Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems for mental healthcare (MHCare) have been ever-growing after realizing the importance of early interventions for patients with chronic mental health (MH) conditions. Social media (SocMedia) emerged as the go-to platform for supporting patients seeking MHCare. The creation of peer-support groups without social stigma has resulted in patients transitioning from clinical settings to SocMedia supported interactions for quick help. Researchers started exploring SocMedia content in search of cues that showcase correlation or causation between different MH conditions to design better interventional strategies. User-level Classification-based AI systems were designed to leverage diverse SocMedia data from various MH conditions, …

This study underscores the profound influence of rock joints, both persistent and non-persistent with rock bridges, on the stability and behavior of rock masses—a critical consideration for sustainable engineering and natural structures, especially in rock slope stability. Leveraging the lattice spring-based synthetic rock mass (LS-SRM) modeling approach, this research aims to understand the impact of persistent and non-persistent joint parameters on rock slope stability. The Slope Model, a Synthetic Rock Mass (SRM) approach-based code, is used to investigate the joint parameters such as dip angle, spacing, rock bridge length, and trace overlapping. The results show that the mobilizing zones in …

Cold stress is an important factor limiting rice production and distribution. Identifying factors that contribute to cold tolerance in rice is of primary importance. While some plant specific genetic factors involved in cold tolerance have been identified, the role of the rice microbiome remains unexplored. In this study, we evaluated the influence of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) with the ability of phosphate solubilization on rice cold tolerance and survival. To reach this goal, inoculated and uninoculated 2-week-old seedlings were cold stressed and evaluated for survival and other phenotypes such as electrolyte leakage (EL) and necessary elements for cold tolerance. …

Importance Of Conserved Hydrophobic Pocket Region In Yeast Mitoribosomal Ml44 Protein For Mitotranslation And Transcript Preference, Jodie M. Box, Margo E. Higgins, Rosemary A. Stuart
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
The mitochondrial ribosome (mitoribosome) is responsible for the synthesis of key oxidative phosphorylation subunits encoded by the mitochondrial genome. Defects in mitoribosomal function therefore can have serious consequences for the bioenergetic capacity of the cell. Mutation of the conserved mitoribosomal mL44 protein has been directly linked to childhood cardiomyopathy and progressive neurophysiology issues. To further explore the functional significance of the mL44 protein in supporting mitochondrial protein synthesis, we have performed a mutagenesis study of the yeast mL44 homolog, the MrpL3/mL44 protein. We specifically investigated the conserved hydrophobic pocket region of the MrpL3/mL44 protein, where the known disease-related residue …
Making Sense Of 303 Creative: A Free Speech Solution In Search Of A Problem, David S. Schwartz
Making Sense Of 303 Creative: A Free Speech Solution In Search Of A Problem, David S. Schwartz
Constitutional Commentary, Vol. 37 and later (2023–present)
In 303 Creative v. Elenis, the Supreme Court held that a website designer had a First Amendment right to refuse to create wedding websites for same-sex couples, even though she would create such websites for opposite-sex couples and despite the fact that her refusal violated a Colorado antidiscrimination law. 303 Creative purports to resolve a tension between freedom of speech and public accommodations laws as applied to “creative professionals” whose products or services are expressive. But this problem is largely theoretical. It did not really exist outside a small handful of ginned-up controversies between purportedly creative wedding-related businesses run by …

The Volokh Briefs: Drawing The Line Against Compelled Speech In Public Accommodations, Dale Carpenter
Constitutional Commentary, Vol. 37 and later (2023–present)
Although I generally support the result in 303 Creative, my aim here is neither to fully explain nor to defend the decision. That’s a project for another day. Instead, in this symposium commemorating Professor Volokh’s work, my aim is to outline the legal position he developed, which aligned with and may have influenced the decision. I’ll focus on what I believe are the most important briefs in three key cases: Elane Photography (2013), Masterpiece Cakeshop (2018), and 303 Creative (2023) itself. Collectively, I’ll refer to these as “the Volokh briefs.” While others contributed, Volokh and his First Amendment amicus clinic …

A dual phase high-entropy (Hf,Nb,Ta,Ti,Zr)C–(Hf,Nb,Ta,Ti,Zr)B2 ultra-high temperature ceramic was synthesized using a single step boro-carbothermal reduction route. The synthesized powder was densified by spark plasma sintering at 2000°C, resulting in complete solid solution formation and a relative density of ≈99%. The dual phase ceramic was 43 vol% high-entropy carbide and 57 vol% high-entropy boride. The grain sizes were 0.85 ± 0.34 µm for the carbide and 0.87 ± 0.33 µm for the boride with minimal residual oxide (0.2 vol%) detected in the microstructure. The resulting composition had a higher microhardness than the individual boride and carbide ceramics across the range …

