The relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem function (BEF) captivates ecologists, but the factors responsible for the direction of this relationship remain unclear. While higher ecosystem functioning at higher biodiversity levels (‘positive BEF’) is not universal in nature, negative BEF relationships seem puzzlingly rare. Here, we develop a dynamical consumer-resource model inspired by microbial decomposer communities in pitcher plant leaves to investigate BEF. We manipulate microbial diversity via controlled colonization and measure their function as total ammonia production. We test how niche partitioning among bacteria and other ecological processes influence BEF in the leaves. We find that a negative BEF can …

The Indonesian Capital Market Review
This study investigates the speed of adjustment (SOA) to target leverage for different industry sec- tors in Malaysia. Using the two-step system generalized method of moments for 415 non-financial firms from 2010 to 2021, we found that the SOA for the overall sample is 38.6% and 22.0% for total debt and long-term debt, respectively. Our paper reveals the heterogeneity of SOA based on industry sectors. The industrial sector has the slowest adjustment speed (14.1%), whereas the healthcare in- dustry has the quickest adjustment speed (80.4%) to target leverage. Our results are consistent with the dynamic capital structure theory regarding the …

The Indonesian Capital Market Review
Income inequality is a persistent phenomenon and fundamental issue of concern, especially in this new digital era, because unequal access to finance has long been recognized as a critical mechanism for generating persistent income inequality. ICT tools and approaches are being used widely today due to their convenience, omnipresence and economy. This study examines the influence of financial development, ICT, and English proficiency on income inequality in Malaysia during the period of 1979-2019. The empirical results based on the ARDL bounds test indicated that financial develop- ment and English proficiency support the hypothesis that both factors can reduce the income …
Machine Learning Approaches For Cyberbullying Detection, Roland Fiagbe
Machine Learning Approaches For Cyberbullying Detection, Roland Fiagbe
Data Science and Data Mining
Cyberbullying refers to the act of bullying using electronic means and the internet. In recent years, this act has been identifed to be a major problem among young people and even adults. It can negatively impact one’s emotions and lead to adverse outcomes like depression, anxiety, harassment, and suicide, among others. This has led to the need to employ machine learning techniques to automatically detect cyberbullying and prevent them on various social media platforms. In this study, we want to analyze the combination of some Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithms (such as Bag-of-Words and TFIDF) with some popular machine learning …

A Case Study In Program Evaluation, Iantha Wright
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
The framework for program evaluation is a systematic way of improving and accounting for public health actions by providing practical, feasible, ethical, and accurate information. As a practical, non-prescriptive tool, it guides public health professionals through the essential steps in program evaluation. The framework uses the six steps to understand how to improve and conduct assessments effectively. Additionally, it emphasizes integrating stakeholders and using ongoing evaluation strategies to plan effective interventions, improve existing programs, and demonstrate the efficient use of resources.

Survey Of Pain Curriculum Among Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Programs In The United States, John V. Rider, Vicki Khau, Kristin A. Valdes
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Occupational therapy practitioners address pain management across settings, populations, and the lifespan. Occupational therapy practitioners offer unique contributions to pain management through biopsychosocial approaches, targeting supported self-management and occupational engagement. Comprehensive pain education is necessary to prepare entry-level occupational therapy practitioners to address pain in practice, yet no standards exist in entry-level occupational therapy education. This survey describes the status of pain-related education in entry-level occupational therapy programs across the United States. A total of 41 entry-level occupational therapy programs completed the survey. Total instructional time for pain content was reported to be an average of 9.68 hours, ranging from …

Occupational Balance And Temporal Satisfaction With Life Among Occupational Therapy Students Amid Transitioning To In-Campus Classes In The Philippines, Paolo Miguel P. Bulan, Nikki Y. Pestaño, John Ray O. Suerte
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
As students transitioned back to on-campus classes, challenges affecting occupational balance (OB) and temporal satisfaction with life (TSWL) influenced their overall health and well-being. This study aimed to assess OB and TSWL among 171 occupational therapy (OT) students in the Philippines and examine the correlation between them. Participants completed the Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ11) and the Temporal Satisfaction with Life Scale (TSWLS). The mean OBQ11 score was 16.71 ± 6.87, with a median score of 17. Based on this median score, nearly half of students 43.90% (n = 75) were classified as having low OB. The TSWLS scores indicated that …

Although we are still a long way from the science fiction version of “artificial general intelligence” that thinks, feels, and refuses to “open the pod bay doors,” recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) have captured the public’s imagination and lawmakers’ interest. We now have large language models (LLMs) that can pass the bar exam, carry on (what passes for) a conversation about almost any topic, create new music, and create new visual art. These artifacts are often indistinguishable from their human-authored counterparts and yet can be produced at a speed and scale surpassing human ability.

