Contextualizing Egyptian-Themed Art In Pompeiian Shops, Kelsey Myers
The Ozark Historical Review
This project focuses on the art historical, architectural, and archaeological evidence outside the domus to investigate the multivalent messaging communicated by Egyptian imagery in Pompeii’s civic and commercial spaces. By examining the artifacts and images commissioned by traders and craftsmen in their production and shop spaces, this research offers a bottom-up approach to Roman culture and society to balance the textual based top-down perspective that has dominated the discipline. Focusing on foreign-themed objects and images in these spaces, this study also explores the reception and adoption of foreign/eastern influences by the lower social strata of Romans in a multiethnic empire.

Dual-Purpose Communications And The Modern Attorney's Need For Circuit Court Uniformity, Kipp Garrett
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
In January 2023, the Supreme Court of the United States heard oral arguments in In re Grand Jury regarding the proper and applicable test to determine whether attorney-client privilege can be invoked in dual-purpose communications between a business and its legal counsel. Attorneys across the country were hoping the Court would provide an answer, ending the three-way circuit split concerning the appropriate test. Unfortunately, the Court ultimately dismissed certiorari as “improvidently granted” without an explanation. As a result, there are three major tests that federal courts use to decide whether communications between businesses and their legal counsel are protected: …
Breaking Down Broken Banks: The Case For A New Regulatory And Supervisory Framework, Federico Curbelo
Breaking Down Broken Banks: The Case For A New Regulatory And Supervisory Framework, Federico Curbelo
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
Bank failures are systemic breakdowns in regulatory and supervisory frameworks that threaten the financial bedrock of the United States economy and can potentially cause panic and contagion to the broader banking sector. Although banks function as standalone institutions, when one bank fails, it often takes down others with it. Silicon Valley Bank (“SVB”) was one such bank whose failure temporarily destabilized a whole sector and prompted important questions about the effectiveness of the current financial regulation and supervision scheme.
This Note argues that the current regulatory and supervisory categorization scheme that the Federal Reserve uses to keep banks in …

How Civil Society Organizations Build Resilience In The Face Of Financial And Political Pressures: Lessons From Czechia, Hungary, And Bulgaria, Merrill Sovner
Journal of Nonprofit Innovation
How are some civil society organizations (CSOs) able to pivot and innovate in the face of political hostility and funding withdrawal, while others shrink or become inactive? It posits that it’s not just the external environment, funding, or degree of political pressure, but attributes intrinsic to each CSO that narrows the range of possible responses. It is based on sample of CSOs in Czechia, Hungary and Bulgaria that faced political pressures and funding withdrawal between 2010 and 2019. CSOs responded in three ways: reduced staff and expenditures, replaced lost funding while operating in a similar way, or reframed their work, …

From Silence To Evidence: Strengthening Media Reporting Protocols To Codify Ecocide In War Zones, Rodina Alaa
From Silence To Evidence: Strengthening Media Reporting Protocols To Codify Ecocide In War Zones, Rodina Alaa
COP30
Ecocide, or the intentional destruction of environmental annihilation during wars, attacks important ecosystems, like forests, rivers, and agricultural lands, and has long-term negative impacts on both nature and human life. Although the media could be an agent on the frontlines of preventing and exposing such crimes, fragmented reporting standards, suppression of journalists, and absence of coordinating mechanisms weaken its effectiveness. Based on two case studies, Ukraine, where citizen-driven platforms such as EcoZagroza have allowed real-time evidence to be documented, and Gaza, where journalists are the targeted victims in an attempt to erase any evidence about the environment, this paper demonstrates …
Climate Justice Across Borders: Responding To Ecocide And Displacement, Camila Micheletti Flores
Climate Justice Across Borders: Responding To Ecocide And Displacement, Camila Micheletti Flores
COP30
This policy paper examines how climate change accelerates cross-border displacement, especially in regions most vulnerable to ecocide and environmental degradation. Climate refugees remain unprotected under international law, as the 1951 Refugee Convention excludes environmental grounds for asylum, leaving populations exposed to human rights violations and securitized responses. It analyzes legal and institutional gaps, highlighting failures in global climate governance and the disproportionate risks faced by SIDS and other affected regions. The paper calls for COP30 to mandate a high-level UNFCCC forum on climate displacement and ecocide to build a just, cooperative, and rights-based international framework.

Gender-Based Violence In A Warming World: Advancing Mitigation And Adaptation Through Gender-Responsive Climate Policies, Salsa Putri Sihombing
COP30
Climate change, accelerating across multiple dimensions, creates disproportionate environmental costs which primarily affect women, children, gender diverse people and other marginalized groups. Research evidence shows that climate stressors create more vulnerability for women and girls because they lead to increased gender-based violence (GBV) through population movements, resource shortages, and institutional breakdowns. This policy paper examines the intersectionality between GBV and climate change to help governments, donors, and civil society organizations establish gender justice and GBV prevention as essential components of climate mitigation and adaptation strategies. The evidence from Mozambique, India, and Uganda shows essential policy and financial gaps. Policy recommendations …
