Reliability And Validity Evidence For An Arabic- Version Of Mathematics Self-Efficacy And Anxiety Questionnaire (Mseaq) Among University Students In Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Abdullah Almohaimeed Jan 2023

Reliability And Validity Evidence For An Arabic- Version Of Mathematics Self-Efficacy And Anxiety Questionnaire (Mseaq) Among University Students In Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Abdullah Almohaimeed

Wayne State University Dissertations

In Saudi Arabia, mathematics is an essential subject for all freshmen except students majoring in medical sciences. The struggle of students in mathematics is one of the most common issues in the last ten years (Khoshaim, 2015). According to Higbee and Thomas (1999), mathematics self-efficacy, along with other effective characteristics such as test anxiety and perceived usefulness of mathematics, influenced students' mathematical achievements. Mathematics self-efficacy refers to individuals’ confidence or perceptions regarding their mathematics ability. Given the possible predictive power of Mathematics self-efficacy on students' mathematic performance, a reliable and valid mathematic self-efficacy measure appropriate for Arabic-speaking Saudi students is …

Synthesis And Reactivity Of Xanthene-Based Heterobimetallic Systems For Co Oxidation, Umesh Kaluarachchige Don Jan 2023

Synthesis And Reactivity Of Xanthene-Based Heterobimetallic Systems For Co Oxidation, Umesh Kaluarachchige Don

Wayne State University Dissertations

Nature provides a useful guideline for the design of an efficient earth-abundant catalyst for CO oxidation that relies on bimodal heterobimetallic cooperativity. Molybdenum-copper carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (Mo-Cu CODH) is an enzyme of the xanthine oxidoreductase family that catalyzes reversible oxidation of CO; it is inhibited by cyanide CN- and inserts isocyanide CNR between Cu and O/S. The active site contains molybdenum(VI) in a square pyramidal configuration with apical oxo and basal dithiolene, oxo, and sulfide ligands. The two-coordinate Cu(I) is coordinated by cysteinate and Mo-sulfide to form Mo-S-Cu bridge. While several groups have reported structural models of the active site of …

Can Designing For Mars Stimulate Our Thinking About Designing More Sustainably For Earth?, Lucy Berthoud, James Norman, Ella Good, Nicola Kent Jan 2023

Can Designing For Mars Stimulate Our Thinking About Designing More Sustainably For Earth?, Lucy Berthoud, James Norman, Ella Good, Nicola Kent

Practice Papers

This work describes the use of an arts-based project to stimulate creative thinking about design and sustainability for engineering students of all disciplines and years. ‘Building a Martian House’ was a public art project where a house designed for Mars was built in the centre of the city of Bristol, UK. It was conceived by artists, designed by the public, architects and engineers and built by construction companies. In this work, a workshop for students was developed and run based on this art project. Its aim was to use the challenge of designing for Mars as a provocation to thinking …

Problem Solving Skills Deconstructed And Implemented In An Adaptive Learning Tool, Arne Duyver, Jozefien De Keyzer, Els Wieers, Kris Henrioulle, Kris Aerts Jan 2023

Problem Solving Skills Deconstructed And Implemented In An Adaptive Learning Tool, Arne Duyver, Jozefien De Keyzer, Els Wieers, Kris Henrioulle, Kris Aerts

Practice Papers

The development of problem-solving skills is an important subject in engineering curricula. Helping novice students develop such skills can be challenging because problem solving is a complex skill in the sense that it is accompanied with an internal thinking process that many experts are even unaware of doing. From a combination of literature and a thinking-aloud exercise with the entire teaching team, a scheme with building blocks and strategies that are commonly used by engineers was constructed. In addition to commonly named steps such as Identify/Define, Plan/Choose, Carry Out/Do and Look back/Inspect the scheme refines the first step into multiple …

Marxian Social History Vs New Economic History: The “Williams Thesis” And The Debate On Slavery’S Relationship With The British Industrial Revolution, Jennifer Agel Jan 2023

Marxian Social History Vs New Economic History: The “Williams Thesis” And The Debate On Slavery’S Relationship With The British Industrial Revolution, Jennifer Agel

The Graduate Review

In 1944, the publication of Eric Williams’ thesis Capitalism and Slavery sparked a historiographical debate that continues to rage to this day. In particular, his work’s foundational premise, in which he argues that the eighteenth-century slave plantation system of the Caribbean laid the economic foundations of the British industrial revolution in the nineteenth, has been hotly contested by historians since the year of its publication. Invariably, historical interpretations of the “Williams Thesis,” as it came to be known, are largely informed by the political and social leanings of the scholars who tackle the issue. In this article, I argue that …

Higher Spanier Groups, Johnny Aceti Jan 2023

Higher Spanier Groups, Johnny Aceti

West Chester University Master’s Theses

When non-trivial local structures are present in a topological space X, a common ap- proach to characterizing the isomorphism type of the n-th homotopy group πn(X, x0) is to consider the image of πn(X, x0) in the n-th ˇCech homotopy group ˇπn(X, x0) under the canonical homomorphism Ψn : πn(X, x0) → ˇπn(X, x0). The subgroup ker Ψn is the obstruc- tion to this tactic as it consists of precisely those elements of πn(X, x0), which cannont be detected by polyhedral approximations to X. In this paper we present a definition of higher dimensional analouges of Thick Spanier groups use …

