Incidence Of Cancer, Depression, And Economic Burden Of Prescription Nsaids Among Older Adults With Osteoarthritis: Statistical And Machine Learning Approaches, Nazneen Fatima Mohammed Umer Shaikh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Understanding the role of chronic inflammation among older adults is critical because of its implications on chronic inflammatory conditions as well as its interaction with anti-inflammatory medications. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a heterogeneous multi-faceted joint disease with multi-tissue involvement of varying severity, and increasing evidence demonstrates a key role of chronic inflammation in its pathogenesis. Approximately 30 million adults in the United States have OA, and it is reported that a large proportion (43%) of them are older than 65 years. OA is typically treated using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for minimizing pain and reducing inflammation. NSAIDs have consistently shown clinically …

Development of a Transition Program for Young Adults with Type 1 Diabetes Progressing from Pediatric to Adult Care – A Feasibility Study
Elizabeth A. Minchau
Background: Emerging adulthood requires a delicate balance of the competing social, educational, occupational, and financial demands typical of this developmental stage. This time period presents special challenges for adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D), who must also prioritize consistent medical follow-up and ongoing intensive self-care. Emerging adults with T1D struggle with glycemic control that is further exacerbated by an often-times disorganized transfer of care between pediatric and adult endocrinology practices. Substantial gaps in care …
Genetic Underpinnings Of Novel Trait Development In A Euwallacea-Fusarium Mutualism, Elaina J. Spahr
Genetic Underpinnings Of Novel Trait Development In A Euwallacea-Fusarium Mutualism, Elaina J. Spahr
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Evolutionary Developmental Biology seeks to answer fundamental questions about the mechanisms underlying the evolution and innovation towards increasing structural complexity within the body plan. The ambrosia symbiosis, a polyphyletic group of xylem-feeding beetles, provides a wealth of diversity in novel pouch-like structures called mycangia. This diversity could serve as a rich model for understanding how mutualisms may prompt structural innovation and diversification in a host organism. The ambrosia symbiosis has become a fast-growing research subject in entomology and forest pathology but has yet to experience the same attention under the lens of evolutionary developmental genetics.
Development of mycangia was examined …
Screen Media Use Among Children And Adolescents – Applications Of Supervised And Unsupervised Machine Learning And Sentiment Analysis, Yifan Zhang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Screen media has become increasingly pervasive in our everyday lives and has profoundly changed the way people communicate and interact with each other. However, we are still unclear about the long-term influence of screen media use on our physical health, mental health, and social wellbeing. Children and adolescents are in an important stage of brain development and are susceptible to the environmental influence that screen media possess. This dissertation pursued three aims to address research gaps related to screen media use among children and adolescents: 1) identify topics and knowledge gaps in screen media use research among children and adolescents …

States' Public Health Funding And Population Health Outcomes: An Examination Through A Socio-Ecological Lens, Maureen K. Akubu-Odero
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The US public health system has been underfunded for decades, despite its significant mandate of improving overall population health outcomes. This ecological study evaluates the association between state public health funding and population health outcomes and the role of state public health funding in reducing state-level health disparities. The findings show that the relationships between public health investments and improvements in health outcomes and health disparity in states are moderated by socioeconomic contextual factors. The findings suggest a need for continued and increased public health investments, tailored to community needs and context

Factors Influencing Intestinal Parasite In Black-And-White Ruffed Lemurs (Varecia Variegata), Eliette Noromalala
All Master's Theses
Ecological factors, such as feeding behavior and climatic seasonality, might influence intestinal parasite infection and patterns in non-human primates. Here, we examined if frugivory levels and climate (i.e., temperature and rainfall) were associated with parasite patterns in black-and-white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata). Feeding data using 5-min focal sampling, climate data, and fecal samples from V. variegata (n = 23) at the “Mangevo” site were collected from February through May 2019. Microscopic examinations of fecal flotation and sedimentation were done to identify and count parasites. Nematoda (Callistoura vauceli, and Strongyloides sp.) Ciliophora (Balantidium sp.), Coccidia ( …

Development Of Novel Pyridazine Derivatives And Drug Delivery Systems Against Dengue, Janae A. Culmer
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The lack of approved vaccines, medications and treatment regimens has significantly contributed to the rapid spread of mosquito-borne viruses such as Dengue and Zika virus. The complex immunopathology of these viruses presents limitations for the development and implementation of a definitive, safe and effective approach to combat infections.Previous research has demonstrated that vector control strategies such as the elimination of larval habitats, larviciding with insecticides, the use of biological agents and the application of adulticides have been unsuccessful in the reduction of viral transmission leading to the need for the continued development of antivirals. This research proposes an approach for …
Effects Of Unpaved Roads On Relative Abundance And Epigenetics Of Early Successional Lizards, David Tevs
Effects Of Unpaved Roads On Relative Abundance And Epigenetics Of Early Successional Lizards, David Tevs
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Unpaved roads may provide uniform microhabitat characteristics and impart edge effects in the adjacent landscape that mediate environmental pressures acting on small vertebrates. These features may allow species that are associated with recent disturbance to persist in aging forest patches. Further, epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation may provide these species the phenotypic plasticity necessary to occupy multiple habitats with different environmental conditions. To understand how small vertebrates use unpaved roads, the relative abundance and occurrence of Florida scrub lizards (Sceloporus woodi) and six-lined racerunners (Aspidoscelis sexlineata) were quantified using visual encounter surveys along unpaved roads …