Infection is a leading cause of total joint arthroplasty failure. Current preventative measures incorporate antibiotics into the poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement that anchors the implant into the natural bone. With bacterial resistance to antibiotics on the rise, the development of alternative antibacterial materials is crucial to mitigate infection. Borate bioactive glass, 13–93-B3, has been studied previously for use in orthopedic applications due to its ability to be incorporated into bone cements and other scaffolds, convert into hydroxyapatite (HA)-like layer, and enhance the osseointegration and antibacterial properties of the material. The purpose of this study is to better understand …

This brief paper explores the controversy surrounding Senator John Fetterman's sartorial choices of casual attire in the hyper-professionalized space of the United States Senate. Fetterman's clothing choices transcend mere fashion; they embody a statement of class identity and challenge the established power dynamics within the Senate. His attire reflects Pittsburgh's industrial and labor-oriented history, in contrast to the conventional, affluent image most associated with politicians. Although controversial, Fetterman's white male privilege minimized the consequences of his indecorous behavior. The reactions to Fetterman's attire highlight the debate over what constitutes appropriate professional decorum, unveiling the underlying biases and demonstrating how something …
Terra-Lsd1 Phase Separation Promotes R-Loop Formation For Telomere Maintenance In Alt Cancer Cells, Nicholas J. Reiter
Terra-Lsd1 Phase Separation Promotes R-Loop Formation For Telomere Maintenance In Alt Cancer Cells, Nicholas J. Reiter
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
The telomere repeat-containing RNA (TERRA) forms R-loops to promote homology-directed DNA synthesis in the alternative lengthening of telomere (ALT) pathway. Here we report that TERRA contributes to ALT via interacting with the lysine-specific demethylase 1A (LSD1 or KDM1A). We show that LSD1 localizes to ALT telomeres in a TERRA dependent manner and LSD1 function in ALT is largely independent of its demethylase activity. Instead, LSD1 promotes TERRA recruitment to ALT telomeres via RNA binding. In addition, LSD1 and TERRA undergo phase separation, driven by interactions between the RNA binding properties of LSD1 and the G-quadruplex structure of TERRA. Importantly, the …

The N-terminal region of the human lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) has no predicted structural elements, contains a nuclear localization signal (NLS), undergoes multiple posttranslational modifications (PTMs), and acts as a protein-protein interaction hub. This intrinsically disordered region (IDR) extends from core LSD1 structure, resides atop the catalytic active site, and is known to be dispensable for catalysis. Here, we show differential nucleosome binding between the full-length and an N terminus deleted LSD1 and identify that a conserved NLS and PTM containing element of the N terminus contains an alpha helical structure, and that this conserved element impacts demethylation. Enzyme assays …

The present study focuses on the technique of hardness removal by using a novel reactor performing an electrocoagulation (EC) process. The variation of alkalinity is also recorded. Continuous flow experiments were conducted for Total Hardness (TH) removal using a transparent plastic reactor using aluminum plate electrodes that have holes so that the water flows through the plates in a zigzag way. The influence of various operating parameters such as the number of plates (two and four), flow rate (600, 1000 L/h), and water type (Tigris River & rejected water from Reverse Osmosis system RO) was investigated. The results showed that …

Beam exit windows are crucial components of any particle accelerator as they provide an interface between the beamline vacuum and target material at atmospheric media. For high beam power machines, special materials and designs are required to withstand high radiation and mechanical loads, while minimizing energy loss during transition and maximizing window lifetime. This research investigates the impact of electron beam exposure to bulk CrMnV and CrMnTiV high entropy alloys (HEAs) with the primary goal of identifying suitable candidate materials for the design of robust and durable exit window settings. The selection criteria include intrinsic characteristics, power dissipation, and mechanical …

Amorphous selenium (a-Se) is a promising semiconductor for a variety of photoconductive applications, predominantly in X-ray detection. In addition, material properties introduce several other potential applications in nonlinear optics. Photodarkening (PD) presents an interesting area of study; when exposed to band-region light, metastable structural changes induce a shift in the band edge and increase tail absorption. In this work, we investigate these effects utilizing a near-infrared (NIR) probe to avoid generating any darkening during beam transmission. We observe an unexpected result; here, we present the effects of band region exposure in NIR transmission (1570 nm). We observe a shift from …