Oxbridge And Core Curricula: Continuing Conversations With The Past In Honors Colleges, Christopher A. Snyder Jan 2023

Oxbridge And Core Curricula: Continuing Conversations With The Past In Honors Colleges, Christopher A. Snyder

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

The American honors college, as it exists in the twenty-first century, is idiosyncratic and an amalgam of centuries old European traditions in higher education with pedagogies and practices that have emerged only since about the 1980s and are particular to America. These disparate influences coexist—sometimes uneasily—in American universities, and yet American honors colleges have continued to have conversations with the past in order to seek wisdom for dealing with contemporary issues such as the democratization of higher education, social justice and diversity, the use of instructional technology, and the controversy between vocational training and liberal learning. Because, unlike departments, an …

Honors Liberal Arts For The 21st Century, John Carrell, Aliza S. Wong, Chad Cain, Carrie J. Preston, Muhammad H. Zaman

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

We argue that honors colleges can deploy the power of the liberal arts to emphasize diversity, equity, global citizenship, ethical leadership, and empowerment by combining liberal arts and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and medicine) fields in interdisciplinary approaches to global challenges, from climate change to the pandemic to forced displacement. As the honors colleges at Texas Tech and Boston University work to be at the forefront of pedagogical and curricular innovation, the twenty-first century has presented us with a student and faculty community becoming increasingly aware of historical, racial, gendered, and socioeconomic disparities, which were further exacerbated by the COVID …

Honors Colleges, Transdisciplinary Education, And Global Challenges, Paul Knox, Paul Heilker Jan 2023

Honors Colleges, Transdisciplinary Education, And Global Challenges, Paul Knox, Paul Heilker

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

The authors contend that the most significant comparative advantage of honors colleges is the combination of gifted and motivated students from every academic discipline and interdisciplinary curricula that train students to integrate diverse perspectives. The authors discuss how to harness this advantage to provide a truly transdisciplinary education through collaborative, project-based learning, both on campus and beyond. They assert that honors colleges are in a unique position to circumvent the siloed structures of academia by convening multidisciplinary groups of students guided by faculty from a wide range of disciplines. Doing so can help reimagine undergraduate education to address urgent and …

An Adaptive Algorithm For `The Secretary Problem': Alternate Proof Of The Divergence Of A Maximizer Sequence, Andrew Benfante, Xiang Xu Jan 2023

An Adaptive Algorithm For `The Secretary Problem': Alternate Proof Of The Divergence Of A Maximizer Sequence, Andrew Benfante, Xiang Xu

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper presents an alternate proof of the divergence of the unique maximizer sequence {𝑥∗ 𝑛} of a function sequence {𝐹𝑛(𝑥)} that is derived from an adaptive algorithm based on the now classic optimal stopping problem, known by many names but here ‘the secretary problem’. The alternate proof uses a result established by Nguyen, Xu, and Zhao (n.d.) regarding the uniqueness of maximizer points of a generalized function sequence {𝑆𝜇,𝜎 𝑛 } and relies on the strict monotonicity of 𝐹𝑛(𝑥) as 𝑛 increases in order to show divergence of {𝑥∗ 𝑛}. Towards this, limits of the exponentiated Gaussian CDF are …

Restricting Scientific Legitimacy In The Age Of Biotechnology?, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2023

Restricting Scientific Legitimacy In The Age Of Biotechnology?, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

In the Age of Biotechnology, there is no more pressing question than whether a philosophy of science exists and translates into a notion that—with or without qualification—the sovereignty of science is central to the advancement of society and should be totally emancipated from concurrence or oversight by society at large. Far too many Americans choose neither to be “informed” nor to accept the responsibilities of citizenship to participate fully in a deliberative democracy—they have chosen instead to exercise their “right” to remain ignorant. Consequently, science reigns without restraint or even review. The scientific community has a coordinated responsibility to society, …

Short Circuiting The Administrative Judiciary: A Response To Linda Jellum, Marshall J. Breger Jan 2023

Short Circuiting The Administrative Judiciary: A Response To Linda Jellum, Marshall J. Breger

Scholarly Articles

Linda Jellum provides a powerful analysis of the status of the exhaustion process for the SEC administrative judiciary and more broadly of the entire administrative judiciary. Many of her arguments are telling and on point. I disagree with a number of her technical and statutory arguments, and even more so the consequences of her analysis for the administrative state as we know it.

Jellum's argument is that Congress did not intend to preclude district courts from hearing constitutional challenges to SEC adjudications because agency ALJs are not the right adjudicators to hear challenges to the constitutionality of their own operations.

