Navigating Structure, Function, And Stability: Bridging Immunotherapy And Protein Engineering In The Era Of Machine Learning, Christopher J. Haynie
Theses and Dissertations
The immune system is a remarkably adaptive network, yet it often fails to function optimally due to evasion strategies of pathogens or mutated cells. Many of these evasion strategies involve alterations in protein expression and function. Protein design is an area of computational biology with potential applications in improving protein function and therapeutic protein engineering. This thesis explores methods to enhance immune function and protein design across multiple scales, from molecular engineering of antibody fragments and chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) to cellular immune responses, and computational approaches for protein structure optimization. We characterize Thymidine Kinase 1-specific single-chain antibodies, highlighting both …

The Underrepresentation Of African American Officers In A Large Midwestern Correctional System, Julius Oben Eyong
The Underrepresentation Of African American Officers In A Large Midwestern Correctional System, Julius Oben Eyong
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The correctional population in the United States remains high despite the implementation of various measures to reduce crime and recidivism. The primary goal of correctional establishments is to reduce recidivism and crime through effective rehabilitation programs. The role of the correctional officer is crucial in the rehabilitation process because they are the heartbeat of a prison. However, low staffing levels have a negative impact on the role of corrections officers. There is a gap in the relevant literature on the low staffing levels of African American correctional officers. This qualitative research, through the phenomenological approach, focused on the correctional culture …

Hide And Seek: Offshore Financial Centers And Targeted Sanctions, Menevis Cilizogula, Chelsea Estancona
Faculty Publications
The movement of capital across borders has never been easier, as evidenced by the recent proliferation of offshore financial services. But these services are a double-edged sword: while boosting economic efficiency, they can also facilitate illicit financial activity. In this paper, we discuss the symbiotic relationship between financial liberalization and the pursuit of financial anonymity by secrecy-seeking actors. We examine a hide-and-seek dynamic between governments increasing monitoring of international finance and actors seeking anonymity via offshore financial centers. Under what conditions can international financial monitoring have the unintended consequence of increasing the use of poorly regulated and opaque offshore financial …

Parents’ Sustained Recovery From Substance Use During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Amanda Antis
Parents’ Sustained Recovery From Substance Use During The Coronavirus Pandemic, Amanda Antis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Parents in recovery from substance abuse rely on social support and programs to maintain their sobriety consistently. However, specific programs crucial for their social and mental well-being, such as most 12-step groups and recovery centers, were shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite some research on the impact of substance abuse during the pandemic, little attention has been given to sustained recovery. Therefore, the purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to explore how parents maintained recovery from substance use amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Schlossberg’s transition process model served as the theoretical framework for this study. Semistructured interviews with nine …

Understanding The Lived Experience Of Mental Health Following An Alpha-Gal Syndrome Diagnosis: A Phenomenological Study Grounded In Maslow’S Hierarchy Of Needs, Heather L. Hargis
Understanding The Lived Experience Of Mental Health Following An Alpha-Gal Syndrome Diagnosis: A Phenomenological Study Grounded In Maslow’S Hierarchy Of Needs, Heather L. Hargis
Dissertations
Alpha-gal syndrome is a tick-borne food allergy that triggers delayed allergic reactions to mammalian products and profoundly alters daily life. While growing research examines the physiological aspects of alpha-gal syndrome, little is known about its psychological impact. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of individuals with alpha-gal syndrome to understand how the condition influences mental health through the lens of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Data was collected through semi-structured virtual interviews with adults medically diagnosed with alpha-gal syndrome. Thematic analysis revealed significant challenges in meeting Maslow’s lower-tier needs—physiological, safety, and love/belonging—due to dietary restrictions, medical uncertainty, social isolation, and …
Strategic Management And Profit Optimization In Major League Baseball: A Framework For Sustainable Franchise Success, Cole Bourne
Strategic Management And Profit Optimization In Major League Baseball: A Framework For Sustainable Franchise Success, Cole Bourne
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines the strategic, economic, and operational forces that drive profitability in Major League Baseball (MLB), positioning franchises not merely as sports teams but as complex, multi-revenue businesses. As the league evolves into a multi-billion-dollar industry shaped by expanding media rights, rising player salaries, and increasing market disparities, financial sustainability requires a blend of data-driven decision-making and modern business strategy. Through analysis of revenue streams, cost structures, market dynamics, and case studies, this work identifies the key levers that differentiate successful franchises from struggling ones.
The study outlines how media contracts—both national and local—serve as the backbone of MLB …

Introduction: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that impairs daily functioning following exposure to trauma. Recent studies identify nurses are at a particularly high risk of developing PTSD (Fattori et al., 2023; Hernández Bojorge et al., 2024; Negarandeh et al., 2023). While this vulnerability was underscored during the COVID-19 pandemic, prior research indicates that PTSD is a longstanding concern within the profession (Battles, 2007; Czaja et al., 2012). Individuals with PTSD endorse chronic symptoms in five clusters: reexperiencing, avoidance, negative alterations in cognition and mood, and hyperarousal (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Understanding which PTSD domains are associated …