A New Great Awakening Of Religious Freedom In America, John Witte Jr.
A New Great Awakening Of Religious Freedom In America, John Witte Jr.
Faculty Articles
While loud criticisms of religion continue to clatter in the media and the law reviews, the U.S. Supreme Court has led a great awakening of American religious freedom. In more than two dozen cases since 2011, the Court has used both the First Amendment and federal statutes to strengthen the rights of religious organizations to make their own internal decisions about employment and employee benefits. The Court has held that some forms of government aid to religion and religious education are not only permissible under the Establishment Clause, but also required under the Free Exercise and Free Speech Clauses. The …

A principal objective of the public school system in a democracy is to promote societal cohesion by way of preparing students for civic engagement. There exists a founding belief that a democratic nation ought to be composed of educated activists, run by innovators, and kept in check by involved citizens. For, indisputably, the democratic experiment—our values, our institutions—can only be upheld anew with each generation on the backs of critique, reinvention, and reinvigoration. But, as so many have mentioned when discussing the civics education paradigm, the increase in educational opportunities and the marked expansion of our school system has not …

The path to financial compensation for the wrongfully convicted can be complex and time-consuming. Exonerees often struggle to make ends meet and function in free society, let alone navigate serpentine processes while waiting years for the recovery they deserve. Securing the assistance of an attorney is often a critical step, but too few lawyers are willing to risk accepting these complicated cases on a contingency-fee basis—the only way that exoneree-clients can likely pay their lawyers without outside help.
Litigation finance—an important tool for increasing access to justice in tort cases—could help close this access to justice gap for exonerees. In …
Rethinking Health Law Architecture, Ani B. Satz
Rethinking Health Law Architecture, Ani B. Satz

Neither the individualistic regulatory health paradigm nor the vulnerable populations approach of public health can provide the legal structure necessary to address the most pressing problems in health care today. These approaches fail to address conflicts between individuals and populations as well as challenges to qualifying for care and are in inherent conflict with each other, sometimes within the same statute. As health concerns become more global, it is necessary to move past a vulnerable populations approach to a broader population approach that respects individual choice but does not sacrifice community health for liberty interests.
Climatizing National Security, Mark P. Nevitt
Climatizing National Security, Mark P. Nevitt

Is climate change a national security issue? Human security? Ecological security? This Article addresses the growing nexus between climate change and various conceptions of security with a particular emphasis on climate change's national security impacts. This Article argues that there is a growing connection between national security and climate change and a corresponding need to address the normative implications of "climatizing national security." This connection can be observed through three lenses: mitigation (reducing greenhouse gas emissions from military and national security sources); adaptation (investing in climate resilient infrastructure in an effort to prepare for climate impacts), and response (addressing climate-exacerbated …

This Essay examines Anna Nicole's surprising constitutional estates legacy in three parts. First, it overviews the bitter litigation between Anna Nicole and the estate of J. Howard Marshall II. It then turns to the pair of Supreme Court cases spawned by that litigation. Part II discusses the holding and significance of Marshall v. Marshall, a successful challenge to the scope of the wills exception to federal jurisdiction. Part III discusses the holding and significance of Stern v. Marshall, which held that Article I bankruptcy judges cannot enter final judgments on state law counterclaims. In its Conclusion, the Essay …

There are myriad ways that discrimination and bias can combine to profoundly limit inventor participation in the patent process. The utilitarian purpose of patents is to incentivize inventors to invent and disclose, so it makes sense to incentivize as large and as diverse a group as possible in order to maximize the likely output of innovative activity. This incentive is important in terms of our geopolitical aspirations as a country, but hopefully also because of our democratic commitment to provide opportunities for flourishing and reaching one's potential that are available to all.

