A Framework For The Automatic Identification Of Optimized Yield Surface Parameters, Kevin Hanekom Jan 2023

A Framework For The Automatic Identification Of Optimized Yield Surface Parameters, Kevin Hanekom

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Advanced engineering materials are designed to display tensile-compressive asymmetry (TCA) and anisotropy to provide unique attributes to critical components necessary in the hot section of turbines. The never-ending chase for higher efficiencies, and with them, higher temperature gradients, intrinsically leads to more and more of these complex materials, like single crystal turbine blades, embedded within the turbine environment. Mathematical models, known as yield criteria, allow engineers to visualize the mechanical behavior of these materials in various orientations under complex loading. Yield criteria are dependent on three key items in determination of their governing parameters: material test data, mathematical constraints, and …

Thompson, Dana Bernson, Daniel Feaster, Jennifer Villani, Redonna Chandler, Laura F. White, David Kline, Joshua A. Barocas

Statistics Faculty Publications

Background: The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) estimated the prevalence of opioid use disorder (OUD) among the civilian, noninstitutionalized people aged 12 years or older in Massachusetts as 1.2% between 2015 and 2017. Accurate estimation of the prevalence of OUD is critical to the success of treatment and resource planning. Various indirect estimation approaches have been used but are subject to data availability and infrastructure-related issues.

Methods: We used 2015 data from the Massachusetts Public Health Data Warehouse (PHD) to compare the results of two approaches to estimating OUD prevalence in the Massachusetts population. First, we used …

Multimodal Learning: Generating Precise Chest X-Ray Report On Thorax Abnormality, Gaurab Subedi Jan 2023

Multimodal Learning: Generating Precise Chest X-Ray Report On Thorax Abnormality, Gaurab Subedi

Dissertations and Theses

Chronic respiratory diseases, ranking as the third leading cause of death worldwide according to the 2017 World Health Organization (WHO) report, affect a staggering 544.9 million individuals. Compounding this public health challenge is the fact that over 80% of health systems grapple with shortages in their radiology departments, highlighting an urgent need for accessible and efficient diagnostic solutions. While various image classification models for analyzing thorax abnormalities have been developed, relying solely on one type of dataset (image data, for example) for thorax abnormality analysis is insufficient. Integrating texts with image data could provide more accuracy as well as analysis. …

This study used the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning to frame a study that integrated informal science teaching experiences with a university teacher education science methods course. The results showed improvement in participant preservice teachers' ability to teach science content, their self-confidence in teaching science, and their ability to connect what they learned in their methods course in a real-life setting.

Standards-Based Grading In Difficult Times: Precalculus Student Perceptions During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Rachel Epstein Jan 2023

Standards-Based Grading In Difficult Times: Precalculus Student Perceptions During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Rachel Epstein

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Standards-based grading is an alternative grading system that gives students multiple opportunities to demon-strate proficiency in course standards or objectives. It has the potential to provide flexibility and reduce student anxiety, which are particularly important during difficult times such as the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, stu-dents in a Precalculus course using standards-based grading between Spring 2021 and Spring 2022 were surveyed about how the pandemic had affected their learning and the benefits and challenges of standards-based grading. The students who took the course in Spring 2021, whose previous learning was least affected by the pandemic, were most likely to …

Magnetotelluric Insights Into The Formation And Reactivation Of Trans-Crustal Shear Zones In Precambrian Basement Of The Eastern U.S. Midcontinent, Benjamin S. Murphy, Michael S. Delucia, Stephen Marshak, Dhananjay Ravat, Paul A. Bedrosian Jan 2023

Bedrosian

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

Three-dimensional inversion of regional long-period magnetotelluric (MT) data re- veals the presence of two distinct sets of high-conductivity belts in the Precambrian basement of the eastern U.S. Midcontinent. One set, beneath Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and western Ohio, is defined by northwest– southeast-oriented conductivity structures; the other set, beneath Kentucky, West Vir- ginia, western Virginia, and eastern Ohio, in- cludes structures that are generally oriented northeast–southwest. The northwest-trend- ing belts occur mainly in Paleoproterozoic crust, and we suggest that their high con- ductivity values are due to graphite precipi- tated within trans-crustal shear zones from intrusion-related CO2-rich fluids. Our MT inversion …

