement with relation to sepsis care and compliance rates. Timely sepsis management and gains in compliance/adherence rates are hindered by SEP-1 fallouts and requirements related to knowledge gaps concerning sepsis bundle procedures, nurses' attitudes about implementing the protocols, and disparities in nurse/physician order sets. It has been determined that the use of standardized protocols and order sets are not being utilized. This is a process gap and a critical area for improvement. Inadequate fluid and lactate documentation, a lack of education, and …

Experiences Of People With Serious Mental Illness Seeking Services At Community Mental Health Centers During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Emily Leickly

Dissertations and Theses

Community mental health centers (CMHCs) have been underfunded and overburdened since Reagan-era disinvestment and the United States' move toward neoliberalism. Rates of mental illness have been rising consistently, particularly in Oregon, as CMHCs face continuing financial pressures and staff retention issues. This was before the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, we are still trying to understand the ongoing pandemic's impact on people with serious mental illnesses (SMI). Most of the studies in this area thus far are quantitative, and first-hand accounts of the pandemic from people with SMI are largely absent. Additionally, research in this area fails to draw on critical alternative …
