Hauntological Speculation Device: Designing Lost Futures With Design Students And Generative Ai To Explore Alternative Socio-Technological Scenarios, Pedro Álvarez, José Tomás Labbé Dec 2025

Hauntological Speculation Device: Designing Lost Futures With Design Students And Generative Ai To Explore Alternative Socio-Technological Scenarios, Pedro Álvarez, José Tomás Labbé

IASDR Conference Series

This paper explores haunt ological speculation as an innovative approach to Speculative Design in undergraduate design education. While Speculative Design methodologies have gained prominence in design curricula, they often struggle to imagine future scenarios beyond apocalyptic narratives, leading to a form of "imaginative paralysis." To address this challenge, we integrate "hauntology" into Design epi stem ologies. Hauntology expands ontological frameworks by incorporating "the presence of absences"—events that could have occurred but did not materialize—as factors shaping the present, thereby broadening possibilities for imagining and designing futures beyond dominant contemporary logics. We present two case studies of "haunt ological speculation exercises" …

Designing A Distractor As A Reset Mechanism In Virtual Reality: Exploring User Awareness In Redirected Walking, I Nyoman Natanael, Chien-Hsu Chen, Wei-Ting Lu

IASDR Conference Series

The Redirected Walking (RDW) technique manipulates users' spatial perception, allowing them to walk within a Virtual Environment (VE) larger than the available physical tracking space. The principle of the RDW technique is to manipulate the rotation, translation, and curvature gain ratios on the VE so that users perceive walking straight in the VE even while following a curved path in the physical space. A reset mechanism is needed when the user reaches the edge of the tracking space area to continue walking in the Physical Environment (PE) area without hitting a wall or exiting the tracking space area. A reset …

Reactivating The Unseen And Unheard: Posthuman Playfulness As Cultural Agency In Urban Ecologies, Yuying Jiang

IASDR Conference Series

With the development of More-than-Human-Centered Design theory, culture has gradually been recognized as an active non-human agent in urban public spaces, attracting increasing attention in the field of design research. However, in the actual planning and operation of urban spaces, posthuman cultural elements—such as cultural memory, historical narratives, and aesthetic experience—are often marginalized. Consequently, the functions of space have become increasingly shaped by mainstream social norms and efficiency-oriented logic, further reinforcing rigid divisions between age, behavior, and use. For example, in urban playgrounds, adults are often excluded and deprived of the right to emotional expression and cultural participation in public …

Airing Data Through Materiality: A Situated Design Approach To Data Physicalization, Annemarie Piscaer, Kristof Vrancken, Sandy Claes, Michel Van Dartel, Michel Van Dartel

IASDR Conference Series

Air pollution is both largely invisible and extensively monitored, making it a data-intensive issue that presents significant challenges for public engagement. Its abstract and often intangible nature makes it difficult for people to relate to or understand. Designers can play a role by transforming abstract (air pollution) data into tangible, context-sensitive artifacts—a practice known as data physicalization. This paper introduces “airing” as a design approach to situated data physicalization. Rather than relying on detached design approaches, airing argues for situated, real-world engagement with data. Airing data through materiality highlights the active role of materials in embedding data within the physical …