A Contraction Based Approach To Tensor Isomorphism, Anh Kieu
A Contraction Based Approach To Tensor Isomorphism, Anh Kieu
Honors Theses
Tensor isomorphism is a hard problem in computational complexity theory. Tensor isomorphism arises not just in mathematics, but also in other applied fields like Machine Learning, Cryptography, and Quantum Information Theory (QIT). In this thesis, we develop a new approach to testing (non)-isomorphism of tensors that uses local information from "contractions" of a tensor to detect differences in global structures. Specifically, we use projective geometry and tensor contractions to create a labelling data structure for a given tensor, which can be used to compare and distinguish tensors. This contraction labelling isomorphism test is quite general, and its practical potential remains …
The Fifth Vital Sign: An Anthropological Analysis Of Productive And Unproductive Pain, Kathleen Meerscheidt
The Fifth Vital Sign: An Anthropological Analysis Of Productive And Unproductive Pain, Kathleen Meerscheidt
Honors Theses
Throughout my time as a Division I rower, I have struggled to understand the ways that I understand my own normalization of pain within a broader cultural environment that portrays pain as a mostly negative aspect of life. This moral quandary inspired me to start researching the role of pain in different socio-cultural contexts. For my thesis, I conducted original research, in the form of participant observation and semi-structured interviews, to build on what I found through an extensive literature review. First, I looked at the ways in which pain is understood within Western biomedicine and, subsequently, “Western” culture. Within …

Nurses’ Perceptions Of Their Role Utilizing Eat, Sleep, Console, In The Management Of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Cerys Eldred
Honors Theses and Capstones
Background: There is a rising prominence of infants being born and diagnosed with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) in the United States. In recent years, a new non-pharmacological method of managing these infants called Eat, Sleep, Console (ESC) has emerged. While there is mounting evidence demonstrating the positive outcomes for infants treated with this method, there is limited research regarding nurses’ perceptions of this new intervention. This study seeks to understand the nurse’s experience and role during caring for infants with NAS utilizing the ESC method in comparison to the past practices.
Methods: This study used a qualitative descriptive design to …

Does Pesticide Regulation Impact The Export Competitiveness Of Major Global Cocoa Producers?, Olaide Akin-Olagunju, Abiodun Falusi, Sulaiman Yusuf, Victor Okoruwa
Journal of African Trade
Abstract Several methods are used to evaluate competitiveness, but the non-inclusion of quality measures, despite their importance in international product markets, gives less credence to such assessments. This study evaluates export competitiveness in the cocoa sector from the context of pesticide regulations. Such regulations are now increasingly common, due to their perceived benefits for humans, animals, and the environment. The results of our study show that cocoa-exporting countries stand to derive more earnings if standards are harmonized at the Codex level. Adherence to international standards, as reflected in large standard-scaled trade values, enhances competitiveness: yet compliance capacity must be matched …

Comparison Of The Different Isoforms Of Vitamin E Against Amyloid Beta-Induced Neurodegeneration, Alp Yi̇ği̇t Özdemi̇r, Esi̇n Çeti̇n, Mehmet Ali̇ Onur
Turkish Journal of Biology
Neurodegeneration is the progressive loss of structure or function of neurons. Amyloid beta oligomers and aggregates have been linked to neurodegeneration. While previous studies have suggested that dietary α-tocopherol intake can prevent amyloid beta aggregation and protect the brain against neurotoxicity, other research, however, indicated that tocotrienol forms might be used as an alternate agent against this kind of degeneration. In the presented research, we compared the in vitro protective effects of α-tocopherol and α-tocotrienol. In this context, we formed an in vitro neurodegeneration model with primary isolated neurons and measured α-tocopherol's and α-tocotrienol's protective effects. As a result, α-tocopherol …

Higher Education And Food Access: A Case Study Of Food Access Initiatives And Their Community Impact, Rebecca Wheaton
All Master's Theses
Food security issues are being prioritized across college campuses and among student communities in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. While basic needs services are typically available on campuses, there is still a discrepancy between availability and accessibility. Ellensburg, Washington, has vulnerable food-insecure populations, including Central Washington University (CWU) students, whose access issues involve not only social, cultural, and political dimensions, but also practical considerations like transportation, distance to grocery stores, and affordability of food resources. A central concern of this research is to understand food as constitutive of different forms of symbolic, cultural, and economic capital following Bourdieu’s Theory …

Metabolic Alterations For Increased Glycogen And Poly(3-Hydroxybutyrate) Production In Cyanobacterium Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803, Nannaphat Sukkasam
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cyanobacteria are a potential biofactory for biopolymer production because they can convert greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and light to useful biopolymers. Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 is a widely used model cyanobacterium due to its simple genetic information and known biochemistry metabolism. This research aims to develop strategies to increase the accumulation and productivity of biopolymers, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and glycogen, which are required in current and future industries. Three strategies, namely genetic engineering, metabolic inhibition using chemical treatment, and culture media optimization (regarding nitrogen supply), were studied, as well as their combination to increase the PHB and/or glycogen production. Genetic engineering …

Effects Of Articular Knee Injections On Cartilage Of Knee Osteoarthritis Patients And Development Of Rapid Decalcification Method For Articular Cartilage And Subchondral Bone, Pattaranatcha Charnwichai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative joint disease that affects articular cartilage. Intra-articular injection (IA) is one of the treatments that is used to reduce pain and relieve symptoms. Triamcinolone acetonide (TA) and hyaluronic acid (HA) are frequently used in IA injections for OA treatment. Several publications have reported effects of TA, but some of HA, on articular cartilage. Moreover, for histopathological studies, articular cartilage and subchondral bones are commonly used as samples, but the decalcification process is time consuming. Thus, this study aims to compare effects of drugs used in IA injections on cartilage and chondrocytes of osteoarthritis …
