Mechanisms And Consequences Of Cross-Generational Acclimatization In Reef-Building Corals, Kevin Harrison Wong Jan 2022

Mechanisms And Consequences Of Cross-Generational Acclimatization In Reef-Building Corals, Kevin Harrison Wong

Open Access Dissertations

Coral reefs are valued over trillions of dollars and are becoming increasingly degraded due to global climate change. Ocean warming disrupts the symbiotic relationship between corals and their algal symbiont, Symbiodinaceae, leading to severe energetic reduction and increased mortality. Recent studies have identified the potential for beneficial within-generational and cross-generational acclimatization to mitigate the impacts of future environmental change, however the mechanisms and outcomes remain understudied in tropical corals. Here, I present three manuscripts testing different mechanisms of within- and cross-generational acclimatization in corals to understand the long-term consequences of ocean warming. First, we tested the hypothesis that the survival …

Development Of An Extraction Method Of Mucuna Pruriens Seeds For A Chemically And Physically Stable Extract, Chayarit Vilairat Jan 2022

Development Of An Extraction Method Of Mucuna Pruriens Seeds For A Chemically And Physically Stable Extract, Chayarit Vilairat

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Levodopa (L-DOPA) is a drug for the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). Currently, it derives from chemical synthesis and plants, especially Mucuna Pruriens (MP) seeds. The results of clinical studies found using the L-DOPA-containing MP for the treatment of PD could reduce side effects more than the synthetic one but patients must take MP powder in high amounts per a single dose which may cause inconvenience. Therefore, using the extract can help in the reduction of the dose. Unfortunately, the water extract from the MP seeds can be easily degraded physically and chemically; especially the physical appearance e.g., darkening color, …

Production And Biological Activities Of Oligo Pectin From Early Immature Fruit Of Durio Zibethinus L., Aunchiya Pitaksa

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Early immature durian (EID) fruits, 30-45 days after anthesis with 6-12 cm in length, are considered agricultural waste from cultivation. It is known that durian rinds of mature fruits contain pectin, but there have been no reports on the pectin content of early immature durian (EID) fruits. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the pectin content in EID fruits. We extracted pectin from EID fruits using distilled water at different temperatures (25°C, 50°C, and 75°C) for 1 h to investigate pectin content. Instrumental analyses, including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FT-IR), confirmed the presence …

Anti-Neuroinflammatory Effects Of Auricularia Polytricha Extracts On Bisphenol A (Bpa)-Induced Microglial Cell Activation And Reduction Of Hippocampal Cell Damage, Chanin Sillapachaiyaporn

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Bisphenol A (BPA) is widely used in the production of polycarbonate plastics, it has been reported that BPA can activate neuroinflammation. Neuroinflammation is a brain pathology that involves the high levels of pro-inflammatory mediators, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). An excessive TNF-α expression could result in neuronal cell death and subsequently lead to neurodegeneration. Auricularia polytricha (AP) is an edible mushroom with several medicinal properties. Herein, the anti-neuroinflammatory effects of AP extracts against BPA-induced BV2 microglial inflammation were investigated. Hexane (APH) and ethanol (APE) extracts of AP inhibited BPA-induced neuroinflammation in BV2 cells by reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. …

Take It With A Grain (Or More) Of Salt: Why Industry-Backed Dietary Guidelines Fail Americans And How To Fix Them, Caroline Farrington Jan 2022

Take It With A Grain (Or More) Of Salt: Why Industry-Backed Dietary Guidelines Fail Americans And How To Fix Them, Caroline Farrington

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The U.S. Dietary Guidelines lack oversight and accountability. The result: Guidelines that reflect food industry interests instead of modern science. This deleterious guidance goes on to govern federally-subsidized food assistance programs and to influence dietary choices throughout the private sector and private life. Ultimately, the Guidelines significantly contribute to the endemic chronic disease they seek to address.