Smart contracts (i.e., electronic agreements written in computer code) can resolve contractual disputes instantaneously, without resorting to court. For workers and consumers—whose lack of bargaining power often requires them to accept pre-drafted contracts on a take-it-or-leave-it basis—reducing the role that courts play in resolving contractual disputes can be problematic. While courts could deploy traditional interpretive doctrines (e.g., contra proferentem) to interpret vague contract language against the drafter’s interests, smart contracts can be programmed to interpret contract language in the drafting party’s favor. Because the drafting party knows that they will have the ability to interpret vague language in their own …

Attitudes towards immigration have been shown to be driven by dehumanization and disgust. The more people dehumanize immigrants and the more disgusted they feel, the more negative attitudes they tend to have toward immigrants. However, little is known about how exposure to social media content that links dehumanization, disgust, and immigration influences users’ attitudes on this issue. This is important to consider because the majority of adults in the United States are on social media. We used Twitter data, machine learning, and sentiment analysis to investigate whether exposure to dehumanizing or disgust-eliciting tweets about immigration impacts users’ own sentiment toward …

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Our personal and collective experiences of ableism and disability brought us together to envision anti-ableist and disability justice pedagogies in social work education. We begin by describing, defining, and reviewing key terminology and concepts, including disability, ableism, and saneism, by drawing on social work and interdisciplinary literature and situating disabled students’ and educators’ experiences in social work education. We provide definitions of anti-ableism and disability justice (e.g., Sins Invalid, 2016, 2019) and a brief overview of how anti-ableism and disability justice have been articulated in social work and related literature. We highlight the broader pedagogical approaches that have inspired our …

Drafting the Architectural Works Copyright Protection Act of 1990 (“AWCPA”) consisted of a bizarre hodgepodge of considerations. Ostensibly, the goal of the Act was to bring the United States unquestionably into compliance with the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, which the United States had just recently joined, with as minimal an impact on U.S. law as possible. In reality, this goal — itself not without built-in tensions — was but one of several competing forces at play in the drafting process. The other forces generally fell into three camps. There were the proponents of preserving …

Effects Of Internalized Stigma On Quality Of Life And Stress In Undergraduate Students With Chronic Health Conditions, Kevin R. Criswell Phd
Psychology Faculty Publications
Students with mental and/or physical chronic health conditions (CHCs) are at risk for diminished quality of life (QoL) and greater stress. Internalized stigma (the incorporation of a negative stereotype into one’s identity) may help explain this quality of life (QoL) and stress disparity. While prior work demonstrated that internalized stigma affects health outcomes, studies tend to examine single or small sets of outcomes, and studies of internalized stigma in students with mental and/or physical CHCs are sparse. The present study examined the effects of internalized stigma in three cohorts of students with mental and/or physical CHCs (2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23; n …

This Article argues that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) are less likely to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions than typically believed, and that a misconceived narrative of spending effectiveness is now threatening to undercut the perceived urgency of further legislative action on climate change in the United States. With the passage of BIL and IRA, the United States has committed to a climate law strategy predominated by public spending in lieu of regulatory mandates. Recent studies, including studies produced by the U.S. federal government, predict that this spending will push U.S. annual greenhouse gas emissions …

An Examination Of The Visual And Textual Influences On The Anthology Of American Folk Music, Ben Collier
History Theses
The Anthology of American Folk Music is a collection of eight-four selections of southern vernacular recordings made for commercial record labels in the 1920s and 1930s and assembled into a unified collage by Harry Smith. Smith was an experimental filmmaker, painter, and self-taught anthropologist with a deep interest in renaissance hermeticism and mysticism who worked with Moe Asch in 1952 to release the six-record set and accompanying handbook on Folkways Records. The release was heralded by musicians and critics as an essential piece of influence on the folk music revival. Despite this, the Anthology sold poorly and quickly faced legal …

Labor unions in the United States have experienced decades of decline, but recent years have seen a rebirth of union campaigns and successes. Because unions are once again becoming a threat to large companies, it is reasonable to assume that efforts to discourage organizing efforts will increase and become even more robust in the near future. Although traditionally, companies have worked to suspend union organizing through captive audience meetings in which unions were discussed via verbal or written modes, more recent means of reaching workers with anti-union messages incorporate a variety of communication strategies to get the message across. As …

Increased globalization of the world economy, growth in human migration, and rapid devel-opments in science and technology have required people to develop intercultural commu-nication skills. Teachers play a crucial role in developing intercultural competence among students in our globalized, multilingual classrooms.
