Assessing Predoctoral Dental Student Interest In Nutrition Education: A Study Across Two Dental Schools, Nadine M. Tassabehji, Xiaoyuan Han, Parvati Iyer Dr., Michelle Brady, Matthew Finkelman, Shafa Nathani, Anna Garrison, Annie Han

Pacific Journal of Health

The mouth is a mirror of overall health. Dentists have a vital role in the diagnosis of oral diseases, prevention, for health promotion. The purposes of our exploratory study were to investigate dental students’ attitudes and perceptions regarding nutrition education and to propose a curriculum checklist for integrating nutrition content into dental curricula.

An optional exploratory survey was distributed at two North American urban dental schools to 351 students, to compare student perspectives regarding implementation of nutrition education. The results were analyzed as a step to improve nutrition education in dental curricula. A validated stepwise checklist was developed to guide …

Increasing Participation Through Online Focus Groups With Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Emily L. Cary, Chris A. Taylor, Susan Havercamp, Andrea Witwer

Developmental Disabilities Network Journal

The aim of this study was to develop and describe methods on how to conduct virtual focus groups with adults with intellectual disability. Using a community-engaged research approach, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities helped develop virtual focus group methods. We report on the implementation of these methods through an illustrative application of applying these adaptations to virtual focus groups with 13 adults with intellectual disability in a study assessing their perspectives on mental health therapy.

This work resulted in several adaptations that can enhance inclusivity of focus group research to individuals with intellectual disability. Adaptions broadly included: involving guardians …

Applying Total Quality Management And Auditor Size Theories To Audit Quality: Evidence From Tanzanian Auditing Firms, Freddy Chaula, Henry Zeno Chalu, Paul Ambege Jan 2026

Applying Total Quality Management And Auditor Size Theories To Audit Quality: Evidence From Tanzanian Auditing Firms, Freddy Chaula, Henry Zeno Chalu, Paul Ambege

Business Management Review

Amid mixed global findings on the determinants of audit quality, particularly in emerging markets, the role of engagement team competence and audit firm size remains underexplored. This study investigates the relationship between engagement team competence, audit firm size, and audit quality in Tanzanian auditing firms. The hypotheses were tested using PLS-SEM based on data obtained from a cross-sectional survey of 147 Tanzanian audit partners. Audit firm size (β = 0.309, p < 0.01) and engagement team competence (β = 0.567, p < 0.01) were found to have significant positive effects on audit quality. These results suggest that audit quality is significantly enhanced by audit firm size and engagement team competence, thus supporting total quality management and auditor size theories. These findings highlight the need for regulators to strengthen auditor competence and to support the growth of small auditing firms, thereby enhancing their capacity, resources, and the overall audit quality. For auditing firms, the findings underscore the need to develop engagement team competence through initiatives such as professional training, mentoring, and knowledge-sharing programs. Additionally, firms should expand their capacity to strengthen audit quality. While focused on the Tanzanian context, the findings offer broader insights for improving audit quality in developing economies.

Zonation-Dependent Distribution Of Microplastic Occurrence In Patella Caerulea From Mersin Coast, Türkiye, Ezgi̇ Deği̇rmenci̇, Nuray Çi̇ftçi̇, Sedat Gündoğdu, Deni̇z Ayas Jan 2026

Zonation-Dependent Distribution Of Microplastic Occurrence In Patella Caerulea From Mersin Coast, Türkiye, Ezgi̇ Deği̇rmenci̇, Nuray Çi̇ftçi̇, Sedat Gündoğdu, Deni̇z Ayas

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Increasing plastic pollution has become a critical environmental issue, leading to  challenges in management. Specifically, microplastics (MPs) are of particular concern  because they can persist in aquatic ecosystems and adversely affect marine  organisms. The objective of this study was to assess the occurrence of MPs  in the soft tissues of Patella caerulea (Linnaeus, 1758) collected from the Mersin  Viranşehir coastal area. As no specimens were found in the supralittoral zone, the  decision was taken to conduct sampling only in the mediolittoral and infralittoral  zones. The total sampling area was 24 m2 divided into three 4-m2 plots in each zone.  A …