The Guidelines Advisory Committee is notoriously rife with conflicts of interest, and thus most Guidelines scholarship has focused on reforming the Committee. But the 2015 and 2020 Guidelines show that these reforms are insufficient and agency-level change is necessary. In 2015, the Committee …

Project H.O.M.E: A Novel Nature-Based Therapy Approach For The Treatment Of Veterans With Trauma, Jenny L. Laverdure

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Around the world, trauma disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are on the rise. Evidence-based treatment protocols, such as cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and prolonged exposure (PE) are effective in treatment. However, high dropout rates, stigma, and other barriers to treatment are driving the exploration of alternative treatment options. Nature-based interventions, such as wilderness or adventure therapy, forest bathing, and horticulture therapy, have been utilized for a variety of medical and psychological disorders for several years. There are limited formal programs, but research generally supports positive outcomes with specified interventions. However, there are several challenges to studying the effectiveness …

The Regulation Of Stress Steroid Release In Freshwater Turtles, Yoke Tassent Jan 2022

The Regulation Of Stress Steroid Release In Freshwater Turtles, Yoke Tassent

Honors Program Theses

The goal of this study is to characterize the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis regulators of the stress response in a turtle species, the Red-Eared slider, Trachemys scripta elegans and to determine if NPY acts as a secretagogue for adrenal steroids in reptilian species, as it does in mammals. Here, I caught turtles using baited hoop traps. Then, I used pharmacological injections of ACTH (intermediate in HPA axis), dexamethasone (DEX, a synthetic steroid that blocks ACTH release and induces HPA negative feedback), NPY (starvation hormone), and NPY receptor agonists. Each turtle received a single injection upon capture, and I recorded whether adrenal …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Novel Tyrosinase Inhibitors, Virginia Bailey Jan 2022

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Novel Tyrosinase Inhibitors, Virginia Bailey

Honors Program Theses

Melanin is responsible for the protection against ultraviolet light and the pigmentation of mammalian skin, hair, and eyes.1–3 This indolic polymer is located in the epidermis of mammals and is produced through melanogenesis in specialized cells called melanocytes. Over production of melanin in humans can produce unwanted aesthetic products such as dark spots, freckles, solar lentigo (age spots), melasma, and even cancer.2,4,5 The overproduction of melanin during post-harvest handling causes enzymatic browning of produce resulting in a loss of nutritional value, a decrease in shelf life, and a decline flavor.2,6–8 Tyrosinase is an oxidoreductase, type-3, copper-containing glycoprotein located in the …

Decarceration Means Funding The Incarcerated, David Campbell Jan 2022

Decarceration Means Funding The Incarcerated, David Campbell

City University of New York Law Review

While there are varied assertions as to what “defunding the police” and “reinvesting in communities” mean, I propose that one step towards this goal would be to redistribute the funds from Corrections Offices and bureaucratic management to incarcerated workers to ensure they are paid a suitable wage. If an increase in inmate pay appears outrageous to some, it is only because it entails beginning to treat inmates as full-fledged human beings and, in doing so, upsets the power dynamic between the incarcerated and their keepers.

Intracellular Fate Of Bovine Milk Exosomes In Murine Bone Marrow-Derived Macrophages, Afsana Khanam, Janos Zempleni

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Milk exosomes (MEs) and their microRNA cargos constitute novel bioactive food compounds, and bovine MEs (BMEs) are being considered for use in drug delivery. The internalization of MEs by macrophages and degradation in lysosomes (in all cells) limit biological activities. Here, we determined whether BMEs internalized by murine bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) retrofuse with the intralumenal membrane in the multivesicular body (MVB) for subsequent release into the extracellular space or whether BMEs are destined for degradation in lysosomes.

Conclusions: The retrofusion of BME-derived intralumenal MVBs and secretion of BME into the extracellular space is quantitatively minor in BMDMs. The majority …

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are anthropogenic chemicals that have been produced for decades as either processing aids or individual ingredients in many industrial and commercial products, including aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs), non-stick cookware, and fast-food packaging. PFOA and PFOS have been reported in >95% of blood samples collected during multiple U.S. national surveys at concentrations that are a risk to human health. Thermal treatment is routinely used to reactivate the spent granular activated carbon (GAC) from water purification facilities. The aims of this study were: (1) to improve our understanding of the thermal stability of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances; …

Juvenile Temperature Regulation In Apis Mellifera (Honey Bee) And The Impacts Of Brood Temperature Requirements On The Colony, Scott Debnam Jan 2022

Juvenile Temperature Regulation In Apis Mellifera (Honey Bee) And The Impacts Of Brood Temperature Requirements On The Colony, Scott Debnam

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Little is known about the energetic costs to insects of raising young. Honey bees collectively raise young, or brood, through a series of complex behaviors that appear to accelerate and synchronize the timing of brood maturation. These include maintaining the brood nest at warmer and consistent temperatures and the exceptional activity of "heater bees." The temperature at which juvenile insects are raised can profoundly affect their development. Apis mellifera (Honey bees) cope with temperature-dependent development via social behavior that maintains the relatively high and constant temperatures within the nest where the brood are raised. Yet juvenile honey bee development is …
