The Impact Of Covid-19 Related Virtual Learning On Parents Raising Children With Learning Disabilities, Ty'sheka Ne'cole Lambert
The Impact Of Covid-19 Related Virtual Learning On Parents Raising Children With Learning Disabilities, Ty'sheka Ne'cole Lambert
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic caused major disruptions in education as schools abruptly closed and students transitioned to virtual learning. This shift placed significant strain on parents, especially those raising children with learning disabilities who required consistent accommodations and support. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore parents’ perceptions of how COVID-19–related virtual learning affected their children’s academic performance, emotional well-being, and daily functioning. Guided by Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, the study examined how family, school, and community systems shaped these experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 parents of children with learning disabilities. Using Braun and Clarke’s (2013) six-step …

Transnational Networks Of Film Repetitions In East Asia : Proliferation And Limitations, Roman Kusaiko
Transnational Networks Of Film Repetitions In East Asia : Proliferation And Limitations, Roman Kusaiko
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
A growing number of contemporary film critics, influencers, and audiences criticize film remaking, a tested and successful Hollywood practice. The main complaints are a lack of originality, overreliance on repeated titles, and an openly commercial nature. Despite criticism, film remakes have existed for decades and are a vivid and resilient form of recycling under new cultural and geopolitical circumstances. Contemporary film remaking reflects the impacts of globalization, transnationalization, and the rapid development of new media and digitalization.
Nevertheless, there is a tendency to theorize on film remaking, often relying on the dichotomy of the source and a remake or, less …
The Mcgill Diverse Face Database: 92 Complex Mental States Across Socially Perceived Racial Categories, Gunnar Schmidtmann
The Mcgill Diverse Face Database: 92 Complex Mental States Across Socially Perceived Racial Categories, Gunnar Schmidtmann
School of Health Professions
Theory of Mind (ToM)—the ability to infer others’ mental states—is fundamental to social cognition. Social categorization, the grouping of individuals into in-group or out-group categories, shapes these inferences. These processes co-occur during facial perception, with recent research suggesting both shared neurocognitive mechanisms and modulation of ToM by social category cues. However, existing tools for studying the impact of racial diversity on social cognition are limited: some databases prioritize racial representation but restrict stimuli to the six basic emotions, while others broaden mental state diversity but lack diversity in social appearance. Here we introduce the McGill Diverse Face Database, a validated set …

Romances: A Performer's Guide To Tchaikovsky's Art Songs Through His Queer Sexuality, Nathaniel Reed Himes Mcbride
Romances: A Performer's Guide To Tchaikovsky's Art Songs Through His Queer Sexuality, Nathaniel Reed Himes Mcbride
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation explores the art songs of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky through the lens of his queer sexuality by offering performers interpretive strategies that focus on themes of desire, repression, identity, intimacy, and longing. By placing these songs within both their 19th-century cultural context and contemporary queer discourse, the project shows how Tchaikovsky’s musical choices could be interpreted as code of his emotionality and experiences as a queer person. Through historical context, letters, and analyses of selected songs, performers can draw upon layered meanings in choices of phrasing, acting, and staging. Ultimately, this performer’s guide seeks to highlight Tchaikovsky’s arts songs …

Exploring Predictors Of Lgbt-Affirming Counseling Self-Efficacy Among Counselors And Counselors In Training, Mary Agnes Louise Thompson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
There is a growing need for counselors and counselors-in-training to provide affirming services competently and confidently to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) clients. Previous research has demonstrated that factors such as personal attitudes, religious commitment, and exposure to LGBT individuals influence counselors’ perceived competence in this area. However, little is known about how these variables interact to shape LGBT-affirming counseling self-efficacy, a critical component of effective and ethical practice. The present study investigated predictors of LGBT-affirming counseling self-efficacy among a sample of 131 professional counselors and counselors-in-training. Specifically, the study examined the direct effects of gender, religious commitment, and …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Astronomers’ pursuit of imaging light from increasingly faint and distant objects in the expanse of space necessitates continuous improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of camera technology. Recent advancements in solid-state detector technologies have enabled the determination of photon number, including single-photon events, enabling observations at the fundamental limits of physics. We present an evaluation of three next-generation silicon-based detectors capable of photon-counting with deep-sub-electron input-referred read noise: the electron-multiplying charge-coupled device (EMCCD), the single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD), and the CMOS quanta image sensor (QIS). The EMCCD is built using a CCD sensor design that additionally employs repeated impact ionization to …

The Odds Don’T Lie: Mathematical Reasoning And Societal Ignorance In Don’T Look Up, Nysa Vedwan, Shane Carey
LASER Journal
In Adam McKay’s 2021 satirical sci-fi movie Don’t Look Up, two astronomers discover a comet heading directly toward Earth. Despite overwhelming evidence and near-certainty of global extinction, their warnings are ignored and ridiculed. This paper discusses the mathematical and scientific foundations of the movie’s social and political reception, and specifically focuses on orbital prediction and probabilistic modeling as they relate to public understanding of risk. This paper shows how data is often undermined by political and social dynamics, by connecting the fictional events of the movie with real-world crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate emergency. In Don’t Look …

A Collective Journey: Supporting Our Nonbinary Students, April Vazquez
A Collective Journey: Supporting Our Nonbinary Students, April Vazquez
i.e.: inquiry in education
For nonbinary young people, school is often a hostile environment. However, as educators, we can support and affirm diverse gender identities in the classroom, validating students who identify outside the binary and fostering their classmates’ empathy and understanding. A key component of culturally relevant pedagogy is literary representation. By offering books featuring authentic, humanizing depictions of nonbinary characters, we can provide not only mirrors and windows for our students but also telescopes by which something far away—a world free of cisnormative gender prejudice—seems closer and more achievable.

When sound reaches human ears, sound waves do not arrive at each ear at the same time. Rather, depending on the direction of the sound source, sound waves take different paths to each ear. These paths will likely have different lengths, so the sound waves will reach the closest ear first and the farthest ear shortly after. The exact paths sound waves take to reach a person’s ears are dictated by the person’s head and ear anatomy. To reproduce sounds accurately for immersive experiences, these anatomical differences, which are scientifically modeled by Head-Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs), must be accounted for. …

Advertising Targeting Based On Multi-Modal Detection Of Organic Brand Presence, Basel Hijazi, Nicolas Marchal
Defensive Publications Series
A potential difficulty in digital advertising can be measuring or capitalizing on the organic exposure of physical brand sponsorships within online media content, as some systems might not analyze visual and audio content for brand presence. A multi-modal analysis engine can be used to process media content. This engine can, for example, employ computer vision to identify visual brand indicators, such as logos and products, and use automatic speech recognition and natural language processing to detect spoken brand mentions in an audio track. Detected instances of brand presence can then be converted into actionable advertising targeting criteria. Such criteria can …
