Underrepresented Students’ Perspectives On Higher Education Equity In The University Of California’S Elimination Of The Standardized Testing Requirement: A Critical Policy Analysis, Yufei Chen

LMU Theses and Dissertations

In July 2022, the University of California (UC) permanently eliminated the standardized tests requirement for its freshman admissions in order to alleviate the severed socioeconomic gap and college access barriers that were heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. This critical policy analysis research explored the immediate effects of UC’s policy reform on higher education equity. All 14 participants were underrepresented minority (URM) students who applied to at least one UC campus for fall 2022’s freshman admissions and were enrolled in four-year universities at the time of this study. From demographic surveys, focus groups, and in-depth interviews, I applied critical race theory …

How Reliable Are Shap Values When Trying To Explain Machine Learning Models, Jason Lawless Jan 2023

How Reliable Are Shap Values When Trying To Explain Machine Learning Models, Jason Lawless

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

With the rapid growth and application of machine learning and artificial intelligence models that can not be understood by humans, there is a growing movement calling for an increase in interpretability. There are numerous methods that attempt to explain these models that vary drastically in the process of evaluating models. In this paper, we investigate a local post-hoc method called SHAP. SHAP utilizes Shapley values from game theory to attribute an importance value to each input in a model at each datapoint. Shapley values can require significant computation time, especially as the number of inputs increases. In order to shorten …

A Literary Analysis Of The Oort Cloud: Summarising Its History And Proposing A Mission To Image Oort Cloud Objects, Avital Keeley

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The Oort Cloud was hypothesised in 1950 but has lost popularity as a research topic. This literary research summarises the most notable articles and simulations on the Oort Cloud with an analysis on the outdated simulations and assumptions. Finally, this research conflates the hypothesised values of Oort Cloud parameters to calculate the required specifications of instrumentation needed to image an Oort Cloud Object, and a rough budget is proposed of $5 million to launch a 35 km interferometer.

Surface-Engineered Mineral Particles For Gated Drug Delivery, Gene Transfer And Sunscreen Formulations, Mahadi Hasan Jan 2023

Surface-Engineered Mineral Particles For Gated Drug Delivery, Gene Transfer And Sunscreen Formulations, Mahadi Hasan

Dissertations and Theses

Surface-engineered nanomaterials have recently garnered wide attention for their huge biomedical applications. The surface functionalization of nanoparticles by desired chemical groups and coatings imparts unique properties to be used in therapeutic applications. Herein, we reported the biological and biomedical applications of three mineral particles: calcium carbonate nanoparticles, hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and mesoporous silica nanoparticles. The ability of pristine and surface-modified calcium carbonate particles to scatter UV-light significantly depends on the particle’s size, its surface chemical composition, and can be close to the SPF values of commercial sunscreens. These nontoxic particles are a promising component of biocompatible sunscreens free of the traditional …

Sub-Monthly Prediction Of Harmful Algal Blooms Based On Automated Cell Imaging, Vitul Agarwal, Jonathan Chávez-Casillas, Colleen B. Mouw

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are an increasing threat to global fisheries and human health. The mitigation of HABs requires management strategies to successfully forecast the abundance and distribution of harmful algal taxa. In this study, we attempt to characterize the dynamics of 2 phytoplankton genera (Pseudo-nitzschia spp. and Dinophysis spp.) in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, using empirical dynamic modeling. We utilize a high-resolution Imaging FlowCytobot dataset to generate a daily-resolution time series of phytoplankton images and then characterize the sub-monthly (1–30 days) timescales of univariate and multivariate prediction skill for each taxon. Our results suggest that univariate …

Using Drone Imagery To Map Intertidal Oyster Reefs Along Florida’S Gulf Of Mexico Coast, Michael Espriella, Vincent Lecours Jan 2023

Using Drone Imagery To Map Intertidal Oyster Reefs Along Florida’S Gulf Of Mexico Coast, Michael Espriella, Vincent Lecours

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) reefs offer vital ecosystem services and support economically and culturally important fisheries. However, environmental and anthropogenic stressors have led to significant decline in oyster reef coverage globally and locally in places like the Suwannee Sound in Florida, USA. Current monitoring methods are insufficient for timely and accurate assessment of oyster resources in the region. Here we demonstrate how drone imagery can be used to delineate intertidal oyster reef coverage rapidly and reliably. The high spatial resolution offered by drone imagery enables accurate delineations. We use a segmentation algorithm to delineate reefs, which produces consistently …

Accuracy Assessment Of The Ebee Using Rtk And Ppk Corrections Methods As A Function Of Distance To A Gnss Base Station, Joseph Cerreta, David Thirtyacre, Peter Miller, Scott S. Burgess, William J. Austin