Blinking Without Eyelids: First Video-Documented Evidence Of A Blink-Like Reflex In Ophisops Elegans (Reptilia: Lacertidae), Turan Meri̇ç Çelebi̇, Yusuf Çeli̇kaği, Tuana Kinay, Arda Cem Kuyucu, Muammer Kurnaz, Mehmet Kürşat Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Eyelids play a crucial role in protecting the eyes of vertebrates; however, certain  reptile species, such as Ophisops elegans, completely lack movable eyelids. In this  study, we present the first video-documented evidence of a blink-like reflex in O.  elegans, captured through endoscopic field observations and corroborated by laboratory video analysis. The observed movement consisted of a brief convex  deformation of the ocular surface, lasting approximately 0.3 s and resembling a blink  despite the presence of a fixed transparent brille. This behavior was observed once in  the field and twice under controlled laboratory conditions. We propose that O.  elegans may employ …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Since its introduction into Serbian watercourses, the invasive Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782) (Prussian carp) has spread rapidly. This paper provides an up-to-date overview of the sex ratio, age structure, and growth parameters in Serbian  populations of this fish and describes how growth varies in two contrasting  ecosystems: lotic and lentic. A total of 133 individuals were sampled. The individuals  from lentic habitats were longer on average, with no significant differences in average  weight or age between the two ecosystem types. There was a difference in  the sex ratio between the ecosystems, as indicated by a higher proportion of males in …

In What Ways Do Political Factors And Relations Of Power Interfere With The Legal Protection Of Human Rights In Cameroon?, Nelson Agbor Jan 2026

In What Ways Do Political Factors And Relations Of Power Interfere With The Legal Protection Of Human Rights In Cameroon?, Nelson Agbor

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

ABSTRACTTitle: In what ways do political factors and relations of power interfere with the legal protection of human rights in Cameroon? In November 2016, a socio-political crisis erupted in the Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon, mainly due to the marginalisation of English-speaking populations in these two regions. This crisis has since metamorphosed into an armed conflict between government forces and armed separatist groups operating in these warring regions. The conflict has resulted in severe human rights abuses committed both by the government forces and armed separatist groups operating in these regions. The conflict, also known as the Anglophone crisis, began …

An Antioxidant Cocktail Of Tert-Butylhydroquinone And A Manganese Porphyrin Induces Toxic Levels Of Oxidative Stress In Cancer Cells, Sandra Tamarin, Hannah Jung, Joseph Lamorte, Laura Biesterveld, Gabriel Piñero, Grace Turchetta, Molly Myers, Rebecca Oberley-Deegan, Aimee Eggler

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Despite significant advancement in cancer treatments, therapies with minimal toxicity to healthy cells are still limited. One targetable weakness of cancer cells is their sensitivity to oxidative stress. We find that the combination of two antioxidants—the common food additive tert-butylhydroquinone (tBHQ) and a manganese porphyrin in clinical trials, MnTnBuOE-2-PyP5+ (MnBuOE)—increases oxidative stress and causes apoptotic death in several cancer cell lines, but not in mouse primary fibroblasts. Investigating the mechanism of cell death, MnBuOE is observed to catalyze the oxidation of tBHQ, producing the electrophilic quinone tert-butylquinone (tBQ). A critical role for tBQ and its electrophilic character was revealed with …

Introduction:

Rates of fatal overdose due to opioid and substance use in Richmond, Virginia increased from 44.6 in 2018 to 129.5 per 100,000 city residents in 2023. The underlying contexts surrounding the increase in substance use and overdoses in Richmond, Virginia remains poorly understood.

Methods:

Using community based participatory research principles (CBPR), a series of “community conversations” with neighborhood residents were conducted between May–December 2023. These events included educational information, resource connection, and facilitated qualitative focus group discussion on factors contributing to substance use and overdose, as well as resource needs of people engaged in substance use. Participants also completed …

Taking Pride In Vegan Consumption: A Construal Level Theory Account Of Ad Message Appeal And Future Self Connectedness, Mona Safizadeh, Atefeh Yazdanparast, Reto Felix Jan 2026

Taking Pride In Vegan Consumption: A Construal Level Theory Account Of Ad Message Appeal And Future Self Connectedness, Mona Safizadeh, Atefeh Yazdanparast, Reto Felix

Marketing Faculty Publications

Despite growing interest in vegan products, research examining the motivations, underlying psychological processes, and boundary conditions that drive consumer preference for vegan products remains limited. Drawing on theories of temporal self and appraisal theory, we find that an immediate message appeal (e.g., animal welfare), as compared to a future outcome message appeal (e.g., environmental benefits), leads to higher preference for vegan products. Anticipated consumption pride, but not guilt, mediates this relationship, highlighting the role of positive emotions in shaping ethical behavior. Furthermore, we examine how aligning the temporal orientation of advertising message appeals with individuals' construal mindsets, as primed by …

Habitat Diversity Or Altitudinal Gradient? Which Factor Better Explains Ground Beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Biodiversity? A Case Study From Davraz Mountain (Isparta, Türkiye), Ebru Ceren Fi̇dan, Ali̇ Gök Jan 2026

Habitat Diversity Or Altitudinal Gradient? Which Factor Better Explains Ground Beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Biodiversity? A Case Study From Davraz Mountain (Isparta, Türkiye), Ebru Ceren Fi̇dan, Ali̇ Gök

