Here We Rio Again: The 2016 Olympic Games And The Reproduction Of Spatial Struggles By Mega-Events In Rio De Janeiro, Jorge A. Morales
Chronos
This paper analyzes the unequal nature of urban development projects associated with international megaevents in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, through the lenses of race and social class. By doing this, I seek to demonstrate how spatial struggles associated with such urban development projects are part of a longstanding pattern of socio-cultural conflict between the Brazilian elite and the urban poor. This paper specifically examines the spatial struggles embodied by the destruction of Morro do Castelo during the early 1920s, and the removal of favelas, including Vila Autódromo, between 2009 and 2016. This research is based on information from primary documents …

Journal of Academic Research and Innovation
Glioblastoma (GBM), categorised as Grade 4 IDH-wildtype, is a malignant and aggressive primary brain cancer in adults which exhibits persistent resistance to current therapies. Despite improvements in diagnosis and treatment, patient prognosis remains poor, with a median survival of 12-15 months. The significant inefficiencies of current treatments, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, highlight the need for additional effective therapeutic strategies. The infiltrative nature of GBM helps with its aggression, proliferation and survival. Furthermore, a major issue in treatment is the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which acts as a blockade for many molecules entering the brain, including …

Dark Laughter In Uniform: Humor And Militarism In Gregory Burke’S Black Watch, Pelin Gölcük Mirza
Dark Laughter In Uniform: Humor And Militarism In Gregory Burke’S Black Watch, Pelin Gölcük Mirza
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Gregory Burke’s Black Watch, which premiered at the 2006 Edinburgh International Festival, focuses on the experiences of Scottish soldiers deployed to Iraq in 2003. The play makes extensive use of dark humor by juxtaposing laughter and pain, valor and absurdity, military and civilian life, in order to reveal the contradictions of contemporary militarism. Rather than celebrating patriotism or sacrifice, Burke undermines the romanticized narratives of heroism through profanity, abrupt shifts in tone, and mock-heroic scenes. Dark humor, thus, functions as both a coping strategy for soldiers’ trauma and a satirical device that subverts political rhetoric about the war. By …