Terrestrial Ecosystem Transformations In Response To Rapid Climate Change During The Last Deglaciation Around Mono Lake, California, Usa, Adam J. Benfield, Sarah J. Ivory, Bailee Nicole Hodelka, Susan R. H. Zimmerman, Michael M. Mcglue

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

We examine major reorganizations of the terrestrial ecosystem around Mono Lake, California during the last deglacial period from 16,000–9,000 cal yr BP using pollen, microcharcoal, and coprophilous fungal spores (Sporormiella) from a deep-water sediment core. The pollen results record the assemblage, decline, and replacement of a mixed wooded community of Sierran and Great Basin taxa with Alkali Sink and Sagebrush Steppe biomes around Mono Lake. In particular, the enigmatic presence of Sequoiadendron-type pollen and its extirpation during the early Holocene hint at substantial biogeographic reorganizations on the Sierran-Great Basin ecotone during deglaciation. Rapid regional hydroclimate changes produced structural alterations in …

Microtubule Polarity Flaws As A Treatable Driver Of Neurodegeneration, Bridie D. Eckel, Roy Cruz Jr., Erin M. Craig, Peter W. Baas Jan 2023

Microtubule Polarity Flaws As A Treatable Driver Of Neurodegeneration, Bridie D. Eckel, Roy Cruz Jr., Erin M. Craig, Peter W. Baas

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Microtubule disruption is a common downstream mechanism leading to axonal degeneration in a number of neurological diseases. To date, most studies on this topic have focused on the loss of microtubule mass from the axon, as well as changes in the stability properties of the microtubules and/or their tubulin composition. Here we posit corruption of the normal pattern of microtubule polarity orientation as an underappreciated and yet treatable contributor to axonal degeneration. We include computational modeling to fortify the rigor of our considerations. Our simulations demonstrate that even a small deviation from the usual polarity pattern of axonal microtubules is …

Eocene To Oligocene Cooling And Ice Growth Based On The Geochemistry Of Interglacial Mudstones From The East Antarctic Continental Shelf, Jennifer J. Light, Sandra Passchier Jan 2023

Eocene To Oligocene Cooling And Ice Growth Based On The Geochemistry Of Interglacial Mudstones From The East Antarctic Continental Shelf, Jennifer J. Light, Sandra Passchier

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The Eocene-Oligocene Transition at c. 34 million years ago (Ma) marked the global change from greenhouse to icehouse and the establishment of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS). How the ice-sheet behaviour changed during interglacials across this climate transition is poorly understood. We analysed major, trace and rare earth elemental data of late Eocene interglacial mudstone from Prydz Bay at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1166 and early Oligocene interglacial mudstone from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1360 on the Wilkes Land continental shelf. Both sites have comparable glaciomarine depositional settings. Lithofacies and provenance at Site 1166 in Prydz Bay are …

Indigenous And Western Sciences In Carlos Hernandez's The Assimilated Cuban's Guide To Quantum Santeria, Joy Sanchez-Taylor Jan 2023

Indigenous And Western Sciences In Carlos Hernandez's The Assimilated Cuban's Guide To Quantum Santeria, Joy Sanchez-Taylor

Publications and Research

This chapter examines Carlos Hernandez’s The Assimilated Cuban’s Guide to Quantum Santeria as an example of how authors of alternative futurisms can draw on Indigenous knowledge to destabilize Eurowestern perceptions that Western science is more modern and rational than Indigenous knowledge. Joy Sanchez-Taylor argues that Hernandez combines references to Santería and quantum physics to demonstrate parallels between Indigenous knowledge and Eurowestern “rational” science. Ultimately, references in Quantum Santeria to ideas of spiritual healing and nonlinear time demonstrate how authors like Hernandez are working to restore Biskaabiiyang, or a return to self, within science fiction.

