Multi-Scale Color Correction And Contrast Enhancement Via Leaf In Wind Optimization For Improved Weld Defect Detection In Non- Destructive Testing, Senthil Anand N Mr
Theses and Dissertations
Image enhancement is an essential process in numerous fields, including industrial inspection, medical imaging, remote sensing, and photography, as it improves image quality for accurate analysis and interpretation. Among the advanced image enhancement techniques, Focused Super Resolution (FSR) with Self-Attention Single Candidate Optimizer-based Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) is specifically designed for weld defect detection, while Advanced Image Enhancement through Multi-scale Color Correction and Contrast Stretching using Leaf in Wind Optimization focuses on enhancing the overall visual quality of images. Although both approaches aim to improve image quality, they differ significantly in their objectives and application areas. The FSR method concentrates …

Reality television cast members are poorly compensated, working under tremendously restrictive and controlling contracts. While actors and writers who are members of the Screen Actors Guild of America and the Screen Writers Guild of America have collectively bargained with studios for better wages, terms, and conditions of employment, contestants on reality television series have gone it alone – auditioning for a series and having no choice other than to accept the contract provided by the studios. In December 2024, at the end of the Biden administration, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) filed a complaint on behalf of the reality …

Code-mixing, a linguistic phenomenon where multiple languages are blended within a single text, has become increasingly prevalent in multilingual societies, particularly in digital communication. The CoLI-Dravidian shared task, organized as part of Forum for Information Retrieval and Evaluation (FIRE) 2024, aimed to address these challenges by inviting researchers to develop models capable of classifying words in code-mixed texts involving Dravidian languages — Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Tulu - interwoven with English. The task presents significant challenges due to the complexity of linguistic structures, mixed-language tokens, and dialectal variations, especially in low-resource languages like those in the Dravidian family. The participating …

Our previous research identified 12 small Cajal body-specific RNAs (scaRNAs) with reduced expression in the right ventricle in infant patients with tetralogy of Fallot. Likewise, we showed that there were significant changes in mRNA processing in the RV in these patients. ScaRNAs play a crucial role in the biochemical maturation of spliceosomal RNAs (pseudouridylation and 2'-O-methylation). We showed that variations in scaRNA1 levels resulted in changes in alternative splicing in human cells. To investigate further the role that scaRNAs play in mRNA processing, we examine here the impact of knocking down scaRNA1 in quail myoblast cells (Coturnix japonica, …
Responding To Police Perjury, David R. Katner
Responding To Police Perjury, David R. Katner
Cleveland State Law Review
The way in which defense lawyers phrase their challenges in criminal proceedings where police witnesses are thought to have committed perjury might place decisionmakers in the awkward position of unintentionally or intentionally coming to the aid of the witnesses who are unable to defend themselves during closing arguments. This article proposes a shift in the paradigm of how defense counsel characterize and handle testimony that seems untruthful, without having to engage in tactics that intend to be disrespectful to all police officers, let alone to the witnesses in the trial. Creating a continuum from absolute truthfulness to absolute untruthfulness and …

Sterilized Speech: The U.S. Impacts Of E.U. Digital Service Rules, Jelena Laketić
Cleveland State Law Review
In recent decades, online platforms have transformed how people communicate and interact. Speech on platforms has enabled commerce, driven political processes, facilitated revolution, and built communities. Distinguishing between beneficial and harmful content, however, has grown increasingly difficult. Beginning with the new legal framework for the illegal distribution of copyrighted works and the dissemination of audiovisual and terrorist content, the E.U. has taken the global lead and change in regulating online speech. The culmination of this approach has been the recent adoption of the Digital Services Act (DSA), which promises to revolutionize online platforms’ liability. This Article argues that the new …

Making Criminal Penalties Collar-Blind On The Federal Level, Claire Osborn-Wright
Cleveland State Law Review
This paper is intended to be the first in a series of papers that addresses whether lower income individuals suffer all of the following at much higher rates than their percentage of the population would suggest should be the case: (1) police stops for questioning; (2) arrests; (3) prosecutions; (4) convictions; and (5) lengthy post-conviction incarcerations. In particular, this first paper addresses the question of whether prison sentences imposed for “blue-collar crimes” are significantly longer than prison sentences imposed for “white-collar crimes.” In general, “blue-collar crimes” refer to crimes that are committed by individuals who possess blue-collar professions and “white-collar …