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The use of unmanned aircraft systems to collect data for photogrammetry models has grown significantly in recent years. The accuracy of a photogrammetric model can depend on image georeferencing. The distance from a reference base station can affect the accuracy of the results. Positioning corrections data relies on precise timing measurements of satellite signals. The signals travel through the Earth's atmosphere, which introduces errors due to ionospheric and tropospheric delays. The aim of this research was to examine the eBee X and its global GNSS accuracy by comparing the RTK and PPK methods at different base station distances in photogrammetry …

Stochastic Optimization To Reduce Aircraft Taxi-In Time At Igia, New Delhi, Rajib Das, Saileswar Ghosh, Rajendra Desai, Pijus Kanti Bhuin, Stuti Agarwal

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Since there is an uncertainty in the arrival times of flights, pre-scheduled allocation of runways and stands and the subsequent first-come-first-served treatment results in a sub-optimal allocation of runways and stands, this is the prime reason for the unusual delays in taxi-in times at IGIA, New Delhi.

We simulated the arrival pattern of aircraft and utilized stochastic optimization to arrive at the best runway-stands allocation for a day. Optimization is done using a GRG Non-Linear algorithm in the Frontline Systems Analytic Solver platform. We applied this model to eight representative scenarios of two different days. Our results show that without …

Characteristics Of Special Education Field Placements: An Exploratory Study, Karin M. Fisher, Angela Norris

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

Research and policy in the field of teacher education recommend that special education (SPED) programs include opportunities for candidates to practice in supervised field experiences. Such field experiences (a) engage candidates in professional practice, (b) reduce their anxiety, (c) gain confidence, and (d) allow them to view themselves as educators. However, there is a lack of research on the characteristics of field placements in SPED. As a result of the dearth in the literature, the researchers discussed the results of an exploratory single survey study of 42 faculty members from institutes of higher education (IHE) from across the United States …

As the risk of antibiotic resistant pathogens increases, development of convenient point of care devices is essential. Such devices would help avoid infection – ensure cleanliness of environments and assist in bacteria analysis. The ultimate aim of the research presented here is to develop a compact, cost effective, easy to use optical device which is capable of detecting and quantifying bacteria in an aqueous sample. The surface relief patterns have a dual role, they provide a diffracted light signal, and control the adhesion of the bacteria to the surface. The strength of the diffracted signal is expected to provide a …

Explaining Deep Learning Time Series Classification Models Using A Decision Tree, Ephrem T. Mekonnen, Pierpaolo Dondio, Luca Longo Jan 2023

Explaining Deep Learning Time Series Classification Models Using A Decision Tree, Ephrem T. Mekonnen, Pierpaolo Dondio, Luca Longo

Academic Posters Collection

This preliminary study proposes a new post hoc method to explain deep learning-based time series classification models using a decision tree. Our approach generates a decision tree graph or rulesets as an explanation, improving interpretability compared to saliency map-based methods. The method involves two phases: training and evaluating the deep learning-based time series classification model and extracting prototypical events from the evaluation set to train the decision tree classifier. We conducted experiments on artificial and real datasets, evaluating the explanations based on accuracy, fidelity, number of nodes, and depth. Our preliminary findings suggest that our post-hoc method improves the interpretability …

Statistical Inference And Power Analysis For Direct And Spillover Effects In Two-Stage Randomized Experiments, Zhichao Jiang, Kosuke Imai, Anup Malani

Articles

Two-stage randomized experiments become an increasingly popular experimental design for causal inference when the outcome of one unit may be affected by the treatment assignments of other units in the same cluster. In this paper, we provide a methodological framework for general tools of statistical inference and power analysis for two-stage randomized experiments. Under the randomization-based framework, we consider the estimation of a new direct effect of interest as well as the average direct and spillover effects studied in the literature. We provide unbiased estimators of these causal quantities and their conservative variance estimators in a general setting. Using these …

How Ai Can Learn From The Law: Putting Humans In The Loop Only On Appeal, I. Glenn Cohen, Boris Babic, Sara Gerke, Qiong Xia,, Theodoros Evgeniou, Klaus Wertenbroch

Faculty Scholarly Works

While the literature on putting a “human in the loop” in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) has grown significantly, limited attention has been paid to how human expertise ought to be combined with AI/ML judgments. This design question arises because of the ubiquity and quantity of algorithmic decisions being made today in the face of widespread public reluctance to forgo human expert judgment. To resolve this conflict, we propose that human expert judges be included via appeals processes for review of algorithmic decisions. Thus, the human intervenes only in a limited number of cases and only after an …