Modeling Monthly Actual Evapotranspiration: An Application Of Geographically Weighted Regression Technique In The Passaic River Basin, Felix Oteng Mensah, Clement Aga Alo Jan 2023

Modeling Monthly Actual Evapotranspiration: An Application Of Geographically Weighted Regression Technique In The Passaic River Basin, Felix Oteng Mensah, Clement Aga Alo

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Actual evapotranspiration (ET) is perhaps the most difficult quantity to directly measure among the major water balance components. Because of the high cost and labor constraints associated with the direct measurement of ET, empirical data-driven modeling has frequently been used to estimate ET. Beyond the widely used traditional type regression that has the effect of producing ‘global’ parameter estimates, assumed to be uniform throughout an area, we utilized a more localized spatially non-stationary technique - the geographically weighted regression (GWR) - to estimate mean monthly ET in the Passaic River Basin (PRB). We identified the key environmental controls of ET …

Modeling Individual Activity And Mobility Behavior And Assessing Ridesharing Impacts Using Emerging Data Sources, Jiechao Zhang Jan 2023

Modeling Individual Activity And Mobility Behavior And Assessing Ridesharing Impacts Using Emerging Data Sources, Jiechao Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Predicting individual mobility behavior is one of the major steps of transportation planning models. Accurate prediction of individual mobility behavior will be beneficial for transportation planning. Although previous studies have used different data sources to model individual mobility behaviors, they have several limitations such as the lack of complete mobility sequences and travel mode information, limiting our ability to accurately predict individual movements. In recent years, the emergence of GPS-based floating car data (FCD) and on-demand ride-hailing service platforms can provide innovative data sources to understand and model individual mobility behavior. Compared to the previously used data sources such as …

Musical Form Reconstruction In Printed And Handwritten Lead Sheets Via Optical Recognition Of Chord Symbols, Nashir A. Janmohamed Jan 2023

Musical Form Reconstruction In Printed And Handwritten Lead Sheets Via Optical Recognition Of Chord Symbols, Nashir A. Janmohamed

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Optical music recognition (OMR) is the field of study which seeks to use computer vision to extract musical information from images. Most OMR work focuses on music symbols (such as notes, time signatures, clefs, etc.); to date, only two prior works pay attention to chord symbols (shorthand notation commonly used in jazz and popular music lead sheets to describe the harmony of the music) in musical documents. Chord symbols lay the foundation for jazz improvisation - a sequence of chord symbols is repeated during the improvisatory section, and the soloist and accompaniment (primarily, though not exclusively) use the chord symbols …

A Thermal, Mechanical, And Materials Framework For A Shape Memory Alloy Heat Engine For Thermal Management And Energy Recovery, Maria Chikhareva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Shape memory alloy (SMA) heat engines possess an inherent property of sensing a change in temperature, performing work, and rejecting heat through the shape memory effect resulting from a temperature-induced phase transformation. This work presents a framework for the design and implementation of an SMA-based Stirling heat engine for maximum power or speed incorporating and combining mechanical, thermal, and material aspects. The motivation for this work comes from the growing need for reliable thermal management and energy recovery in both ground and space applications of interest to NASA and commercial space companies. In future lunar and Mars missions, an SMA …

Machine Learning Applications In Advanced Additive Manufacturing: Process Modeling, Microstructure Analysis, And Defect Detection, Peter Warren Jan 2023

Machine Learning Applications In Advanced Additive Manufacturing: Process Modeling, Microstructure Analysis, And Defect Detection, Peter Warren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques are critical for assessing the integrity, health, and mechanical properties of materials manufactured from various methods. High fidelity NDE techniques are essential for quality control but often lead to massive data generation. Such a vast data load cannot be manually processed, this leads to a severe bottleneck for process engineers. Machine learning (ML) offers a solution to this problem by providing powerful and adaptable algorithms capable of learning patterns, identifying features, and finding hidden relationships in large sets of data. Various ML models are used in this work to improve predictions, improve measurements, detect anomalies, classify …

An Evaluation Of Thermocouple Reconstruction Techniques, Derek Brauneis Jan 2023

An Evaluation Of Thermocouple Reconstruction Techniques, Derek Brauneis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Temperature measurements can be difficult to obtain across many different harsh environments such as engine combustion chambers, engine exhaust temperatures, and explosion fireballs. While there are alternate methods to measure fluid temperature such as laser measurements, acoustic measurements, and camera imaging techniques, these methods can often be expensive, difficult to implement, and not able to see within the environment. Thermocouples are popular sensors because they are cheap and easy to implement across a wide range of applications and can measure temperature in areas where other methods cannot reach or see. However, while these sensors are very popular and versatile, they …

