Coal Geology & Exploration

Background Grouting in surrounding rocks serves as a conventional approach to controlling disasters in coal mine roadways. The developmental degree of fractures significantly influences the reinforcement and sealing effects of grouting. Methods To determine the changes in the impermeability of fractured surrounding rocks before and after grouting, this study investigated sandstones—the most common sedimentary rocks in coal mines. Using laboratory experiments and numerical simulations, this study explored the permeability variations of sandstone specimens with varying fracture numbers under different confining pressures and assessed the impact of grouting on their seepage performance. Through triaxial compression-seepage experiments using a Rock Top multi-field …

Regularity And Mechanisms Of Water-Sand Inrushes Within Mining-Activated Faults, Zhang Shichuan, Huang Pu, Li Yangyang, Wang Chenggong, Wu Zhenhua

Coal Geology & Exploration

Background During underground coal mining, water-sand mixtures within faults may rush into mine floors. The water-sand inrushes are especially prominent under the conditions of high water-yield properties and loose filling structures in fault zones, severely threatening the safe mining of coal mines. Previous studies focus primarily on the impact of a single factor on inrushes. Hence, it is significant to systematical investigate the regularity of water-sand inrushes within faults under the combined effects of multiple factors. Methods Based on the fluid and granular mechanic theories, this study derived the instability criterion and flow formulas of water-sand mixtures. Using orthogonal experiments …

Unpacking Digital Transformation – Constructing A Framework Based On Industry Use Cases, Khawaja Asjad Saeed, Andrew William Green, Alison Brooke Hedrick

Faculty Articles

Based on industry use cases, we identify six distinct types of digital transformation (DT), each grounded in a specific concept or enabling technology. These DT types can be implemented individually or combined to drive transformation initiatives. While deploying a single DT type often focuses on improving operational efficiency or streamlining existing workflows, initiatives that combine multiple DT types tend to pursue more ambitious goals, such as the creation of new products, services, or business models. However, the complexity increases significantly with the integration of multiple DT types, as organizations must not only address behavioral changes but also overcome technical challenges …

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in females and remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths for women worldwide. The cellular and molecular basis of breast tumorigenesis is not completely understood partly due to the lack of human research models which simulate the development of breast cancer. Here, we developed a method for generating functional mammary-like cells (MCs) from human-induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). The iPSC-MCs closely resemble human primary MCs at cellular, transcriptional, and functional levels. Using this method, a breast cancer model was generated using patient-derived iPSCs harboring germline

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Resistance to multi-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) is a major clinical concern in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Herein, we aimed to uncover the mechanisms underlying pan-TKI resistance and to identify potential therapeutic targets. We used multiple TKI-resistant HCC cell lines to identify caveolin-1 (CAV1) as a key driver of therapeutic resistance. CAV1 downregulation induced apoptosis, inhibited metastasis and restored TKI sensitivity in both inherent and acquired TKI-resistant HCC cells. Mechanistically, in acquired TKI-resistant cells aberrant CAV1/STAT3/P70S6K signalling is required for their survival, motility, and invasiveness. CAV1 inhibition reduced expression of dormancy regulators E-cadherin, RAC1 and p21, enhanced cancer stemness markers, and …

Unmasking A New Dialect Of Deception: Leveraging The Federal Trade Commission To Combat Deceptive And Exploitative Corporate Policies, Hani Baltagi Jul 2025

Unmasking A New Dialect Of Deception: Leveraging The Federal Trade Commission To Combat Deceptive And Exploitative Corporate Policies, Hani Baltagi

Cleveland State Law Review

Corporate social responsibility initiatives have transformed fair labor policies into powerful marketing tools, but the gap between the public promise to embrace ethical labor practices and actual corporate compliance with such practices has widened. This has the effect of not only impeding the average consumer’s purchasing decision, but perpetuating—if not catalyzing—labor exploitation across the world. The existence of this paradigm thus necessitates additional, heightened intervention by none other than Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

The FTC’s three-pronged test for deception—previously created to combat other forms of deceptive practices—provides an accountability framework for deceptive marketing claims that utilize unfollowed, self-adopted corporate fair …

For The Greater Good: Civil Commitment For Addiction Amid The Overdose Epidemic, Steven P. Meerschaert

Cleveland State Law Review

America is facing a reckoning born of its own duality. Our society is gradually embracing an increasingly permissive stance on recreational drug use, while at the same time we lament the human costs of addiction. What the media has dubbed the “opioid epidemic” has seen increases in drug addiction diagnoses and opioid-involved overdose deaths nearly every year since 1999. In a rush to designate guilty parties and to crown a “gold standard” for treatment options, we have focused on theoretically flawed approaches that fail to follow the science precisely. At the same time, we dismiss validated treatment modalities in their …