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Ground beetle (Carabidae) species diversity and spatial distribution were surveyed  across five habitat types along an elevational gradient on Davraz Mountain, a  biogeographical transition area in southwestern Türkiye. The analyses showed that  habitat heterogeneity—particularly soil moisture and texture—exerts a stronger  influence on carabid diversity than elevation. Sørensen’s and Jaccard similarity  indices showed strong faunal overlap between some sampling areas, while  multivariate principal components and canonical correspondence analyses verified  distinct environmental gradients influencing community structure. Diversity indices  indicated varying levels of species richness and evenness across sampling areas.  The data highlight the importance of fine-scaled habitat features in driving ground  beetle …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The common sunbleak (Leucaspius delineatus) is an invasive fish found in Siberian  water bodies, the trophic interactions and impact on local ecosystems of which  remain poorly understood. Traditional diet analyses are limited by the mechanical  damage to the prey. For the present study, therefore, we employed DNA  metabarcoding of the cytochrome c oxidase I (cox1) gene to analyze the digestive  tract contents of the common sunbleak obtained from Irkutsk Reservoir. Our analysis  revealed 53 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), with sequences of amphibiotic  insects (58.66%) and fish (34.10%) being the most prevalent. A significant proportion  of the fish DNA, including sequences …

Disruptive Religion And Ethical Opposition: The Force Of Moral Authority In Indonesia’S Democratic Consolidation, Savran Billahi, Idris Thaha, Suryani Suryani, Mohammad Ezha Fachriza

Jurnal Wacana Politik

This article argues that democratic consolidation in Indonesia cannot be explained solely through the performance of formal institutions. By foregrounding ethical opposition as a missing variable in dominant consolidation theories, it shows that democracy has also been sustained by a normative infrastructure that legitimizes critique beyond institutional arenas. Based on qualitative historical analysis of Abdurrahman Wahid’s and Ahmad Syafii Maarif’s oppositional practices under the New Order and in the post-Reformasi period, the article finds that moral authority enabled non-institutional opposition to constrain state power, normalize dissent, and protect democratic quality. While both figures articulated a corrective and non-subversive mode of …

Balls, Boots, And Bats: Indo-Fijian Women Reimagining Sport, Masculinity, And Identity In The Global South, Rohini Balram

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

In Fiji, physicality and hegemonic masculinity are largely defined by rugby and the military, institutions dominated by Indigenous Fijian men, who are predominantly Christian, often marginalising other races, genders, religions, and sports. While research in the Global South has examined intersections of race and gender, little is known about how masculinity is understood across different sports, sporting icons, and contexts—particularly from the perspective of South Asian migrant women in Oceania with hybrid identities. This paper investigates how young Indo-Fijian women negotiate masculinity, identity, and agency through sport, Bollywood cinema, social media, and cultural narratives. Drawing on a year-long, multi-method participatory …

Stressors And Challenges Faced By Mexican American Caregivers Of Family Members With Alzheimer’S Disease, Romeo Escobar, Denise Longoria, John M. Gonzalez, Nelda Rodriguez Jan 2026

Stressors And Challenges Faced By Mexican American Caregivers Of Family Members With Alzheimer’S Disease, Romeo Escobar, Denise Longoria, John M. Gonzalez, Nelda Rodriguez

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

Mexican American caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease face unique stressors and challenges, which may be influenced by cultural, socioeconomic, and systemic factors. This population often assumes caregiving responsibilities based on strong cultural values of familismo which emphasizes family duty and collective care. However, this commitment can lead to increased emotional strain, mental health concerns, financial and physical strain, particularly when caregivers have limited access to healthcare resources, financial support, or respite. Language barriers and a lack of culturally competent healthcare services can further exacerbate stress, making it difficult to navigate the complex healthcare system. The purpose of this study …

Granite Staters Support Obamacare Subsidies, Disapprove Of Trump & Congress's Handling Of Health Care 1/26/2026, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Just over half of New Hampshire residents support extending the recently expired Obamacare subsidies and nearly half of residents would support instituting a national "single-payer" health care system. Granite Staters are divided along partisan lines on whether to expand or repeal Obamacare. Most Granite Staters say that medical costs have increased in the past year and nearly one-third say someone in their household has postponed getting health care due to cost. A majority disapprove of President Trump's handling of healthcare and Granite Staters are even more negative about the performance of Congress on the issue.

Reprioritizing International Patent Law, John R. Thomas Jan 2026

Reprioritizing International Patent Law, John R. Thomas

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Over the past half-century, rapid technological change and globalization have reshaped innovation and intellectual property, yet the foundational international agreements anchoring the global patent system have remained essentially unchanged. The drafters of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) viewed these agreements as dynamic instruments that, through procedural coordination, would rationalize international patent administration. The Paris Convention has resisted reform for decades, however, while the PCT has failed to achieve its goals of reducing examination workloads and fostering worksharing among national patent offices. It now exacerbates the very inefficiencies it sought to …