Utilizing Machine Learning Algorithm In Predicting The Power Conversion Efficiency Limit Of A Monolithically Perovskites/Silicon Tandem Structure, Moustafa Ganoub, Omar Elsaban, Sameh O. Abdellatif Dr, Khaled Kirah, Hani Ghali Jan 2023

Utilizing Machine Learning Algorithm In Predicting The Power Conversion Efficiency Limit Of A Monolithically Perovskites/Silicon Tandem Structure, Moustafa Ganoub, Omar Elsaban, Sameh O. Abdellatif Dr, Khaled Kirah, Hani Ghali

Electrical Engineering

Tandem structures have been introduced to the photovoltaics (PV) market to boost power conversion efficiency (PCE). Single-junction cells’ PCE, either in a homojunction or heterojunction format, are clipped to a theoretical limit associated with the absorbing material bandgap. Scaling up the single-junction cells to a multi-junction tandem structure penetrates such limits. One of the promising tandem structures is the perovskite over silicon topology. Si junction is utilized as a counter bare cell with perovskites layer above, under applying the bandgap engineering aspects. Herein, we adopt BaTiO3/CsPbCl3/MAPbBr3/CH3NH3PbI3/c-Si tandem structure to be investigated. In tandem PVs, various input parameters can be tuned …

Are Chatgpt And Other Similar Systems The Modern Lernaean Hydras Of Ai?, Dimitrios Ioannidis, Esq., Dr. Jeremy Kepner, Dr. Andrew Bowne, Lt. Col., Usaf, Harriet S. Bryant

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

The rise of Generative Artificial Intelligence systems (“AI systems”) has created unprecedented social engagement. AI code generation systems provide responses (output) to questions or requests by accessing the vast library of open-source code created by developers over the past few decades. However, they do so by allegedly stealing the open-source code stored in virtual libraries, known as repositories. This Article focuses on how this happens and whether there is a solution that protects innovation and avoids years of litigation. We also touch upon the array of issues raised by the relationship between AI and copyright. Looking ahead, we propose the …

Polytech To Polytek: Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Indigenous Science, And The Future Forward Polytechnic University, Cutcha Risling Baldy, Kaitlin P. Reed, Kayla Begay

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

It is clear from Cal Poly Humboldt’s Polytechnic Prospectus that Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Indigenous communities are key parts of what elevates Humboldt’s development of a polytechnic university for the next century. The prospectus demonstrates Humboldt's proposed framework for a different comprehensive polytechnic "will also be informed by Indigenous communities and ways of knowing, as many Native peoples have lived sustainably in their places since time immemorial” (19). There are many considerations when engaging with TEK, especially around sustainable use. It is also important that engagement with TEK and Indigenous science not only center knowledge sharing, but also how …

Fostering Socio-Ecological Resilience To Wildfire By Interconnecting Knowledge Systems At Cal Poly Humboldt, Jeffrey M. Kane, Erin Kelly, Benjamin Graham, David Greene

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

The wildfire-related challenges of Northern California and many other regions in the western United States are daunting in scope and magnitude. Ecologically and culturally salient solutions that limit the negative impacts of wildfire and promote resilience of human and ecological systems will require newer approaches. Through Cal Poly Humboldt and the Fire Resilience Institute, there is greater emphasis on the interconnection of knowledge systems across education, training, research, and management. Here we highlight several on-going efforts that seek to enhance the fire resilience workforce, promote socio-ecological resilience through interdisciplinary projects, and inform management through monitoring and research projects that intentionally …

Broadening Views Of Mathematical Creativity: Inclusion Of The Undergraduate Student Perspective, Emily Cilli-Turner, V. Rani Satyam, Miloš Savić, Gail Tang, Houssein El Turkey, Gulden Karakok Jan 2023

Broadening Views Of Mathematical Creativity: Inclusion Of The Undergraduate Student Perspective, Emily Cilli-Turner, V. Rani Satyam, Miloš Savić, Gail Tang, Houssein El Turkey, Gulden Karakok

Mathematics: Faculty Scholarship

Numerous conceptions of creativity exist in the literature; yet these are commonly based on the perspectives of professional mathematicians. Including students’ perspectives in creativity is crucial not only for a more robust picture of what it means to be creative but also to combat damaging dominant narratives about who can be creative. We examined calculus students’ views of mathematical creativity, a group not often considered in the creativity literature, to broaden future considerations of creativity. Interviews with N=55 calculus students across various institutions were conducted. Results show six emergent wide-ranging themes of these students’ creativity views: actions and attitudes, application, …

The Irony Of Accountability: How A Performance-Inducing Policy Reduces Motivation To Perform, Jose Eos R. Trinidad Jan 2023

The Irony Of Accountability: How A Performance-Inducing Policy Reduces Motivation To Perform, Jose Eos R. Trinidad

Interdisciplinary Studies Faculty Publications

Although sociological and organizational studies have focused on the influence of quantification on behavior, the author focuses on quantification’s increasingly important consequences on well-being and motivation. Using the case of U.S. education, which has long relied on accountability policies, the author finds that attendance at schools with high-stakes accountability predicted lower student self-efficacy, that is, decreased task motivation and resilience as well as increased fear of failure—salient for low-income, urban, and public schools. These associations, however, did not spill over to social and life satisfaction dimensions of well-being. Taken together, these findings suggest the irony of accountability, where data used …