Hello, World? Domestic Software Patent Protection Stands Alone Due To Uncertain Subject Matter Eligibility Jurisprudence, Maxwell H. Terry Jan 2023

Hello, World? Domestic Software Patent Protection Stands Alone Due To Uncertain Subject Matter Eligibility Jurisprudence, Maxwell H. Terry

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

In the last sixteen years, software-related inventions have encompassed the majority of all utility patents issued in the United States. Further, studies estimate that spending within the global information technology market will grow to $4.6 trillion in 2023, as industries such as data security, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence continue to innovate and expand at alarming rates. Needless to say, software is a crucial and ever-expanding industry for the global economy. In a series of recent cases, however, the Supreme Court injected unpredictability into the patenting of software and computer-implemented inventions by overhauling the long-standing patentable subject matter doctrine.

Embodied …

Just Extracurriculars?, Emily Gold Waldman Jan 2023

Just Extracurriculars?, Emily Gold Waldman

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Extracurricular activities have been the battleground for a striking number of Supreme Court cases set at public schools, from cases involving speech to religion to drug testing. Indeed, the two most recent Supreme Court cases involving constitutional rights at public schools—Kennedy v. Bremerton School District (2022) and Mahanoy Area School District v. B.L. (2021)—both arose in the extracurricular context of school sports. Even so, the Supreme Court has never fully clarified the status of extracurricular activities themselves. Once a school offers an extracurricular activity, is participation merely a privilege? Does the fact that extracurricular activities are voluntary for students affect …

Sidestepping The Escherian Stairwell: Explicit Establishment As A Method For Circumventing Qualified Immunity's Constitutional Stagnation, Earl Y. Lin Jan 2023

Sidestepping The Escherian Stairwell: Explicit Establishment As A Method For Circumventing Qualified Immunity's Constitutional Stagnation, Earl Y. Lin

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

In recent years, the doctrine of qualified immunity (QI) has gained increased prominence in the public consciousness. Prior to the murder of George Floyd and the resulting nationwide racial justice protests and uprisings, this Supreme Court–made doctrine—and the ways it shields law enforcement officers from legal accountability—was a relatively esoteric legal topic. Yet by the summer of 2020, Americans were marching in the streets with signs calling for QI’s demise, and polling found QI to be disfavored by a margin of two-to-one. This same polling also showed a sharp decline in public confidence that police would use force appropriately, treat …

Finally, It Seems To Be Working – The Evolving Valuation Effect Of The European Union’S Emissions Trading System, Benjamin Lynch, Martha O'Hagan-Luff Jan 2023

Finally, It Seems To Be Working – The Evolving Valuation Effect Of The European Union’S Emissions Trading System, Benjamin Lynch, Martha O'Hagan-Luff

Articles

This research examines the market reaction to the publication of firm-specific environmental news for participating firms in the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) during its third phase. Our sample of 123 publicly listed participating firms, located in 21 European countries, accounted for 45.43% of emissions in the EU ETS in 2020. Using an event study methodology during the period 2014–2021, we find that positive news was rewarded with increased returns for publication events related to the latter years of the phase (2017–2020) while it had an insignificant impact for earlier year (2013–2016). This indicates that the EU ETS …

A Simulation-Based Tdabc Model To Manage Supply Chain Costing: A Case Study, Siham Rahoui, John Crowe, Amr Mahfouz Jan 2023

A Simulation-Based Tdabc Model To Manage Supply Chain Costing: A Case Study, Siham Rahoui, John Crowe, Amr Mahfouz

Conference Papers

Effective management of supply chain costing is crucial for decision-making during times of disruption. It provides accurate cost indicators, enabling organizations to adapt to the risks of disruptions and mitigate their adverse effects. The supply chain costing literature has shown that traditional cost accounting approaches are inadequate in addressing the dynamic and complex nature of supply chain performance and the nonlinear behavior of the involved processes. Consequently, this paper presents a simulation-based supply chain costing framework that integrates discrete event simulation and time-driven activity-based costing to explore the dynamics of management accounting tools in a real context with all their …