Replicating Vignoles Et Al. Results On Multidimensional Self-Construal: Comparing The United States, East Asia, Southeast Asia, And Latin America, Jon Lorenz A. Lim
Master's Theses
Contemporary research on self-construal indicates that people define and perceive themselves either as independent or interdependent. Self-construal scales have become the most common method to quantitatively measure both types of self-construal across the United States, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Multidimensional measures of the self tend to be more accurate in defining the self than earlier dichotomous scales. In general, European Americans and Latin Americans perceived themselves as independent and East and Southeast Asians as interdependent. In the current study, undergraduate European American, East Asian American, Southeast Asian American, and Latin American students from San Jose State University …

Union Employees’ Perceptions And Lived Experiences Of Organizational Culture And Job Satisfaction In Michigan Manufacturing Organizations, Angela Wantuck
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Manufacturing organizational cultures steeped in tradition, corporate loyalty, and paternalistic values have experienced a decrease in union employee engagement and organizational satisfaction. Manufacturing leaders are concerned with this decrease as a primary indicator of employee walkouts or union strikes, impeding the manufacturing process, and affecting market share, profitability, and local economies. The purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenology study was to explore the union employees’ perceptions and lived experiences of organizational culture and job satisfaction in Michigan manufacturing organizations. Shaped by Schein’s organizational culture theory, the research question queried the perceptions of the union-represented employees as a subculture in the …

Prostate Cancer (PCa) is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among men. In Louisiana (LA), Black men are disproportionately diagnosed at later stages compared to White men. This study explores environmental risk factors as potential intermediate variables linking race to cancer diagnosis stage. The Louisiana Tumor Registry data included 24,647 male patients diagnosed with PCa in LA between 2010 and 2018. Among them, 15,875 (64.40%) were Caucasian American (CA) and 8772 (35.59%) African American (AA). Mediation analysis using multiple additive regression trees (MART) identified possible intermediate variables that potentially explain the observed disparity. …

The emergence of both task-specific single-modality models and general-purpose multimodal large models presents new opportunities, but also introduces challenges, particularly regarding adversarial attacks. In high-stakes domains like healthcare, these attacks can severely undermine model reliability and their applicability in real-world scenarios, highlighting the critical need for research focused on adversarial robustness. This study investigates the behavior of multimodal models under various adversarial attack scenarios. We conducted experiments involving two modalities: images and texts. Our findings indicate that multimodal models exhibit enhanced resilience against adversarial attacks compared to their single-modality counterparts. This supports our hypothesis that the integration of multiple modalities …

Hydrological surface loads, such as snowpack and soil moisture, are the main drivers of seasonal crustal movements as seen by space geodetic techniques. In addition to that, seawater sometimes exerts additional forces for coastal stations, and the atmosphere often plays an important role for stations within continents. Here we report a case in and around the Arabian Peninsula. Despite little seasonal hydrological changes there, stations show fairly uniform seasonal vertical crustal movements, characterized by ~ 1 cm winter subsidence, over the entire region. We found that they are mainly driven by the atmospheric loading. Differences in their amplitudes are compensated …

Infants' Visual Preference For Expansive And Contractive Body Postures: An Eye-Tracking Study, Maryam Rostami-Aghoui, Caroline Floccia, Farid Pazhoohi
School of Psychology
Nonverbal communication is pivotal in early social and emotional development, with body postures serving as crucial cues. While extensive research has explored infants' recognition of emotions from facial expressions, a significant gap remains in understanding their visual inclinations towards body postures. Despite some studies on adults, there has been a lack of investigation into how infants respond to deliberate displays, particularly using eye-tracking methods. This research addresses this gap by examining whether infants exhibit a preference for expansive postures over contractive ones. A sample of 18 infants aged 12–24 months participated in the study, with their gaze patterns measured across …

Healing Circulos(Circles): Putting Our Educator's Mask First, Janet Martinez-Angeles
Dissertations
Educators play a pivotal role in supporting students throughout their educational journeys. In addition to academic instruction, they provide vital guidance for students' social, emotional, and personal development. They work tirelessly to help students navigate the complexities of education and life, often while shouldering multiple responsibilities and roles beyond the classroom. This dynamic contributes to high attrition rates and weakens the educational system. Much like the familiar safety instructions on an airplane, where passengers are reminded to put on their oxygen masks before assisting others, educators must be given the space, resources, and support to tend to their well-being before …

Introduction: Reduced pain perception following a persistent noxious stimulus during a study session (short-term habituation) is believed to be partially mediated by descending inhibitory mechanisms, although these mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. We examined the hypothesis that cardiopulmonary baroreceptor would significantly increase short-term habituation in chronic back pain (CBP) patients.
Methods: A short-term habituation protocol was utilized that involved 1-sec pulses (×10) at 105% heat pain threshold on the anterior forearm at 0.5 Hz. Cardiopulmonary baroreceptor unloading was performed via lower body negative pressure (LBNP) that reduces central venous pressure to elicit a reflex increase in sympathetic nerve activity. …