Since the introduction of Generative AI (GenAI) in 2022, its ability to simulate human intelligence and generate content has sparked both enthusiasm and concern. While much of the criticism focuses on AI’s potential to perpetuate bias, create emotional dissonance, displace jobs, and raise ethical questions, these concerns often overlook the practical benefits of AI, particularly in legal contexts. This article examines the integration of AI into arbitration, arguing that the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA) allows parties to contractually choose AI-driven arbitration, despite traditional reservations.
This article makes three key contributions: (1) It shifts the focus from debates over AI’s personhood …
Cultivating Attentiveness To Law In India Through Legal Anthropology, Deepa Das Acevedo, Jahnavi Chamarthi
Cultivating Attentiveness To Law In India Through Legal Anthropology, Deepa Das Acevedo, Jahnavi Chamarthi
Faculty Articles
This Article reviews and analyses scholarship at the intersection of anthropology and law. The first half of the Article provides context for understanding the boundaries, animating concerns, and tensions that have characterised the anthropology of law as an area of interdisciplinary inquiry. We focus especially on the subdiscipline’s Anglo-American history and show how a promising early period of engagement dissipated as both anthropologists and legal scholars lost enthusiasm for each others’ insights and methods. Then, we expand our analysis outward. Because legal anthropology belongs within, and is increasingly attentive to, the broader field of law and society scholarship, we explore …
Legal Risk And Accountability In Development Finance: Lessons From Jam V. International Finance Corporation, Michelle Harrison, Shannon Marcoux
Legal Risk And Accountability In Development Finance: Lessons From Jam V. International Finance Corporation, Michelle Harrison, Shannon Marcoux
Perspectives
In a landmark decision in 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Jam v. International Finance Corporation that international organizations like the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private lending arm of the World Bank Group, can be sued in U.S. courts, ending the “absolute immunity” from suit that they had long claimed. The Jam lawsuit arose out of IFC’s gross mishandling of the Tata Mundra coal-fired power plant project in Gujarat, India, which has destroyed the livelihoods, environment, and way of life of local communities living in its shadow. The lawsuit, and especially the clash between IFC’s sweeping assertions of …

Child Nutrition Programs, Fall 2023: Challenges And Support Systems, Kymberle Gordon Phd
Institute of Child Nutrition, Applied Research Division
Child nutrition programs (CNPs) continue to face challenges related to rising food costs, labor shortages, product shortages, supply chain disruptions, and mental health stressors following the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examined the persistence of these challenges during the Fall 2023 school year, assessed the usefulness of support systems, and explored child nutrition professionals’ perceptions of their work and program support.
A national rapid-response survey was conducted among school nutrition and Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) professionals. Findings revealed that increased food costs, labor shortages, and product shortages remained the most significant challenges. Communication and collaboration with coworkers, industry …

This preliminary investigation explores subject pronoun expression in the PRESEEA-Cali corpus. We explore the effects of five predictor variables (2 social 3 linguistic) on 4425 tokens. Findings reveal the highest pronominal rate (29.7%) found in a continental Latin American speech community. The linguistic conditioning uncovers that grammatical person and number of the subject exerts the strongest conditioning force among all the predictor variables explored. Specifically, uno constitutes the pronoun that most strongly favors overt subjects. The social conditioning reveals that women promote overt subjects, as occurs in the Caribbean region, but contrary to findings in Medellín. Moreover, the effects of …

Utility Of Cell-Free Dna Detection In Diagnosis And Prognostication Of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma, Kamolthorn Srisuwannakit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Background: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of lymphoma and is potentially curable. Tissue biopsy for histopathology remains the gold standard for diagnosis. However, previous studies have demonstrated that plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) analysis, a non-invasive technique, is useful for the diagnosis of DLBCL. Objectives: To determine the sensitivity and specificity of IgH sequencing using plasma cfDNA from blood in DLBCL at diagnosis, and to evaluate the level of cfDNA and its clinical correlation. Methods: A single-center, case-control, prospective study was conducted at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital between May 2024 and December 2024. Newly diagnosed DLBCL …

Immunotherapeutic Properties Of Virus Like Particles Displaying Allergens In A Mouse Model Of House Dust Mite Allergy, Piyachat Patniboon
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
House dust mite (HDM) represents one of the most prominent sources of allergens. The rising prevalence of HDM-induced allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma or atopic dermatitis is a major global health challenge. Allergen immunotherapy (AIT), by frequent administrations of HDM allergen extracts, is the unique treatment capable of alleviating the Th2-biased allergic response through the induction of immune tolerance. However, AIT faces limitations in terms of duration, efficacy and safety, explaining the poor patient adherence. Clinical efficacy of HDM extract-based AIT was shown to be dependent on the selection of patients sensitized to the two major HDM …
